Jason,

You don't need to use a boot loader with the U5, just boot to the promt
(Stop A). Then just type boot followed by the alias of the slice you
want to boot.

There is your problem TMDA is most likely the cause. Such programmes are
in effect adding to the spam problem. Nearly all spam has a forged from
address and all programmes such as TMDA do is send a challenge to an
innocent 3rd party. Whist it looks like it reduces your spam all you do
is in effect spam someone else. When your e-mail address has been used
in a spam run by a spammer and you start getting 10s of these challenge
an hour it is quite easy to report 1 my accident. If you look at the
Spamcop reporting page you will see a warning about just this situation.

I suppose that the real answer is to stop compounding the spam problem
and use a combination of spamassassin and block lists.

BTW I make it a point never to respond to challenges.

During the partition process it says I will have the option to
configure the boot
loader latter. Right now I can't boot FreeBSD and I have no idea how
to configure
this machine to make it dual boot? I would like to have Solaris 10 as
the primary

O/S, FreeBSD as the secondary and Sparc Linux on the third hd.

I don't know if theres a possibility of using a boot loader, but I have
multibooted my sparc boxes from the OFW prompt by writing the primary OS
into OFW config and booting into other OS's using the ofw prompt
(stop-a) and then giving boot command with the disk/cdrom name I want to
boot from. I think neither NetBSD or FreeBSD supports a boot loader on
Sparc but I'm not 100% sure about that. After trying Slowlaris I'm
running all my boxes with BSD's only though.

Spamcop listed - need help to diagnose why

2006-01-06 Thread David Banning
My server just was listed with Spamcop. Before I exercise my -one time-
option to de-list it I need to verify that indeed my server is not sending
spam. I have 3 win boxes routing through my FreeBSD box.

Also there are a few windows computers in the outside world that send
mail through my server via port 26 using their login and password.

I know it is possible for viruses to install a stand-alone smtp server
on win boxes. That is one suspicion I have.

My question;
What tool would I use to see if unauthorized mail is being sent via
my server? Note that I am running tmda, so that I have around 80 emails per
minute being sent out; to request verification on my standard incoming
mail, (therefore it is too complicated to just watch -all- mail being
sent out, and try and decode legitimate from illegitimate).

2006-01-06 Thread Teilhard Knight

Hi,

Please don't remote the list from the recipients of the message, unless
the reply contains confidential material that you don't wish to disclose
to all the subscribers of the list. By keeping the list, you ensure
that other subscribers may reply too in case I'm wrong about something,
and you make it possible for future readers who find the thread in the
archives to read all the relevant material.

I am aware of the importance that the discussions take place in the list.
It, I confess, happens with my newsreader that if I just hit: "reply", the
address entered in the reply is the sender's address, and I have sent many
messages that way for not correcting it. But invariably I have realized the
mistake and copy and paste my reply to the list again. So, in that case the
person I am replying to receives two messages, one in the list and one
private. I have no account of having replied only to the recipient.

On 2006-01-06 00:07, Teilhard Knight <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

   da0: 1.000MB/s transfers
   da0: 250MB (512000 512 byte sectors: 64H 32S/T 250C)

I get something similar too. The Device Node is created all right.

Cool!

:o)

When you plug the USB flash disk in, /dev/da0 (or another daX
device) is automatically created. If the flash disk already has
partitions (they usually come with a single FAT partition),
you'll also see da0s1 or something similar:

   # ls -l /dev/da*
   crw-r- 1 root operator - 4, 44 Oct 16 17:38 /dev/da0

Yes, I also get something similar to this.

That's nice. It means that the kernel has recognized the flash disk as
a "block device" and the CAM layer of the kernel has created a 'direct
access' disk device for it -- much like it does for SCSI disks.

:o)

If you see only da0, it's possible that the 'raw disk' is
formatted using FAT, without a real BIOS-style partition, which
means that you should be able to 'mount' it with something like:

   # /sbin/mount_msdosfs /dev/da0 /mnt

I do not only see da0 above and this command results in: "mount_msdosfs:
/dev/da0: Invalid argument"

The flash disk is not formatted, so you'll have to create a filesystem
on it. I did this for mine, using fdisk(8) and bsdlabel(8), as
described in the following post of my old weblog:

http://keramida.serverhive.com/weblog/archives/2004-10-16/using-a-usb-20-flash-mini-disk-on-freebsd

The disk was formatted all right. The problem I had is that I was trying to
mount /dev/da0, instead of /dev/da0s1.

Enabling USB 2.X will also increase the access speed of the flash disk a
lot, so you may want to read this too:

http://keramida.serverhive.com/weblog/archives/2005-06-23/usb-2x-support-in-freebsd

I only have USB 2.0 in my computer. Actually I would like to have at least
one port 1.1 for some old devices.

You told me how to mount my flash disk in case the command "ls -l
/dev/da0" results incomplete or I have the disk raw formatted. But
what should I do if I get all similar to what you get? In other words,
how do you mount your flash disk?

If you successfully mount the disk once, using the mount(8) and the
related utilities (mount_msdosfs, etc), then you can add a line in your
``/etc/fstab'' file to make things easier the next time. My USB disk
doesn't have slices these days (just a UFS filesystem on it) so the
relevant line from fstab is:

   /dev/da1a /mnt/jflash ufs rw,noauto,noexec,nosuid 0 0

Yes, I have written a line similar to this in /etc/fstab, and I now just
hit: "mount /mnt/Ant". Ant is the label of my flash disk.

I very much appreciate your feedback.

Teilhard.

If it's a graphical program, you can call the gksudo command from
gnome. Or, if you look in its sourcecode, you can find out how it
works and integrate the same into your program.

The port you are looking for is net/openldap23-server.

If you do a make config on this port and enable SASL support the
resulting package will be openldap23-sasl-server.

Denis Lemire

/dev/eth0 question - prefer reply in next 20mins

2006-01-06 Thread Peter Leftwich
...Well today, I have a question that *is* unixey (yoo-knicks-ee) in
nature, but admittedly not having to do with BSD; Here, let me start
this way:

When I boot my dual-boot PC to Linux Fedora Core 4, instead of
FreeBSD *wink* I can no longer connect to the internet via SBC Yahoo
DSL as I used to (via PPPoE). If I run the command "dmesg | grep -i
eth" there is no output. My DSL modem has 3 of 4 lights ON, that
is, all lights are lit except for the ACTIVITY indicator.

I ran the "Internet Connection Wizard" and re-created profiles if
you will, for both eth0 (dialup choice for DNS) and an "xDSL"
listing
for SBC that saves your username and password. When I click SBC,
and then the [Activate] button, there is no activity on my DSL modem
and it TIMES OUT after trying for approximately 2mins.

The command "ifconfig eth0 plumb" or "... eth0 up" claims there is
no such device.

Any ideas? Maybe I need to replace the NIC (3Com Etherlink card
that's about 7yrs old)??

Thank you in advance, I truly appreciate it, and have a joyous
weekend. Wish I were in Vegas at C.E.S.!

I don't know about the English, but you need to do something
about your Email client so it breaks lines in to something reasonable.

You message was one long line with no breaks and as such was
to difficult to read and it would not include in to the
reply because it is too long.

It is good manners on the list to break lines (with an ENTER press)
at about 70 characters length or shorter if the logic makes sense.

Yes, FreeBSD has quite a few limits hardcoded which
gives other OSes a chance to look decent in various
tests and benchmarks.

Anyway, please provide additional details. CPU
load one of the most important factors here. According
to some people, polling makes it show incorrect (lower)
values. Can you run iperf with different switches? Can
you try and tweak polling-related sysctl variables?

Assuming it is a PPP connection, type 'man ppp' and read about the files
/etc/ppp/ppp.linkup and /etc/ppp/ppp.linkdown - they should allow you to

openldap23 sasl server

2006-01-06 Thread Randy Schultz

Hi there,

I had a 5.4 system running the openldap23 sasl server that I did a bin upgrade
to 6.0-stable. Once that was done I cvsup'd everything to bring it up to
date. When I did a portupgrade -a I noticed, due to portupgrade dying, that

openldap23-sasl-server does not exist in the ports tree. Yet using sysinstall,
which is what I did initially to install, it's there for installing. Can
somebody point me to the answer as to why it's available using sysinstall
but not when using the ports tree? The 2.3 sasl client is there but not
the 2.3 sasl server.

Yep, it's mountd that reads /etc/exports. If you change that file in

hyperactive dhclient?

2006-01-06 Thread Robert Huff

Normally, I expect dhclient to run at startup and then
disappear into the background.
Today - in the process of diagnosing other troubles - I ran
into this from top:

last pid: 48344; load averages: 3.30, 2.85, 2.46up 0+19:50:53 14:17:04

Mem: 146M Active, 22M Inact, 100M Wired, 2560K Cache, 60M Buf, 222M Free
Swap: 2048M Total, 310M Used, 1738M Free, 15% Inuse, 156K In

  226 _dhcp 1 1110 1528K 268K *Giant 31:04 12.74% dhclient

Now I assume "*Giant" means the Giant Lock ... which is another
thing I've never seen before. Not for dhclient, and not for
anything else.
Gut reaction says this is not a good thing. On the other hand
my gut reaction has often been wrong. Is there a legitimate reason
for this much activity? If not, how do I figure out what's broken?
(I'm running

FreeBSD 7.0-CURRENT #0: Wed Jan 4 13:41:21 EST 20

but this is as much a question about dhcp as it is about
any particular version.)

rcNG shutdown

2006-01-06 Thread rihad
Hi. I can't seem to find the way FreeBSD deals with stopping the running
rc.d services when shutting down/rebooting the machine. In Linux, for
example, the shutdown command first switches to "runlevel" 0, triggering
init to call the program for that event, which deals with shutting down
the running services gracefully. I might be missing something obvious:
in FreeBSD, are users expected to write their own programs for doing
that? Something along the lines of (untested):

find /usr/local/etc/rc.d/ /etc/rc.d/ -mindepth 2 -print0 \
| xargs -0 -n1 -I% /usr/bin/command "%" stop
halt -p|reboot|whatever

"The Complete FreeBSD": errata and addenda

2006-01-06 Thread Greg Lehey
The trouble with books is that you can't update them the way you can a web page
or any other online documentation. The result is that most leading edge
computer books are out of date almost before they are printed. Unfortunately,
The Complete FreeBSD, published by O'Reilly, is no exception. Inevitably, a
number of bugs and changes have surfaced.

"The Complete FreeBSD" has been through a total of five editions, including its
predecessor "Installing and Running FreeBSD". Two of these have been reprinted
with corrections. I maintain a series of errata pages. Start at
http://www.lemis.com/errata-4.html to find out how to get the errata
information.

Have you found a problem with the book, or maybe something confusing? Please
let me know: I'm constantly updating it.

How to get best results from FreeBSD-questions

2006-01-06 Thread Greg Lehey

How to get the best results from FreeBSD questions.
===

Last update $Date: 2005/08/10 02:21:44 $

This is a regular posting to the FreeBSD questions mailing list. If
you got it in answer to a message you sent, it means that the sender
thinks that at least one of the following things was wrong with your
message:

- You left out a subject line, or the subject line was not appropriate.
- You formatted it in such a way that it was difficult to read.
- You asked more than one unrelated question in one message.
- You sent out a message with an incorrect date, time or time zone.
- You sent out the same message more than once.
- You sent an 'unsubscribe' message to FreeBSD-questions.

If you have done any of these things, there is a good chance that you
will get more than one copy of this message from different people.
Read on, and your next message will be more successful.

I: Introduction
===

This is a regular posting aimed to help both those seeking advice from
FreeBSD-questions (the "newcomers"), and also those who answer the
questions (the "hackers").

Note that the term "hacker" has nothing to do with breaking
into other people's computers. The correct term for the latter
activity is "cracker", but the popular press hasn't found out
yet. The FreeBSD hackers disapprove strongly of cracking
security, and have nothing to do with it.

In the past, there has been some friction which stems from the
different viewpoints of the two groups. The newcomers accused the
hackers of being arrogant, stuck-up, and unhelpful, while the hackers
accused the newcomers of being stupid, unable to read plain English,
and expecting everything to be handed to them on a silver platter. Of
course, there's an element of truth in both these claims, but for the
most part these viewpoints come from a sense of frustration.

In this document, I'd like to do something to relieve this frustration
and help everybody get better results from FreeBSD-questions. In the
following section, I recommend how to submit a question; after that,
we'll look at how to answer one.

II: How to unsubscribe from FreeBSD-questions
==

When you subscribed to FreeBSD-questions, you got a welcome message
from [EMAIL PROTECTED] In this message, amongst
other things, it told you how to unsubscribe. Here's a typical
message:

Welcome to the freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list!

If you ever want to unsubscribe or change your options (eg, switch to
or from digest mode, change your password, etc.), visit your
subscription page at:

  http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/options/freebsd-questions/[EMAIL PROTECTED]

(obviously, substitute your mail address for "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"). You can
also make such adjustments via email by sending a message to:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]

with the word 'help' in the subject or body (don't include the
quotes), and you will get back a message with instructions.

You must know your password to change your options (including
changing the password, itself) or to unsubscribe.

Normally, Mailman will remind you of your freebsd.org mailing list
passwords once every month, although you can disable this if you
prefer. This reminder will also include instructions on how to
unsubscribe or change your account options. There is also a button on
your options page that will email your current password to you.

Here's the general information for the list you've
subscribed to, in case you don't already have it:

  FREEBSD-QUESTIONS User questions
This is the mailing list for questions about FreeBSD. You should not
send "how to" questions to the technical lists unless you consider the
  question to be pretty technical.

Normally, unsubscribing is even simpler than the message suggests: you
don't need to specify your mail ID unless it is different from the one
which you specified when you subscribed.

If Majordomo replies and tells you (incorrectly) that you're not on
the list, this may mean one of two things:

  1. You have changed your mail ID since you subscribed. That's where
keeping the original message from majordomo comes in handy. For
example, the sample message above shows my mail ID as
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Since then, I have changed it to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] If I were to try to remove [EMAIL PROTECTED] from
the list, it would fail: I would have to specify the name with
  which I joined.

  2. You're subscribed to a mailing list which is subscribed to

Re: How to find out my systems DDR RAM speed?

2006-01-06 Thread Bruce MacDonald
BIOS screens and RAM chips are tough to see from a distance :)

The program memtest86+ http://www.memtest.org/ shows the information you
seek. Unfortunately, as far as I know, it must be run from a boot disk,
though since it is open source, it perhaps could be modified to run under
FreeBSD.

Also, I may be wrong about this, but I think that if your current system
requires slower DDR333 RAM, then putting in DDR400 may cause problems.
OTOH, if it can handle faster DDR400, then it could also use DDR333, but run
more slowly. Also, I really dislike mixing RAM types on a single board, but
people tell me that on modern mobos, that is not such a big deal as it once
was.

It was designed to run on lower end system and

Hmm. I restarted nfsd, but apparently that wasn't enough.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ showmount -e
Exports list on localhost:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ sudo kill -s HUP `cat /var/run/mountd.pid`
Password:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ showmount -e
Exports list on localhost:
/usr/local/www 192.168.1.0

Now it shows up. Lets try the client.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ sudo mount /mnt/kangawww
Password:

Aha. That worked.

Thanks muchly.

How to find out my systems DDR RAM speed?

2006-01-06 Thread Holtor
Hello Everyone,

I'm running FreeBSD 5.4-STABLE on a remotely hosted server and I'd like to find
out the DDR speed
of the RAM chips installed so I can order the proper ones for an upgrade. I
know it's either
DDR333 or DDR400 so I assume I can just order DDR400 to be safe but..

There's plenty of Windows programs which tell me this data on a Windows OS so
I'm sure it's
possible in FreeBSD but I don't know how. Anyone have any idea?

Thanks,

H. Grendal

Look alright.
After adding the line to /etc/exports - mountd(8) needs to re-read the
file. So do:

# kill -s HUP `cat /var/run/mountd.pid`

You can also use 'showmount -e' to see the configured exports list.

Michael,

If /usr/local/www is not a mount point, this will not work. You need to
put the mount point (eg: /usr) in /etc/exports, and add the option
-alldirs to allow it to mount a subdirectory of the mount point.

Hello,

I'm configuring nfsd on my freebsd box, and trying to mount from my
linux box. I keep getting permission denied on the linux side, and I'm
not sure why.

My local network is 192.168.1.0/24.

I've added this to /etc/exports.

/usr/local/www -network 192.168.1.0 -mask 255.255.255.0

My client from 192.168.1.3 is trying to mount /usr/local/www, and it's
getting permission denied from the nfs server, so I'm assuming that my
/etc/exports is somehow misconfigured.

Can anyone help me with this? I'm not used to BSD-style exports.

Thanks,
Mike

DBus, Hald and Gnome Volume Manager

2006-01-06 Thread Crispy Beef

Hi,

Have recently set-up hald, dbus and gnome-volume-manager on my Linux box so
that devices are automounted in fstab etc. Works great! Have had a look to
see if I can have this running with Gnome on my 6.0-RELEASE laptop, found dbus
in ports, but hald and gnome-volume-manager are nowhere to be seen.

Did some more digging and found that hald doesn't seem to have been ported yet
which is probably why I've hit a dead end. The site I found the info on was
from 2004 so it could be out of date, any ideas if there's been any progress
in this area?

Cheers.

Things work much better using he latest gocr and a greatly

gotcha is that the sample jpg file I have are filled with
improper non-characters, including "_", '<", ">", along with

aspell to look at (say) S_wiss and guess Swiss, an6yle and guess

You might get somewhere with the bad-spellers suggestion mode
setting, which should make it more aggressive about trying to find a
match for mangled strings. However, I understand that in this mode
it's still looking for soundslike mistrakes, not "9 looks like g"
and the like. This mode also turns of checking for typos IIRC, but
those checks really won't be helping you anyway since they're
looking for fumbled keystrokes, not lookalike chars. Tuning the edit
distance may or may not help for those really bad mangles.

Other than that, you should probably ask this question in an aspell
support forum for best results.

Could someone help me write a script that will check my connection to the

going down.

That's nice. It means that the kernel has recognized the flash disk as
a "block device" and the CAM layer of the kernel has created a 'direct
access' disk device for it -- much like it does for SCSI disks.

The flash disk is not formatted, so you'll have to create a filesystem
on it. I did this for mine, using fdisk(8) and bsdlabel(8), as
described in the following post of my old weblog:

http://keramida.serverhive.com/weblog/archives/2004-10-16/using-a-usb-20-flash-mini-disk-on-freebsd

Enabling USB 2.X will also increase the access speed of the flash disk a
lot, so you may want to read this too:

http://keramida.serverhive.com/weblog/archives/2005-06-23/usb-2x-support-in-freebsd

In that case do an ls and see if you can see a kernel, might be called
kernel.old or something and type 'boot ', that should boot it up.

You shouldn't really have to do this from the ISO you downloaded, maybe it's
worth getting it down again and burning out a fresh copy?

Actually, this is what I did when I noticed I had a device node "da0s1", and
ding!, I mounted it. Just by pure trial and error. Thanks so much.

There are some tools in the ports tree that can be used for this. Two of
them are sysutils/portmanager and sysutils/portupgrade. You can choose
your favourite one based on your own experience and research.
Quick examples for your issue:
1. portmanager
portmanager x11-toolkits/linux-gtk2 -l
or
2. portupgrade -Rv linux-gtk2
In both cases you'd better have an up-to-date ports tree.

mount a Flash Disk in release 6.0? I have Googled, but I simply
cannot find the right way. An icon to mount and unmount on the

When I plug my USB JetFlash disk, the following appears in
/var/log/messages (and the system console, but I mostly use X11
these days):

umass0: USB Flash Disk, rev 2.00/2.00, addr 2
   da0 at umass-sim0 bus 0 target 0 lun 0
da0: Removable Direct Access SCSI-2 device
   da0: 1.000MB/s transfers
   da0: 250MB (512000 512 byte sectors: 64H 32S/T 250C)

I get something similar too. The Device Node is created all right.

That's it. Copy files to and from the /mnt directory. When you
are done, make sure you unmount the flash disk before removing
it. If you don't, chances are your kernel will panic when it
discovers the physical flash disk is gone.

   # umount /mnt

Now, it's safe to pull the flash disk out.

You told me how to mount my flash disk in case the command "ls -l /dev/da0"
results incomplete or I have the disk raw formatted. But what should I do
if I get all similar to what you get? In other words, how do you mount your
flash disk?

Thanks for your feedback.

Something went bad during your updates. Some ports were not updated. Do
you have an up-to-date x11/linux-XFree86-libs port installed? Update
all your dependencies and the problem will dissapear.

It is not possible to dump kernel to gmirror.

The reason is that at the time, when the kernel is dumping core, it is
usually in pretty bad state, kernel internals may be corrupted and so
on. The dumping code is therefore written to be quite low level so that
even wedged kernel can be dumped. The dumping code is part of hard disk
controller's drivers. The gmirror is quite high-level device and geom
itself needs working scheduler so there will probably never be a way to
dump on gmirror provided swap. When the dumpon command is issued the
check is performed whether the driver for the disk you want to dump on
supports kernel core dumps.

This is on 6.0 right? I use a Tungsten E and got caught out by the same thing
when I upgraded from 5.4 to 6.0. Under 5.4 you connected to /dev/ucom0. Under
6.0 it's /dev/ttyU0. IIRC this change was documented in the release notes (not
that I saw it until I'd spent a few hours head scratching). Now sync'ing fine
with pilot-link.
