There is your problem TMDA is most likely the cause. Such programmes are in effect adding to the spam problem. Nearly all spam has a forged from address and all programmes such as TMDA do is send a challenge to an innocent 3rd party. Whist it looks like it reduces your spam all you do is in effect spam someone else. When your e-mail address has been used in a spam run by a spammer and you start getting 10s of these challenge an hour it is quite easy to report 1 my accident. If you look at the Spamcop reporting page you will see a warning about just this situation. I suppose that the real answer is to stop compounding the spam problem and use a combination of spamassassin and block lists. BTW I make it a point never to respond to challenges. My server just was listed with Spamcop. Before I exercise my -one time- option to de-list it I need to verify that indeed my server is not sending spam. I have 3 win boxes routing through my FreeBSD box. Also there are a few windows computers in the outside world that send mail through my server via port 26 using their login and password. Hi, Please don't remote the list from the recipients of the message, unless the reply contains confidential material that you don't wish to disclose to all the subscribers of the list. By keeping the list, you ensure that other subscribers may reply too in case I'm wrong about something, and you make it possible for future readers who find the thread in the archives to read all the relevant material. I am aware of the importance that the discussions take place in the list. It, I confess, happens with my newsreader that if I just hit: "reply", the address entered in the reply is the sender's address, and I have sent many messages that way for not correcting it. But invariably I have realized the mistake and copy and paste my reply to the list again. So, in that case the person I am replying to receives two messages, one in the list and one private. I have no account of having replied only to the recipient. The Device Node is created all right. Cool! :o) When you plug the USB flash disk in, /dev/da0 (or another daX device) is automatically created. If the flash disk already has partitions (they usually come with a single FAT partition), you'll also see da0s1 or something similar: # ls -l /dev/da* crw-r- 1 root operator - 4, 44 Oct 16 17:38 /dev/da0 Yes, I also get something similar to this. That's nice. It means that the kernel has recognized the flash disk as a "block device" and the CAM layer of the kernel has created a 'direct access' disk device for it -- much like it does for SCSI disks. :o) If you see only da0, it's possible that the 'raw disk' is formatted using FAT, without a real BIOS-style partition, which means that you should be able to 'mount' it with something like: # /sbin/mount_msdosfs /dev/da0 /mnt I do not only see da0 above and this command results in: "mount_msdosfs: /dev/da0: Invalid argument" The flash disk is not formatted, so you'll have to create a filesystem on it. I did this for mine, using fdisk(8) and bsdlabel(8), as described in the following post of my old weblog: http://keramida.serverhive.com/weblog/archives/2004-10-16/using-a-usb-20-flash-mini-disk-on-freebsd The disk was formatted all right. The problem I had is that I was trying to mount /dev/da0, instead of /dev/da0s1. Enabling USB 2.X will also increase the access speed of the flash disk a lot, so you may want to read this too: http://keramida.serverhive.com/weblog/archives/2005-06-23/usb-2x-support-in-freebsd I only have USB 2.0 in my computer. Actually I would like to have at least one port 1.1 for some old devices. You told me how to mount my flash disk in case the command "ls -l /dev/da0" results incomplete or I have the disk raw formatted. But what should I do if I get all similar to what you get? In other words, how do you mount your flash disk? If you successfully mount the disk once, using the mount(8) and the related utilities (mount_msdosfs, etc), then you can add a line in your ``/etc/fstab'' file to make things easier the next time. My USB disk doesn't have slices these days (just a UFS filesystem on it) so the relevant line from fstab is: /dev/da1a /mnt/jflash ufs rw,noauto, noexec, nosuid 0 0 Yes, I have written a line similar to this in /etc/fstab, and I now just hit: "mount /mnt/Ant". Ant is the label of my flash disk. I very much appreciate your feedback. /dev/eth0 question - prefer reply in next 20mins

If I run the command "dmesg | grep -i eth" there is no output. My DSL modem has 3 of 4 lights ON, that is, all lights are lit except for the ACTIVITY indicator. I ran the "Internet Connection Wizard" and re-created profiles if you will, for both eth0 (dialup choice for DNS) and an "xDSL" listing for SBC that saves your username and password. When I click SBC, and then the [Activate] button, there is no activity on my DSL modem and it TIMES OUT after trying for approximately 2mins. The command "ifconfig eth0 plumb" or "... eth0 up" claims there is no such device. Any ideas? Maybe I need to replace the NIC (3Com Etherlink card that's about 7yrs old)?? Re: script to monitor internet connection
Brian John wrote: Hello, I would like to write a script to monitor my internet connection status. My home connection goes down fairly often and I would like to get an idea for just how often it goes down and if possible how long it goes down for. Could someone help me write a script that will check my connection to the internet and log whenever it goes down and possibly how long it goes down for? I want to have some evidence to give to my ISP that my connection is going down. Thanks /Brian Assuming it is a PPP connection, type 'man ppp' and read about the files /etc/ppp/ppp.linkup and /etc/ppp/ppp.linkdown - they should allow you to echo a line to a log file of your own devising. openldap23 sasl server
Hi there, I had a 5.4 system running the openldap23 sasl server that I did a bin upgrade to 6.0-stable. Once that was done I cvsup'd everything to bring it up to date. When I did a portupgrade -a I noticed, due to portupgrade dying, that openldap23-sasl-server does not exist in the ports tree. Yet using sysinstall, which is what I did initially to install, it's there for installing. Can somebody point me to the answer as to why it's available using sysinstall but not when using the ports tree? The 2.3 sasl client is there but not the 2.3 sasl server. -- Randy([EMAIL PROTECTED]) 715-726-2832 email bodhisattva <*> "There is no fire like passion, there is no shark like hatred, there is no snare like folly, there is no torrent like greed." ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

You need to put the mount point (eg: /usr) in /etc/exports, and add the option -alldirs to allow it to mount a subdirectory of the mount point. It would appear that my configuration was correct in fact, but restarting nfsd was not enough. Restarting mountd picked up the new config and it's now working. Yep, it's mountd that reads /etc/exports. If you change that file in future, you just need to restart mountd and not nfsd. On 4 Jan 2006, at 18:59, eoghan wrote: Hello Im wondering if there is any info on getting oracle running on freeBSD (im using 6.0). I have found this: http://www.scc.nl/~marcel/howto-oracle.html But it seems a little dated. I read oracle doesnt officially support freeBSD and was pointed to a link here of people working with it: http://twister.pp.ru/ora-fbsd I dont speak russian, but is this no longer being continued? Also, by oracle, I mean the database. i realise they have many products... Any info would help... In my opinion, the best online how-to for this by far is the one at http://www.shadowcom.net/freebsd-oracle9i/ - I intend to produce something for the handbook once I get the time, but if you follow the instructions there you will not go far wrong. On metalink yesterday I noticed that "Intel FreeBSD" appears in the list of operating systems when you raise a TAR (whoops, I mean SR these days), so perhaps they will support it if you pay them enough, I don't know. rcNG shutdown
Hi. I can't seem to find the way FreeBSD deals with stopping the running rc.d services when shutting down/rebooting the machine. In Linux, for example, the shutdown command first switches to "runlevel" 0, triggering init to call the program for that event, which deals with shutting down the running services gracefully. I might be missing something obvious: in FreeBSD, are users expected to write their own programs for doing that? Something along the lines of (untested): find /usr/local/etc/rc.d/ /etc/rc.d/ -mindepth 2 -print0 \ | xargs -0 -n1 -I% /usr/bin/command "%" stop halt -p|reboot|whatever ? ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

"The Complete FreeBSD": errata and addenda
The trouble with books is that you can't update them the way you can a web page or any other online documentation. The result is that most leading edge computer books are out of date almost before they are printed. Unfortunately, The Complete FreeBSD, published by O'Reilly, is no exception. Inevitably, a number of bugs and changes have surfaced. "The Complete FreeBSD" has been through a total of five editions, including its predecessor "Installing and Running FreeBSD". Two of these have been reprinted with corrections. I maintain a series of errata pages. Start at http://www.lemis.com/errata-4.html to find out how to get the errata information. Have you found a problem with the book, or maybe something confusing? Please let me know: I'm constantly updating it. How to get best results from FreeBSD-questions
How to get the best results from FreeBSD questions. === Last update $Date: 2005/08/10 02:21:44 $ This is a regular posting to the FreeBSD questions mailing list. If you got it in answer to a message you sent, it means that the sender thinks that at least one of the following things was wrong with your message: - You left out a subject line, or the subject line was not appropriate. - You formatted it in such a way that it was difficult to read. - You asked more than one unrelated question in one message. - You sent out a message with an incorrect date, time or time zone. - You sent out the same message more than once. - You sent an 'unsubscribe' message to FreeBSD-questions. If you have done any of these things, there is a good chance that you will get more than one copy of this message from different people. Read on, and your next message will be more successful. This document is also available on the web at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html. = Contents: I:Introduction II: How to unsubscribe from FreeBSD-questions III: Should I ask -questions or -hackers? IV: How to submit a question to FreeBSD-questions V:How to answer a question to FreeBSD-questions I: Introduction === This is a regular posting aimed to help both those seeking advice from FreeBSD-questions (the "newcomers"), and also those who answer the questions (the "hackers"). Note that the term "hacker" has nothing to do with breaking into other people's computers. The correct term for the latter activity is "cracker", but the popular press hasn't found out yet. The FreeBSD hackers disapprove strongly of cracking security, and have nothing to do with it. In the past, there has been some friction which stems from the different viewpoints of the two groups. The newcomers accused the hackers of being arrogant, stuck-up, and unhelpful, while the hackers accused the newcomers of being stupid, unable to read plain English, and expecting everything to be handed to them on a silver platter. Of course, there's an element of truth in both these claims, but for the most part these viewpoints come from a sense of frustration. In this document, I'd like to do something to relieve this frustration and help everybody get better results from FreeBSD-questions. In the following section, I recommend how to submit a question; after that, we'll look at how to answer one. II: How to unsubscribe from FreeBSD-questions == When you subscribed to FreeBSD-questions, you got a welcome message from [EMAIL PROTECTED] In this message, amongst other things, it told you how to unsubscribe. Here's a typical message: Welcome to the freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list! If you ever want to unsubscribe or change your options (eg, switch to or from digest mode, change your password, etc.), visit your subscription page at: http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/options/freebsd-questions/[EMAIL PROTECTED] (obviously, substitute your mail address for "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"). You can also make such adjustments via email by sending a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word 'help' in the subject or body (don't include the quotes), and you will get back a message with instructions. You must know your password to change your options (including changing the password, itself) or to unsubscribe. Normally, Mailman will remind you of your freebsd.org mailing list passwords once every month, although you can disable this if you prefer. This reminder will also include instructions on how to unsubscribe or change your account options. There is also a button on your options page that will email your current password to you. You should not send "how to" questions to the technical lists unless you consider the question to be pretty technical. Normally, unsubscribing is even simpler than the message suggests: you don't need to specify your mail ID unless it is different from the one which you specified when you subscribed. If Majordomo replies and tells you (incorrectly) that you're not on the list, this may mean one of two things: 1. You have changed your mail ID since you subscribed. That's where keeping the original message from majordomo comes in handy. For example, the sample message above shows my mail ID as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Since then, I have changed it to [EMAIL PROTECTED] If I were to try to remove [EMAIL PROTECTED] from the list, it would fail: I would have to specify the name with which I joined. 2. Re: How to find out my systems DDR RAM speed?
BIOS screens and RAM chips are tough to see from a distance :) The program memtest86+ http://www.memtest.org/ shows the information you seek. Unfortunately, as far as I know, it must be run from a boot disk, though since it is open source, it perhaps could be modified to run under FreeBSD. Also, I may be wrong about this, but I think that if your current system requires slower DDR333 RAM, then putting in DDR400 may cause problems. OTOH, if it can handle faster DDR400, then it could also use DDR333, but run more slowly. Also, I really dislike mixing RAM types on a single board, but people tell me that on modern mobos, that is not such a big deal as it once was. I'm writing a program that needs to write a file and I'd like to have it ask for the root password and run as root, like many of the system config applications do. Do I have to write something special, or is there some way to tell KDE (or GNOME) to prompt for the root password? That's nice. It means that the kernel has recognized the flash disk as a "block device" and the CAM layer of the kernel has created a 'direct access' disk device for it -- much like it does for SCSI disks. >> If you see only da0, it's possible that the 'raw disk' is >> formatted using FAT, without a real BIOS-style partition, which >> means that you should be able to 'mount' it with something like: >> >># /sbin/mount_msdosfs /dev/da0 /mnt > > I do not only see da0 above and this command results in: "mount_msdosfs: > /dev/da0: Invalid argument" The flash disk is not formatted, so you'll have to create a filesystem on it. I did this for mine, using fdisk(8) and bsdlabel(8), as described in the following post of my old weblog: http://keramida.serverhive.com/weblog/archives/2004-10-16/using-a-usb-20-flash-mini-disk-on-freebsd Enabling USB 2.X will also increase the access speed of the flash disk a lot, so you may want to read this too: http://keramida.serverhive.com/weblog/archives/2005-06-23/usb-2x-support-in-freebsd > You told me how to mount my flash disk in case the command "ls -l > /dev/da0" results incomplete or I have the disk raw formatted. If you successfully mount the disk once, using the mount(8) and the related utilities (mount_msdosfs, etc), then you can add a line in your ``/etc/fstab'' file to make things easier the next time. My USB disk doesn't have slices these days (just a UFS filesystem on it) so the relevant line from fstab is: /dev/da1a /mnt/jflash ufs rw,noauto, noexec, nosuid 0 0 Regards, Giorgos ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

I have been doing a lot of key work over the last couple of days What I am doing is: dmesg | grep da0 To find the drive that is listed on as it might not be da0 if you have other things plugged in. There are some tools in the ports tree that can be used for this. Two of them are sysutils/portmanager and sysutils/portupgrade. You can choose your favourite one based on your own experience and research. Quick examples for your issue: 1. portmanager portmanager x11-toolkits/linux-gtk2 -l or 2. portupgrade -Rv linux-gtk2 In both cases you'd better have an up-to-date ports tree. -- Adi Pircalabu (PGP Key ID 0x04329F5E) -- This message was scanned for spam and viruses by BitDefender. When I plug my USB JetFlash disk, the following appears in /var/log/messages (and the system console, but I mostly use X11 these days): umass0: USB Flash Disk, rev 2.00/2.00, addr 2 da0 at umass-sim0 bus 0 target 0 lun 0 da0: Removable Direct Access SCSI-2 device da0: 1.000MB/s transfers da0: 250MB (512000 512 byte sectors: 64H 32S/T 250C) I get something similar too. The Device Node is created all right. When you plug the USB flash disk in, /dev/da0 (or another daX device) is automatically created. If you see only da0, it's possible that the 'raw disk' is formatted using FAT, without a real BIOS-style partition, which means that you should be able to 'mount' it with something like: # /sbin/mount_msdosfs /dev/da0 /mnt I do not only see da0 above and this command results in: "mount_msdosfs: /dev/da0: Invalid argument" That's it. Copy files to and from the /mnt directory. When you are done, make sure you unmount the flash disk before removing it. If you don't, chances are your kernel will panic when it discovers the physical flash disk is gone. # umount /mnt Now, it's safe to pull the flash disk out. You told me how to mount my flash disk in case the command "ls -l /dev/da0" results incomplete or I have the disk raw formatted. But what should I do if I get all similar to what you get? The reason is that at the time, when the kernel is dumping core, it is usually in pretty bad state, kernel internals may be corrupted and so on. The dumping code is therefore written to be quite low level so that even wedged kernel can be dumped. The dumping code is part of hard disk controller's drivers. The gmirror is quite high-level device and geom itself needs working scheduler so there will probably never be a way to dump on gmirror provided swap. When the dumpon command is issued the check is performed whether the driver for the disk you want to dump on supports kernel core dumps.
