RAID 1 failure
Hello.. Hope there is some one out here can fix my problem. I have fresh installed FreeBSD 7.1 on my IBM system X3100 server (2 160GB hard drive), I have decided to do a RAID1 by using the steps on the handbook : http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/books/handbook/geom-mirror.html as the site stated you have to enable the loading of the geom_mirror.ko kernel module during the system intialization by putting #echo 'geom_mirror_load="YES"' >> /boot/loader.conf UNFORTUNATELY, I forgot that steps now I'm facing a problem how to correct it where in after I restart the machine the system refuse to boot, I'm stack on this loading: F1 FreeBSD F5 Drive 1 Default:F1 BTX loader 1.00 BTX version is 1.02 Consoles: Internal video/keyboard Bios drive C: is disk 0 Bios drive D: is disk 1 Bios 631KB/2094592KB available memory FreeBSD i386 bootstrap loader, Revision 1.1 (r...@logan.case.buffalo.edu Thu Jan 1 09:55:10 UTC 2009) Loading /boot/defaults/loader.cof Do you have any idea how to do it? Unless you can communicate directly with the people who manage the server, that is not an easy task. You will have to consult whois for the routing information, and then, even still the results may be inaccurate, as IP space allocated to someone in Orlando Florida may be using some of their space in Dallas Texas. Re: Booting freebsd 7.1 from Firewire or USB2 drive
Thanks Steve, So USB2 from a PC should work, which is good.I had problems booting FreeBSD 7.1 from even the internal drive on the mac mini until I partitioned it with MBR (as opposed to GUID).. I tried installing to a USB drive last night, but it doesn't seem to show up when I hold down option while booting (that normally shows all bootable drives). Then I installed acroread8. But it still does not start, as you can from the message above. Actually, there is at least one bug in the port as the message reveals. At runtime, acroread8 tries to look for /etc/pango/pango.modules, which - because of the port's linux heritage - translates to /compat/linux/etc/pango/pango.modules. This path is incorrect, at least with linux_base-fc4 - with which the correct path turns out to be /compat/linux/etc/pango/i686-redhat-linux-gnu/pango.modules in my case. The user has to fix it with a symlink himself. I am beginning to wonder why can't FreeBSD simply put on the distribution media binary packages for programs that almost everyone uses these days (thunderbird, acroread) and which take an immense amount of time/effort to build. The FreeBSD DVD is more than half empty and I am sure nobody would mind spending a couple of hours extra at download-time what possibly might save a couple of weeks and a whole lot of headaches at install-time. Anyway, if anyone has any clue how to get me out of this acroread mess, I would be really grateful. In fact, I'll often put "-Os" in my /etc/make.conf CFLAGS setting. This only rarely improves raw speed over more agressive optimization flags, however. I use it primarily for programs that are huge to begin with (Firefox, for example) or programs that have many instances running (my shell, my terminal program, etc.) for the sake of conserving memory. I tested clang (ccc), the stock 7.1 gcc (4.2.1), and gcc 4.3.4, using -Os and -O0, -O2, and -O3. For raw speed, gcc43 with -O3 took the lead. In every case, even the stock gcc beat ccc. To be honest, I didn't pay too much attention to the binary size, though I'm pretty sure both gcc variants beat ccc in that benchmark. Like I said before, I wasn't overly scientific in my methodology. I compiled the "zip" port for my tests (very fast compile). I ran the same task in a loop 5 times, and took the mean of the timings from "time". I did pre-load the file into filesystem cache by reading it with "dd" before the calls to zip (which wrote to /dev/null). In every case, ccc was last in performance when compared with the same CFLAGS. However, I didn't have time to see if, for example, "-O3" for ccc resulted in a faster binary than "-O0" for gcc. I wish lang/tcc would run under amd64. Talk about small binaries! Somebody with a compulsion for benchmarking could put this to the test. After seeing Roland's benchmarking zeal in the "best archiver" thread, maybe he should join the fun. ;-) -- Geoff ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

Rsync always preserve owner/group
Hi list! I'm in the process of creating an automated update system based on SVN and rsync. I 'svn update' every night and then rsync the updated files from the working copy of SVN to the right folders. The problem I have is that when I rsync the files, the destination owner/group is set with the owner/group from the source file (the file from the SVN with a wrong owner/group). I don't want to modify the destination file owner/group but only update it's content. I'm not using any option with the rsync command. I also observed that the permissions are not changed in the transfer, which is a normal behaviour and perfect in my situation. Example: ll /usr/local/etc/scripts/ -rwxrwxrwx 1 psm psm2754 Mar 17 10:51 wakeup.sh And the details of the source file: ll /root/update/scripts/ -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 2754 Mar 13 11:37 wakeup.sh Execution of the rsync command: rsync /root/update/scripts/wakeup.sh /usr/local/etc/scripts/ ll /usr/local/etc/scripts/ -rwxrwxrwx 1 root wheel 2754 Mar 17 10:59 wakeup.sh I also tried to explicitly disable preserve group with --no-g but got the same result. I think the idea is to get away from gcc with its evil GPL3 license as the default compiler. To that end, it looks like decent strides are being made with the clang front end to llvm: http://wiki.freebsd.org/BuildingFreeBSDWithClang I got bored one day and installed the port, set CC=ccc in /etc/make.conf then built a few ports with it to benchmark against various gcc incantations. (Very unscientific, so I won't post numbers). I wasn't quite bored enough to try a make world with it, though. But according the the link I provide, it appears to be 99% of the way there. As best I can tell, there would be a non-trvial performance loss with using clang at this point. At wth least with the version that's currently in the ports tree (I didn't try building from the latest svn version). It does look promising, though. I hope it'll eventually surpass gcc in optimization of code. On Ivoras'FreeBSD page, ``What's cooking for FreeBSD 8'' http://ivoras.sharanet.org/freebsd/freebsd8.html LLVM site shows it's something like precompiler+runtime compiling. will it be used that way, or as usual compiler? the first way sound really good (single binary for every arch, and optimized at runtime) but i think it will need HUGE change in system. second would be just a replacement one can read about the possible substitution of GCC by LLVM (among other candidates). Under the assumption that LLVM is selected, would this mean that FreeBSD will somehow integrate the OCaml compiler? Of course OCaml is already in the ports, but if it is somehow integrated in the base system, there is serious opportunities to write system tools with this language. -- Cheers, Michaël ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org" ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

So if you'd run adjkerntz -i, times would show the same as in multiuser. > Make install world, the install will be done with a UTC at 7:30, that > is after the build time of 0:00 to 0:30. > > Reboot in multiuser: > > Wall clock=7:45 > CMOS clock=7:45 > TZ time= 7:45 > UTC= 0:45 > > Now if you look at the newly installed world, it will be in the > future, ahead by 7 hours: a file installed at 7:35 will be listed with > a time of 14:35. Re: Compiling everything myself?
I have been using Debian for some years and have gotten tired by system freezes, having a slow system, and having a package system that requires that I install every skin of KDE to get KDE up and running. I hope FreeBSD will be better! :-) Hiya Im all for one compiling software for ones self, BUT the fact that you mention system freezes and a slow system is very suspect. Its in your best interest to get a live cd and run memcheck and more importantly check your hardware. Also have you check your machine, by using system tools such as top, netstat, vmstat, iostat, lsof etc, basically to check what your machine is doing and whats it up too. Re: FreeBSD Networking Questions / vlan, lagg, routing, FIBs, ezjail
Peter Cornelius wrote: - On my router, why do I have to set the base interface to promiscuous mode in order to get packets from/to my vlans through? Am I doing something wrong? Are there any implications of working this way? Hm, the promiscuous mode must be needed for the vlan driver. But you don't have to set it. I can't think of any implication in a switched ethernet environment. It is just that every frame received from the cable is offered to the operating system for further evaluation. In a switched ethernet environment every frame that will reach your card will be either: 1) for you. 2) a broadcast frame. 3) a multicast frame. Things would be very different, if your system was connected to a hub where a multitude of frames(every frame on the ethernet) would be interrupting the kernel for no reason. - On my "server", is there any way to set up individual "default" routes (to the router) for each of the vlans short of tucking the ezjails behind the vlan interfaces each into their own FIB (btw,. has anyone ever done that?)? Yes, from FreeBSD-7.1 and beyond, there is support for up to 16 routing tables. Use the setfib command to select routing table for outgoing connections. Something like, "setfib 10 jail $JAILOPTSANDARGS", in the jail case. You have to compile a kernel with the option ROUTETABLES=n. Re: 7.1 phpmyadmin skip logon screen?
Matthew Seaman wrote: Fbsd1 wrote: In 7.1 phpmyadmin now drops you into a logon screen. How do I stop this function and always go to main menu screen? That's nothing to do with the FreeBSD version -- phpMyAdmin works the same on any platform. To make phpMyAdmin auto-login to a DB, you need to use 'config' authentication mode. http://www.phpmyadmin.net/documentation/#authentication_modes It's probably the least secure authentication mode provided, so you should take further steps in your Apache config to stop the world gaining access to your database. Cheers, Matthew Read the user id info on mysql and phpmyadmin. It's so much overkill. Don't need to secure then at all. I have inhouse development box on private lan and mysql has always worked just fine with superuser mysql id of root without password. In the previous version of phpmyadmin no login id was required and I was able to see my DB definitions. Tried to setup config.inc.php by adding statement $cfg['Servers'][$i]['user'] = 'root'; but no joy. What is needed in config.inc.php to allow the default mysql superuser user id root full access in phpmyadmin? ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"
Re: snd_hda questions
Quoting Jimmie James (from Mon, 16 Mar 2009 19:08:52 -0400): With the recent snd_hda changes, I have more audio devices than ever: hdac0: HDA Codec #0: Realtek ALC880 pcm0: at cad 0 nid 1 on hdac0 pcm1: at cad 0 nid 1 on hdac0 pcm2: at cad 0 nid 1 on hdac0 pcm3: at cad 0 nid 1 on hdac0 The new HDA code supports more stuff of your HDA soundchip. As you can see above you have controls for digital output (and maybe input) at pcm0. With hw.snd.default_unit=1 I have (adjusting vol and pcm changes volume level here.) Mixer vol is currently set to 55:55 Mixer pcm is currently set to 50:50 Mixer mix is currently set to 0:0 Here you have probably the line-in and line-out jacks for analog data. With hw.snd.default_unit=2 I have (adjusting vol and pcm does nothing here, 0:0 or 100:100 nothing changes) Mixer vol is currently set to 0:0 Mixer pcm is currently set to 0:0 Mixer mic is currently set to 0:0 Mixer mix is currently set to 60:60 Mixer rec is currently set to 0:0 Recording source: mic The new code knows about front-jacks and rear-jacks, is able to play on multiple channels (think about discrete home cinema surround sound like 5.1 or 7.1). What the above (and below refers to, I don't know, you don't give enough info). With hw.snd.default_unit=3 I have Recording source: Mail notification sounds from Thunderbird are barely audible, and I can't control the volume for it. Can someone point me in the right direction to control/use the different pcm* devices, the man pages aren't totally clear to me. You could look at /dev/sndstat (AFAIK the color codes of the jack are listed there, but I'm not sure about this) and the verbose bootmessage (boot -v), they give more information. You also need to test your loudspeakers/headphone/whatever on each jack for each pcm device. If the sound still does not work as expected with a recent version of FreeBSD, you need to send the (HDA) messages from a verbose boot to this list with a description of what does not work as expected.
