maybe OT, but involves OOO its slideshow fmt, ``Impress''
This is for anybody familiar with the "powerpoint" fmt docs/display, and the openoffice.org equivalent, Impress. I have several dozen of files in several directories; each file (php or html--or can be xlated to xml) had one or two jpeg graphics. What I would like to experiment with is to see if having my Jottings philosophical stuff in slideshow presentation. My personal philosophy grew out of a disagreement with the bureaucrats in my home state (Ohio) who asserted that my physical disabilities made it impossible for me to become a productive member of society. Similar bureaucrats in California just a few years later took a different slant, and over the years and with plenty of sweating over my engineering and comp-sci classwork---and obviously, when I started earning my salt---, I noted down a bunch of short pieces that evolved into my "Jottings" thoughts. I've tried my best to de-nerd and de-geek this stuff, so that it encourages anyone and everyone who feels beat-up on by just-plain-life. Since this stuff has gone global, I've had lots of positive feedback. At the same time, back-of-envelope math has convinced me that it wouldn't pay to publish this in ink+paper. So in addition to my jottings.thought.org website, have a push-button slideshow might encourage more people to give this a read ... or a listen. If I can find a volunteer to read the stuff. I've tried to get firefox3 to show the demo here, but I'm evidently too too far out of date. If there is a way of having OOo-3.01 use the writing portion and turn the files into Impress mode, that would be ideal. O/wise, it might turn into a sharp learning curve. In any case, there are two questions for this list. The first, obviously, is subjective and is: would having my stuff in slideshow fmt gain me a wider readership? The second is: anybody out there willing to clue me in on this stuff? gary -- Gary Kline kl...@thought.org http://www.thought.org Public Service Unix http://jottings.thought.org http://transfinite.thought.org The 2.41a release of Jottings: http://jottings.thought.org/index.php ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

All you need is that the guy at the field office knows something about PC hardware and can type a few commands on any command line. Then there should be a phone. FreeBSD is not as silly as Linux when you move a disk from one box to another. If it is a "server" box (which requires no GUI) then the only changes you are likely to make are on the network configurations (ifconfig_* in rc.conf and resolv.conf) and the rest will remain pretty much the same. What I have done is that I have a prototype, which is a SATA disk. I am pretty much okay of the next machine I want to install has a SATA disk, but I am also not worried if it has PATA disk as I know I will only need a change in /etc/fstab. So what I normally do is this: Attach my prototype disk as master on the machine to install, while slaving the disk that the machine had. I enter sysinstall and disklable/newfs the slave disk. I make the disk bootable, enable softupdates on it and I normally create the root mount point (/). Once done, I change the mount point again to, say, /newdisk, so the slave disk is now mounted on /newdisk. After this: dump L0af - / | (cd /newdisk/; restore -rf -) # BTW, I have the habit of creating only / and swap! So now I have a duplicate system on the slave disk. cd /newdisk; ee etc/rc.conf ; ee etc/fstab; ee etc/resol.conf Here I change the ifconfig_ line for the network device (as seen from dmesg.boot), ensure that fstab refers to the correct device names and voila! I save, shutdown, remove my prototype disk, restore the slave disk to master position and reboot and I have a system identical to the proto. Once connected to a live network, I can ssh to it from anywhere I want using my own account and the su to root if needed, though I always prefer sudo. Now, if only you can follow my way, you only need to ship your prototype disk to the field office and get the windows lunnie to do the disk connections, type the commands, etc and you have a server running at the field office in no time! Of course tell him to pack your prototype disk safely and return it to you. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "Clothes make the man. No, but it *does* write in parts of the slice. In particular, it writes geli metadata to the last sector of the device. If this sector happens to be "in use" by the existing data on the device, you will lose the data of this particular sector. The rest of the actual data stored on the rest underlying device is not affected by the "geli init" command. >> and it depends on exactly what you mean by "erase". > > Destroy it so it's no longer aviable. No, the actual data will *still* be on the raw device after you run the initial "geli init" command. Even _after_ you newfs the new encrypted device, block allocation algorithms for the filesystem may selectively write in some parts of the unencrypted device but skip others. This means that until you explicitly fill the encrypted device to its full capacity, it may _still_ be possible to peek under geli and see some of the previously stored data. This is precisely why the geli manpage suggests that you overwrite the full encrypted device with data from `/dev/random'. >> If your question is, "I'm switching a partition to using geli, do I >> need to back up my data before doing so?" the answer is YES! > > I do NOT want to backup the data unencrypted. > >>> But I want to keep the info on the slice. >> >> Then you need to copy it elsewhere, then copy it back after the slice >> is encrypted. > > Dont have the space for that. If you find the space for a full backup, then you can backup the data in *encrypted* form too, i.e. by saving two geli keys in a removable device (a USB flash disk maybe) and then going through two geli devices: 0. save two geli keys on a removable device, i.e. key-a and key-b 1. geli init the backup device with key-a and geli attach it 2. overwrite the backup device with /dev/random data 3. newfs and mount the backup device 4. dump everything from the original unencrypted device to the newly encrypted backup device 5. geli init the original device with key-b and attach it 6. overwrite the new encrypted device with /dev/random data 7. newfs and mount the newly encrypted device 8. restore from the encrypted backup device to the new encrypted device 9. verify that everything works in the newly encrypted device 10. detach the encrypted backup device and overwrite it with /dev/random data once more All you need is a backup device that is large enough to hold a full backup of your data and a moderately safe place to store the encryption keys while you are doing the whole backup and restore dance. ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

"unable to completely remove directory" during deinstall
This is undoubtedly a very "newbie" question, but I have seen this type of error a few times recently: pkg_delete: unable to completely remove directory '/directory.name' pkg_delete: couldn't entirely delete package (perhaps the packing list is incorrectly specified?) It occurs at the end of a "deinstall" as a matter of updating a port "by hand". What is the proper procedure to correct this? Run "pkgdb -F"? Rm the offending files/dirs by hand? Both? The updated packages seem to run okay afterward if I ignore these errors; however, I am certain that they are really just swept under the carpet for the time being and will reemerge in the future (at a moment of maximum inconvenience no doubt). Also, is "make deinstall" the same as "uninstall"? Sorry, I guess I had two newbie questions. Thanks for your help. You can usually just do a: make deinstall reinstall distclean Prior to updating, running 'pkgdb -Ffuv' is usually a safe concept. If there are any problems, they will usually become self evident. Re: "unable to completely remove directory" during deinstall
On Wed, 22 Apr 2009, Richard DeLaurell wrote: This is undoubtedly a very "newbie" question, but I have seen this type of error a few times recently: pkg_delete: unable to completely remove directory '/directory.name' pkg_delete: couldn't entirely delete package (perhaps the packing list is incorrectly specified?) This is more-or-less normal, especially if the application was ever used before being deinstalled. This is often the result of configuration files being altered --- which you might had done knowingly with an editor or which might have been done by the application itself when you ran it. If you used an editor, you might have left an artifact, like an editor backup in the directory. Generally it is a good thing. Many times the configuration will not change in any fatal way, so you can run on the old configuration file until you go through the new distribution configuration to see what, if anything, has changed and what needs updating. Even if the old configuration won't work, you are likely to want it handy as you edit the new configuration file, because there is no point in reinventing the wheel on things that haven't changed. At any rate, deinstall is doing the right thing when it doesn't delete stuff that it can't identify positively as stuff that was installed. It occurs at the end of a "deinstall" as a matter of updating a port "by hand". What is the proper procedure to correct this? Run "pkgdb -F"? Rm the offending files/dirs by hand? Both? If you really want to do this, you have to remove the files/directories by hand. So far as the pkgdb is concerned, there won't be anything wrong whether you do it or not. The updated packages seem to run okay afterward if I ignore these errors; however, I am certain that they are really just swept under the carpet for the time being and will reemerge in the future (at a moment of maximum inconvenience no doubt). The only downside here is that you may accumulate a bit of kruft in application directories --- generally no concern given modern drive sizes. But as I have said, some of that kruft may be helpful at times. If you have like a tidiness thing, I'd suggest you not delete the kruft but move it to some backup directory and let it gather dust. Very rarely there is a major shake-up in which it does matter --- such as when xorg moved. In those cases there should be a heads-up in UPDATING. Also, is "make deinstall" the same as "uninstall"? I could be wrong because I never use anything other than 'make deinstall' but I don't find an 'uninstall' target in the port makefiles. A few applications have a uninstall command, and that is not the same thing. cvsup-mirror
I am having quite the issue with a cvsup-mirror install (1.3_8) here. It seems to be keeping some meta information file somewhere and has FAILED to give me a local mirror (not one to be publicly available) yet. Being the stubborn person I am, I have multiple times cleared some and all of the following to try to resolve the problem... /usr/local/etc/cvsup the package itself /home/ncvs /home/cvsupin /usr/ports/ports/net/cvsup-mirror And each time it takes ~5 hours to download 1.5GB of data in /home/ncvs then a client connecting to itself fails to work. Latest problem is -- Quote Server warning: Cannot open "/usr/local/etc/cvsup/prefixes/FreeBSD.cvs/src/gnu/lib/libgmp/mpz/get_si.c,v": No such file or directory Server warning: Cannot open "/usr/local/etc/cvsup/prefixes/FreeBSD.cvs/src/gnu/lib/libgmp/mpz/get_str.c,v": No such file or directory Server warning: Cannot open "/usr/local/etc/cvsup/prefixes/FreeBSD.cvs/src/gnu/lib/libgmp/mpz/get_ui.c,v": No such file or directory Server warning: Cannot open "/usr/local/etc/cvsup/prefixes/FreeBSD.cvs/src/gnu/lib/libgmp/mpz/getlimbn.c,v": No such file or directory -- /Quote It's just a snippet.. It can't find ANYTHING. Other problems included the inability to even select the src-all/cvs or ports-all/cvs (trees? branches?) in the server, yet it has 1.5GB downloaded. What'd help me to learn what's wrong is the line in config.sh as below: distribs="distrib.self .. . FreeBSD.cvs /home/ncvs . FreeBSD-www.current SKIP . FreeBSD-gnats.current SKIP gnats FreeBSD-mail.current SKIP ." My guess is it names a distribution and puts a directory it stores the files into in the next argument, separated by space. Next distribution is named and it's directory it stores the files into as the next one past that, with all distributions separated by a single period. Then the word 'gnats' throws me off because I . don't know what the heck it's there for.. is the '.' an alias instead to the first item in the line, meaning it's a tuple? (distrib storedir alias)... What throws me off is that the /usr/local/etc/cvsup directory was tarred up from a working mirror and copied here and let the update.sh run for 5 hours, to come to the above quoted warnings (but I'm treating them as errors). The working system has about 4GB in /home/ncvs that works for me, but this one can't get past 1.5GB. Working system has been working beautifully for several months (6?).. so maybe it's just collective. I really would like to get a bearing on cvsup-mirror, but have no clue what to google or read to find out some of the troubleshooting guides. --Tim ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

This topic has been brought up time and again. The general consensus is that if you need a fancy installer, use something like PC-BSD. There are a lot of advantages to FreeBSD's text installer ... for one, it works over a serial console. Any new installer would have to keep those advantages. It's also easier to maintain than a graphical installer. The general consensus every time this question comes up is that it could be improved, but it's currently "good enough" and there are other improvements that people think are more important. With a limited number of developer hours available, something gets back-burnered. The idea of a better installer has yet to meet with any resistance, though. It's just a lack of available time, so if you've got time and you're volunteering, I say go for it! -- Bill Moran http://www.potentialtech.com http://people.collaborativefusion.com/~wmoran/ ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

IMHO numbers and letters look the same in the scary dark place, a TUI, or GUI. Better device detection, faster, more packages, etc. would all be "better" and should be more of a priority than making a GUI exactly. GUI don't need to have any priority, it's just don't needed AT ALL. if fancy cool graphics is important - why using FreeBSD at all? there are lot of other products both free and commercial that concentrates on it. not only installer - everything else too :) ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

Thanks Patrick. Modern install does not necessarily mean GUI. FreeBSD *needs* a text installer to work on old machines, headless servers, serial consoles and the like. That being said, there are quite a few annoyances with sysinstall. And of course, having a GUI installer as an additional option is also very welcome. Some of the current problems with sysinstall IMHO: - Confusing set of options - Beginners tend to go in circles inside the installer - No real 'back' functionality. Can't fix most mistakes, need to redo the install - Does not make the difference between base system and packages obvious. - Tries to do too much for a single program (install, configure, install packages, fdisk, label, network you name it) but many of these choices lack essential functionality or behave strangely. (i.e. the label editor will not allow you to create an extra partition without giving a mount point) Personally, I would like a text installer using a previous/next approach that would give me options like: - Install a Complete FreeBSD Base System => Subchoices: install everything or select base system components - Install Additional Software Packages - Configure other services - Help and that would allow someone to go back and forth between the pages For myself I don't really mind, as I always do the same install (Standard, Custom Distribution, Select everything but X, ports, local and so on) but it would be really nice if people just starting out don't get intimidated by the installer. ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

multiple PPPoE connections on one machine (DSL load balancing)
Hello -- I'm configuring FreeBSD 7.1 as a router/load-balancer and I just got stuck. I know this sounds like a newbie question, but hear me out. I have three DSL line (AT&T in SF Bay Area, business class) connected via ethernet to the box, and one more ethernet connected to an internal network. The idea is to do some clever kind of load-balancing and/or logging of DSL connections using pf. All three DSL lines are configured to use PPPoE. I can successfully bring any one of them up individually, but when I try to bring more than one up, using either ppp or mpd5, I get an error that looks like this (example from ppp): ppp : tun0: Warning: iface add: ioctl(SIOCAIFADDR, X.X.X.X -> D.D.D.D ): File exists and then the 2nd link goes down. mpd5 says the same thing, but the error is slightly different. For all three point-to-point links the remote side of the point to point (D.D.D.D) is always the same IP address, so naturally it doesn't want to add multiple routing table entries which point to the same destination. The vendor claims to be unable to change the value of D.D.D.D because "everyone in your region has the same remote address." They also don't support mlppp, so multilink is out. Also, I would like easy, real-time, programmatic access to the IP address of each individual DSL line. So far, I've thought of the following workarounds: 1. Use cheap linksys boxen to hang off each DSL line so the FreeBSD network stack doesn't have to do the PPPoE. I'm concerned that they'll be able to handle the volume of individual connections I'm planning on, even with the firmware replaced with something decent. Plus it's three extra devices on my network! 2. Use network virtualization such as this. I don't have any experience with it, but I'm guessing it would do everything I want. http://imunes.tel.fer.hr/virtnet/ Does anyone have any ideas how to solve this problem more elegantly? It has already been done. The modern installer is called "sysinstall". It covers many actions: It does not only install the operating systen, it furthermore helps installaing applications and configuring the system, its services, network settings, security and so on. It can be used from a serial console, from the text mode, and from an X terminal. It's very straight forward. For maximum easiness of operations, it's controlled via the keyboard. As I mentioned, this can be a local keyboard, or one of a serial terminal (a real terminal in hardware or a connected terminal emulator). At the moment, this modern installer is available in the english language, which is the main communications language of the FreeBSD operating system. The problem is that if the graphics isn't optional (if it's the default), the whole thing is *limiting* the actions you can do with it. Simply consider what will happen if you try to use a GUI installer via a serial console (and this is a common task in datacenters). > it doesn't make sense. Exactly. More graphics != better. No problem, as long as (a) it isn't default (read: too complicated to switch it off of not needed) and (b) doesn't make things more complicated. It's nice you mentioned some problems (invitations for further development) of sysinstall. Lemme see if I can add something to it: > Some of the current problems with sysinstall IMHO: > > - Confusing set of options - Beginners tend to go in circles inside the > installer > - No real 'back' functionality. Yes, especially when adding functionalities like "Linux compatibility", the installer installs some additional packages at this given moment. I'd prefer an installer which acts in two stages: Stage 1: Make all the settings; this would maybe include the option of having a "back" button, or much better: Instead of a linear structure, a hierarchical structure with direct access (as it is now) is much better - in this case, you don't need a "back" button. Stage 2: Download (and install) the system and the packages that are required by the settings made in stage 1. > Personally, I would like a text installer using a previous/next approach > that would give me options like: Forgive me my ignorance, but personally, I completely DISLIKE this linear approach. Instead of A ---> B ---> C ---> D ---> E ---> Foops, forgot something E <--- no, not here D <--- not here, too C <---ah, here it was, okay, got it C ---> D ---> E ---> F ---> Finish A hierarchy would be better. Options: A This and that B Some other stuff C More stuff D Even more stuff E Some settings F Several other settings DoneCommit So one could first select A This and that then, knowing that C - E are not interesting for him, address F Several other settings directly, make some choices, and then, maybe go back to A This and that and do some more tasks, and finally select DoneCommit to do the install. This is what sysinstall already provides. In a modern way, it allows to "go back" to any setting that has already been done and change it, and the user is not limited in doing choices in a pre-defined order. -- Polytropon >From Magdeburg, Germany Happy FreeBSD user since 4.0 Andra moi ennepe, Mousa, ... ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

That's a point especially when you want to turn an older 150 MHz P1 into a worthful part of the IT society. :-) No, honestly: If the GUI installer just runs on a narrow subsets of up-to-date GPUs, there are major problems. Especially when a server has no GPU at all. Let me state this: correct screen detection is already a problem with "the big" X, how should "a small" installer get this right with its limited resources? Mind this: The installer runs in a very limited setting, while X can rely on an already running system. Good ways to go (for those who want it this way) are PC-BSD, DesktopBSD and FreeSBIE. > I find it fast and efficient the way it is. Which makes it modern, in my opinion. The problem is that if the graphics isn't optional (if it's the default), the whole thing is *limiting* the actions you can do with it. like installing over serial port or without mouse. both i use ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"
