Hitting kern.openfile ~= kern.maxfiles
Hi all, I am getting sporadic Xorg / KDE lockups or process crashes. It seems to be related to hitting the kern.maxfiles value. What I am seeing looks like a lot of unclosed file descriptors that are clogging the system badly. FreeBSD 8.0-RELEASE #0: Sat Nov 21 15:48:17 UTC 2009 Xorg 7.5 KDE 3.5.10_7 Firefox 3.6.8,1 I use Kmail to access my dovecot server on another box. Symptoms include messages like unable to cd into /home/me/stuff/next_level Or unable to access a shared lib. If I close konqerer or kamail or firefox, Then it sometimes comes good, other wise the best solution is to logout of KDE / Xorg and (re)startx again. At the command prompt, without Xorg / KDE running I usually see and kern.openfiles value of about 350, It will jump up to about 900 or more on the startx which also launches KDE, that up to arounf 1, 11000 with Kmail, konqerer and firefox running. It will sometime hover there for days, Then go up and cause freezes, nonstarts etc . Other times it will go up Within a hour or so I've looked at tuning(7) and currently kern.maxfiles is set to 24000. I have hald and dbus running for xorg Any udeas ? -- Murray Taylor Bytecraft Systems Special Projects Engineer P: +61 3 8710 0600 D: +61 3 9238 4275 F: +61 3 9238 4140 |_|0|_|"Absence of evidence |_|_|0|is not evidence of absence" |0|0|0|Carl Sagan --- The information transmitted in this e-mail is for the exclusive use of the intended addressee and may contain confidential and/or privileged material. I guess if someone demands a crappy program, you either give it to them or effectively convince them to get it from someone else. Why not? :-) From my limited testing, I found it suitable for most of my "I don't care" customers who do not use indentation or quoting properly. But the advantage of IMAP (e. g. cyrus-imap, courier-imap) is that you can use ANY client program, therefore any web-based mailer you want. There are several others available, such as sqwebmail or openwebmail with different features... Last Stacker patent expires May 14th
Everyone: The last of the Stac data compression patents, granted in 1991, expires on May 14th of this year. For a long time, all implementations of PPP for FreeBSD have had stubs for the Stac compression methods (in particular, MPPC; see, for example, /sys/netgraph/mppc.c) and there's now absolutely no reason for them to do so anymore. (Linux, in fact, has jumped the gun and has compression code available.) Purgatory would be Ubuntu, where installing something with Synaptic doesn't require you to track all the (recursive) dependencies yourself, but uninstalling Evolution can break the whole system because of the insanely inclusive dependency policies for packages. -- Chad Perrin [ original content licensed OWL: http://owl.apotheon.org ] pgpfSWO25iwLE.pgp Description: PGP signature

You need to diagnose why your fetch is bombing out. Start by checking over your own equipment and try to eliminate that as a source of problems. Make sure all your cabling is in good condition and that all network plugs are correctly seated. Check for packet errors: # netstat -i Anything non-zero in the Ierrs or Oerrs columns is a cause for concern, especially if the error counters are going up over time. If your gateway/router has the capability, check for the same sort of errors there. Having eliminated your own kit as a source of problems, try looking for network problems between the portsnap servers and you. mtr(8) is good for this purpose, but (of course) catch22: to install it, you'ld need a working ports tree... mtr will show up packet loss on intermediate network links, and various sorts of routing problems. If these are present, then you need to contact your ISP who should be able to sort things out on your behalf. Finally, one thing that can screw up portsnap is a poorly implemented transparent HTTP proxy. My advice: *don't use ISPs that force you to use transparent proxying*. However, if this is what you are lumbered with, then there is a simple work-around: use csup(1) instead of portsnap(8). csup doesn't run over HTTP, so it can't be mangled by broken proxies. Now, if you need help with any of this, you can certainly post here, but for best results you'll need to supply a lot more detail about exactly what it was you did and exactly what the result was. Cut'n'paste from the terminal is good, or use script(1) to save a transcript of a terminal session. Personally, I agree entirely with the idea of running your own mail server -- so long as you have a sufficient level of competence, and I think most of the people in this thread would be entirely capable. Unfortunately that's not true of the majority of most ISP's clientele, and bitter experience has led them to clamp down on SMTP-from-home in various ways. Some ISPs are friendly to more technically adept users -- mine is a case in point -- but these are few and far between. Even so, you can still run your own servers. You can get a minimally spec'd machine (virtual or physical) at quite a reasonable price nowadays. Polytropon -- given your location, have you checked out hetzner.de?
