If you don't already know that memory is zeroed by default it would be obtuse to infer that arbitrarily sized anonymous mappings are zero-filled, just because a few bytes of padding are zero-filled. Consequently your quote had no relevance to whether memory obtained by malloc is zero-filled. However, by taking that sentence out of context it was made unclear what "extensions" referred to. A casual reader could have assumed that it was possible to make zero-filled extensions to the object through mmap. If that were true then your position, that the two cases are similar, would be be quite reasonable. I knew this but had forgotten so it is logical that first copy the pkg install, duh! Second, EzJail just copies the soft link and this of course will not work just like that for obvious security reasons. I erased the jail and tried a second time... So here is what I did and seems to work: 1) Create your jail flavour standard with packages and all 2) Start the jail. This will install packages 3) Stop the jail 4) Copy the entire /usr/local of your compile jail to your new jail 5) Start the working jail This seems easy enough and seems to be working perfectly! What I have is different flavors of compiling jails: php52, php53, catalyst 5.8, apache22, etc. Those are never used for production. Only to compile and generate the packages for the EzJail flavours. The other option would be to phisically copy the contents of /usr/local to the flavour but I think it's a better idea to let the packages install and _then_ copy /usr/local over that. Anyway, it's working so cool! Man, FBSD really rocks! Regardless of the thousands of technical benefits, the clean cut separation of system and applications, _and_ Jails is to me, one the greatest things about FBSD. -- Alejandro Imass > Thanks! > > -- > Alejandro Imass > ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

Ezjail and Flavours
Hi, I've been using flavors for a while but only simple stuff like /etc and /pkg So what I have is a bunch of base jails where I just install ports and the copythe packages over to the flavours. Now I want to create a Perl Catalyst base jail, but something I installed via ports and others via CPAN. Question: what gets executed first with EzJail? the pkg installation or the file copy? Mi idea is to soft-link the complete /usr/local directory of the compiling jail in the specific flavour so after the packages get installed I can just copy everything else over /usr/local It should be pretty safe either way I guess but probably there are people with a lot more experience with EzJail here ;-) Thanks! -- Alejandro Imass ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

It seems to me to be unreasonable to infer anything about > anonymous mappings from this. When an anonymous object first gets a pagein, it grabs a free page and zeros it. Generally, the virtual memory system fetches new pages from a cache of zeroed pages. In either case, pages are zeroed before a process gets access. This is part of the general background info on virtual memory and I wouldn't expect it to be documented in the mmap man page. Off topic, the maillist is apparently filtering out my posts. They are touchy and really designed with TLER in mind. On the other end of the spectrum is a pure software RAID such as gmirror. I don't know all that much about the innards but I believe a pure software RAID run on JBOD will work with consumer grade drives just fine most of the time. The in-between caveat is the so-called 'fakeraid' sets of controllers. These are what you're most likely to find as a cheap 'feature-add' on a consumer desktop motherboard. Things like Intel RAID Matrix and such are known not to work well with non-Windows environments. However, much of the time these will still work fine if RAID functionality is turned off in BIOS and the connected drives are JBOD, with a pure software RAID applied instead of trying to utilize the motherboard BIOS RAID. My web development server at home has a pair of Raptors on an ICH5 controller with gmirror and has been completely trouble free for about a year now. I'd stay away from the "Green" drives that spin down all the time. Even a pure software RAID solution is likely not going to be happy with them. -Mike ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

Will gmirror configuration > significantly benefit from things like TLER, or it would rather be > harmful, like when using these disks as single ones in desktop > applications? gmirror doesn't do all of the really fancy stuff an expensive hardware RAID card will. So, if one disk in a mirror fails a write, the mirror breaks and has to be resynch'd. With gmirror that means manually entering a sequence of commands to remove and re-add the drive to the gmirror. "Enterprise" grade drives can be much more reliable over all as they are designed for 100% duty, whereas with consumer grade the expectation is that the drive will be turned off much of the time. This is typically one of the distinguishing features between SAS and SATA as well. "Green" drives can be particularly bad with FreeBSD, as they frequently end up spinning up and down continuously, which both wastes a lot of power and also shortens the life of the drive: neither of which adds to the actual (rather than claimed) green credentials of the device. Decide how much disk space you want, and what your budget is, then buy the best quality drives that match your criteria. I'd turn off TLER.
