i386 vs. amd64
Ever since 8.X (my system is now 9.1-RC3 [done via csup]) been using i386 with the following main ports: x11-wm/xfce4 www/firefox www/linux-f10-flashplugin11 editors/libreoffice www/tomcat-7 www/apace22 devel/aegis (I am the maintainer) devel/fhist devel/cook java/openjdk6 emulation/virtualbox-ose (and additions) print/cups I have avoided amd64 in the past due to some or not all them working, but want to switch if possible because PAE seems to be broken now on i386. So I have the following questions: 1. Will all the above ports (and their dependencies) work on amd64? 2. Is there any way to do a in place switch to amd64 or do I need to rebuild the system from the ground up? 3. switching from i386 to amd64
I have been using i386 (-STABLE) for years now and was wondering if switching to amd64 finally makes sense (i.e. are enough ports working on it now [xfrce4, firefox, libreoffice, openjdk-6, tomcat, mysql, apache22, flash, cups, devel/aegis, devel/cook, devel/fhist, virtualbox-ose, nvidia-kmod are the minimal ones I need]) the main reason for asking is PAE seems to be broken now and virtualbox-ose refuses to let me install 64 bit OS's like Win 8. ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

Re: Lennart Poettering: BSD Isn't Relevant Anymore
Just a side note I am the managing partner in a software development firm and they *ONLY* reason we have not released the majority of our internal lib is because we are essentially giving something of huge value (to us) up for nothing in return but if there was money involved to compensate for the time and effort we put into writing the lib we would gladly contribute it to any deserving project. But, sadly since we live and die as consultants by having a unique competitive advantage (in this case a lib that adds commercial value to our work by completing projects faster). Fwd: FreeBSD on Rackspace Could
For us it is mostly cost but the other advantage (with RS at least) is you can size the "hardware" to fit your needs and not get any more then you need... for example when we first started our consulting firm back in July we bought 256MB of RAM (RS sizes the Disk, CPU, Bandwidth, etc. as a multiple of RAM) and then moved to 512MB in Sept. and except for the 10 mins it took for RS to transfer our server image from a 1U VM to a 2U VM (1U = 256MB/RAM) the move was completely painless and no time and effort was needed to update the OS, 3rd party apps, our custom made code, etc Like I said early the only downside of using RS as our primary server provider (even though we use it for internal development only [but since each of the 3 partners lives in a different part of the US it is much cheaper and easier then having it in one of our houses because none of our ISP's allow static IP's for non-business users which is twice the cost almost]) -- Forwarded message -- From: Tom Worster Date: Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 9:34 AM Subject: Re: FreeBSD on Rackspace Could To: dalesc...@shaw.ca Cc: FreeBSD On 11/13/10 6:32 PM, "dalesc...@shaw.ca" wrote: >> but dedicated/vps does not offer what cloud computing does. > >What do feel are the advantages of the cloud? i haven't used one yet but, as far as i can tell, the interesting differences derive from how the could platform implements network, storage and compute elements in a distributed hardware system meshed up with a mesh interconnect (presumably of the high-performance computing type). the resulting advantages for me: the storage arrays are raid 10 and all their responsibility not mine; shared file systems are part of the platform so i don't need to mess around with nfs; load balancing (which i currently can't afford) is part of the network platform; so is the address juggling needed for high availability (failover and restoration); and the price for each vm seems to allow me maybe 2 or 3x as many hosts as i get with dedicated servers so i can separate the db servers from the rest of the app and assign no more memory than i need to each vm. in summary, it seems i can get the high-availability, load-sharing architecture i want at a price that's beyond my budget with dedicated hosts. and it looks like there's a bunch of other nice aspects that aren't radical but will be time savers: backups, standby images, simpler sysadmin (there's a lot less to a cloud server "slice" than a whole computer), monitoring, persistence. does this begin to answer your question? this weekend i tried out gentoo on a wee celeron box i have. how to recursively symlink every file in a dir
I want to make it so every file is a seperate symlink in dir2 if and only if it is a regular file (not a dir) in dir1... the reason is if the file is unchanged then use symlink but I can rm the symlink and replace it with a non-symlink: To show the problem I am attempting to solve: foo: (owned by fred) arf: ack in barney's account: ln -s ~foo/ foo rm foo/arf/ack# Permissioin denied ... it should nuke the symlink and let me then do something like "touch foo/arf/ack Note there are over 500 files upto 5 dirs deep in the dir I want to symlink from the final application is our version control system (devel/aegis) keeps seperate repos for different source code projects (for obvious reasons) and we want to make it so in normal operation we can symlink tne source tree from one project into an other but if we want to make a local modificiation to the "foreign" source tree all we have do is (sorry for the aegis commands but I think the idea is clear): rm src/foreign/foo.c aenf src/foreign/foo.c cp ~aegis/foreign/baselins/src/forgein.c vi src/foreign/foo.c # to make local modifications And before someone suggests a ar library we purposely *DO NOT* want the modified libs to be installed until later ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

OT: XML newbie
I am a relative XML newbie (i.e. our backend does spit out some XML I wrote but it just slapped together with no knowledge of the underlaying structure of XML)... Now I am going back and actually learning XML... our main application is to insert XML directly into XHTML documents and use either CSS or XSLT (don't know enough to pick yet) to style them without resorting to javascript... Now my question what is a good/reasonable set of command line tools for working with/debugging/testing all this in such a way I do not need to rely on the browser... specifically what types (and specific ones if there is a preference) tools do I need and are there any recommended procedures for dealing with XML from the command line in the future we may want to also do Java parsing of XML but that seems to be well handled already in the JDK (1.6) API thanks in advance ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

Re: dummies version of dummies to setup printers in freebsd
This may or may not be suitable for your situation but this is how I generally set printers up: 1. Install print/cups (yes the full wrapper port) 2. Edit your /etc/make.conf by adding a line that says no LPR 3. Add CUPS_ENABLE="YES" to your /etc/rc.conf 4. Manually start cups (run "cupsd" as root) 5. Point your web browser to http://localhost:631 6. Click on adminstration-->Add Printer 7. Enter what ever you want on the first screen 8. (This step will vary based on how your printer is connected... in this case I assume it is networked like mine is) if your printer is a standard network printer CUPS should find it automatically if it doesn't otherwise socket://[IP] where IP is the IP of the printer (you will have to search the web perhaps for non-network printers) 9. Enter the type of printer it is off the menu (cannon is not limited so you will need to search for the right PPD file) 10. Click on add-printer 11. The user name and password is the user name and password for any account on the machine (I have never tested anything but root or my personal account) 12. Print a test page if everything has gone well proceed if not try to figure out what you missed 13. Click on printers and set the new printer to be your default printer 14. Since by default the base system installs lpd when it is installed you need to deinstall it the easiest way to do this as root do: rm /usr/bin/lp* /usr/sbin/lp* 15. If everything has gone well up to now try to print from the command line with something like "lpr /etc/passwd" 16. If step 15 worked reboot and try to print again 17. (only if you have a desktop manager or other GUI stuff installed) Make sure that all your commonly used GUI applications can print 18. Your done (well almost) 19. (optional) if you do a lot of command line printing you may want to install a pritty print program like print/enscript-letter and alias it to lpr in your .cshrc or the equiv 20. It should be the first param (i.e. starts on byte 12 of the frame)... $ebp points the next stack frame (i.e. where the next push will happen) so to really understand you need to look 12 bytes "below" edp... For example I used the following loop to find what func a call came from (since I don't have the orginal code any more this is psedo): do ptr=(*edb) +4 // gives you the return addr for the current frame while ptr!=desired frame addr the edb+12 has be done with inline asm when the loop is done ptr-4 is the start of the frame your intrested in thus ptr-4+12 is the this param. A small caution here doing this kind of in stack ptr math can lead to some very bizzare bugs... for example the above loop combined with a param ptr deref (i.e. treat the param of intrest as a ptr) lead to the strangest bug I have seen in my 20 year career... essencially lets say I had a loop to go through params to see which one of interest (I was using this as a way of automating some aspects of a OO RDBMS), which in my case was the first param of a ptr type whose value was -1 [the db would then do some db magic and replace it with a ptr to a real instance read from disk]... now that being said lets say "a" is the offset of the current param and "b" is the offset of current param we are testing such that: while(b > I think it reads wrong value from symbol table or stack frame.
