Have I poisoned something in USB filesystems?
I have 2 mem sticks and several CF cards from a Nikon Coolpix camera. In the past I've freely used these both ways, through USB. My OS is, via uname -a: FreeBSD daisy.local 7.0-RELEASE FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE #0: Sun Feb 24 10:35:36 UTC 2008 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC amd64 I had a problem with a new 4GB CF card which wouldn't mount in an audio recorder (M-Audio Microtrack), and tried formatting it using the recorder's own formatter. OK so far. But it wouldn't mount on my FreeBSD. So I perhaps unwisely tried working from scratch, rebuilding the MBR (copied from /boot/mbr) and using fdisk from there. Now I can mount it and all the other (photo) CF cards, but xv(1) for the first time complains of *.jpg saying: filename: Corrupt JPEG data: premature end of data segment and quits. At one time I guessed perhaps badly that I should use fdisk with powers of two and rebuild a CF card with 64 heads and 32 sectors; let the #cyls fall out. Looks good, but now fdisk on all my USB CF cards says those are the numbers unless I use fdisk -i -t. Yet I can reboot. When I do, CF cards still mount and are still not viewable with xv. something strange has happened and I wonder if some persistent data regarding msdosfs structures has been written. I had hoped that #cyl, #head, #sec values would be ignored in favor of LBA, but I guess I'm wrong. Any ideas? End-of-life for my amd64 ?
I installed FreeBSD-RELEASE6.2 last January, and wonder if there will be a 6.3. Just discovered freebsd-update(8), tried it out, and saw: WARNING: FreeBSD 6.2-RELEASE is approaching its End-of-Life date. It is strongly recommended that you upgrade to a newer release within the next 4 months. 1. Now I wonder if I'll have to rebuild my filesystems again when 7.0 comes out. ...releases/amd64 contains only 6.1 and 6.2 among the ISO images. 2. I've been a wannabe sysadmin for years and have enjoyed FreeBSD since it was 386BSD. However, I am slow to catch up, and would appreciate (and suggest) short links to various entities which are either recent or important to an admin. A checklist, much less than a man page, and more an introduction, e.g. freebsd-update(8) does just that, and may be useful once the current release has been in use for more than a few months. firefox plugins
I'm unable to find any reference to amd64 on Firefox FAQ and other info sources. I have an EVGA mobo with an AMD64 running FreeBSD 6.2 perfectly, with Firefox. But every attempt at a plugin complains either that it isn't windows or that it's an amd64. I really want to run Flash material. Any ideas? Chuck Bacon -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] ABHOR SECRECY -- DEFEND PRIVACY PS: next I may ask about codecs for Audacity :-) PPS: I try to be complete, so here's uname -a: FreeBSD daisy.local 6.2-RELEASE FreeBSD 6.2-RELEASE #0: Fri Jan 12 08:32:24 UTC 2007[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC amd64 ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

8/25/06 I have tried to use portsnap; it seems like a good way to get my feet wet into the world of incremental updates. Re: Getting NTP (ntpd, ntpdate) to work
Thanks for the return! I've discovered my ISP has apparently shut off port 123 (NTP), and if I dontpdate -u ntp.cape.comI get my time set! But ntpq lacks ntpdate's option to use an unprivileged port. I guess time is come to ask my ISP. (Shouldn't I have done tha before :-] Again thanks! Chuck Bacon -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] ABHOR SECRECY -- DEFEND PRIVACY PS: Yes, I use netmask 255.255.255.240 (0xfff0); a vain hope that there's a tiny increment of security in it, and a belief in the definitions of net classes. I had expected that GENERIC would impose only slight filtering somehow, and certainly not shut off NTP! I guess I need help. If you've loaded a firewall such as IPFW in /etc/rc.conf a kernel module will be loaded for it, if it's not compiled statically into hte kernel already (which it isn't on GENERIC for either 5.3-RELEASE or 6.1-RELEASE). kldstat will list loaded modules (and the IPFW module is ipfw.ko). in FreeBSD-4.5R: nl_langinfo() - where is it?
I've downloaded the FreeBSD 4.5-version of OpenOffice.org1.1.0 - this is the second version of OpenOffice.org I've tried. Incanting openoffice-1.1 (or any of the symlinks which point to it) results in the message /usr/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: /usr/local/OpenOffice.org1.1.0/program/libsal.so.3: Undefined symbol nl_langinfo I built my kernel with options COMPAT_LINUX and P1003_1B (not sure if either matters), and installed everything from the 4.5 CD. Or did I? I expect RTFM you fool! but really am a bit over my head. Help?
