the portupgrade apache21 dice throw

2005-04-18 Thread Chiang Seng Chang
Hi,
Whenever I portgrade apche (port is www/apache21), I would get the error:
find: /usr/local/include/apr-1/apr.h: No such file or directory
But sometimes it would work without the error.
I think what I did has time was to deinstall the required by apache21
packages and apache21 by force, reinstall, and fixup the portsdb
inconsistency later. But I could not pinpoint what is causing the problem.

Anyone else is sufferring from this ? Any cure ?
Regards.

Help with GIANT-LOCKED in REL5.3

2005-03-07 Thread Chiang Seng Chang
Hi,
Anyone knows if GIANT-LOCKED is something new in 5.3 ?
I have on the same machine running 5.2 which does not have any
giant-locked in dmesg.

The only difference is that I changed the bios to boot 5.3 from the
3ware raid drive. (oh, and I disabled a lot unused drivers in the 5.3
kernel config.)

Thanks.

You need linux-sun-jdk14 installed to bootstrap the native jdk14
build. It depends on (the Linux) libc.so.6, which it tries to get
from linux_base. However, linux_base-debian also provides that file,
so I'm not sure why it's trying to install another linux_base. Is the
file there? Are you ports up-to-date?

Chiang,
Been there myself.
You need to load a kernel module:
kldload linprocfs.ko
and then mount the linux process file system.
I have in my /etc/fstab:
linprocfs   /compat/linux/proc   linprocfs
  rw 0   0
(the above should only be on one line)
After mounting the linprocfs and doing a 'make clean',
then recompiling I was able to get java installed.
I know it takes a long time to compile...but it was
the only way that I could get it to work myself.
Hope this helps,

Re: Leaving a server on all day

I also have an always-on headless server running for like 3 years now
without any problem.

I use it for: apache, samba, vpn, postfix (the usual server apps).
I think the key is to use the minimal (translate: cooler, less power
hungry) components.

Mine is P2-400 with 5400 rpm HDDs.
A UPS would be a nice addition.
The ONLY issue I have is it takes a few *days* to do portupgrade -ar ;-)
maybe I should just remove all the X stuff.

Is it true that the heat buildup in a home system (rather than a heavily

reason to turn it off during the day when I am not home?
This is only my personal experience:
I have got a PIII running all day for over 2 years now (my server): no
problems and I am using just the small fan it came with.
I had two AMD's (a K6 and now an Athlon): for both I had to buy bigger
fans since they started doing strange things after a while.
At work I have seen three IDE harddisks decease on workstations during
the last four and a half years, but never a SCSI harddisk. These
workstations are shut down and rebooted quite often.

So *my* summary for your private server would be:
- Leaving it on all day will not kill your harddisks, in the
  contrary: even cheap ones will live longer.
- AMD processors tend to run hot, so if you have one, you should
  look for a good fan.

Well... X is not started automatically (a.k.a. no gdm/kdm)... sometimes
I'd like to play with some X stuff...

I know there are other solution, like build on a fast machine and
install onto the slow one. I didn't bother because 1) the server is
still working while the upgrade is taking it's own sweet time, and more
importantly 2) I have no fast machine ;-)

I put x11 into the ignore list in pkgtools.conf, but the recent perl 5.8
upgrade seems to ignore that and build everything anyway.

Re: defining knobs in pkgtools.conf question

but I found this in /var/db/pkg/python/options:

# This file is auto-generated by 'make config'.
# No user-servicable parts inside!

_OPTIONS_READ=python-2.3.3_5
WITH_THREADS=true
WITHOUT_HUGE_STACK_SIZE=true

So I suppose the safest way is to install a port interactively the 1st
time and then import the options file into pkgtools.conf

 I think that you only need to match the variables used in the

  WITH_PYMALLOC=1

 Don't forget you'll need to set BATCH as well.

  I guess my question is how to decide wheather to use WITH_XXX=1 or
  WITHOUT_XXX=0 ?

 Set the exact same variables as the Makefile is testing.

  does WITH_XXX=0 result in #defined(WITH_XXX) returning false ?

 I believe not, as defined() only tests if that name is defined,
 not what its value is.

 It'll be going for a while yet. The smart thing to do on slow
 hardware is to install from packages.

upgrade a port

2004-04-23 Thread Chiang Seng Chang
currently i have openldap client 2.1 installed.

$ pkg_glob -r openldap-client-2.1.30
openldap-client-2.1.30
kdeutils-3.2.2
kdebase-3.2.2
kdenetwork-3.2.2
kdegraphics-3.2.2
kdegames-3.2.2
kdelibs-3.2.2
gnupg-1.2.4_1
samba-3.0.3.p2_1,1

if i want to use version 2.2, do i just simply:

 pkg_deinstall openldap-client-2.1.30
 portinstall net/openldap22-client

i suspect step 1 would fail because there are dependency, or switching them
around would work ? as in:

$ portinstall net/openldap22-client
$ pkg_deinstall openldap-client-2.1.30

Re: upgrade a port

2004-04-23 Thread Chiang Seng Chang
portupgrade wont work because ver 22 was not installed in the first place.

pkg_deinstall ver 21 wont work because there are dependencies.

portinstall ver 22 wont work because ver 21 is there.

how do i get out of this catch-22 ?

A better idea would be
portupgrade -r openldap22-client
The -r recursively upgrade all packages that are dependent on
openldap22-client.
if you specify -rf it will force a recompile of all ports that are dependent
on it. Much better idea, although it does take longer.

pkg_delete -f old pkg
pkgdb -F# just to be sure
portinstall new pkg
	(Crude, but effective.)

Slightly less crude would be something like
portupgrade -o new pkg -f old pkg

Re: iptables to ipfw

2004-04-22 Thread Chiang Seng Chang
Thanks, everything is working now.

It turns out that openvpn configures tun0 with too small a MTU which causes
the black hole router effect (i think). Problems occured like able to net
use samba share but unable to list files, etc. Once the MTU was upped, all
seems to work now.
