Normal CPU usage with a PPP connection

2008-02-24 Thread Dylan Smith
Hey guys, i'm running 6.3-R with (i think) userland ppp to connect to my
ADSL provider over PPPoE.
I build a number of graphs(mrtg) for system stats and i am noticing that
under heavy load on my ppp connection, that is sustained 150KB/s for an
hour or so my cpu usage, based on my graph, hovers around 20% (haven't
looked at it in top yet but if there isn't a simple solution/reason for
this i will look into what sort of usage it is). The box is a home
router/server so at any 1 time isn't doing anything else that i can see
would account for this. I also noticed that this usage increase does not
occur with traffic coming/going on the inward facing interface, which
regularly has transfer speeds around 10 MB/s.

I'm running a AMD X2 3800+ with 2GB ram. Is this sort of usage normal?
Is there something i can do to bring it down?

Although i am a Gentoo Linux user in terms of my desktop system I've
found XFCE4 to be very nice, it is very lightweight and and fairly
customizable. It comes with a few basic applications such as an gui
archiving tool and text pad(called mousepad), and some other basic
things, however it is not as involved in terms of included applications
as either Gnome or KDE. It is build around the gtk toolkit and so most
Gnome applications fit into place perfectly, however it is more a matter
of picking and choosing the applications that you prefer rather than
using the ones that come standard with the DE.

Quick question, if you are running a non-X system why, or even more
importantly, how is Firefox-bin running in the first place?

It can be done, but it's a PITA with Sendmail. Look into
/usr/ports/mail/ssmtp. We use it on our systems here where we need to
simply get root's email off the box. Simple configuration file, works
well.

Thanks for that little suggestion.
Would this mean that i could just disable sendmail
totally(sendmail_enable="none")?
