Make sure you install X by using the meta-port x11/xorg. You'll miss

7.0 installation problem

2008-01-30 Thread FreeBSD User
Hello,

I have tried installing FreeBSD 7.0-Current for amd64, and I am having
problems with my mouse and video card.

My hardware is as follows:

Gigabyte p35-ds3r motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz (Q6600)
NVidia 8400GS
Microsoft Comfort Optical 3000 mouse
Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000

Problem 1:
The mouse is not working at all. When I look at the output of dmesg,
I see the mouse (ums0), however no movement. I have gone into sysinstall
and tried every available option under mouse configuration, but I can't get
it to work.

Problem 2:
I cannot get X started. I get the following errors:

Failed to load module nv (module does not exist, 0)
Failed to load module mouse (module does not exist, 0)
Failed to load module kbd (module does not exist, 0)
No drivers available

Does anybody have an idea when 7.0 will be released? It looks like the
schedule hasn't been updated, and it was scheduled for January 14th.

Where can I find additional information?

Watching those that are usable under Unix/Linux (LinuxPrinting.org) and that
they are expensive, I see what the printer 2605 of HP it works perfectly
unless for some small problem.
Someone has installed it and it knows to me to say if effectively it is

Your drive probably isn't MMC-capable. Try updating the firmware. For
 a Samsung go here:
 http://www.samsungoms-europe.com/samsung.php?section=download and get
the firmware updating tool (it's called LiveUpdate or something). It
only works in Windows, so hope that isn't a problem. If there's a
firmware upgrade for your drive, it might fix this error and allow the
FreeBSD dvd-tools to read your burner's configuration.

Fwd: Dell PowerEdge 400SC fan speed monitoring

2004-09-03 Thread FreeBSD user
Howdy gang,

I've got a Dell PowerEdge 400SC running 5.3-BETA2 nicely, and I'd like
to be able to monitor the internal fan RPM, if possible. The PE 400SC
motherboard is very similar to an Intel D875PBZ. I've added the
following SMBus options to my kernel:

# smbus interface to Intel ICH5 management
device  smbus   # Bus support, required for smb below.
device  ichsmb
device  smb
# IIC devices to support motherboard monitoring
device  iicbus
device  iicbb
device  iicsmb

# devices I've added at the suggestion of Google and man pages:
device  intpm
device  pcf

But none of the fan speed monitoring ports I've tried will give any
useful results for fan speed. I've installed sysutils/xmbmon, which
gives reasonable looking values for the chipset, motherboard, and CPU
temperatures (95, 104, and 88 degrees F, respectively), but lists fan
speed as 0. sysutils/healthd, when run in non-daemon mode using the
SMBus, reports tempertature at 0, 0, 0, and fan rotational speed at an
unreasonable-looking 0, 22500, 9642. sysutils/consolehm won't compile
in SMBus support unless I symlink /usr/include/dev/smbus/smb.h to
/usr/include/machine/, and then it reports 40.0 degrees C for all 3
temperature sensors and some wacky numbers for fan RPM like 8k, 33k,
and 16k.

Is anyone else able to monitor their PowerEdge 400SC fan speed(s)? Does
anyone have suggestions for getting this working? Am I just chasing my
tail with this? Tune in next week as we present the next gripping
episode of ... As the server turns!

Thanks,

Josh

I'm not understanding why, WITH_GTK2 requires GCC3.3 with mplayer,

Is there something special about mplayer, is the GCC version upto the

Also, is having the two version of GCC on the same system going to
cause any problems, or gotchas to look out for?

cant boot from large disk

2004-01-12 Thread FreeBSD User
Howdy Questions,

I am having problems with 4.8 Release booting from a large hard disk
(80 - 160G) on an old (socket7) motherboard.

I have the same problem with linux. Making the root partition
smaller that 1000M, puting it on the first disk, etc etc doesnt
help in either case. I have also tried a few different bootloaders,
in all cases, the bootloader either failed to load, or failed to
boot the OS.

With Linux (redhat7.x) I was able to build a bootable floppy on which
the location of the root partition was stored, and boot off that.
I could also interrupt the boot, enter different values, and boot
off of a different partition. Hardly ideal, but satisfactory.

I was kind of hoping to do the same thing with FreeBSD.
(which atm resides on a 160G HD with the root partition in a seperate
900M slice.)

Any hints ?

Cheers.
