2012-07-08 Thread Graham Bentley

Hi I have put together a little experimental FreebSD 9.0
box which comprises of ;

http://www.cartft.com/catalog/il/934
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-023-ZA
2GB RAM and a Sandisk SDSA3BD-054G 8GB SSD

The idea is a silent system I can tinker on - nothing serious.
I chose the guided install and accepted the default partition
/ fs layout. I thought the things where running a bit slow and
changed from 'native' in the BIOS to 'legacy' SATA and things
seem a bit quicker now however I am wondering if I am getting
the bext out of the SDD? I have read a little about 'aligning' and
4k sectors I think? If its running ok should I leave as is? Or do
you have tunning advice for me?

Thanks!

I shoud have been more specific. Im running xorg with vtwm
and trying to stay light / minimal as possible. Burncd is fine
for alot of jobs but not whilst eating toast. xcdroast seems
somewhat dated / clunky and is currently reporting that
theres no disc in drive even though I can mount said disc

Booting FreeBSD from Compact Flash

2010-07-06 Thread Graham Bentley
OK I confess that this is associated with FreeNAS however
it seems rather quiet over there on the support forums and I
know there are some knowledgeable BSD people on this
list who may be willing to help on this ...

Compact Flash: Kingston 4GB 45x Elite Pro [CF/4GB-S]
Target Mainboard: VIA EPIA-V1
* I D/L'ed FreeNAS-i386-embedded-0.7.2.5252.img
* I checksumed it with md5sum for WindowsXPP - it matched
* I used physdiskwrite v0.5.2 to write the image to CF on my desktop PC
* I hoooked up the CF to the target mainboard and booted the kernel
Now this is where things go awry  I end up at this prompt ;

mountroot>

I can see the Kinston is ID as ad0 a few lines above at ata0-master.
If I enter ? I get a list of boot devices as follows ; ad0c ad0a ad0
If I enter; mountroot> ufs:/dev/ad0a I get a 'panic: no init' message
and a reboot ; no other choice of boot device gives any such result.
CF boots perfectly hooked up to my desktop PC. On Via Mainboard
I have tried switching off all IDE 'modes' to zero etc but still no joy.
I tried using the verbose boot option and notice that following the CF
card being ID'ed I get the following ;

ad0 VIA check1 failed
ad0 Adaptec check1 failed
ad0 LSI (v3) check1 failed
ad0 LSI (v2) check1 failed
ado FreeBSD check1 failed

Would I be right in thinking that its chipset support for this baord is
whats
preventing access to the root of the OS/FS?

And if it is, is it possible to add module support somehow?

Thanks in advance of any help :)

Points very well made. In fact shouldn't we be campaigning against
such closed source perversion of our Open Standards Internet, not
complaining that one company doesn't make a media content viewer
for us?

This is exactly why Stallman harks on about freedoms etc it almost
feels pathetic; "Please Mr Adobe, we poor FreeBSD users don't have
a flash viewer, please make one for us too" bleat bleat

No probs. Download as .flv and play with mplayer.

Fw: UK Currency Symbol in 7.2 Console

2009-05-30 Thread Graham Bentley

OK, this is where I am up to. I have plugged my 7.1 Release hard disc
back in and I get £ signs no problem. So, I then unplug my KVM and
mini keyboard and plug standard ps2 kb / ps2 mouse in. I do a minimal
install of 7.2 Release from DVD and make sure I have uk.cp850 in my
/etc/rc.conf

Guess what? Theres no difference - still no £ signs at console, I get
a beep. So theres some difference in the way 7.2 looks at things
compared to 7.1. Out of interest the kb controler is on this mobo
- Asus M2N68-AM

I think its a bug or mis-detection etc

Do I report this? Or ask for help on a different list?

I dont mind doinf whatever tests are required to resolve this issue.

Re: 7.2 Release kills my XP Dual Boot

2009-05-27 Thread Graham Bentley

Is there any resolution to this? I had the same problem upgrading from
7.0 -> 7.2. I've been running FreeBSD dual-boot for over 10 years w/o
this problem in the past.

I re-ran my fdisk script from an old 6.x boot disk & recovered the XP
partitions, but can't boot 7.2. Re-installing 7.2 kills XP.

My system disk has 3 partitions: ad0s2 is first (XP recovery). Next is
ad0s1 (XP) followed by FreeBSD.

Thanks for any input.

Kent,

I tried for two days every recovery tool I could lay my hands
on both open source and proprietary I still could not recover
my mangled - well, whatever bootsec / mbr / partable

In could even do an XP repair, fixmbr, fixboot and almost
every disc checker said there was no issues with the sata disc.

I have P1[XP-NTFS], EXT1[NTFS], P2[3BSD]

I ended up doing a re-install of everything. I then took
an image of my boot sector / mbr and partables and
held on to my plumbs whilst trying to install 7.2 a second
time (I dont like to be defeated!)

This time, no probs although I have noticed BTX labled
the EXT1 as ? and not DOS as it used to.

Currently I cant get £ signs at the console or X but thats
another 7.2 story. I only have limited time and may well go
back to Slitaz !!!

Initially mouse and keyboard didnt work even with correct xorg settings.
Now you need hald_enable="YES" and dbus_enable="YES" in /etc/rc.conf and
the ms / kbd will be detected. Apparently this behaviour can be overridden
in xorg.conf itself with ;

Option "AutoAddDevices" "off"
Option "AutoEnableDevices" "off"

To the Section "ServerFlags"

Also, when creating your new xorg.conf (Xorg -configure) its best to add
Option "DontZap" "false" otherwise ctrl-alt-backspc wont get out out of X
and you end up pressing power button.

I also founf that X -config xorg.config.new -retro is best way to test new
xorg.conf

7.2 Release kills my XP Dual Boot

2009-05-15 Thread Graham Bentley
Hi All,

I downloaded the DVD version of 7.2 Release and did a minimum install
as usual before customizing and for the first time in years FreeBSD
installer has done something odd to my XP boot loader (whatever is
responisble?)

I know I'm likely to be told to go to a Windows forum but wondered
if anyone else has had the same problem?

Basically I can install FreeBSD, get the BTX loader prompt and boot
FreeBSD.

If I choose F1 I get an error message which started out as something
like 'invalid operating system' (can't quite remember!) then after
running fixmbr and fixboot as well as running file system checks
with ERD I am left with a 'trap 0006 exception' error that I
cant seem to resolve.

XP 'repair' says its doing what its supposed to but makes no
difference and Ive tried custom commands like ;

fixmbr \Device\HardDisk0
fixmbr \Device\HarddiskVolume1

to no avail. Its as if theses commands do nothing. Ive Googled an hour
and not come up with anything that helps.

I do have my stuff backed up but would like to avoid a re-install of
XP if poss. Luckily FreeBSD only takes me about 15 mins :)

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Re: Modern FreeBSD Installer?

2009-04-28 Thread Graham Bentley

[Sorry Rolf]

One of the things I absolutely love about FreeBSD
is the 'Minimal Install' option. I can't tell you how
fast you can install and boot the base system but
its F-A-S-T! Then, I can fetch latest ports and
install _what_I_Want_ - not what someone else
thinks I *might* want. This gets top marks in my
opinion.

I guess for desktop users there might be an option
"X-Windows + KDE" or Gnome or XFCE and
you get base plus X plus GUI ~ there probably is
but I never used them at all :)

Sorry if this has been said before ;-)

On my desktop FreeBSD this amount to about 6 jobs

Re: Marvell 88E8052 PCI-E LAN on FreeBSD 7.0 (PYUN Yong-Hyeon)

2008-10-31 Thread Graham Bentley

I'm not sure you suffers from the same problem but there was a
Tx checksum offload related bug in msk(4) driver and it was fixed
in HEAD. How about applying the diff in CVS rev 1.33 of if_msk?
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/sys/dev/msk/if_msk.c.diff?r1=1.32;r2=1.33;f=h

Would love to have a crack at this but have never 'applied diffs' before?!

I am guessing I look in to the source for the msk module, find line 2601,
add the code in the green box, then remake the module and copy over the
existing one?

If theres a step by step to the correct procedure I'd appreciate pointers.

As an aside I went back and added -txcsum -rxcsum whlist using the
msk module and that also worked.

Thanks!

Re: Seg Fault Action!

2008-10-30 Thread Graham Bentley

For one,
make sure your ports are up-to-date with your installed ports tree
before installing more ports.

Yep, done that :)

You can run the program under truss(1),
which will help you figure out what kind of bad data is being passed
to system calls (assuming that's where the failure is, but it's not
unusual for that to be the case).

OK will check out truss

You can generate a crash dump of
the program, and (you or someone else) can use a debugger to see where
it was when it failed -- usually a strong hint.

Is that what a core dump is?

Thanks for replies :)

Re: Marvell 88E8052 PCI-E LAN on FreeBSD 7.0

2008-10-30 Thread Graham Bentley

You need to keep something in mind here: Marvell does not give out
documentation for their cards publicly, so Yong-Hyeon has to
reverse-engineer and "tinker" with what he already knows. Some hardware
feature do not work, others are buggy, others work fine on specific
revisions of the chip while later ones break.

Don't get me wrong - I appreciate that people are working in the
trenches on this stuff and thats great about FreeBSD.

I only switched to the Marvel .ko as it was suggested on previous
questions list, so didnt spend much time with the stock 7.0 driver.

And if you tell me "Well Linux has support for this chip!", I will throw
the following evidence back in your face: Marvell and other companies
are giving Linux developers development PCI cards to develop drivers
with (sometimes even before the card is out in the market), so Linux has
the upper hand here. They are not doing this with the BSDs.

I guess even specs would be nice - hardware donations would be nicer
though :)

I would urge you to go out and purchase an Intel Pro/1000 PT card

Funnily enough, in the back of my mind I had the same thought upon
seeing the words 'Marvell' amongst the mobo spec. Thats said at
least they made an effort on supporting multi OS

http://www.marvell.com/drivers/search.do

even if they are a precious with their specs etc With some Vendors its
Windos or nothing.

Marvell 88E8052 PCI-E LAN on FreeBSD 7.0

2008-10-30 Thread Graham Bentley

Hi ALl,

I have a DFI LanParty Mobo that includes Marvells 88E8052
and 88E8053 LAN IF.

Using the module with 7.0 [msk] the network preformance
is terrible, Opera / Links stall, or wont page load at
all although pings to the router are fine?

I then tried using Marvells own driver the website [myk]
and the results where about the same.

Just before I was about to give up and put in my trusty
old 3Com 3C509 [xl] I noticed that in the Marvell doco
there where several tunable params so decided to try
out a few.

I discovered that adding -txcsum and -rxcsum (i.e.
disabling hardware checksuming) to the ifconfig
statement, the performance was as quick as it is
on that other OS!

It seems that hw cs is on by default so I added the
above to my ifoncfig line in /etc/rc.conf and now
all is snappy!

I was wondering how could this be the case and also
if anyone else had this issue with Marvell chips?

Seg Fault Action!

2008-10-28 Thread Graham Bentley

Hi All,

I have often wondered what to do if I compile a port and
immediatly after trying to run it I get a seg fault.

In the past I have just tried to find an alternative port
that did the same job, but it has always felt as though I
wasnt trying hard enough.

Yesterday after upgrading all my ports tree I decided to
get printing working and cups / HP stuff all works fine
as does the web gui to cups so I decided to try and
make xpp.

The result is 'Segmentation Fault' - thats it!

How do I go about finding out what caused it and how to
get the program running?

Any tips etc appreciated!

So if you rebuild your fluxbox port with the default settings,
transparency should work fine.

And that is exactlyt why I am asking - it doesnt!

As reported issuing a plain make results in fluxbox -info
output of -RENDER ie. it is NOT included !!!

Of course the first thing I did before my posts was to test
transparency which didnt work which led me to the list!

Any more suggestions appreciated though :)

I also don't understand how the 'Red Globe' with horns thing.
In my mind there can be nothing better than just the words

FreeBSD

Thinking about IBM's logo (the stripey IBM letters) I
suggest they have got it just right. Simple and Memorable.

There are alot of other logo's that do just that too. I think
you either go with letters and / or a symbol but if you go with
a symbol there has to be no mistaking it for what it represents.
My money would have been on using just the words / letters
FreeBSD (in a nice font that scales well - the one here is too
skinny / not bold enough imho particularly the BSD part)

Fwd: Returned mail: see transcript for details

2007-07-31 Thread Graham Bentley

Hi All,

Not sure how to correct this but I have created some
mp3's to share with a friend using mp3c. I have setup
filenaming like this ;

ArtistName_AlbumName_TrackNo_TrackTitle.mp3

It seems to work great under FreeBSd and I can see the
full filename.

I then burnt the tracks to DVD using ;

growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/cd0 -r -J -speed=4 /rips

I then checked the finished disc and the track names
are the same.

Taking that disc to another machine with that other
OS on some of the filenames are truncated badly in
that its the extension (.mp3) thats missing and
therefore clicking the .m3u playlist results in
winamp doing nothing.

What the best way to do this so the DVD will play
on 'anything' ?

Thanks in advance for advice etc.

CLI CD-Audio Copying 'On The Fly!'

2007-07-28 Thread Graham Bentley

Hi All,

I found this little script on a web page somewhere sometime ago
and modified it slightly (replaced 'eject' with 'cdcontrol')

#!/bin/sh
for i in /dev/acd0t*
do
dd if=$i of=/usr$i.cdr bs=2352
done
cdcontrol -f acd0 eject
cd /usr/dev
for i in acd0t*cdr
do
mv $i track${i#acd0t}
done
burncd -f /dev/acd1 audio *cdr fixate
cdcontrol -f acd1 eject
cd /usr/dev
rm track*.cdr
echo "All Done!"

It works quite well but only writes after the entire
number of tracks have been written.

I was just wondering if its possible that extra logic
could be applied whereby as soon as the first track
is ripped then a second process starts writing it
and so on - kind of like CD to CD copying 'On the Fly!'

As I am no programmer I wondered if anyone had already
done this and wouldnt mind posting their script or
suggestions?

Thanks in advance ...

3bsd# make showconfig
===> The following configuration options are available for
xfce4-print-4.4.1_1: LPR=off "Use lpr as printing system"
CUPS=on "Use cups as printing system"
LETTER=off "Use letter paper format instead of A4"

Its odd because the cups test page works, printing from
mousepad and firefox works, but abiword bombs completely.
In the short space of time I see it on the screen after
clicking print I can see there is no entry for the printer.

I have tried adding lpd_enable="NO" top rc.conf then realised
cups replaces lpd anyway so that was no help.

Somewhere along the line I have added

[system=10]
add path 'unlpt*' mode 0660 group cups
add path 'ulpt*' mode 0660 group cups
add path 'lpt*' mode 0660 group cups

to /etc/devfs.rules and

devfs_system_ruleset="system"

to rc.conf

I wanted to avoid having to buildword just now ...

and just read this thead ;

although lpd looks to be under /usr/sbin on my system?

Any further help on figuring this out appreciated!

Oddly, if I make the directories /dosd and /dosc change the owner
to admin:wheel and update my fstab I can access those as my user
(admin) but not when fstab is as quoted above ie under /mnt? I dont
get this as I have often used /mnt/dos type scheme in the past? It
seems as though /mnt has some special property? Perhaps I need to go

Re: Starting again from Scratch

2007-06-27 Thread Graham Bentley
Special thanks to Roland, Nikola, Manolis, Peter, Giorgos, Jonathon
for some great replies on this thread.

I have now done a re-install from scratch. Essentially I have done
a 'minimal' install (no ports/pkgs)- wow, this took literally just
a few minutes.

Next I 'portsnap fetch' and 'portsnap extract'

I then did 'make install' first for Xorg then next for Xfce4 metas.

And, yes, this took quite some time :)

Afterwards I have used the fetched ports for adding all the dekstop
stuff I like / use.

And on advice I will use portmaster to track events on these softs.

So, now I am happy with my new FreeBSD desktop. There are a few
small glitches though.

audacious - where did the plugins go? The site seems down as do the
alternatives. I tried the plugins src from OpenBSD altho slightyly
behind by 0.0.1 but cant get any sound?

I am using xmms now, I mainly play audio streams (www.somafm.com or
www.swissgroove.ch)

Is there any other player I 'should know about' ie is more actively
developed / supported? Beep? Zinf? Suggestions invited :)

And ... I cant mount my (other os) msdosfs as a user, Im sure I have
done this before, driving me nuts, cant think what I havent done?

--fstab entry--
/dev/ad0s5 /mnt/dosdmsdosfs rw 22
/dev/ad0s1 /mnt/doscmsdosfs rw 22
/mnt etc is 666 owned by root:wheel and my user is part of wheel group?

And lastly, cups webmin:631 refuses my root password ... is this a
cupsd.conf setting ?

As usual any advice on above greatly appreciated.

Greetings from not so sunny North West UK !

Cheers Roland,

Is it considered OK to update the ports and build up your worktop
*without* bothering with building world? Also, building a kernel
but leaving world at release?

My system is an Athalon2.4/1GB/NV5200 so seems quick enough and
I am not in that much of a hurry. However, I dont want to spend
hours and hours waiting for compiles...

Can you clue me up on xorg 'meta-port' ???

I can feel a re-install coming on

So, if I where to start again, I would ;

1) Install 'minimal' distrib from 6.2 rel CD1
2) portsnap fetch extract
3) make install my system

Then in future use portmaster as you say ?

Starting again from Scratch

2007-06-25 Thread Graham Bentley
OK, I am fairly new to FreeBSD and returning from a long while away.

I am currently working on an install I have performed from the 6.2
release discs I downloaded several days ago.

I chose X-Kern-Dev install and have a mixed bag of pkg_add -r
packages, some programs I have downloaded and compiled from source
from developers sites (Claws-mail and Xfce4 to name 2) as well as
apps I cd'ed into into /usr/ports/name and made [nvidia for 1]

Whilst I am aware there are more than serveral ways of doing things
and for different reasons I am inviting advice on my target install
which is a 'desktop' for basic office use, based on Xfce4.

I would like to thank Nikola for his advice and also ask what is
the generally accepted method of installing / keeping updated way
of getting things done?

I am only aware of the names cvsup, portupgrade, portmanager,
portsnap, make world etc and am getting this round my neck a
bit but this is what I have summized ;

1) Do basic [minimal] install of 6.2 rel from disc 1
2) pkg_add cvsup-without-gui and get the latest ports installed
3) Build *everything* from this ports tree [including base/kernel?]
4) Find out how to keep updated / informed on updates to packages
I have installed, and do so where necessary.

If anyone can advise, point me in the direction of tutorials
or step by steps, on the above It would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to understand why its not so great to just install
everything from pkg_add, whats the advantages of ports etc

Until then I am enjoying using my i386-unknown-freebsd6.2
installation - even if it more by good luck than good management :)

Thanks in advance of time spent in replying !

Mouse precision & acceleration in X+Xfce4

2007-06-24 Thread Graham Bentley
Hi All,

Is there anyone who has played with mouse pointer (cursor?)
settings in X / Xfce4?

I am using a TFT at 1280 x 1024 and just cant seem to get
speed / acceleration / accuracy that I am happy with.

If I speed things up in Xfce4 I can cover greater screen
area with less hand movement but the accuracy when stopping
at targets is bad (small buttons like on xmms for example)

I would be interested to hear from anyone who has
this (c)licked !!!

Help with mail Forwarding

2007-01-16 Thread Graham Bentley
Hi All,

I was hoping someone might throw me a few pointers on the following ;

I have FreeBSD 6.1 setup, running Apache / PHP / MySQL etc
In aliases I specify my most used ISP pop address and all mail for
root gets sent there from Charlie - this works great.

I am testing an osc cart and the two option for mail from the cart
are SMTP and mail() - guessing php mailer here.

I get absolutely nowhere with the SMTP method with mailing causing

Jan 16 22:13:24 rackserver sm-mta[82321]: l0GMDOII082321: localhost
[127.0.0.1] did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to Daemon0

however with the mail() method I can see mail for admin (specified in osc
cart)
appearing in /var/mail/admin

(editted this line in my /usr/local/etc/php.ini ; sendmail_path =
/usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i)

and can read it and it contains what I expect however in my /home/admin
I have a .forward file (theres also an mbox) specifying the same most used
ISP pop address but mail never makes it there?

If I log into to console as admin I can read the mail and it gets saved to
mbox
but my .forward is ignored. Where am I going wrong ?

Thanks !!!

Quick mail advice / Laptop use

2006-11-28 Thread Graham Bentley
Hi All,

I noticed that fetchmail created a file mbox but
Mutt creates a 'Mail' directory however the mail
seems to download into /var/mail

Mutt asks me on exit to copy to mbox format.

The Mail directory also has only one folder and
on exit is empty. /var/mail still has copies.

Can anyone clear up my confusions ;

Where should mail be located ?
How can I configure a 'sent items' for Mutt?
How can I create an address book for Mutt?

I know this would be better on the Mutt list
but I also know there are some big Mutt fans
here and asI am trying this on FreeBSD maybe
more relevent ?

And lastly, APM or ACPI what the best one to go
with on my HP OmniBook 6000 and how to configure
suspend etc etc

Thanks a mill for any advice !

WiFi Woes !

2006-11-26 Thread Graham Bentley
Hi All,

Can any WiFi gurus help me with this one ?

After clean minimal install of 6.1

# kldload wlan_wep
# kldload wlan_ccmp
# kldload wlan_tkip
# ifconfig ral0 inet 192.168.7.120 netmask 255.255.255.0 ssid cpc channel 11
wep wepkey 0x12345ABCDE

ifconfig ral0 now reports an association, it has the bssid and chnl for my
WAP
correct and the little light comes on the WiFi card. I can ping the ip4
address
of the ral0 interface and get replies however I cant ping the wap or router
?

I have double checked the chnl, ssid and hex key all are correct.

Have tried 'route add 192.168.7.1' and editting rc.conf by hand to no avail.

Anyone advise on this please ?

Thanks !

All repo's where tried without luck. I DL'ed them seperatly. The filename
was wrong in the script. I assumed that this was because 6.2RC1 .iso ports
list may be out of date ?

I didnt realise audio codecs could have security issues (noticed that
anything I install from ports carries a security notice?) however
I need to listen to my voicemail.

I alos tried the JRE / Fox setup which worked in 6.1 but not in 6.2

>if it really is a big problem for you, please consider submitting a PR with

OK, this wasnt a complaint, just trying to undersand what a RC is compared
to a full release. I realise also that there are 1000's of ports and not
every single one can be monitored and tested constantly.

What is the 'Official Procedure' for reporting problems with ports or
any other aspect ? I always try googling and this list in that order.

Re: Upgrade Question

2006-11-22 Thread Graham Bentley
You've confused STABLE with RELEASE. 6.2 has not reached RELEASE.
6-STABLE is the latest "these changes worked fine in CURRENT (right now,
aka 7) and have been MFCed (merged from current) so that more people can
try them out", which right now corresponds to the version of FreeBSDthat
is just about to be released which also happens to be called6.2-RC1
(release candidate 1)). When 6.2 is ready to go, a new RELEASEbranch is
created (6.2-RELEASE) which only gets security fixes.

So, if I want the 'latest version' that 'isnt a work in progress' (or at
least tested
to the point where it is know to be working correctly in the majority of
scenarios)

always use the RELEASE branches ?

Configuring Graveman as admin under X still wont scan for devices
and locks out. Works perfectly as root ? Any other offers - Thanks :)

Re: Newbie Experience

2006-09-12 Thread Graham Bentley
One question I often forget to ask myself is ;

"What is my end goal ?"

These days, if I want a non Windows desktop
that is quick and easy to install / update I use
this ; www.zenwalk.org [400MB .iso]

For servers, I use FreeBSD :)

Of course, you can use FreeBSD as a desktop
machine too ... but the learning curve might be
a bit steeper !!!

Putting FreeBSD to sleep?

2006-05-12 Thread Graham Bentley
Can anyone post some good pointers for setting
up ACPI or APM so that I get automatic susepend
afer x mins of inactivity and woken up on LAN
request ?

(in particular shut down disc / slow or shut
down psu fan - its the noise I am concerned
about)

I have looked at posts on rc.suspend/resume
for various power saving issues on laptops
but cant find and good resources on how to
do the above. Surely this must have been
done before by someone with a remote server
in a secret location :)

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

Security / kernel message interpretations please !

2006-05-12 Thread Graham Bentley

I posted about this a few days ago and its appeared again
in my security log (the backup routine log appears to be
fine)

+(sa0:ahc0:0:6:0): PREVENT ALLOW MEDIUM REMOVAL. CDB: 1e 0 0 0 0 0
+(sa0:ahc0:0:6:0): CAM Status: SCSI Status Error
+(sa0:ahc0:0:6:0): SCSI Status: Check Condition
+(sa0:ahc0:0:6:0): UNIT ATTENTION asc:28,0
+(sa0:ahc0:0:6:0): Not ready to ready change, medium may have changed
+(sa0:ahc0:0:6:0): Unretryable error

I have googled about and there is some suggestion that a
change of tape may cure this ie using DDS4 tapes rather
than DDS3 in a DDS4 drive. I also read about "Vendor
Specific ASCQ" but it was beyond me. I am going to leave
the same tape in and see if its repeated at tonites backup.

If this isnt something serious I will ignore it and go
away however I am curious and would really like to know
why :) (never stop asking...there are no stupid questions etc)

Thanks in advance :)

I am running 6.0 on a little rackserver.
Alot of the time its inactive and I was
wondering about trying to setup ACPI
the main reason being to spin down the
disc / PSU so its a bit quieter (its in my
office) I would require it to wake on
LAN activity. How feasable is this
and what steps do I need to take
to set it up ?

I am reading acpiconf man right now
but I suspect more is required.

I have set the BIOS to WOL, spin
down disc after 15 mins and ACPI
suspend type to S1.

Just tested acpiconf -s 4 and it
shuts the system down completely?

Any help appreciated - Thanks!

SCSI Tape Log Question

2006-05-10 Thread Graham Bentley
Although my backup appears to work fine I get this in the
security log ...

+(sa0:ahc0:0:6:0): 16384-byte tape record bigger than supplied buffer

+(sa0:ahc0:0:6:0): Not ready to ready change, medium may have changed
+(sa0:ahc0:0:6:0): Unretryable error

I will try another tape today. Any suggestions as to what could be causing
this ?

Thanks !

my question better (well, maybe not on a FreeBSD list ;)

I am looking to control Windogs (yuk!) Desktops remotely (and as

Remote screen control software - recommendations please

2006-04-21 Thread Graham Bentley
(OK I know this is OT but theres alot of good experience here
so please dont flame me :))

What are people using for this ?

I have used VNC and TighVNC in the past to good effect
although they do seem a bit laggy.

I notice that GoToMyPC is gaining in popularity but I suspect
you have to trust them with your credentials.

Some people say Remote Admin (about $20) is the best.

Any other recommendations / experiences / reviews ?

Thanks

Tape backup / Bizzare Device Question

2006-03-07 Thread Graham Bentley
Is there a way to create a hdd resore solution with
set of boot floppies that will support my tape drive
access the tape and restore the entire hard disc in
case of disc failure disaster ? ie So I could install
a new disc and be up and running without doing any
additional admin? I guess like a 'ghost' for scsi tape ?

Any advice / links etc apperciated.

Also

Description: Glass bulb, similar to light bulb but with
narrow end flared at bootom so it standsup. Inside,
a rotating wire device that has 4 squares of card like
material attached, like vanes.

One one side they are black on the other they are white.
When the sun shines brightly enough, the white side reflects
the light energy and the black side absorbs it. The vanes
spin around.

This does exist and has a name and I know there are
some very knowledgeable people on this list who will
know.

Whats it called. please !!!

I got to work on *nix.

However, you have to ring / mail APC
and ask them to send you out a serial
