Soundcard working (was: Soundcard not working)

Does the PCI_ENABLE_IO_MODES option also require PNPBIOS? I didn't have PNPBIOS in my kernel config. I think I'll try hardcoding the resources for the sbc driver and see what that does. For the record, I got the soundcard to work (SIIG Soundwave Pro PCI with ALS4000 chip). After spending too much time enabling and disabling kernel options and playing with BIOS settings for me to still be considered sane, it occured to me that just maybe the PCI slot was FUBAR. It isn't completely FUBAR, but switching the video and soundcards made it all work. Damn PCI Bus! Why can't we just set resoources with jumpers. If God meant for mankind to be plug-and-play, he would have given us better BIOSes ;) More advice is welcome. Soundcard not working
I just got a new soundcard, a SIIG Soundwave Pro PCI. It has what is supposed to be a supported chip, the ALS4000. I get the following errors on boot: pcm0: Avance Logic ALS4000 irq 5 at device 14.0 on pci0 pcm0: unable to allocate register space pcm0: failed to allocate resources I tried setting the bios PNP OS to off as suggested in other messages, but this kills my ATA33 card. I also set the latency timer for the card to 0x100 in the bios and still it doesn't work. The platform is 4.7-RELEASE FreeBSD 4.7-RELEASE #0: Mon Feb 10 13:39:5 I have pcm and sbc devices in the kernel, which worked with the old SB-AWE 32 (ISA) that I just took out. And that card is broken and won't record anymore, not to mention, the integrated IDE controller couldn't be turned off reliably. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. GNUstep applications
Has anyone gotten GNUstep applications (beside Windowmaker) to work? I'm trying to get GNUMail to work and it doesn't in many ways. The first way is that openapp isn't in the path, so I have to use the entire path at the command line. The second way is that GNUSTEP_SYSTEM_ROOT has to be defined in the environment or openapp doesn't find GNUMail.app. The third way is that after doing all the above implies to get GNUMail to run, it segfaults. I have rebuilt GNUstep and GNUMail twice already. There doen't seem to be any problem compiling and installing any ot this system, however, I didn't sit and watch the whole process either. So far, I've found no help for these issues on the GNUStep or GNUMail websites. To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe freebsd-questions in the body of the message
xmessage - where did it go?
I tried to upgrade to XFree86-4, only to find that it freezes my system, even though the video card is supported. So I had to go back to 3.3.6. Now, I can't seem to find xmessage (which I used for all kinds of little things on my desktop). It just isn't there. I installed from a binary package -- no xmessage. I re-installed by building from ports -- still no xmessage. I'm wondering if anything else is missing. Anyone have a clue? Alvaro Gil [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Hey guys.. Im still fighting this horrid laptop! (Gateway 2000 Solo P3C) Im stuck in 640X480 mode and would like to have my console in 800X600 mode. I have read that by having the machine boot in 600X800 yields better results when starting X. Here is my question, how do I get my console into 800X600 mode? I have tried my BIOS and there is no option for an extended text mode. DOS also boots into 640X480. If what you're talking about is more text on the screen then you're talking about vidcontrol(1). Read the manpage, load the fonts, and then experiment. Remeber that not all modes work on all hardware. When you find a setting that you like you can put something like the following in rc.conf font8x16=/usr/share/syscons/fonts/cp437-8x16.fnt font8x14=/usr/share/syscons/fonts/cp437-8x14.fnt font8x8=/usr/share/syscons/fonts/cp437-thin-8x8.fnt and allscreens_flags=-m on -b blue VGA_80x50 cyan blue or allscreens_flags=-m on VGA_80x30 This machine uses the CT 655548 chip. If anyone can any links, advice, suggestions are will be appreciated. Here are pics of the laptop. You can see the console is 640X480 and so is x. I also cant get x to display more than 4 colors. If setting a higher color depth in XF86Setup doesn't help, I'm at a loss. Jim To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe freebsd-questions in the body of the message

Can someone share their aliases or scripts with us? I used the following until the file trees became too big. I used cdrecord so you'll have to substitute. #!/bin/sh # $Id: cdar,v 1.8 2002/01/26 18:09:36 jtm Exp $ # cdar - Run a customized backup to CD-R/CD-RW media while [ $1 ]; do SW=$1 shift case $SW in -blank) echo $0: Blanking Medium cdrecord blank=fast speed=2 dev=0,0 ||\ (echo $0: error blanking medium; exit 2) ;; # -clean) # echo $0: Cleaning sources Routine # pushd # (cd /usr/src make clean) || echo $0: Could not clean sources # popd # ;; *) echo $0: Usage cdar [-blank] [-clean] exit 1 esac done DATE=`date +%Y-%m-%d` echo $DATE SIZE=`(mkisofs -graft-points -quiet -print-size -R \ -p Throckmorton P. More specifically, are there ways to fit directory trees more less almost exactly? I'm thinking of tarring and gzipping the highest directory first, then using mkisofs on that one big file (to transparently mount from cdrom later possibly). Will this work out? Thanks for your service, I'm burning for answers (lol), Once you tar or dump to a file, you can use split(1) to break the archive up into regular chunks to fit on CD-R{W}'s. However, in order to restore, you must cat them together again. cat backup.tar.gz.?? | tar -xvf - When you split, use an output name that will make sense later. I've recently experimented with using tar to write directly to the CD-R[W] and it seems to have worked. tar -b 4 -cf - /files | cdrecord - # I have default options set in the # cdrecord config file Note that this only works if the tar output is less than the capacity of the medium. The idea was to use dump's recovery for single volume failure. Maybe you just left the fifo open -- in which case a disaster on one cd would mean rewriting the whole set? When I find the time, I'll make a script. If you'll give me the hint (last para), I could even do that :-) OK, I describe what I have tested so far. Actually, it just shows that it is doable, but to make a script needs some more efforts. For example, I'd prefer to make a perl script which starts dump and burncd and moves the bytes around between the two processes, not using a fifo. Then there are issues of parameters, disk size etc. A script should be nice to handle this comfortably. Alright, first I explain how to do a multi CD dump, then how to do the restore.
