Problem installing mod_perl

2006-03-04 Thread Joachim Dagerot
When I'm trying to install p5-apache-DBI I'm getting problems with the
mod_perl extension.

I have now de-installed apache and installed apache22. Now when trying
to install mod_perl I get these error messages in the beginning. I
have cvsuped and are really stucked here. Any help is much
appreciated.

Not allowing SSH logins without a public key?

2005-09-13 Thread Joachim Dagerot

I have created a public/private key set with putty and managed to add the
public key to my .ssh directory. I have also verified that it works as desired.

I'm not too confident in configuring the SSHD so some help is much appreciated.

I would like to not allow a ssh connection to the server for users that hasn't
provided a public key.

Thanks in advance,
Joe

Securing samba?

2005-09-13 Thread Joachim Dagerot

I managed to narrow down the ssh accesss to only allow users with a RSA key.
The server is now closed to a good extent. (Thank you Alex Zbyslaw and Frank
Mueller)

However, due to some windows clients in the network we are forced to run samba.
Are there any known security problems with that? Is there a way to tunnel the
file traffic over SSH without any trouble for the users? (It's ok to install
keys etc on their machine, but they must only be forced to login with the
windows password).

I guess my question are two:

1. Is samba safe enough to run on the LAN side of a machine that are available
from the internet only on port 22 and only for users with a RSA key?

2. Is there a better file sharing system that works good for the windows users
than samba?

Again, this lists assembled knowledge is certainly on of a kind!!!

Mounting on da0s1c or da0s1d?

2005-08-14 Thread Joachim Dagerot

From my Vinum period I recall that mounting should be done on d, not c or
whatever it was. Today I'm running a hardware IDE RAID and though I read the
handbook I can't find any recommendation on where to mount.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: RAID Advice

Your RAID system is only reported as one single device to the OS. To see status
of your RAID arrays you'll need to use the RAID mgmt software that Adaptec
probably provides.

How do I check that the data is mirrored and should I be able to

Also, should I enable write cache on the host card ?

Great to know. I never managed to get the drivers to run on 5.4 (Never tried
anything advanced though, Highpoint is developing a native 5.4 driver right
 now)

Actually I use the RR1640 which has same chipset, but a different driver.

What tasks did you have to do to get the management software to run on your
machine? I get loads of missing lib files (so-files) when I start the
 srvdaemon.

Install the port misc/compat4x or the package compat4x-i386.

Great, thanks alot, works like a charm.

My /var disk has crashed, how do I proceed?

2005-08-07 Thread Joachim Dagerot

My /var disk crashed this weekend. Now when I boot the system stops direct
after the boot-loader starts processing. No errormessages no nothing.

Where can I find resources on how to solve this problem so I can boot my system
again? It's not extremely important for me to keep the system, but I have a
RAID10 and a RAID5 system that I absolutely must be able to get data from.

Kind regards,

2005-08-07 Thread Joachim Dagerot

My /var disk crashed this weekend. Now when I boot the system stops direct

You should be able to boot into single user mode. From there you should be
able to do whatever you need in order to fix the problem.

If you can't boot to single user mode, then you've got more problems than
just your /var filesystem.

Thanks for your help.

My system seems to stop right after the text
Loading /boot/defaults/loader.conf. The /var disk is physically injured
(strange quirks, the normal sound of a broken HD). I have disconnected it and
have also disconnected the RocketRAID454 card with all it's harddisks.
Remaining harddisk is the system disk which I think works as desired.

What is the first thing the loade is doing?

RocketRaid 454 in FreeBSD 5.4?

My freeBSD 5.3 system supports HighPoint RocketRaid 454 flawless, using

I can't find support for the RocketRaid 454 in the hardware notes for freeBSD

Yes, but it's not identified as one single device. Only as eight individual

Moving a directory hierarchy - best practice?

2005-03-04 Thread Joachim Dagerot

I have spent 20 minutes or so googling around to find the best way to _move_ a
complete directory hierarchy. But must admitt that I haven't foundmany good
answers.

The best suggestion was from
http://badgertronics.com/knowledge/one.adp?parent=25:

To move /tmp/blarg to /var:
% cd /tmp
% tar cvf - blarg | (cd /var; tar xf -)

I bet there must be atleast one utils like a binary named mvdir or similar
that simply taked two directory names as argument. But I can't find any.

How do you guys move around your directory structures from prompt?

Thanks for your suggestion.

Unfortunately your commands will not affect the root folder of the hierarchy. I
must create a directory in the destination path with the same name of the
folder where my data is in. example:

/home/user/level1/l2/l3/l4

I would like to move level1 to a new location:

mvdir /home/user/level1 /root/

That would be awsome!

Bash script programming. Sending commands to a 'screen' session

2005-02-20 Thread Joachim Dagerot

I just accidentily wiped one of my script folders. Really no big deal, I'm not
doing multiK scripts. But I had one nice script laying around. It created an
additional window in a named screen session and started a bittorrentheadless
session within.

I do remember that it took me some days to solve this last time, and I have
only been sitting three hours so far. (No, I don't recall the exact syntax).

I'm struggeling with this script now:

#!/bin/bash
echo Starting download: $1
screen -r p2pA -X screen nice -n 20
/usr/local/BitTorrent-3.4.2/btdownloadheadless.py --max_uploads 4 \$1\

But it just don't do anything useful.

If I run that line from prompt, replacing $1 with a filename, then it works.
It's surely something to do with citationmarks around arguments etc. but I just
don't see it.

 1. Is there a way to get a serial console after the installation is done?
 How? (Link?)

Just add the line console=comconsole in /boot/loader.conf and you have your
1st sio as console with 9600boud.
If you need loader interactivity, instead create the file /boot.config with
the two characters -h in the first line, then you don't need to set the
console in loader.conf.
If you want to have a different console speed see the sysctl
machdep.conspeed. You can set that via sysctl.conf.
But if you also want a different port or serial control before login see the
following options in /etc/make.conf:
BOOT_COMCONSOLE_PORT=   0x2F8 # Use sio1 (com2)
BOOT_COMCONSOLE_SPEED=  115200

You have to rebuild your kernel and the loader. For the latter go
to /usr/src/sys/boot/i386 and 'make clean' 'make depend' 'make install'

If you want to login in multiuser mode edit /etc/ttys and make sure you have a
line like that:
ttyd0 /usr/libexec/getty std.115200 cons25 on secure

Ports don't go by releases like you are trying to do. If you look at
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/
You will see that nothing before 5.2 is there now. The current set of
packages, which is what you are loading, would be located in
packages-5-stable.

Are you really still using 5.1? That was not considered a production
release. The current version is 5.3 and was the first to be given the
name of 5-stable.

Thanks for your answer. I managed to install the ports distribution by the help
of another mail. But yes I think I am using the 5.1 release. Don't ask me how
or why. I have been running cvsup for all the ports now and then for a couple
of years and everytime there's a lot of changes coming in.

I am just a unix guy that likes my shell. I don't know and don't have too much
interest in following the development paths and all the various tags. When I
installed my 5.1 everyone said I should go for 4x but I didn't and it has never
failed me.

Now when you're pointing out that I run such an old version I googled a bit to
find how to upgrade but to be honest, I still really don't get it, but I'll
post a new mail about that.

Good luck. Speech to text is very difficult, AFAIK nothing works well
in the open source world. IBM's Via Voice runs on linux, if you can
find it...

You can try /usr/ports/audio/sphinx but it is an early release system.
See the description of that for more info.

I suspect this is a case of if you can get it working tell everyone
else how, rather than it works great already. I could be wrong
though.

Actually, it's not a complete speak-2-text solution I'm aiming for, just being
able to shout NEXT and it will perform some action. There will be 3 or four
of those commands. Not more. I don't even know what a microphone device would
be named and how to access it.

Prope or probing aound card?

2005-02-02 Thread Joachim Dagerot

I have a dell latitude cp[somrthing] 550 or 500. (laptop)

It has a sound device ofcourse, but I can't figure out how to find out which
module to load. Some OS has a probe function, but I can't find that in my 5.3
install.

So I started trying out kldload from the first in the locate snd_ result.

That wasn't too smart, I have rebooted a few times now.

Is the a better way to do this?

Image/Graphic viewer software - need suggestion

2005-01-30 Thread Joachim Dagerot

This is not a very freeBSD oriented question, but because I am running it on a
freeBSD system I take a shot.

I have searched the net for a few days now to find a graphic/image viewer with
these features:

1. Been able to show jpg and png files
2. Been able to resize the image to current window size
3. Been able to do a slide show with all images in a folder
4. Has adjustable time between each image is shown in slideshow mode.
5. Take network commands of some kind, preferrable HTTP but anyway to control
the viewer from a non graphic environment is needed.

1-4 can ba handled by almost all viewers I've found, but the fifth demand seems
completely unimplemented.

The software will be running on an digital frame I build, it has a network
connection and auto starts X and a viewer. I want to control the viewer from
another workstation because there's no such thing as a keyboard on my
DigiFrame. (http://sherlock.space2u.com/digiframe1/)

Control local X from ssh?

2005-01-30 Thread Joachim Dagerot

I'm not very knowledgeable in the areas of X, X servers and clients.

I have a setup like this:

1. FreeBSD server
2. FreeBSD Workstation with only monitor, not keyboard, no mouse
3. Windows XP Complete workstation with an X-win32

On workstation 2 I'm running X and an auto started image viewer that shows a
slideshow.
Today when I want to show another set of images I'll have to add/remove images
from a designated folder and then restart the whole machine. Everything done
via SSH to the client.

I would prefer being able to just shutdown/start up the image viewer software
in that particular X session.

I installed VNC server on the client, but it only served me with yet another X
session, not the particular sceen shown on the monitor.

I certainly could need some help here.

TV-Card: Hauppauge WINTV PVR USB2

2005-01-30 Thread Joachim Dagerot

I have the device mentioned in the subject. I also have a nice working freeBSD
5.1 server without any graphics whatsoever. It's running different internet
communications and also works as a file server. I have never done anything
actively to support USB on it.

My question is now: How difficult would it be, i even possible, to get my TV
card set up so it can record television shows?

Any links, suggestions and help is appreciated.

Image viewer/Slideshow solution.

2005-01-25 Thread Joachim Dagerot

I'm running freeBSD on a laptop. The laptop is about to become a striped
view-image-only box, ie a Digital Frame.

I have my pictures organised with Adobe Photoshop album, and I would like to
keep it that way, so now I need to either:

a) Find a freeBSD image software that understands the Adobe Photoshop Album
database format.
b) automatically export on set of paths from the Adobe Photoshop Album
database.

I also need to find picture viewer / slideshow that can take command line
argument with either a textfile containing image paths, or a folder to show
images from.

It would also be VERY cool if I can command next and prev image via the
network. I have my RC reciever on another box so this new Digital Frame will
have no other inputs than the power and the network.

So:

1. Is anyone aware of a freeBSD product that understands Adobe Photoshop album?
2. Can someone recommend an image viewer software that has rather advanced
system-call availabilty, like the mplayer for instance.

Thanks in advance.

I'm doing that now. I also found out that I cant mount into a directory, only

However, I have a samba share on the same server, it's sharing exactly the

to go via SAMBA then, compared to share everything?

Are there any other ways to solve this?

Tiny freeBSD?

I have a spare Dell Lattitude CPx which I will re-build into a digital frame.

I therfor need either an installation on a 1GB sandisk or a bootable CD. I
would prefer the CD solution

Now it comes to hardware. I have not political thoughts whatsoever o what OS
people uses. I run a freeBSD server and plenty of workstations home.

My questions which I hope someone can answers are:

1. Is there a small plug'n'play freBSD solution that can run from a CD and map
samba-drivers (Or NFS actually)?

2. If not, what would you recommend starting with? Linux, freeBSD, windows?

3. This seams not like a very unique thing to do, has anyone seen a complete
distr of some kind that solves it?

can'texec getty'/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm for port /dev/tty8: no such file or directory

2004-09-20 Thread Joachim Dagerot
I have had this error message for quite some time now. It's not
bothering me too much because it's mainly published in the logs and on

system.

But now during this weekends maintainance I have been working from
console and get the message:

can't exec getty '/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm for port /dev/tty8: no such

every 30 second or so, incredibly irritating when writing a longer

I searched the archive but only found a solution telling that the /usr
was improperly mounted, which in no way is the case.

Any other ideas?

2004-09-20 Thread Joachim Dagerot
 | In any event, I can tell you the first thing to do is dd the
partition
 | into a file so that you can make backups before you start
attempting
 | to undelete. i.e. dd if=/dev/ad??? of=/some/part/diskimage, then
 | cp diskimage workingimage.
 |
 | Then you can 3 things:
 | 1) Start using the computer again if you like
 | 2) Work on workingimage in an attempt to restore the lost file
 | 3) Feel confident that if you screw up something on workingimage,
 |you can just copy diskimage again and give it another go.

I'm just running TCT after a suggestion from another writer on this
eminent list. For the record this url may help other people that
searches in the archives for recover deleted file or undelete
file: http://www.fish.com/tct/help-recovering-file I don't have any
result yet though.

 | Why not a filesystem that takes care of that for me?
 |
 | Why not a filesystem that keeps itself defragmented, instead of
 | requiring you to do it every so often?

I am in the strong believe that UFS2 is self-defragmenting, atleast I
don't have any problems with fragmentation on my freeBSD iron, as
opposite to our windows machines then. Point taken though, but it
would be nice to have the ultimate filesystem with both some built in
user tolerance AND security AND de-fragmentation logic AND smart
allocation AND etc etc.

 | Why do I always
 | need to do everything by myself, why can't a computer year 2004
be
 | more fault tolerant, my car is, and so is my CD and my stove.
 |
 | How much did you pay for your computer? I think this goes back to
 | a common misconception that the general public has (which I blame
on
 | MS and Apple) There is no computer available today that is smarter
 | than a human, even the stupidest human is smarter than the smartest
 | computer. If you expect the computer to know better than you what
 | data is good and what isn't, you're about to be repeatedly
 | disappointed.

Yes, you are right, and especially if I choose to run from command
line there is no security net between my stupidity and the computers
logic. I guess all user tolerant tools must be but between me and the
filesystem, atleast that's what's done on Windows. (There's no
trashcan in dos ie).

 | Besides, computers are not remotely like your CD, stove or car.
For
 | example, the fault tolerant systems in your car never have to
wonder
 | if you're doing something you shouldn't or not.
 |
 | Your car never has to determine if you really want to hit the
brakes
 | or not. If cars were fault-tolerant on the level that you are
expecting
 | your computer to be, we'd have few or no accidents. I'm really in
a
 | state of mystery as to what kind of car you have that has fault
 | tolerance such that it protects you from human error! I'd like one
 | that doesn't let me pull out in front of other people even if I
can't
 | seem them (VERY helpful in Western PA!)

Well, today when I panic brake my car helps me not to lock the wheels,
to increase the retardation efficence. There are cars that change the
power balance between the left and right rear wheels during heavy
movements from side to side, to help the driver from forcing the car
off the road. So, yes, the cars today certainly helps a bad driver to
some extent. (Sorry for this long text, I'm not too good on
mechanichal terms in english:)

 | | It's rather interesting to note that the Windows world focuses

 | |
 | | Windows - Oops, I screwed up, let me publish the crazy things
I

 | | Unix - I'm going to do this important stuff. Before I start,
I'm
 | | going to assume that the fact that I'm human means there's a
good
 | | chance that I'll make mistakes and corrupt or lose things,
 | | so I'll take steps from the get-go to make it easy to
backtrack
 | | when that happens.
 |
 | I think your shown attitude is just what makes alternate OS to
 | Microsoft so hard to reach for common users. I believe in having
 | technology that aids me in my every day work so I can focus on
less
 | trivial things than data recovery.
 |
 | Like CVS and backups?

Yes, that would be neat if it was something I could control/setup in
the sysinstall-label, like (CVS this volume).
CVS would ofcourse be crap for most of the time because of the
CVS-folders it trashes my nice directory structure with, but an
automatic dump-restore would be nice.

 | Whereas this way of replying reads like conversation; moreover,
 | Mail.app will highlight lines with indent marking and color so I
can

 |
 | Or do

 |
 | Top posting? Or inline posting? I inline because it's more like a

being

 | technology field that should be AVOIDED.
 |
 | You should get a new one then.
 |
 | New what? What is being referred to if the message as a whole is

Invalid RealAudio(RM)files after an mplayer -dumpstream session

2004-06-30 Thread Joachim Dagerot
Is there a fixup tool or something faulty rm files?

I earlier got the response that mplayer -dumpstream... can dump a
RealAudio file to disk and I tried it with very good result.

I then created a batch to download a whole lot of RM streams to disk
which took some days ofcourse.

But today when I wanted to transform the streams to PCM I realise that
the dumped streams must be errenous in som way, I can't even play the
streams as they are, though mplayer does recognise them.

An example stream could be
rtsp://lyssna.sr.se/P1/Sommar/Sommar-040616.rm;

which I dumped using
mplayer -dumpstream -dumpfile sommar040616.rm

Process hangs in DL state, can't be killed - can't shutdown -p (tccat)

2004-06-09 Thread Joachim Dagerot
I used DVD::RIP to rip one of my DVD's when it suddenly stopped
responding (during rip phase).

I found that tccat was the offending task and tried to kill it with no
luck.

After a couple of hours reading I find my self standing with a process
in lockstate that doesn't listening to signals (no kill-9 is working).

ps -aux gives:

PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TT STAT STARTED TIME COMMAND
2188 0.0 0.4 6352 2272 p0 DL 12:08PM 0:02.01 tccat -t dvd -T
3,-1,1 -i /cdrom

I tried shutdown -r now and it sent the *** FINAL SHUTDWON message,
but nothing else is happening.

To be honest, I have actually got my rock-steady, super-duper, awsome
freeBSD system to hang. That's cool in some way (took 2,5 years
though).

The not so cool thing is that my hardware RAID5 system doesn't like
too much to be powered down in opposite to system down. So it would be
very very nice if someone could hint me in any steps that I can try to
get rid of the lock.

( I did a powerdown earlier before I was so enlighted as I am now and
it gave me some headache carrying the 22Kg server to a monitor and
running fsck in init 3 mode on a 800GB file system Don't want to
go there again)

Btw, it's the DVD-rom device that's errenous.

Odd characters in filename

2004-06-04 Thread Joachim Dagerot
I unpacked a rar file and find myself standing with a lot of files
with strange characters like accents etc.

When I do tab for completion the characters 'escapes' to for example

I tried to write a small rename method in java but neither the
File.list() or by providing the filename in args[0] makes java
understand these odd characters.

How can I rename these files in a not too manual way?

Re: disk recovery

2004-05-24 Thread Joachim Dagerot
I used to think just like you. I thought I found the perfect balance
between being on a budget and still having some kind of data security
by using the Vinum software raid.

So I stored the first 10 hours of video and 4k of still shots of my
newly borned first child on the raid, and everything went well until
one day when the kid crawled upfront the server and started to switch
on switch of with a rate only a kid can achieve.

One disk broke and I never managed to get it up again. So all memories
from my sons first year where lost.

Also I got no support whatsoever from this list when I asked for help
to replace and recover the RAID system, so I was quite alone with
vinum at that point...

Today I have a hardware raid with a four disks volume and a fifth disk
as spare. Some of the directories are each night copied to another
machine for backup. Now and then (unfortunately mostly 'then') I burn
newly taken pictures and films to DVD and put them in a box on my
office (just in case of fire back home).

If you have 400Gb of data I assume it's not material produced by
yourself but perhaps downloaded films, music etc. If your'e on a
budget, don't backup that. But do backup everything you've created
yourself.

So, don't repeat my misstake!

dump to a samba mounted FAT32 disk can't handle bigfiles?

2004-05-24 Thread Joachim Dagerot
I'm dump-ing to a samba mounted xp machine, it has an external HD
connected through FW and the HD is about 300GB.

When I try to dump anything larger than 4GB dump gives me a write
error.

I assume this is the big-file limitation in the foreign OS, but I
guess this can be solved by breaking up the dump file in mutiple
volumes.

The man page for dump states this:

[]
 -B records
The number of kilobytes per output volume, except that if it is not an
integer multiple of the output block size, the command uses the next
smaller such multiple. This option overrides the calculation of tape
size based on length and density.
[]

So I thougth this line should create a bunch of 35mb files. But it did
not. Any thouts on this?

Changing /tmplocation?

2004-05-16 Thread Joachim Dagerot
I have, for some reason, a special partition that mounts to /tmp.
Unfortunately this partition is very small, so not seldom do I get
problems when trying to extract files etc.

My idea is to have /tmp as a normal directory right under /, if that's
a bad idea I have a few other disks/volumes where it can reside.

My question is: how do I chaneg the /tmp location, when in INIT 5 I'm
not allowed, and since this is a server I don't have a keyboard nor a
monitor. So I must have it done through telnet (SSH). Is it possible,
and what steps must I take?

Dummynet, routing and firewalls - crazy idea

2004-05-11 Thread Joachim Dagerot
Problem: When downloading huge files from the server we can't use the
client webbrowser.

Setup: One firewall/DHCP/Gateway which all clients and the server
routes through. The clients goes via no router when connecting to the
server. The server is equipped with double NIC, however only one is
used. The firewall is a hardware box meaning no software can be
altered.

Crazy idea: I have an idea about routing traffic through the server
and then to the firewall. This would make it possible for the server
to see that there's traffic on port 80 which should be prioritized
over traffic on port 21, this part shouldn't be too hard I guess -
lots of how-tos on the net for this.

BUT, I would like the clients to go directly to the firewall without
passing the server if they want to, this will mostly be the case when
the server is down for maintenance or similar.

This must mean that the servers both NICs actually must be on the same
network, is that possible at all and how do I setup such an
environment?

It's 10:45pm and this idea just came out of my tired brain, if someone
can give a better solution to the problem I would be very glad.

p2p core applications

2004-04-12 Thread Joachim Dagerot
The is a p2p application that runs on the freeBSD server and it's

I like the idea of having a core applications separated from the GUI
alot, but don't fancy mlDonkey too much. So my question is:

Are there any more p2p applications out there, that doesn't require
the GUI to be run on the same machine?

Incremental backup solution. was: What logs etc do I need tocheckfrequently?

2003-12-29 Thread Joachim Dagerot
This solution sounds nice, I can even imagine setting up an additional
machine (on the same location though) to have a somewhat galvanic
isolation between the disks. Only fire, earthquake and a neutronbomb
would affect such a backup solution.

However, I could use a push in the right direction when it comes to
how to configure and what software to use for achieving the
incremental backup tasks.

Could you hint me in how your system is doing this in a more detailed
way?

Cheers,
Joachim

Re: Incremental backup solution. was: What logs etc do I need tocheckfrequently?

2003-12-29 Thread Joachim Dagerot
 | Before certain events in New York, we used to talk about
hypothetical
 | jumbo jets when considering our disaster plans. Secure off-site
 | backups are a necessity. Take care thought that the off-site
location
 | really is secure. I did hear that some of the businesses in the
World
 | Trade Center had considered the other tower as a suitable
location
 | for their off-site backups.

I know a company whom's(?) office burned down to the ground. They
where saved by the secretary who forgot to put the backup-tape in the
safety box, instead she brought it in her handbag.

How can I automatically mount a windows-xp share from a freeBSD box using windows username andpassword?

2003-12-29 Thread Joachim Dagerot
I can't get smb_mount and smbutil login to work as I would like to.

I know this question has been touched earlier this year, but no answer
came up at that point. So basically, has anyone been able to mount a
windows share from a script in freeBSD? If yes, how did you do?

Joachim

 |

My system keeps telling me that theres no such entry. However I found
an example under /usr/share/examples/smbfs nad copied/renamed it to
/root/

I edited the file and changed all values to reflect my system. Then I
tried
mount_smbfs //[EMAIL PROTECTED]/sharename /mountpoint

and still it asks for a password.

Any advice is welcome.

rdiff-backup and windows fileshare

2003-12-29 Thread Joachim Dagerot
I'm probably stupid or so, but I continue getting Errno 2: no such
file or directory when I'm trying to run rdiff-backup on a freeBSD
directory but saving it to a mounted windows share. Yes, I am using
the --windows-mode option. I have a feeling that it's something with
the zero-length semaphore files. But it's just a feeling.

For a while I thought it was the network that was too slow, but I
can't even copy an existing backup to the windows share.

So my backup solution is to do a rdiff-backup to another hard drive
and then do a tar:ing it and saving it to the windows machine.

I don't even know if the rdiff-backup directory would be intact after
I untar it if something is crashing.

So, what am I asking?

Well, first:

Is it possible at all to have rdiff-backup saving to a mounted windows
share (without using cygwin)?

Is there any other backup programs that would support this?

Tanks,

Excuse my ignorance and the fact that I haven't read all there is

I realise you are right. The thing is that this is a home system and I
have (had!) around 230 GB of data that was non-replicable. I am not
aware of a deasent backup system that can handle that amount of data.
I will post another question about this later on.

Thanks for your answers!

What logs etc do I need to checkfrequently?

2003-12-27 Thread Joachim Dagerot
As you with good memories know, I lost 3000 pictures of my first sons
first year this month. I did have a RAID-5 system with fresh disks,
however, shit happens and I have a feeling that this could have been
avoided if I read my log files better.

So basically,

a) I get a mail each time my a cron-event fires, this happens every 30
min so the mailbox are quite loaded, not very funny going through.

b) The file messages contained information that my raid-system was
about to blow, I didn't see this because I never read that file. Also
it appears to only log information after a reboot.
The vinum history file seems to only hold information about the vinum
setup, not the health of the volumes.

Questions:

a1) Is it possible to only get a mail with critical information, where
and what do I need to do to achieve this?

b1) Where will information about ongoing disk-problems appear? How can
I see that there is a flaky disk in a non-rebooted system?

In addition to the questions above, is there something else I need to
tune/install/setup/configurare to get a very reliable system that
report critical data to me but where non-critical data is filtered
out?

Thank in advance, my FreeBSD setup is getting more and more mature
now, only thanks to this list.

Joachim

Re: Converting XSL-FO toPDF?

2003-12-21 Thread Joachim Dagerot
Have you tried the FOP java package from Apache?

A utility to verify if an harddisk isworking?

2003-12-20 Thread Joachim Dagerot
I have a few harddisks, they sit in a vinum RAID-5 array, and I have
huge trouble on some of them. Due to lack of vinum support I started
to fipple around myself, ending up in a situation where I would like
to verify each harddisk to see if it's working.

Is there such a utility available?

Vinum problem: Incompatible sector sizes

2003-12-18 Thread Joachim Dagerot
I have mailed about this problem a few times now, and I have got
responses from Greg very quick where he asks for more information, but
I never get any replies on my replies. This makes me worried that I'm
doing something wrong or that I appear to be rude, something I
certainly don't want to be, instead I'm very very grateful for all the
work he and all other volnteers do for this great community.

Well, here is all answers on the standard vinum-error report form:

(I'm forced to do my mails through a web-interface so the formatting
is a bit out of my control. This mail can also be found here:
http://sherlock.space2u.com/sweclockers/vinumproblem.txt)

  What problems are you having?
One of my drives was flagged down. I replaced it and can't get the
plex to synk. It says: vinum: incompatible sector sizes. raid.p0.s2
has 0 bytes, raid.p0 has 512 bytes. Ignored.
As I wrote in an earlier message I have some non-backed-up pictures
from my sons first year on this RAID, so I'm very very interested to
get it up running.

Vinum questionIncompatiblesectorsizes

2003-12-15 Thread Joachim Dagerot
I have a three disk IDE RAID-5 system using vinum. I do not have the
root or the system disks there, but I do (did) have the /HOME on the
RAID.

Now one disk has broken down and I'm trying to replace it. However
there is some problem when I'm booting: init: /bin/sh on /etc/rc
terminated abnormally, going to single user mode I'm not really sure
what this single user mode is, but I can't write to the /tmp/ disk for
some reason. Is this normal behaviour?

During boot vinum reports the following:

###
vinum: loaded
vinum: reading configuration from /dev/ad1s1e
vinum: updating configuration from /dev/ad4s1e
vinum: incompatible sector sizes. raid.p0.s2 has 0 bytes, raid.p0 has
512 bytes. Ignored.
###

The broken disk is /dev/ad5 and it's not completely replaced yet. I do
have a bad feeling that both ad5 AND ad4 is broken, but I certainly
hope this isn't the case. I'm using RAID instead of a backup system.

All help here is much appreciated, I have pictures from my sons first
year on this RAID volume...

Single user mode, non writeable /tmp

2003-12-15 Thread Joachim Dagerot
I just posted a problem regarding vinum where this question was
hidden:

My system starts with an error:

init: /bin/sh on /etc/rc terminated abnormally, going to single user
mode

This is because a disk has broken down. But my question is what tasks
do I need to take to be able to run the system. The crashed disk
contained /home and /usr.

I can't even edit the fstab because the /tmp disk is not writeable.

How to find out which drive isdown?

2003-12-14 Thread Joachim Dagerot
I'm not sure if I'm brave or just stupid, but I have running my
complex freeBSD for several years now, every week something is tuned,
installed or tweaked, however, I'm not very good on computers! :-\ My
problem:

I have seven disks in my cabinett, three of them builds a vinum RAID-5
plex.

One of the disks in the RAID is down according to vinum list.

I could use some honts on how to determine which physical disk is
named what in my system, is there a good path to follow by disconnect
one, write down whats left and then re-connect it and connect another
one?

WHich command is best to use to get a list of all connected disks? I
use ls /dev/ by now.

Also if there is something else I should consider in this case, please
don't hesitate to correct and guide me.

Thanks in advance,

Joachim

Need route add default 192.xxx after every reboot

2003-08-17 Thread Joachim Dagerot
I need to add a default route everytime I reboot.

Where are these settings stored, what can I do to get the default route
added automatically at a boot?

kernel: table is full

2003-08-16 Thread Joachim Dagerot
My server stopped responding on web and ssh today.

I couldn't even login at the console, got an error stating something
about a missing *.so file in /usr/..somewhere

I ctrl-alt-del restarted and now everything is up again.

in /var/log I can read similar lines:

[date-time] kernel: table is full
[date-time] last message repeated 17371 times
[date-time] last message repeated 97223 times

I thought I was running out of disk, but a df states differently
But when I do a df everything looks good.

Any clue what this is about?

[Fwd: Re: kernel: table is full]

2003-08-16 Thread Joachim Dagerot
You need to increase the number of free file handles

Or figure out what is using so many of them (e.g. fstat, etc).

Because of the time between the problem occurs it's not a valid way to
go by just using fstat.

I increased the number of file handles now, is there some
surveillance(sp?) system that's easy to setup and that can help me find
out what's happening. I think I had the same problem a few weeks ago
aswell, but I thought the computer schack got overheated which probably
was wrong.

MDBTools port doesn't include libmdbodbc for ODBC connections

2003-07-26 Thread Joachim Dagerot
All references on how to connect via a JDBC-ODBC bridge is pointing to
the MDB Tools suite in general and the ODBC driver in particular.

But when I installed the MDB Tools from the port-system I found, a but
surprised, that the ODBC driver isn't there, alla the other tools and
drivers are there, and my port-tree was upgraded just a few weeks ago.

Any light on this dilema would be appreciated.

TV-Out turns off like some kind of power-save feature

2003-07-26 Thread Joachim Dagerot
My NVIDIA Geforce2 card works great with the nVIDIA beta driver. I only
use the tv-out feature and everything is fine except the fact that after
10 minutes the screen is blank, no signal from the card. The tv-signal
returns when I press 'any-key' on the keyboard (which isn't very
convenient when the computer is located far away from the tv-set)

This looks like some kind of power-save feature, but I can't fifure out
if it's something in the freeBSD native or if it's the XFree86 or the
nVidia that needs configuration.

Any help is much appreciated

Re: Using spamprobe on a FreeBSD System

2003-07-21 Thread Joachim Dagerot
Try out SpamAssasin, it works fairly good. Atleast more than 95 out of
100 spam mails are killed.

I presently use junkfilter which is excellent as far as it
goes, but the spam urchins can beat junkfilter to pieces with nothing
more than html and base64 and the garbage comes right on in anyway.
Thanks for any and all useful suggestions. I am not locked in to any
particular software package or solution as long as I can stay ahead of
the unwashed rabble on the information highway.:-)

Error installing Eclipse 2.1.1 port

2003-07-16 Thread Joachim Dagerot
I get several errors when I'm trying to install the Eclipse 2.1.1 port
but before I'm trying to dump the errorlog I just wanted to see if
anyone has managed to install this port, or if there's any known bugs.

Expanding a Vinum RAID-5 array

2003-07-12 Thread Joachim Dagerot
Is it possible to just 'plug-in' another disk to a vinum RAID-5 array
and let vinum start building a new index based on the new volume-size?

All this without any data-loss?
