HP proliant dl385 startx freezes machine
I have a Proliant 385 dl with a Ati Rage XL graphics card ( which should correspond with the Mach64 driver) I have installed xorg as I have done a zillion times, and used Xorg -configure to set it all up. I have then edited the .conf file as usual, accordingly to the handbook. I have added LXFE in the same manner as on my main computer, and made a .xinitrc with startlxde When i call upon startx as my own user the server freezes and xorg does not start. If doing it by SSH the pipe sooner or later breaks, and I can log back in. When I consult /var/log/Xorg.X.log I get the follwing error listed : Fatal server error: xf86OpenConsole: VT_SETMODE VT_PROCESS failed I have googled quite a lot but cannot find anything help me get Xorg up and running. Anyone out there with any hints ? Ports: Apache openoffice build eats all /usr and fails
Rebuilding and upgrading to apache openoffice on my main desktop fails because the procedure consumes all my 17 gbs of available /usr space, which still is not enough apparently. The build routine says 11gb is more than enough. Libreoffice will not build on this machine for some reason so at this point that is not an alternative. Anyone here have ideas what is wrong ( some nob must be turned the wrong way ;) ) Blessed be... Re: Off topic: NetBSD or OpenBSD for Alpha server ?
The idea of installing FreeBSD 6.4 and experiment with upgrading to7.x and above appeals to quite a lot. If anyone have tried this I`d like to know if it is doable. I guess I`ll pick up the server one of the coming days. The tip on using OpenVMS is okay, I googled it. But this seems to be a commercial OS, and I have no money to spend on it, and I get the server for free to play with. So BSD will be fine. I`ll try FreeBSD first, and OpenBSD next I think if the experience of FreeBSD 6.4 and above is not totally pleasant... problem upgrading ports : something wrong with cups ?
Whenever I run portmaster -a it fails with several ports : The message I get is that someway cups interferes and the here it is : pkg_info: package cups-base-1.3.10_2 has no origin recorded If I use portmaster on single ports those who do not have any printing ability ( no cups dependancy I guess ? ) will function as expected, but not scribus etc. If I try to delete, reinstall or install cups I get the same message quickly and the process is halted with error code 1 as usual.. Is there anyone who can see what I have done wrong on the system ? cups no origin problem SOLVED :)
None of Antons solutions worked. I read the UPDATING file and didn`t get any smarter. After plodding through several older discussions on similar subjects I found this command given by Paul Chvostek may 2008 on the mail-archive.com : make all install clean FORCE_PKG_REGISTER=1 I executed it in the cups-base path in ports and voilathe shite reinstalled nicely. The first 2 issues have covered topics from FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD and actually a short one on MAC. In addition PCBSD is quite heavily featured. As far as I know this leaves only Dragonfly and DesktopBSD out for now in addition to Monowall, FreeNAS and FreeSBIE and others I do not know. The whole installation took a week or so ;) Works like a charm, except firefox is heavy load for this ancient piece of machinery. Also use xfce compiled from source on old 350 - 450mhz machines nicely. I usually use cdrom boot and then ftp install. On machines with no cd, or no working rom drives I use floppy boot versions of FreeBSD and then ftp the rest of the install. When wanting to use cdrom boot where I have no floppy, or bios doesn`t support cdrom boot (ie no bios upgrade to fix it either) I use a floppy tool called smart boot manager that when booted enables me to continue on most other media of my desire.( gives a new boot menu with among others cdrom driver loaded) I suggest this option for your convenience..
