This is everyone's fault but yours. If you'd been in the loop from the start, this never would have happened. My goodness, why didn't we consult you earlier ... you obviously have all the answers. Excuse me? Now this is clearly flame baiting. This is free software man, if you don't like it, fix it yourself. What is the procedure to fix a logo? A logo doesn't work the same as a piece of source code, which is why commiters shouldn't have been the only people with an opinion that counts. It's the users that use the software. We're an essential part of the community, we buy cd's, show our friends, retire windows boxes here and there. The logo is our badge, and anyone that's ever been to a convention knows that. If you can't fix it, _ask_ someone else, or put up some cash to pay someone who can. I can't help but think that cash has little to do with this. I'm sure between us we could raise a few thousand dollars for someone to design a proper logo, but i'm sure it's not as simple as that. But quit whining. I'm not whining, I'm trying to understand. You are a Troll. If you weren't a Troll, you'd have taken this to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] instead of staying on this list. I'm not a troll. It seems like a rather convenient way to silence someone to me. Is my question advocacy related? I don't think so. It has a much wider scope than that. Go use Microsoft, they pay professional graphic artists big bucks to design their logos and their marketing materials, and you fund that with your Windows license fees. How is that related or helpful? Or, _contribute_ something back to the wonderful free software community other than a lengthy email thread of whining. I'm trying to, but it has to start somewhere. I'm trying to understand how the logo was chosen, and why. It would seem to have far greater ramifications than you think. kep ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Hi, thanks for the pointer.. I think a contest was potentially a good idea, but my suspicion is that the entries were rather poor, and the current logo was simply the best of a bad bunch? It seems wierd that only commiters were given a vote - while I respect their technical judement without quarrel, geeks don't seem to have the same grasp on aesethetics as a design agency. Take a look at the netbsd logo if you want to see how it's done. It means something. It's neat. It represents the project. What we (the users) seem to have ended up with is a fussy and unelegent logo that has nothing to do with anythin, save for a pair of post-modern ice cream cones harking back to beastie. The simple fact is, when you look at the new logo it only makes sense if you previously understand what it represents. The effect is that it represents nothing in particular, which is why it fails so fantasically. What are the key values of FreeBSD? I'd guess something like Freedom, Stability, Robustness, quality. Those values are not communicated in the new logo, and I think that's something that somebody with freebsd.org in their email address should seriously address. kep ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

So if this is the wrong list (which was a concern I mentioned in the first line of my original post) where is the right list? I'm not saying save beasite, although I personally think he's awesome. New freebsd logo on freebsd.org
Hi, I guess this is the wrong list, but I just looked at freebsd.org and saw the new logo. I really think it looks terrible. Everyone that I've spoken to agrees. It looks like some kind of sextoy/spacehopper, and not becomming to the enterprise os we know and love. Maybe it was the best from the competition you had, but I don't think it's good enough. Is there somewhere this was discussed? The new logo already looks last year. Is there a plan to redesign it each year as design trends come and go? If you compare it to the debian, IBM, BMW, greenpeace, or google logos, the design relates in some way to the subject. I don't see that happening here. Sorry if this is too late, or an unpopular opinion, or in the wrong place, but I just wondered if anyone thinks the new logo is good, and how long it's expected to last. It'll certainly run your screen saver :-) Runs cool too. that's really promising, as soon as i get a new mobo i'll try it out. i've never used x with dvi before. i'm guessing that with the nvidia drivers on i386 dual-head should work properly on both screens? whenever i buy new hardware i often find that it doesn't work like i imagined, and i can imagine something silly like direct rendering only working on one screen, or not being able to get both screens working over dvi at the same time, or that sort of sillyness. still, there's a fine line between questions and therapy ;) thanks for your help. kep ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
which graphics card?
hi, i'm about to build a new system and obviously it would be nice if everything worked nicely. my plan is to one of the asus A8V motherboards, but i've just spent a while reading nvidia forums and it seems there aren't any amd64 drivers for freebsd, or even any plans to release them. i need to have direct rendering and dual head dvi. in 2006, decent 3d performance doesn't seem unreasonable, even if it is just to run a swanky screen saver. i've got an xfx geforce 6800GT sitting around here that i'd like to use, but it seems this is currently impossible on amd64. it seems like a huge waste to run the i386 version on an amd64 machine, but can anyone comment on the performance difference? my hope is to build a freebsd based video editing workstation using kino and friends. if nvidia aren't supporting freebsd on amd64, are there any other options? any help gratefully recieved. cheers, ke ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
palm tungsten t3 (m550) on freebsd 6 over usb
hiya, i've been trying unsucessfully to get my palm t3 to work with freebsd using either coldsync or pilot-link. it seems to be detected ok in dmesg, and usbdevs -v: ucom0: Palm, Inc. Palm Handheld, rev 1.00/1.00, addr 2 ucom0: at uhub1 port 1 (addr 2) disconnected Controller /dev/usb1: addr 1: full speed, self powered, config 1, UHCI root hub(0x), Intel(0x), rev 1.00 port 1 addr 2: full speed, self powered, config 1, Palm Handheld(0x0060), Palm, Inc.(0x0830), rev 1.00 port 2 powered i've got ucom compiled into my kernel and uvisor loaded as a module. i'm just generally confused - what port should i be using? /dev/usb1, /dev/ucom0, /dev/cuad1 and everything i try doesn't work. can anyone give me some pointers to help me troubleshoot this problem? even better, does anyone have a t3 working over usb? thanks for any help! kep ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
usb psx-pc joypad adapter
hi guys, i've got a usb joystick working ok, but i wanted to try with a playstation controller and usb adapter. the adapter has two ports, and a single usb connector. when i plug it into my 6.0-STABLE thinkpad i get this in dmesg: uhid0: vendor 0x0b43 product 0x0003, rev 1.00/19.12, addr 2, iclass 3/0 uhid0: no report descriptor device_attach: uhid0 attach returned 6 as opposed to this on the detected joystick: uhid0: MOSIC USB 2A4K GamePad, rev 1.10/1.00, addr 2, iclass 3/0 so, wondered if there was anything i could try to get this working? if not, does anyone know if the single port versions of these adapters are supported under freebsd? i want to use it with e-uae, zsnes and xmame. finally, i noticed epsxe in ports, a psx emulator. is anyone running this, and is it useable? what kind of setups do people have? thanks guys, merry crimbo.. kep ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
Dual dvi on FreeBSD
Hi Guys, I've just bought a pair of TFT screens and wanted to connect them to my FreeBSD box via their DVI connectors. I've been searching with google and the list archives, and it seems that the NVidia stuff doesn't dual head and that ATI are rather unhelpful with regard to drivers. I found the project to write drivers for the x800 series cards, but they look very less than ready. I'm currently running on i386, but will be building a big amd64 workstation shortly. These boards seem to use PCI express, and I was wondering how well supported is that? What about SLI? Is anyone running an amd64 system with dual dvi tft's? Are there any dual dvi cards supported ? Anyone running with two dvi cards? Any suggestions would be extremely helpful, Thanks, kep ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
ISDN terminal adapter
Heya, i need to get an ISDN terminal adapter working asap under freebsd. can anyone recommend one that "just works"? i've used a usr courier ta in the past (with an rs232 connection), but they don't seem to make the isdn model anymore. when i did it before i used userland ppp. is that still the way to go for dial on demand dialup? i've been trying to get an hayes accurar ISDN terminal adapter (that works fine bonded on a BT ISDN line in the UK) to work on FreeBSD. when i plugs it in it identifies as: ugen0: ISDN USB TA . rev 1.10/1.00, addr 2. suspecting it really needed to be coming up on ucom0 or somesuch, i tried using kldload to load some usb related drivers: uftdi. ubsa, ubser, uplcom and umct. would that work, when it had already been detected on ugen? i guessed that loading the modules would have the same effect as, and be quicker than, rebuilding the kernel. was this a correct assumption? am i on the right track, or barking up the wrong tree? any other ideas? i'm currently using the windows machine with internet connection sharing, so am really desperate for any help! thanks! ian ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
Epson Stylus C86 and apsfilter
Hi, i needed a printer so i checked linuxprinting.org and thought an epson c86 would be a good idea. i'm trying to set it up using usb. now i've googled off and on for a few days now, and seen that people have strong opinions as to whether they use CUPS or not. i tried a few printcap recipies that i wasn't sure how to use, and after more reading saw that the recommended driver for my printer was gimp-print. ideally i'd like something simple, that i can later use with samba, so i was thinking along the lines of lpr or lprng. so more fiddling, and i've got apsfilter and ghostscript-gnu-nox11 installed, and choose the closest driver from the nice apsfilter menu - epson stylus c80. i fill in the other details, and it seems fine - /dev/ulpt0 & a4 - but when i try the test page i get lines of text on the paper as follows:
