Size of FreeBSD

Could you please tell me how big FreeBSD is, in terms
of both (1) the bare minimum needed to run
applications and (2) the typical installation.  How
many 1.44MB diskettes, for example.  

The point of my interest has to do with an old concern
about how the OS's (Microsoft's especially) have
become gargantuan in size.

(Actually, I went back and forth through the website
literature trying to figure this out, and finally gave
up.  It may be that the question itself treads on an
issue that no longer is challenged - the size of OS
installations.  I'm frustrated that they have to be so
big.  THank you again for responding.  FreeBSD has
great logical appeal to me, notwithstanding.)
