ACPI issue on my Toshiba laptop
Hi all, As you're already aware, there've been known issues with ACPI running on some laptops. For instance, mine is a Toshiba Satellite A105-S2051. When I first installed FreeBSD v6.3 I would get the following error... *** ACPI-0370: Error - No installed handler for fixed event *** From here, I wouldn't be able to use my built-in LAN or Atheros 5212 wireless because of constant WATCHDOG: DEVICE TIMEOUT error messages. However, I later found out that by disabling the ACPI by placing two lines in your /boot/device.hints or /boot/loader.conf files, hint.apic.0.disabled=1 hint.acpi.0.disabled=1 you would be able to use both the wireless and LAN without the ACPI running. This has been the case for me for a while, and everything was going great until lastnight I went to go do my monthly source update. While rebooting I couldn't get back into FreeBSD. I would get this dreadful message at the very beginning of the scrolling boot up messages ioapic0: Assuming intbase of 0 *panic: Bogus interrupt flags* From here I only had two options, either shut down or reboot, but would get the same message no matter what. In other words, FreeBSD won't let me fully boot up unless I have ACPI enabled or select the boottime option to run with it enabled. Booting up would let me back into FreeBSD, but then I'd start getting the awful, Watchdog: Device Timeout messages, and my LAN and wireless connections would be useless. I'm assuming there was something added in the source update that altered the ACPI again?? Does anyone know how to get around this?? It's driving me nuts! FreeBSD is basically useless if I can't use any Internet connection. :( Thank You in advance -Frustrated FreeBSD user. ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org
IP Banning (Using IPFW)
Hello, I was wondering if there's some sort of port available that can actively ban IPs that try and bruteforce a service such as SSH or Telnet, by scanning the /var/log/auth.log log for Regex such as Illegal User or LOGIN FAILURES, and then using IPFW to essentially deny (ban) that IP for a certain period of time or possibly forever. I've seen a very useful one that works for linux (fail2ban), and was wondering if one exists for FreeBSD's IPFW? I've looked around in /usr/ports/security and /usr/ports/net but can't seem to find anything that closely resembles that. Your help would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance! Michael A., USA... I'm trying to update my source tree. When I 'CD' to /usr/src and execute the command, make update I get this error make: don't know how to make update. Stop Am I missing something? I was just curious if FreeBSD supports any of the UPS's that have the automated powerdown feature in the event of powerloss (APM)? Michael A. Dialup Modem/FreeBSD v4.9
I run a server on FreeBSD v4.9 and have broadband access on it. However, I also have a dialup modem (external) that I use to dial-in when I can't access the box via broadband because of connection issues, etc. Is there a way to assign an IP address to the modem device (/dev/cuaa1) so that when I do a who or last while dialed in, I'll be able to see an assigned IP address of the device /dev/cuaa1? Or is that only for /dev/tty's Any faq or link to a FreeBSD.org section on this would be much appreciated. I recently uninstalled the Apache2 port to be able to use the Apache13-modssl port for SSL pages. However, I had a friend tell me that Apache13-modssl is alot less secure than Apache2. Closed ports (services)
Hi there, I had a question... I was running DAYTIME (port 13) and POP3 (port 110 - Qpopper) services with no problems up until lastnight. For some reason I think the SA-03:11 (sendmail) and SA-03:12 (SSH) patches I installed have done something to those ports. If I do a 'netstat -an' it'll show that those ports are listening, but when I try to telnet to them remotely I get a connection refused message for the POP3/Qpopper port, but a timeout error with the daytime port. I do get a connection when I telnet to localhost of those two ports. I have a firewall that allows connections to those two ports but I haven't touched the config for that in a while. I did notice that I got an error while applying the SA-03:11 (Sendmail) patch. I couldn't completely install it. Do you think that might have something to do with my problem?? Any ideas??? LABEL (The FreeBSD Disklabel Editor)
I have an existing FreeBSD v4.7 installation and want to delete a small filesystem that I had designated for email (/var/mail), and want to freeup that unused space to the '/usr/home' filesystem. If I use DISKLABEL to delete '/var/mail', and then re-write '/usr/home' to reflect the added space (writing the changes to the SAME '/usr/home' partition), will that erase the '/usr/home' filesystem and all of its user-data contents from the disk itself??? ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Pop server
I'm using POPPER for my POP3 server daemon and I did a test of sending email from a remote host to my (mail)host. I noticed this message in my /var/log/maillog Mar 11 13:21:33 ftp sm-mta[12437]: h2BILXsj012437: tcpwrappers (terminal.mdc.net, 209.251.64.36) rejection I uncommented the POP3 line in my /etc/inetd.conf file, as well as added a popper: ALL line to my /etc/hosts.allow file. I'm assuming that this service isn't TCP wrapped?? I confirmed this by executing, tcpdchk after I restarted the inetd daemon. The message I got said that, Popper isn't wrapped. Is there a port/package that I could use to allow popper to be wrapped by inetd so I can get my POP3 server to allow incoming mail?? FYI: I'm using SENDMAIL as my smtp (email program) running on FreeBSD v4.7. -- Michael A. Sendmail Error
To Whom It May Concern: Can you please tell me what this error means: mail: /usr/sbin/sendmail: Exec format error I get this error when trying to send mail (internally to other users on my host). I think the error might have to do with the recent patch I tried appying to my FreeBSD v4.7 system. Although I didn't install the patch correctly (because of a file not found error), I think it has something to do with it. Sendmail was working fine before I tried applying the patch. I looked on the Sendmail.org website for a FAQ on this error but was unsuccessful. Do you known where I could find info/resolution to this problem (error)? Much help would be greatly appreciatedTHANKS! -- Michael A.
