Hello all. Perhaps there are some differences in the 5.x series for serial port options that I'm not aware of. I plugged in a null-modem cable, and opened HyperTerminal on my laptop. I added a boot.config file in my root directory on the freebsd system with the one line: -P Great news. I unplugged the keyboard and mouse and kept the monitor plugged in just for measure. I loaded hyperterm and watched as the system detected the missing keyboard/mouse and I began to see text on my terminal. Everything loaded fine, until the login prompt. Last thing I saw was the current time and date on hyperterm. On the monitor was the login screen. I couldn't even log in via ssh. RE: howto upgrade 4.8 to 4.9 without cdrom or floppy? ERROR
There's actually a very simple process to use to upgrade, providing you have a broadband connection: 1) cvsup your sources to the newer sources. For more information read about cvsup or checkout the handbook! 2) once you have new sources, cd to /usr/src and type make world; this could take an hour or more 3) if this completes OK, cd to /usr/src/sys/i386/conf (on 386-based processor systems) and type: # config GENERIC (or whatever your kernel config file is) 4) type: # cd ../../compile/GENERIC (or name of kernel config file) # make; make depend; make install 5) if this completes OK, type: # shutdown -r now 6) once rebooted, login, and check uname -a. You will see stats for a 4.9-x kernel! I've managed to do everything here remotely from my own console, including reboots when updating the OS requires it -- that is except when reconfiguring the natd.conf file to add another forwarding service. I can reboot and it comes up okay, but rather would avoid a reboot. BUT, if I try to kill/restart the natd daemon remotely, it kills my SSH session -- no restart of NATD -- cannot log back in and that means a 30-min trip for someone to the colo. That gets old and rather just reboot which is a lot less inconvenient. Obviously, when I do the kill of natd, it disconnects my SSH session and I can't restart the daemon so it can reread the natd.conf file for my changes. I've tried a background script, but that hasn't worked either. Perhaps a second session would stay alive either SSH or even a telnet session just for the duration for this event??? Or a better background script...?? I'd rather not do any uninformed guessing/gambling on different techniques to cause a lock out. Greetings, In March I will be retracing the Lewis & Clark route solo by canoe from Illinois to the Pacific. I have created an educational web site called In The Wake Of Discovery and will involve schools, organizations, history buffs or anyone with Internet access. I will be documenting the L&C trail as it appears today during the bicentennial celebration of that famous endeavor. My web site: http://www.lewisandclark-2004.com will be updated from remote areas along the trail. I am in hopes of finding a donor of a laptop to be used to bring this journey to those that follow. Do you know of any individuals or organizations who would contribute the use of a laptop? It will be returned upon the completion of this project in October of 2004. I can provide the donor with written testimonial, photos of their product in use, web site links to their company, and mention their contribution to any media I encounter. This is a unique educational endeavor. The L&C bicentennial will be the first bicentennial to be celebrated on the World Wide Web. It is anticipate that over 25 million people will partake in some form of L&C exhibit, reenactment, site, or other educational display over the next three years. It is my hope you can help provide me with information on where I may be able to obtain this donation. Thank You for your help in this matter. I hope you join me begining in March of 2004. Resolution problems in x and CLI
Hello all, Ive got a couple of questions regarding resolutions. First, is there a way to increase/decrease the resolution of the CLI interface? Ive got a laptop that only seems to use the center 1/3 of the screen, Im thinking 640x480, where my native resolution is 1024x768. My next question refers to xfree86. The messages you see as attachments are messages that have been PGP signed to prove their authenticity. The problem is with Outlook Express. Not only does it fail to support PGP/MIME (many programs don't support PGP/MIME and still can display PGP signed email correctly), but it is actually broken. Outlook Express ignores the following MIME headers in the message: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Disposition: inline These headers show that the part is not an attachment but should be displayed inline, and that it contains pure text that doesn't need a special handler to be displayed. Why Outlook Express fails to recognize this, and why Microsoft fails to issue a patch to fix the problem, is unknown. RE: IPF and Routing
Why bother doing nat? You *could* just setup a DHCP server on the gateway for the remaining IP address and when the other 14 machines came online, they could dynamically pull the IP addy. Just set some very strict rules on the incoming packets to the rest of the internal network. This is a similar thing to what I did when I had an 8-block from Qwest a couple years ago. The situation is that I need to setup a network where each machine gets a unique global IP address from behind a firewall which performs NAT. I have 16 addresses so my question is can I alias 14 addresses to the primary nic and then config each private address to map directly to one global address or have I missed something fundamental about this ? Any advice is appreciated. RE: Another question - Boot Menu
Yes, that's usually the NTFS (Windows NT, 2000Pro, Xppro) partition and it WILL boot the correlating operating system. YIM?
Hey all. I'm trying to install the new (non-blocked) version of YIM according to the instructions on the website. My problem is that I've got the newest version of GTK (2.3.4 I think) and newer versions of the four or five other dependencies. Is there a work around, or can I install old versions as well as new versions of these apps? RE: A question about freeBSD.
Dawn, FreeBSD can most definitely meet the needs of your office, depending on what they are and what applications are available. For example, I'm not sure of what exact program is necessary, but I know there are Microsoft Exchange type server apps out there for FreeBSD, so the partners shouldn't even have to change their desktop machines, unless they all want to... The FreeBSD system can provide email, web server, fileserver, and proxy server access for a large number of clients, and 6 will definitely not be a problem. Send us an email on what, exactly your requirements are, and one of us will be able to help you set that portion up. Remember, FreeBSD is free to use, and it can't hurt trying to set something up, right? RE: adding webmail
Hey. I used to use ADJweb as my web-mail client. Worked pretty well, too. You should be able to find more about it at http://www.adjeweb.com/ The interface is 100% customizable and I didn't have a single problem with it while I was using it. Right now I'm running sendmail with procmail and using spamassassin; I'd like to keep this setup. Looking at the squirrelmail port has raised some questions for me. -I don't really grasp where the imap server comes into play -can I even keep the setup above and have squirrelmail? -can I continue to use the same 'unix' mailboxes, spools? I know that these questions are rather basic, but I'm not seeing what I need to in the squirrelmail docs, and the cyrus-imap port looks alittle daunting as well (overkill?). -- tia, Sean ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
RE: BSD Question
Usually, windows will show up in the BSD boot manager as ???, so the boot prompt on my system (Win2K and FreeBSD 5.1) is the following: F1 ??? F2 FreeBSD When I've installed FreeBSD on a physically separate drive, it usually creates two boot menus similar to the following: F1 ??? F2 Disk 1 (pressing F2) F1 Disk 0 F2 FreeBSD As far as getting KDE to work, you should have the following in your user directory (usually /home/) in the file .xinitrc exec startkde You can put other things in there, say if you wanted to start ymessenger or something similar as you load KDE. If you want to boot into graphical right away, see the post I just went through from the last couple days: KDM and FreeBSD HTH Eric F Crist AdTech Integrated Systems, Inc (952) 403-9000 -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of David Witt Sent: Saturday, October 04, 2003 4:27 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: BSD Question I'm a Unix newbie who just installed BSD 5.1. I made it through the installation without too much of a hassel and I went ahead and added XFree86 in the installation, along with the BSD Boot Manager since I'm dual booting with Windows. I have a 40 gig HD for Windows then I have 2 separate 120 gig HD raided in 0 config for BSD. The boot manager is installed with the rest of BSD on the raid but when it loads and I go to pick, both options boot to BSD. F1 is labeled FreeBSD and F5 is labeled Drive 1, which I was under the illusion should be windows but it turns out its not. When I boot into BSD, it leads me to a text based login screen, how do I get KDE to function. Thank you in advance. David Witt _ Get McAfee virus scanning and cleaning of incoming attachments.
