Frank,

Install MySQL from Ports - it'll save you a lot of headache.

su root
cd /usr/ports/databases/mysql51-server
make install clean

Edit /etc/rc.conf to add:
mysql_enable="YES"

execute:
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/mysql-server.sh start

Should be good to go after that!

Thanks for the answer Don, but I finally figured it out. Apparently

Tell the bios to set off an alarm at a high temp, and
use sysctl -a | grep thermal to get your temps. What
kind of power supply do you have? Have you changed or
checked other bios settings?

I don't see any settings in BIOS regarding alarms and

fan speeds. I tried changing some settings, but when
I do, the mobo decides I must have a different
processor.

You also need to turn on ttyd0 in /etc/ttys:

ttyd0 "/usr/libexec/getty std.9600" vt100 on secure

Perhaps there are some differences in the 5.x series for serial port
options that I'm not aware of. I plugged in a null-modem cable, and
opened HyperTerminal on my laptop. I added a boot.config file in my
root directory on the freebsd system with the one line: -P

Great news. I unplugged the keyboard and mouse and kept the monitor
plugged in just for measure. I loaded hyperterm and watched as the
system detected the missing keyboard/mouse and I began to see text on my
terminal. Everything loaded fine, until the login prompt. Last thing I
saw was the current time and date on hyperterm. On the monitor was the
login screen. I couldn't even log in via ssh. If I boot with a
keyboard/mouse, I get a normal system and I can log in via ssh.

Please help.

RE: howto upgrade 4.8 to 4.9 without cdrom or floppy? ERROR

2003-12-15 Thread Minnesota Slinky
There's actually a very simple process to use to upgrade, providing you
have a broadband connection:

1) cvsup your sources to the newer sources. For more information read
about cvsup or checkout the handbook!
2) once you have new sources, cd to /usr/src and type make world; this
could take an hour or more
3) if this completes OK, cd to /usr/src/sys/i386/conf (on 386-based
processor systems) and type:
# config GENERIC (or whatever your kernel config file is)
4) type:
# cd ../../compile/GENERIC (or name of kernel config file)
# make; make depend; make install
5) if this completes OK, type:
# shutdown -r now
6) once rebooted, login, and check uname -a. You will see stats for a
4.9-x kernel!

Multi-threading

Hello,

Recently I've got a new PC: P4 Titan 2.6 GHz.
It says in the brochure that it has "HyperThreading", which I think is
somehow related to the HyperThread thing in the FreeBSD kernel, right?

I know there's this message in /usr/src/UPDATING, which unfortunately
does not clear up the matter for me.

So let me recap what I believe to understand:

For utilizing the advantages of this HyperThreading stuff for users, I
need in the kernel configuration:
   optionsSMP# Symmetric MultiProcessor Kernel
   optionsAPIC_IO# Symmetric (APIC) I/O

Furthermore, I need to set "machdep.hlt_logical_cpus" to 0 (zero). How
do I add this to "the loader" so that it is set to zero at every boot
up? Should I simply add to my /boot/loader.conf a line like:

   machdep.hlt_logical_cpus="0"

After that, I'm done with the hyperthreading?

Thanks,
Rob.

PS: if you're in the mood, I would appreciate a few words on what this
HyperThreading is about and what advantages I can expect. Thanks too!

What I find usually works for me is a simple script that checks to see
if natd is running. If not, it reloads natd after flusshing all the

change that to match your needs.

Subject: NATD remote management

Dear list:
I manage a remote gateway/nat/router/fw server where it is not
convenient for anyone to go downtown to the colo and do reboots.

I've managed to do everything here remotely from my own console,
including reboots when updating the OS requires it -- that is except
when reconfiguring the natd.conf file to add another forwarding service.
I can reboot and it comes up okay, but rather would avoid a reboot. BUT,
if I try to kill/restart the natd daemon remotely, it kills my SSH
session -- no restart of NATD -- cannot log back in and that means a
30-min trip for someone to the colo. That gets old and rather just
reboot which is a lot less inconvenient.

Obviously, when I do the kill of natd, it disconnects my SSH session and
I can't restart the daemon so it can reread the natd.conf file for my
changes.

I've tried a background script, but that hasn't worked either. Perhaps a
second session would stay alive either SSH or even a telnet session
just for the duration for this event??? Or a better background
script...??

I'd rather not do any uninformed guessing/gambling on different
techniques to cause a lock out. There's probably a simple answer and
hope someone will remind me what it is

Many thanks & Happy Holidays to the list.

Subject: Need help: HyperThreading-CPU + FreeBSD-Stable +

How
do I add this to "the loader" so that it is set to zero at every boot
up? Should I simply add to my /boot/loader.conf a line like:

   machdep.hlt_logical_cpus="0"

After that, I'm done with the hyperthreading?

Thanks,
Rob.

PS: if you're in the mood, I would appreciate a few words on what this
HyperThreading is about and what advantages I can expect. Thanks too!

RE: Laptop for unique educational project.

2003-12-12 Thread Minnesota Slinky
Well, they can do anything most other laptops can do. They actually
come with built-in digital media readers. If your satellite phone has
an interface that appears/functions and either a data port or a modem,
then it should work.

I've never entered any identifier other than the default. What I
usually find works for me is simply running xf86cfg either from an xterm

simply quit. XFree86 has always been able to properly detect the

Dear Sir,

My name is Ziad Fazah. Indeed, after having configured adequately
Freebsd version 5.1 on my pc, I noticed that there was a mistake on the
non-detection of my Samsung Syncmaster monitor through the XF86Config.
Thus, I do ask you, whether Freebsd supports Samsung Syncmaster monitor
or not? Because according to my settings, there was a mistake concerning

my monitor in /etc/X11/XF86Config... It turns out that the question was
seeking an identifier for my monitor through the XF86Config. Thus, I
answered:Samsung, but the answer was wrong , therefore, I couldn't
proceed. So please, tell me what to do,referring to the identifier that
I do need to write for the monitor, in order to have all settings
correct in XF86Config. In anyway, I shall be awaiting your response as
soon as possible, and thanks a lot for your understanding.

 Sincerely,

Resolution problems in x and CLI

2003-12-06 Thread Minnesota Slinky
Hello all,

I’ve got a couple of questions regarding resolutions.
First, is there a way to increase/decrease the
resolution of the CLI interface? I’ve got a laptop
that only seems to use the center 1/3 of the screen,
I’m thinking 640x480, where my native resolution is
1024x768.

My next question refers to xfree86. Part of my log
file seems to indicate X is running at 640x480, and
another seems to indicate 1024x768. Is there a way I
can test this for sure?

Sirs,

I hope this is the place I can ask a question.

I'm trying to setup FreeBSD on a machine. It wouldn't even boot from CD
to install because of a network card error. I bought another network
card (Netgear model FA311) and it seemed to work. At least I was able
to install FreeBSD. Upon further inspection, after installation and
re-boot, I noticed that this card was also getting and error. The
following three lines are what I get:

sis0: at device 13.0 on pci0
sis0: couldn't map ports/memory
device_probe_and_attach: sis0 attach returned 6

I admit that I am VERY new to the Unix/Linux stuff. I know the card
fails, but why? It's new and from the above three lines I am unable to
find any kind of help to answer the question.

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated and I thank you in
advance for any you can give me.

Continued 4.9-5.x upgrade problems.

2003-11-29 Thread Minnesota Slinky
Ok all,

I've been working on this 4.9-5.x upgrade for over a
week now, and I'm at my wit's end. I've been doing
the make -NOLIBPTHREAD=true buildworld, etc.
Everything works great until I do the make
NOLIBPTHREAD=true installworld. It ends with the
error that my kernel is not fresh enough and I get a
core dump. I've tried a few different things, as
listed below.

I tried everything suggested by Mr. Stewart by doing
the following sequence of events:
1) make NOLIBPTHREAD=true buildworld
2) make NOLIBPTHREAD=true buildkernel
3) make NOLIBPTHREAD=true installkernel
4) make NOLIBPTHREAD=true installworld

I get an error on the installworld about my kernel not
being fresh enough. So, I try the following:
1) make NOLIBPTHREAD=true buildworld
2) make NOLIBPTHREAD=true buildkernel
3) make NOLIBPTHREAD=true installkernel
4) reboot system, attempt to load
/boot/kernel, failure

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Would it
just be easier to do a binary upgrade via sysinstall?
Is there a howto somewhere? Once I complete this,
would it help if I write one?

TIA, I won't have any hair left, soon, and I'm only in
my early 20's.

Also, does anyone know why my emails continue to be
rejected from my laptop with the following error:

Hi. This is the qmail-send program at radicalv.com.

Kris PGP signs his mail (like I do). This requires MIME. Most MUAs
show text/plain attachments directly.

The messages you see as attachments are messages that have been PGP
signed to prove their authenticity. The problem is with Outlook
Express. Not only does it fail to support PGP/MIME (many programs
don't support PGP/MIME and still can display PGP signed email
correctly), but it is actually broken. Outlook Express ignores the
following MIME headers in the message:

  Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1
  Content-Disposition: inline

These headers show that the part is not an attachment but should be
displayed inline, and that it contains pure text that doesn't need a
special handler to be displayed. Why Outlook Express fails to
recognize this, and why Microsoft fails to issue a patch to fix the
problem, is unknown.

I talked to a couple of people who do beta testing for Microsoft and
they said the issue came up a few years ago. According to them (one

First rule of thumb is to re-cvsup src-all after you have waited awhile.
If
that doesn't work, include the error messages.

If you are following -current, you should also be subscribed to the
lists that
deal with problems, such as cvs-all, hackers, -current, and etc. You can
see
the problem being addressed and then fixed.

This used to be part of the suggested requirements for following stable
and
they definitely apply to current.

Greetings
I recently installed FreeBSD 4.5 with desk top KDE using a CD that came
with the book, FreeBSD Unleashed, by Michael Urban and Brian Tiemann.
Everything seemed to go fine until I execute startx. The desktop
environment on my screen "seems" to be at least four times as big as it
should be, displaying only the top left portion of the desktop.

The strange part of this problem is that the install program displays
all of the display option screens in the correct size and font.

Any advice to get me going will be appreciated.

RE: IPF and Routing

2003-10-07 Thread Minnesota Slinky
Why bother doing nat? You *could* just setup a DHCP server on the
gateway for the remaining IP address and when the other 14 machines came
online, they could dynamically pull the IP addy. Just set some very
strict rules on the incoming packets to the rest of the internal
network. This is a similar thing to what I did when I had an 8-block
from Qwest a couple years ago.

Hello,
I have question regarding IPNat and routing. The situation is that I
need to setup a network where each machine gets a unique global IP
address from behind a firewall which performs NAT. I have 16 addresses
so my question is can I alias 14 addresses to the primary nic and then
config each private address to map directly to one global address or
have I missed something fundamental about this ?

Any advice is appreciated.

Does pressing F1 actually boots Windows? Which version of windows do you
have installed?

The "???" name means the boot loader doesn't have an entry for that
partition type in its built in table (or at least that's what I think it
means :)

RE: A question about freeBSD.

2003-10-05 Thread Minnesota Slinky
Dawn,

FreeBSD can most definitely meet the needs of your office, depending on
what they are and what applications are available. For example, I'm not
sure of what exact program is necessary, but I know there are Microsoft
Exchange type server apps out there for FreeBSD, so the partners
shouldn't even have to change their desktop machines, unless they all
want to...

The FreeBSD system can provide email, web server, fileserver, and proxy
server access for a large number of clients, and 6 will definitely not
be a problem.

Send us an email on what, exactly your requirements are, and one of us
will be able to help you set that portion up. Remember, FreeBSD is free
to use, and it can't hurt trying to set something up, right?

I want to broaden access to my home email by adding a webmail interface.
Right now I'm running sendmail with procmail and using spamassassin; I'd
like to keep this setup. Looking at the squirrelmail port has raised
some questions for me.

-I don't really grasp where the imap server comes into play -can I even
keep the setup above and have squirrelmail? -can I continue to use the
same 'unix' mailboxes, spools?

I know that these questions are rather basic, but I'm not seeing what I
need to in the squirrelmail docs, and the cyrus-imap port looks alittle
daunting as well (overkill?).

RE: BSD Question

2003-10-04 Thread Minnesota Slinky
Usually, windows will show up in the BSD boot manager as ???, so the
boot prompt on my system (Win2K and FreeBSD 5.1) is the following:

F1 ???
F2 FreeBSD

When I've installed FreeBSD on a physically separate drive, it usually
creates two boot menus similar to the following:

F1 ???
F2 Disk 1

(pressing F2)

F1 Disk 0
F2 FreeBSD

As far as getting KDE to work, you should have the following in your
user directory (usually /home/) in the file .xinitrc

exec startkde

You can put other things in there, say if you wanted to start ymessenger
or something similar as you load KDE. If you want to boot into
graphical right away, see the post I just went through from the last
couple days: KDM and FreeBSD

to
BSD. F1 is labeled FreeBSD and F5 is labeled Drive 1, which I was under
