terrible mplayer performance
Ok. I'm stuck. Mplayer's performance is worse on this laptop than it is on my Toshiba running with a half-speed processor. I have attempted all the suggestions I can find re: getting the performance. The video is slow - so it lags the audio by quite a bit. I keep getting "Your processor is too slow..." stuff. What to do? I built mplayer from ports (not package). mplayer-1.0.r20100117_1 My computer is an HP Pavilion dv4 xorg.conf is set up to run the vesa driver. That's how X -configure set it up. The problem with learning a method using shortcuts is that the "pure" method becomes unnatural and difficult. vi becomes real useful once you start doing things in it by reflex. If your reflexes are of the pure method then you should be good from one vi to the next. Even in my case, using the arrow keys seems more natural for jumping around (than using the jkl and ; keys). This is even more true for me since I use the Dvorak keyboard layoun and j, k, l and ; are not close together (well, j and k are -- and l and ; are too; but still not quick or easy to use for navigation.) umass mount woes
I got a new whiz-bang mp3 play from SanDisk. I went with SanDisk because they have always worked so well with non-windows for me. Anyway, I'm having a bit of a problem mounting it. This configuration file is searched for in the following places when the server is started as a normal user: /etc/X11/ /usr/X11R6/etc/X11/ /etc/X11/$XORGCONFIG /usr/X11R6/etc/X11/$XORGCONFIG /etc/X11/xorg.conf-4 /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/xorg.conf /usr/X11R6/etc/X11/xorg.conf. /usr/X11R6/etc/X11/xorg.conf-4 /usr/X11R6/etc/X11/xorg.conf /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xorg.conf. /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xorg.conf-4 /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xorg.conf I always just stick it in /etc/ . Anyway, I don't remember where I finally found this answer since it isn't mentioned in man xorg.conf: so here, for a model, is the pertenant section of my xorg.conf you can use as a model: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard0" Option "XkbLayout" "dvorak" Driver "kbd" EndSection I hope this helps. == Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, for all his works are truth, and his ways are justice; and he is able to bring low those who walk in pride. nForce4 IDE channel UDMA woes
This is a problem on a home-built computer using an nVidia nForce4 motherboard. IDE 1 and 2 each have two devices. IDE 1 master: a Maxtor hard drive (jumpered to master) IDE 1 slave: a CDRW (jumpered to slave) IDE 2 master: CDRW (jumpered to master) IDE 2 slave: CDRW (jumpered to slave) So, when I do something intense - like build a new kernel or buildworld - I start getting the following in stdout: ad0: WARNING - WRITE_DMA48 UDMA ICRC error (retrying request) LBA=505006527 ad0: FAILURE - WRITE_DMA48 status=51 error=4 LBA=505006527 ad0: WARNING - WRITE_DMA48 UDMA ICRC error (retrying request) LBA=505006655 ad0: FAILURE - WRITE_DMA48 status=51 error=4 LBA=505006655 g_vfs_done():ad0s1f[WRITE(offset=253247242240, length=131072)]error = 5 ad0: WARNING - WRITE_DMA48 UDMA ICRC error (retrying request) LBA=505006527 ad0: FAILURE - WRITE_DMA48 status=51 error=4 LBA=505006527 ad0: WARNING - WRITE_DMA48 UDMA ICRC error (retrying request) LBA=505006655 ad0: FAILURE - WRITE_DMA48 status=51 error=4 LBA=505006655 g_vfs_done():ad0s1f[WRITE(offset=253247242240, length=131072)]error = 5 ad0: WARNING - WRITE_DMA48 UDMA ICRC error (retrying request) LBA=505006527 ad0: WARNING - WRITE_DMA48 UDMA ICRC error (retrying request) LBA=505006655 ad0: FAILURE - WRITE_DMA48 status=51 error=4 LBA=505006655 ad0: FAILURE - WRITE_DMA48 status=51 error=4 LBA=505006527 g_vfs_done():ad0s1f[WRITE(offset=253247242240, length=131072)]error = 5 ad0: WARNING - WRITE_DMA48 UDMA ICRC error (retrying request) LBA=505006527 ad0: FAILURE - WRITE_DMA48 status=51 error=4 LBA=505006527 ad0: WARNING - WRITE_DMA48 UDMA ICRC error (retrying request) LBA=505006655 ad0: FAILURE - WRITE_DMA48 status=51 error=4 LBA=505006655 g_vfs_done():ad0s1f[WRITE(offset=253247242240, length=131072)]error = 5 Now, interestingly, if I unplug the CDRW that uses IDE 1 slave, everything works fine. But for my needs, I need three CDRWs. Questions: I have noticed a lot of Internet chatter about this kind of thing happening with similar configurations on WinXP. Using the generic XP IDE driver seems to fix it. Could this be a problem with FreeBSD? Do you think it would be a dumb idea to try to run either the hard drive or one of the CDRWs from one of the available SATAs? == Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, for all his works are truth, and his ways are justice; and he is able to bring low those who walk in pride.
