Re: /sys/amd64/conf/DEFAULTS
On 11/08/11 12:36, O. Hartmann wrote: Sorry for the boring question, but is the default configuration file /sys/amd64/conf/DEFAULTS anywhere include in a regular configuration file for the kernel while building the kernel? I looked for include statements in GENERIC, but didn't find one. I use custom kernel config files and adapt most changes from the NOTES files in the sources tree. With the today's update of README in /sys/amd64/conf I realised some important changes, so this triggered my question. I simply made an additional "include" in the custom config file, but if this isn't necessary, I'll delete it again. And I'm interested in how the kernel is built from. It is a very convenient way to type simply "make kerne" in /usr/src/, but it vanishes to much of the complexity and understanding how the system builds and could cause problems. Thanks for your patience and tahnks in advance, Regards, Oliver From my understanding of things, the DEFAULTS kernel configuration file is automatically included into the build by config(8). There is no need to include it into the generic using the "include" statement. It was first added 6 years ago, on October 27 2005. Otherwise the output of the script (i.e. nmap) will end up on stdout. Save the file with a .sh extention, chmod u+x file to make it executable, and run it. sh(1) has more info on how the sh shell works and how to write scripts in it. Re: Where is mfsroot.flp ?
Yuan, Jue wrote: Hi all. I just wonder where mfsroot.flp is going now. It seems it has been replaced by boot.flp and kernX.flp. why? What I really want is to get a mfsroot to embed into a FreeBSD kernel, since kernel has option MD_ROOT to support this. I have found mfsroot.gz in boot/, but after uncompressing, it turns out to be as big as 4.2MB, which is too big for me. :-( Does anyone knows how to create a custom mfsroot, say which files do I need to put in to it, to make it not larger than 4MB? Any idea would be greatly appreciated. :-) The mfsroot.flp has been replaced in favour of kernX.flp. It was sometime when the mfsroot grew bigger that the 1.44KiB-limit. What someone did was making the kernel splitable over multiple floppies, and still bootable, iirc. Why do you need a mfsroot instead of an ordinary /? Are you planing on making a live cd? Just out of curiosity. Re: securing FreeBSD
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: hi guys I would like to secure my FreeBSD server. I don't want anyone to be able to access to the disk using a bootable CD (or by setting the actual hdd to secondary and plug an other primary hdd). I just don't want anyone to be able to hack this box nor any password. Do you have a solution? Cheers Alex You can start by looking in the handbook, chapter 14, about security. Then you also have security(7) manual page to look at for information about how to secure a FreeBSD server. I don't want to use ntpd -q and just sync it on computer startup, because the clock drifts too much. How do I manage to get a properly configured ntpd without giving the whole world access to it? I can't find a /etc/malloc.conf in my system, niether can i find a AJ symlink. I'm running 5.3-BETA7 now, but are planning to upgrade to HEAD. Will malloc debugging be turned on in the upgrade?
