Abstraction leakage burning test DVD+R
Hello, After my dump/restore test failed back in May of 2010[1], I finally got around to burning a test DVD after installing about 2.5 inches of semi-rigid foam under the machine to dampen any local vibration. In designing the test, I was under the mistaken impression that buffer under-runs would reduce the amount of space for writing. Apparently, DVD+R media supports loss-less linking[2]. Test Procedure (using ATAPI interface, rather than the newer ATAPI/CAM interface). The man pages do not imply any major differences for this test. The drive in question is a LG drive with the SuperMulti logo. Test procedure: 1.# mkfifo auxout aux45G 2. In other terminals: # cat auxout | md5 # dd if=aux45G count=2197266 bs=2048 | md5 3. Write test disk: # dd if=/dev/urandom bs=2048 count=2295104 | \ tee auxout aux45G | dd of=/dev/acd0 bs=2048 Error: dd:/dev/acd0: Input/output error 679+0 records in 678+0 records out 1388544 bytes transferred in 80.97 seconds (step 4 not completed due to premature burn failure after 684 blocks, 80 seconds (from 'dd if=aux45G'...) (15743 bytes/sec)) Drive spun up at least twice during this time. 4. Read test (in another term 'cat aux45G | md5') # dd if=/dev/acd0 bs=2048 count=2295104 | tee aux45G | md5 Questions: Currently, the drive is locked. Before forcefully ejecting it and risking an new disk, I want to know what may have gone wrong. Was I expecting too much of FreeBSD on old hardware? The hardware is a Pentium-II desktop machine with 256MB of RAM, with a Promise ATA100 controller card. An extra-long 80-wire cable is in use (to ad4). acd0: DVDR HL-DT-STDVD-RAM GSA-H55N/1.03 at ata-1-master UDMA33 ad4: 78167MB Maxtor 6Y080L0 YAR41WB0 at ata-2-master UDMA100 dd if=/dev/urandom of=/home/test Wrote at 4485315 bytes/second: faster than I was expecting (based on linux's slow urandom function), but still slow enough to cause buffer under-runs. So the second question is: do I have to do anything special to enable buffer underrun protection? (with DVD+R's lossless linking feature, no data should be lost.) How important is running ATAPI/CAM? Obviously DVD burning was happening before the release of version 8, as far as I know. If running out of data is supposed to be abstracted away, did I find a bug that only shows up on old hardware or heavy load? (Or possibly drive firmware bug?) Hello, On the Internet there are some sites where they say to start fetchmail(1) in system-wide should put these two options in rc.conf(5) : fetchmail_enable=YES fetchmail_polling_interval=60 Although the second is optional and at first has little to do with this question because this question is addressed rather to the first option. I searched in /etc/defaults/rc.conf and rc.conf(5) manual and find no reference to these two options. I have them in my rc.conf(5) but fetchmail(1) does not start automatically. In /usr/src/UPDATING not found any reference to it. Which is the correct way to start fetchmail(1) in system-wide? Sorry, I hate to come to the list with such a stupid question. I followed up a thread from a couple of months ago regarding this chipset which is not fully supported yet- hardware resetting errors- and I'm trying to work out how to build this driver from head. ORBit not upgrading
I have a wee problem... :) I've been naughty because I've been
working on other things and I was going to simply rebuild this m/c
when I got the chance anyway. Unfortunately I've run into a problem
where I need to upgrade because I've found a bug in php 5.3.2 which is
killing me. So I've run an upgrade at a rather late date, and
alswell... except ORBit is not behaving.
I've checked UPDATING and looked into the Makefiles, but for the life
of me I can't fathom what the hell is going on. It is running thru the

Now this is ORBit-0.5.17_5, and I don't think a manual reinstall
would make much difference. But WTF? Any Ideas?
As for the php error: anybody have trouble with preg_match and the
subject string being a variable? If I manually put the contents in as
the subject it works, but it won't read out of the variable. I'm
actually exec something and the variable holds the output (and yes, it
does work, and the variable holds the info right- just ran a print on
the variable) but the stupid thing is sending me bald and I can't
register a bug before an upgrade.

RNDIS is a protocol- and apparently there could be many more devices that use it as a universal medium since M$ opened the specs to public use. The linux output above says its something similar to cdce, but I don't think its the same- it also mentions rndis (rndis over cdce? or the reverse? Or just a slightly different form of cdce?). M$ were apparently talking about using it as a common medium for device comms so it could get hairy without it (much as I hate admitting that). I fiddled with cdce before, but didn't have any success- but that I think was more due to the fact I didn't know how to generate the devs file. I ended up putting the device manually into the driver but I don't think I was successful. (Incidentally I now know how to generate the damn file; stumbled on it by complete accident- so much for google! Couldn't find it by actually searching could I? I'll doc that here too: to generate usbdevs.h, run awk on the usbdevs2h.awk script in the dir- tools I think. There, that'll do I believe :) Google cache that!) This rndis module for Winblows Mobile should be close, but will probably need tweaking. Maybe merge with cdce as it appears to be in linux? That said if you have a Nexus maybe we can crack at it and share notes? I've gotten this far in ~2-3 mths, I'm sure it'll be quicker with someone with more coding experience and/or another phone. Interested? Incidentally, won't it be easier if it isn't just another modem, but just a network device? If the phone provides the IP all that needs to happen is to change the default route- right? Android usb tethering
Anyone tried the data tethering feature on the Android phones? I've tried cdce and tried modifying cdce but no luck. I need to regenerate the device list, but I haven't had any luck yet- simply running make doesn't work, and I've read Makefiles and googled out the wazoo. I tried modifying the details off the openmoko site for their data tether system (for FreeBSD8, mind), still no luck. Apparently it uses the cdc_ether RNDIS according to my Fedora shit media system. usbconfig concurs. Any hints, suggestions on how to further my investigations and getting this thing working? Anyone happen to be working on this? But I will clarify here: The HTC Android systems uses an Internet Sharing feature- essentially Google has coded in routing/nat system into the base OS (probably moding the leftover code already in the linux base), and is trying to allow similar using bluetooth and wifi at a later date as well. The RNDIS is a M$ system that allows sharing anything over USB (network, files, etc- but all essentially operated as network anyway), something they've been playing with for some years- I was looking for an A-A USB cable since around 2003 or so to quickly transfer files when needed. Apparently M$ opened the specs a year or two ago and everyone's jumped on to use it. So where Google started was to start allowing the use of the router/nat via RNDIS USB - somehow this was easier than allowing bluetooth or wifi (probably security and available hardware features). So yes, apparently the phone hooks up as a usb mass storage device, uploads a file to the computer, and disconnects and becomes a network device. Xorg manual configuration
I haven't got any response to Xorg in a jail, so I'll try and wing it... That said, I do need some help trying to figure out how to: 1. Determine exactly what Xorg is probing for (what details it needs, etc). So far I think I need memory address ranges, chipsets, etc. Found a lot of stuff in the log, but I'm not sure if its enough or all I need. 2. Then take the details and set them out in the Xorg.conf. (VideoAdaptor Section?) What I'm finding really annoying is why the manual configuration systems are completely unavailable as of now. I remember my first crack at getting X running on a 4.3 system, and having to go through screens of configurations for the monitor, card, inputs, etc. Ok, its cool now that we don't need to do this anymore, but it does kill things if you're trying this in a system which is restrictive. From all the info I gathered so far /dev/io is used for the probing. IF the details are entered manually, then surely this would mean it doesn't need io. I'm still not sure what to do about /dev/mem and /dev/kmem. This is just an experiment- please do humour me and let me have my fun trying to bang my head even against the brick wall- who knows? makeinfo is stopping portupgrade
Hi, I'm still running 5.5R on a machine that needs a few ports upgraded. However, portupgrade now fails consistently when I try to upgrade m4 and autoconf262 with errors that seem to relate to makeinfo. Is there anything I can do to make this work, short of upgrading the base system? Suspicious physical memory map from BIOS
Hi, I have some problem with physical memory being getting reported incorrectly on Freebsd 6.3. I have 4GB of RAM installed but BIOS call actually returns following usable physical memory map - base address = 0, length = 640K base address = 1M, length = 2.5G base address = 4G, length = 5.5G How am I getting this third segment? Also, in function getmemsize() in machdep.c, why the variable 'Maxmem' is set to 'Maxmem*4' when hw.physmem and the highest page number obtained from physical memory map don't match? Any help with this would be wonderful. Ports and 64-bit Processors
FreeBSD has supported 64-bit architectures for a while now... Alpha and UltraSPARC come to mind--even if Alpha is no longer a Tier 1 architecture. I'm surprised to hear so many of you say that certain ports are broken on AMD64. I would think if they worked on other 64-bit processors they'd work on AMD64. Switching to IPv6?
I've been considering switching my home network to IPv6. I have a computer acting as a firewall sitting between my ISP and my three LANs at home. Of course, my DSL provider gives me an IPv4 address, and everything I want to access on the Internet is on an IPv4 network. The whole point is to learn to set up IPv6, to play with IPv6, and to become familiar with it, so when the day comes that the world actually uses IPv6 (ha ha) I'm ready, armed with knowledge. But the whole idea will go to pot if my firewall can't let my IPv6 networks access my IPv4 Internet connection. Does FreeBSD 7 provide such facilities as to allow access to an IPv4 network from an IPv6 network? One more book question... Is there anything significant to gain from reading both The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System and The FreeBSD Architecture Handbook? I've skimmed the tables of contents for both books, and there seems to be some overlap in topics. Yet your point is completly valid one.. and that's why The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System is the only book that I've been hesitant on buying so far ... Lucas (Absolute FreeBSD, 2nd Edition), Lavigne (The Best of FreeBSD Basics), Kong (BSD rootkits), Lehey (Download edition:) ) are all over my desktop as I write this mail, and I consult them daily ... Farrokhi (Network Administration with FreeBSD) and Hong (Building a Server with FreeBSD 7) are the ones coming in the next batch ... Has anyone on the list read Building a Server with FreeBSD 7: A Modular Approach? The description on bookpool.com makes it sound a little basic/superficial, covering topics such as how to install FreeBSD and how to install/configure programs via the ports. I'm already very familiar with these topics; does anyone know if this book covers more advanced topics or details like the nitty-gritty of configuing sendmail, apache, samba, NFS, etc? And what about Absolute FreeBSD? It's updated for FreeBSD 7, so I know it's current. Is it a good book? Is it worth the read? How valuable is its content? (I know I'm asking some very subjective questions, but if I'm going to spend hundreds of $$$ to build my library in this area, I'd like at least a couple of opinions about the books I buy.) So far .. there are only three books I would have bought but I didn't because I thought the situation could improve ... those are: The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System, BSD Hacks and The FreeBSD HandBook... same reason for all of them .. too old by now (although I think I'll buy BSD Hacks anyways .. I just can't resist buying Lavigne books :( ) Personally, I don't think I'd ever buy The FreeBSD Handbook. It's a really good resource, but as long as it's actively updated electronically it's too dynamic to buy a hardcopy. I'd much rather read it online where I can get the latest revisions. make install a port, but with a package?
Hi, I have a bad feeling that this has been asked already, and not that long ago, but I can't find it in my mailbox. Is there a variable I can set so that running 'make install' in a port directory will cause it to download the package, if available, and install that instead of building from source? In other words, the equivalent of 'portupgrade -NPP'. I have looked at the .mk files and nothing in there seems to do that. This is for the situation where portupgrade isn't installed yet, and I'd like to install it quickly from packages so I don't have to wait for Ruby to build. Xorg build problem - font-misc-misc
Hi, I've _almost_ successfully upgraded to 7.2 xorg. For some reason, I'm getting a failure when building font-misc-misc and this stops other crucial ports getting built. At present, if I try to run 'X' I get the dreaded cannot find font fixed' error. I sync'd my ports tree again this morning but the problem remained. how to force ports to use OPENSSLBASE=/usr/local?

Dual boot problems
Hello, This weekend I purchased a laptop with a core2duo processor. The laptop came with windows Vista premier. Due to some applications that I require, removing Vista and installing FreeBSD is not an issue. (Please leave the Vista/Microsoft flames at the door) When I install FreeBSD/i386, I can then install grub (instead of FreeBSD's bootloader) and I can have grub chainload the Vista bootloader. All works fine. However, when I try FreeBSD/amd64, grub won't compile (it's architecture is forced to i386 only in the Makefile. I haven't dug into why, but I'm confident there is a reason. Obviously, grub becomes a non-option. Gag has the same limitation of being i386 only. Has anyone successfully been able to dual boot Vista + FreeBSD/amd64? I'm eager to have both on the laptop, however I've spent the entire weekend scouring google, and reinstalling both freebsd (i386 and amd64 versions) and have reinstalled vista at least 8 times. I've already thought about using the windows bootloader, but Vista has done away with NTLDR/boot.ini in favor of BCD. editing BCD seems non-trivial at best, and frankly I'm getting tired of reinstalling OS's; so I thought I'd ask around instead of reinventing the wheel. Thanks for the fast reply, Pete. It's actually 6.2-RELEASE/amd64, and I have tried compiling grub with the pentium3, and pentium4 CPUTYPE's in /etc/make.conf, to no avail. Sadly, it seems as though vista has code in the MBR now, that seems to be part of the bitlocker stuff. FreeBSD's standard bootloader interferes with it, causing Vista to give a error message about files being corrupted. Use the disk manager to create a partition (or resize the partition) to make room for FreeBSD. reboot, and install FreeBSD, installing a standard MBR (the machine will reboot directly into FreeBSD) After back into a fresh FreeBSD, do: sysinstall Configure Distributions lib32 (this installs 32bit compatibility libraries. Now fetch ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-6.2-release/Latest/grub.tbz (yes, the i386 package) pkg_add grub.tgz It will now work in compatibility mode, and you can use it same as you can with a native FreeBSD/i386. Hello, I'm writing a script to install a series of ports, and would like to use the following: cd /usr/ports/foo/bar make WITH_OPTION1=yes WITH_OPTION2=yes WITHOUT_ANOTHER=yes -DBATCH install That works as expected, but I would also like those settings written to the /var/db/ports/foobar/options file, so that future upgrades also include the choices I made during the batch install. I've scoured the /usr/ports/Mk/* files, and don't see anything useful for both BATCH and writing to the options file. Suggestions would be much appreciated. Hello, Let me preface this mail by saying: I'm an idiot. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, you don't have to say it! I have a piece of networking equipment that does not have a factory defaults button on it. it has to be RMA'd and returned to the manufacturer if you can't remember login credentials (forgot username,pass/IP, etc) I was assigning the unit an IP address of 172.20.1.x but I typod it. 127.20.1.x and as you can guess, I can't connect to the unit from any other device now. 127.x is loopback. I have tried assigning a 127.20.1.x address to an ethernet interface in a FreeBSD box, and removinging the 127.0.0.1/8 on localhost. I've also gone into the routing table, and removed all traces of routes for 127.x and finally, *tried* creating a route for 127.20.1.x to go out the ethernet interface (link #2) The problem with everything above is: no matter what ip/subnet combination I use, I get a message (when adding the route) that the network is unreachable. Then, when I try to ping the device from the fbsd box, I get ping: sendto: Can't assign requested address My question is: Is it possible in any way, to change the 127 routing to pass out my ethernet card long enough to re-ip this device? I haven't yet come up with a decent solution. SCSI disks spinning down
I have a server, running FBSD 5.4, that has six SCSI disks in it. It's primarily a fileserver for IT, and it's not access frequently, but it does get some use. Most of the time--any time it's been sitting for a while and not accessed recently--reading from the drive takes a few seconds. I presume this is because the drive has spun down due to it's idleness and the delay is because the drive is spinning up again when I access it. Is there a way to disable this? The drives are IBM Deskstar drives (DPSS-318350M), and I don't know if this feature is a feature in the SCSI subsystem somewhere on FBSD or a jumper setting on the drive or what. I'm not even sure I can turn it off so the drives don't spin down. Any ideas, anyone? While I'm definately interested in the statistical reporting, I do have one suggestion: Add a random sleep time to the update. Otherwise, the reporting server is gonna get HAMMERED once a month, assuming this project gains any kind of momentum. A random sleep timer at the beginning of the script over (for example) a 3 hour window could make the load bearable for the checkin server.Just something to consider. I've now committed v2.0 of the 300.statistics periodic script ... this one adds the device reporting that we'd talked about previously, and the summary reports now reflect the driver(s) in use for those deciding to report ... This Phase of the script is optional, and not enabled by default ... I can't think of any reason why you wouldn't want to report it, but just in case someone feels it poses a problem, its an opt-in report ... pkg-message updated to reflect the extra line you need to add to /etc/periodic.conf: monthly_statistics_report_devices=yes I've written it to report driver + chip= information from pciconf -l, since even pciconf -lv doesn't seem to use card= ... the summary report will be extended next to show both vendor and chip statistics ... Hi, I'm in the middle of configuring a repeatable jail installation with some ports - in a nutshell, I want to install from locally built packages, but if not available locally I want to build the port myself _and_ create a package for future repetition. One needing Dell drivers specifically, the other needed Dell Drivers or OS drivers. I just installed 6.1 on a Dell PowerEdge 1850 and the RAID adapter was initially set for Mass Storage mode. I read that I2O mode is a better mode, so I flipped it to I2O, and the machine booted fine. For some reason this confuses me. I would assume that my changing the emulation of the RAID Adapter would cause the machine to no longer boot. Dell vs. Silicon Mechanics vs. FreeBSD Systems
Anyone have any opinions about the quality and/or value of these respective vendors? I'm looking for something that has good AMD64 support, great RAID1 support and good Serial Console Redirection support, all obviously reasonably priced. I've had bad experiences in the past with onboard SATA and/or RAID controllers from Silicon Mechanics but it looks now like their Rackform nServ A206 uses an Adaptec SATA controller and an Adaptec RAID controller (this will do RAID1, right?) Anyone have any experience with FreeBSD Systems IPMI interface? I don't claim to know much about IPMI, so forgive me if I ask seemingly dumb questions: Is IPMI implemented entirely in userland or are is there hardware required that FreeBSD Systems just happens to include with their systems? Is IPMI really any good at the end of the day, or are there other solutions that are better/more relaibe (tm)? How does Dell fit into all of this? I haven't dealt with Dell in years but when I have in the past, there didn't seem to be any major issues. I'm looking at a Power Edge 1850 with the Embedded RAID (ROMB) - PERC4e/Si Controller. Does Dell support Serial Console Redirection without their extra lights out card? Lastly (I think) with regards to AMD64 Support (more for the Silicon Mechanics and FreeBSD Systems options), I had issues a couple of years ago with AMD64 and OpenLDAP. Something to do with Mutexes, and wound up having to backpedal and go with a 32bit install on my 64bit system. PITA. How to handle 'local' ports/packages?
Hi, Can anyone give me a tip on how to properly integrate a local package so that I don't get: pkg_delete: package x has no origin recorded errors? I've tried adding a line like: @comment ORIGIN:local/ to the +CONTENTS file for the package, but then portmanager complains that it is nonexistent and won't complete 'portmanager -s'. To make matters more awkward, this package is built from a closed-source binary distribution and thus can't be properly ported, so I can't set it up properly. What I'd like is for management tools to acknowledge its existence, yet ignore it entirely for the purposes of maintenance. For instance, I have already made it a held package under pkgtools.conf, which seems to satisfy portupgrade ok. Mike, Please don't disable the ability to run this as a non-root user. I've managed to get it to run by chowning it's config, files under /var/db and the entire ports collection to an update user. Now I can run portmanager -s and it will give me an accurate run-down of what upgrades are needed. I can also then download updates as a restricted user. Changing to root will allow me to update as I need to, and as long as the src is cleaned up, no files owned by root are left behind in the ports tree. This actually works quite nicely. portsnap, excluding parts of the ports tree
I know I can run portsnap extract sysutils/portupgrade ...or something to that effectbut that will not register say for a portsnap update after a new portsnap fetch. You must run 'portsnap extract' before running 'portsnap update'. ...is there any way I can only maintain a small portion of the ports tree while still using portsnap (or should I not bother and just use cvsup)? I'd like to keep the parts of the ports collection around that I use, but not all of it...as this box has space issues. SCSI negotiation problems, please help!
I have a tape drive that seems to have lost its ability to negotiate optimal settings. I've tried rescanning the bus; I've tried resetting the bus; I've tried powering the library/drive off, rescanning the bus to remove the devices, powering the library/drive back on, and rescanning again to find the devices again; and no matter what I do, I keep getting these 3.3 MB/s transfer rates, 8-bit bus widths, and very degraded tape performance. Short of a reboot, how do I restore the initial negotiation settings from when the server was initially powered up? And because I feel like the question is going to be asked... I think this happened when a coworker cycled power on the tape library. Is there any way to reinitialize the SCSI card and renegotiate with the attached devices? dmesg.boot and kernel config attached. Thanks! I in fact did that, I know that. But that misses the point. I think it is safe to say that most anyone would expect to be returned to the point of the install where they were at when they hit the cancel button. That is broken behavior, and the install has had these type of oddities for as long as I can remember. I was just figuring since it seems like sysinstall has grown slightly with the rest of the OS that these little things might have been caught/fixed by now. Or, you can finish the install and edit /etc/rc.conf manually...it's one line to configure a network card: ifconfig_xl0=inet 123.45.67.89 netmask 255.255.255.0 I realize thatbut the issue is that sysinstall isn’t doing what most any person would probably expect in that part of the install (if you attempt to cancel out of it that is). Sendmail is *always* installed as part of the base system, since so many programs rely on it being there. I realize that...I thought that might have changed with the option of “No MTA” in sysinstall...but I’m starting to realize what that probably means is “sendmail_enable=NONE” in /etc/rc.conf? You should install Postfix via the ports once your base system is up and running. Yes, maybe, no. There is a menu option in sysinstall...I would expect it to work. I ended up with postfix installed, but sendmail still running and no startup script for postfix (or changes to mailer.conf to enable it to start through the postfix sendmail binary). It appears No MTA worked after I chose that after seeing sendmail up and running, because it added “sendmail_enable=NONE” to rc.conf and sendmail wasn’t running after a reboot So...now when I choose “postfix” again in sysinstall, will it work this time? I guess I’ll try it when I get home tonight and see. Either way...this is most DEFINITELY “odd” behavior at the very least. If you do that, it will prompt you if you want Postfix to edit /etc/mailer.conf. At the end of the install, it gives you the exact lines you need to put in /etc/rc.conf to disable sendmail and use Postfix. I can grab it from source and install it also. No big deal. The problem is that sysinstall isn’t working as expected here. Don't be afraid of the ports collection. Ports are your friend! Gee...I wonder how I got bash on my machine after it was up and running There's no need to go back and reinstall. A matter of perspective. True...I suppose there is no *need*. I like my systems to have gone through a completely event-less install process though before moving on. Which technically means then that this install became my “dry run” (which if sysinstall had behaved as I think most people would expect, a “dry run” would be unnecessary). You should consider the installation procedure as nothing more than a means of getting all the files off the CD and onto your hard drive. From that point forward, FreeBSD is easily configured without using sysinstall. All you need to know how to do is use a keyboard. :-) *sigh* Not at all condescending eh? I’m aware of this. BUT, having options in sysinstall DOES make some things easier. Plus...what more could you ask for in a menuing system? It’s concise, straight to the point, and works in a terminal. Now if everything worked as expected, it’d be close to perfect. Sometimes menu systems are nice, sometimes they make some things easier...and depending on the system, sometimes they help you learn about some things. Have you ever seen SMIT in AIX? It has a cool option to show
FreeBSD 6.0 - install critiques - install issues
OK...I've been running FreeBSD since 4.0...and I've always noticed installation issues here and there. Mostly though, I've always been good to go after a good dry run (which I always recommend to everyone I recommend FreeBSD to) and usually on a 2nd run all the options are fine. I've pretty much ran 4.x boxes for quite awhile...dabbled with 5.x, but didn't run it on anythingbut I do believe I installed the box a couple times to get my options correct. But now I've installed 6.0 for the first time on a machine that I plan on making a production box, and I've still noticed some of the installation oddities. One big nuisance is that you cannot safely cancel out of many/some of the sysinstall options during install. During install of fxp1 (the first and only NIC I chose), I chose to let it grab a DHCP address, then cancelled out of the NIC config. Instead of dropping me back to choose another NIC, or the same NIC, the install just proceeded on, as if I'd completed my network config (I did revisit it at the end of the install, but still...esp. for a newbie, that's an unnecessary stumbling block). The one that really hit me though was the mail config. There were more mail config options than I'm used to from previous 4.x and 5.x installs, I cancelled out of it without choosing. Post-install, sendmail was running. I figured...fine...it installed a default. No big deal. So...I fired up sysinstall, navigated to: Configure Networking Mail Postfix (using FTP server as the source...didn't feel like putting in the CD). Well...it installed Postfix and it's dependencies, message popped up that it was the default MTAbut sendmail is still there, and postfix is not running (I don't see an RC script either to start it and /etc/mailer.conf is unchanged). So...I went through, and picked No MTA in sysinstall. Well...sendmail is still running, and postfix is still installed (can't say I expected removalbut the behavior for defaulting to sendmail and then going back and picking postfix later doesn't make sense). I'd like to figure out how to correct this in the base OS structure without going back and re-installing (really shouldn't have to) OR going to ports (does the postfix port still have the make replace target...that was great). Any hints? Any help would be appreciated (granted, I haven't gotten that far to where I absolutely cannot re-install...but I really shouldn't have to. If sendmail was in some kind of a pkg_db or something, I could simply remove sendmail and hopefully picking postfix as the MTA from sysinstall would install it insteadbut it doesn't appear to be like that). Thanks everyone for the help. For the archive: I went to /usr/src/contrib/ntp/ntpdate and edited ntpdate.c. I searched for 'host found' and changed the stderror to stdout. I then went to /usr/src/usr.sbin/ntp and performed a make install clean. Problem solved; the new 'host found' messages now go to stdout, just like all the other messages, so I can dump them to /dev/null, but 'host not found' error messages still show up as mail to root. I have only lately noticed this anomaly myself, and wished that it read ... a front-end tool, such as xxx In your situation, however, I'd recommend a) using portupgrade -pf for already-installed packages or b) portinstall -p and then pkg_deinstall, for packages you don't wish to install locally. Hello list I have set some environment vars in /etc/profile such as PATH QTDIR (for Qt) LD_LIBRARY_PATH etc. All variables are setup successfully except PATH that remains unchanged... I tried to setup PATH in ~/.profile and now is updated but how can I setup this variable system wide? specifically want to add the Qt and MySQL binary directories to the PATH... I would not like to make a full reinstall (otherwise I would have done that already long tme I'd suggest investigating the option of performing a binary upgrade to a supported 4.x release - this would likely present no more risk to your running system than an installworld and would almost certainly solve your problem. if this server was used by 100+ people i would of course not have such a harsh security script set up. everyone who uses it has great experience and understands the consequences. like i said before, this is usually for personal use and has about 12 users total. if this was used to manage ssh on something big i would lower the security measures. hope you can understand some now :) Certainly. However, given that you are willing to accept (risk?) 5 attempts at a legitimate account I don't believe there would be any greater risk in allowing the same for invalid accounts also, given that the likelihood of gaining access to those is actually less - and it would make your script simpler, too, whilst preventing the (albeit, unlikely in your situation) possibility of a DoS to a valid user. To be honest, reversing your logic somewhat wrt valid/invalid accounts and 1/5 attempts could have merit also. Dump/Tape block question
Sorry if this is a repeat. I posted this on the 21st and never saw it show up in the mailing list, so I'm assuming nobody ever received it. I have a question about dump and tape blocks. When I do backups, dump tells me it uses a certain number of blocks for that particular backup. I explicitly set my block size to 65K when I do a dump. When I read the SCSI or hardware block location on the tape after the dump, it's nowhere near the same number as what dump said it used. How big is each block? Dump/Tape blocks question
I have a question about dump and tape blocks. When I do backups, dump tells me it uses a certain number of blocks for that particular backup. I explicitly set my block size to 65K when I do a dump. When I read the SCSI or hardware block location on the tape after the dump, it's nowhere near the same number as what dump said it used. How big is each block?
