Re: Install problem to external usb hard drive

2008-04-25 Thread Steve P.
 Gary,

I can report that I was able to do my install using the
7.0-STABLE-200804-i386-disc1.iso file. The system booted as expected so I
was happy!

To summarize, I booted cd, installed to the external usb hard drive,
rebooted pc, and started fbsd on the external usb drive.

I have not done much poking around yet, but it did boot.

Thank.
Steve.

Yes, the same driver (umass) is involved in attaching either. If you
already have an installation, try my instructions. It sounds like it
might just be easier to install from the BTXTEST disk though.

1. How do you install fbsd to an external usb hard drive leaving

zgv fails to build from ports, something about a security problem from
vuxml.freebsd. A similar thing happens with pkg_add -r zgv, or file not
found.

man ports talks about DISABLE_VULNERABILITIES.

Is this a way I can build it from the port? Could someone give an

Alternatively, is there another jpg console viewer?

Subject: Re: two slices, copy one slice to another?

Is there a trick to copying one working system from a slice to another slice?

What I envision is two slices:
 /dev/ad0s1 - one complete install
/dev/ad0s2 - copy of first install, via dump restore. (Is
 this where I screwed up?)

Jerry--No, dump/restore is the thing to use.
Jerry--Was the second slice /dev/ad0s2 made bootable - when you laid down
Jerry--the partitions?

I used sysinstall to lay down the partitions, then did a minimal install, so it
was bootable I would assume.

I tried this, but upon reboot, I could see both installs. I was given a
choice of the two, but F2 only booted the first install.
 What is the trick?

Jerry--The problem is probably that you copied it directly including /etc/fstab.
Jerry--So, /etc/fstab still points to /dev/ad0s1a at the root (/) partition
Jerry--and /dev/ad0s1b as swap, etc, etc Those need to be manually edited
Jerry--after the dump/restore to be /dev/ad0s2a, /dev/ad0s2b, etc respectively.

Now that I think about it, yeah. fstab still points to the former slice. Funny
how the obvious eludes you ad 2am.
I will try that, and Thanks Very Much.
Steve.

tribulations and success : copy from one drive to another.

2006-03-13 Thread Steve P.

Greetings fbsders,

I wanted to clone my regular install (source) to a fresh disk (target).
Source and target different size drives, but target big enough.

What I tried:
1. booted the 6.0 386 iso 1 cd with the target drive as the only hd in
the system.
2. put a minimal install there. I wanted to get the slices and
partitions right. Minimal install takes 2 min.
3. put the source drive back on the ata cable as master, and the target
as source.
4. pc would not reboot, even messing with the jumpers, got tired and
lazy, aborted. I was going to dump restore from source to target across
ata drives but no luck.

Next, put the target on a usb cable, so it was read as da0. Source read
as ad0 back on the ata cable.
1. booted the cd as above and re-installed to target again, minimal
install. Now, source and target have the same disklabels.
2. using dump and restore, put the source files onto the target,
mounting the target on the source /mnt. Got some odd warnings and maybe
errors.
3. shutdown, removed source ata drive, leaving usb connected.
4. attempted usb boot. Of course not!
5. removed target drive from usb and put back on ata cable.
6. rebooted and ge golly gosh it worked. dmesg looks clean.

All this so I can test things before I mess with my prod system
(source disk).

I will do this again just to make sure I have it down.

Thanks for listening.

Re: disklabel messup.

2006-03-11 Thread Steve P.
Illoai,

You were right. There is nothing wrong.

Part of my problem was that I had never had or seen anything on other slices.
Now I have two fbsd installs, ad0s1 and ad02 and I mistook ad0s2's missing info
as applying to ad0s1.

What I really want to do is use ad0s1 as my production install and ad0s2 as my
test install. I guess my procedure would be to copy prod to test, then perform
any testing for new ports, etc. Then once tested, perform those same actions on
ad0s1.

I have been reading up on how to clone a disk, so I can boot into a copy.
Seems like some say tar can do it, but I have seen a place that said to only
use dump. Oh, well. I am not quite there yet, working on baby steps.

If /etc/fstab shows them correctly still

should be, I'm pretty sure that running
sysinstall again will show the slices and
partitions correctly. I would advise that
'bsdlabel /dev/ad0' will show you your
label just as effectively, and that df(1)
is probably the correct method of gazing
in rapture at your mounted partitions.

Other commands to read up on might
be fdisk and diskinfo.

Good luck.

disklabel messup.

2006-03-10 Thread Steve P.
I was using sysinstall's disklabel facility to poke around. I
accidentally did Undo on my installed 6.0 working slice.

Now, the mount points for my partitions fail to appear, even though I did
not write them. I just exited sysinstall.

The odd thing is that the system shows no adverse effects even on
shutdown reboot. I guess /etc/fstab provides the info to reboot.

What is the best way to get the mount points, etc back so
sysinstall/disklabel shows them correctly?

Would I use the disklabel command directly to reconstruct?

Thanks.

Best practises in maintaining a small system

2006-03-07 Thread Steve P.
Greetings, I want to learn how to maintain a small server environment,
focusing on installation and maintanance of kernel and software. My scope
in this exercise is limited to a small ftp server in a production
environment. I believe this means I want to track security branch. What
I imagine is having two boxes: test and production. But for this
exercise, the two systems will really be one or two disk drives I can
swap out of one box. I don't want to consider users in this exercise. I
am not looking for a cookbook explanation, but just tips and/or
references to other doc to make this work. I have read the handbook
nearly cover to cover, and have a well read copy of Complete Fbsd. Please
make ref's to any of these or other doc. While I am a newbie, I have used
these tools somewhat effectively: cvsup and supfiles, pkg_add,
portupgrade, portsnap, portaudit, freebsd-update, built ports using make,
config'ed and built kernels. System Installation:1. Using ISO 1 of the
Fbsd 386 Release 6.0 CD, install the developer distribution. a. The
screen says full sources, does this mean kernel and base sources? b. I
am confused about userland. Is userland everything you install, plus
ports, except the kernel? c. Should I slice my drive and partition it at
this point for the test environment? 2. Configure networking, add users,
etc and finish initial installation, verify system runs and has
connectivity. 3. Should I stop here to update any software that has been
added to this point? a. I know from working with freebsd-update that
there are security fixes for the kernel. What is best practise to get the
kernel secure again? On one of my present boxes, I had used sysintall
to populate /usr/src/sys (I think) with kernel sources. Would I do this
now? I have only used the traditional method of cd
/usr/src/sys/i386/compile/TESTKERNEL, then make depend install etc. b.
What is the procedure at this point to get userland right? (Assuming
userland is all but kernel) c. Where does cvsup's src/all come into this?
4. Use portsnap fetch/extract to get /usr/ports to make install clean the
very few ports that would be needed on this ftp server. Post installation
1. Mount the test hard drive and copy production to test. a. Are there
any tips on the best way to copy drives? I want to be able to boot the
test system just like the production system to test updates, etc. 2. Now,
using the test environment, what is the best procedure to keep abreast of
kernel and userland issues? 3. What is the procedure to recompile my
system to keep the kernel and userland up to date? I realize that this
process is usually contrained by don't fix what ain't broken, and the
need to keep the server up nearly 24/7. I hope this is not too much to
bite off in one email. If so, I will still appreciate any tips. Best
Regards,Steve.

How to upgrade portsnap in freebsd 6.0?

2006-02-26 Thread Steve P.
I am attemping to upgrade my portsnap program as a result of this:

$ pkg_version -v | grep portsnap
portsnap-0.9.4 needs updating (port has 1.0)

When I attempt to upgrade via portupgrade, I get this:

# portupgrade portsnap
/usr/local/etc/pkgtools.conf:213: warning: already initialized constant
HOLD_PKG S
** Port marked as IGNORE: sysutils/portsnap:
portsnap now contained in the base system

I would appreciate info on how to upgrade this item.
Thanks.
Steve.

Re: How to upgrade portsnap in freebsd 6.0?

2006-02-26 Thread Steve P.
pkg_delete worked, as confirmed by pkg_version does not show it anymore.

However, when I attempt to make install it from ports, I get this:

# make install
=== portsnap-1.0 portsnap now contained in the base system.
*** Error code 1

Any idea?

It's now contained in the base system, so the correct way to upgrade
 it is to use pkg_delete.

Reread what Kris replied, especially the part that says: It's now
contained in the base system, then read the message from when you try
to make from the ports system: === portsnap-1.0 now contained in the
base system. What that all means is that since you deinstalled the
port, you are done. Finished. Nothing more to do. Nothing tricky
 needed. Just use portsnap v1.0

portupgrading only certain ports

2006-02-22 Thread Steve P.
I am trying to avoid upgrading two ports: kde and X.

What are the command line options to portupgrade to accomplish this?

For instance, I tried this and it failed:
#portupgrade -a -x 'kde*' -x 'x*'

Where am I going wrong?

I've read the pertinent handbook ports section, and did man portupgrade, but
still I can not get it to work. Maybe it has something to do with pkg_glob, I
don't know.

Any help appreciated.
Steve.

Peter,

Apparently it was the quotes!

Upgrade appears to be working right.
Thanks.

I never tried this feature but from the man page it seems you do not need
the single quotes. You probably can also just type the package names
(with no glob characters) with or without version numbers.

PC-BSD is based on FreeBSD, but is easier to install. Maybe demo that.
