Re: Xorg mouse problems

2005-03-28 Thread Thomas Foster
I had similar issues with Xorg and moused on an Apex Outlook KVM. I sumply
disabled moused.. and just use the device section6 of my Xorg.conf to enable
the mouse. You could also try compiling the kernel with device hints and
add

hint.psm.0.flags="0x100"
to your hint file

Subject: Xorg mouse problems

Hi all,
I've got a PS/2 Labtech optical mouse with and Xorg 6.8.2 running on
FreeBSD 5.4PR with an AMD Athlon and a GeForce 2 MX and I'm having
some strange problems with Xorg and moused. This all worked fine
under NetBSD (1.6.x and 2.0) with the wsmouse driver, but strangely,
now when I use Xorg and/or moused on FreeBSD the mouse skips on
verticle or horizontal movement all the way across the screen. I've
tried changing the resolution, disabling ACPI, using different
protocols and nothing has resolved the problem. Has anyone
experienced this before and if so, how have they resolved it?

Re: more problems with 5.3 and "TIMEOUT - WRITE_DMA"

2005-03-27 Thread Thomas Foster
I had this same issue on an older AMD Nforce board. 5.2.1 seemed to install
and run.. but moving to 5.3 gave me issues. I tinkered with the DMA
settings in the BIOS.. to no avail. The Geometry seemed to be off on the
drive I noticed (IBM deskstar) when I newfs'd it.. so I changed out drives..
but never got it working.. I eventually just dropped Gentoo on it.

What chipset, drive controller hard drive are you using on this system?

I got this annoying problem when upgradeing to 5.3, the miniinst iso
blurps out "TIMEOUT - WRITE_DMA" when it starts writing base to my
disk. And when I tried to first install 5.2.1 and upgrade (cvsup, make
buildworld etc.. ) to 5.3 that way everything seems fine until I
reboot to single-user-mode, as soon as Im starting to write anything
to the disk it´s blurping out those errors.. I have diagnosticed my
disk, checked my cabling and fixed my PSU (installed a brand new one).
No difference. I noticed that my ide-controller was supported in 4.11,
but not? in 5.3, is that realy true? seems very strange...
Sence I duel boot with Wintendo/Lunix and don´t see this problem with
those oses I´m very confused of what to do next..
I´ll tried some snapshots to but no luck...

ps My dmesg goes in the attachment, in hope for a patch/solution to

Re: inetd vs standalone daemon

2005-03-27 Thread Thomas Foster
Im still confused as to your questions.. again.. most of these are answered
by a simple glance at the FreeBSD handbook:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/network-inetd.html
If you want to remove the inetd binary from your system .. go for it...
There are those who still use it as a wrapper for other services... such at
identd (auth) or even finger

As far as removing it from sources.. you could try to "pull a freebsd source
developers leg" but I assume you wont get very far..

The Fed-Ex metaphor is interesting but not really relevent to all services
wrapped in inetd..

slow performance are you seeing? Are internal LAN clients having issues

It's been discussed in the ports list. You can just wait for it to be
fixed, but if you are in a hurry setting:
WITHOUT_MOZILLA=YES
should make it work.
Didn't work for me yesterday. However, I was able to install the

Oh, quit your whining. The Beastie mascot isn't going to go away.
It got its start because someone (Kirk) enjoyed drawing it and used
it on some stuff and people enjoyed. it.
Wrong. Use of the devil image for the logo for BSD and UNIX
predates Kirk.
If someone comes up with some nice looking graphic that makes a
good official logo and the FreeBSD Foundation buys it, then they
will have an official logo, owned by FreeBSD. So what. Gee,
maybe Kirk McKusick will design it.Anyway, a mascot isn't a logo
so the mascot isn't threatened.
Wrong. Beastie has always been the logo. It is one of the hallmarks of
the anti-beastie campaign that the anti-beastie people are now claiming
that
beastie was never the logo.
Who claims that Beastie was never the logo?
Who cares? Will the logo affect the OS? If not .. Im happy :-)

Re: Data Recovery

2005-03-17 Thread Thomas Foster
I hope that you have remounted this filesystem read-only .. or else you
might not be able to recover anything. That might be one of the problems
you are running into.

Sleuthkit allows you to search inodes and fragment ranges of a device for
particular file and directory names.. then images that inode or fragment
range into a single image file elsewhere on the system.

Foremost will then open that image file and extract files based on their
header and footer information, but.. if you do not include footer
information you might get truncated file recovery. Also.. as stated
before.. if there have been multiple writes to the file system.. you
probably wont get the file back at all.

Hope this helps..

Are there any ways to recover files from rm -rf dirname after a few days,
assuming there have been few if any writes to the filesystem since?

I've been playing with tools like foremost and jpegrescue a bit... and
running tests on other filesystems, but it doesn't appear that I'm getting
full images back from the disk. Looking at an octal dump of a disk image
(dd if=/dev/blah of=/some/file), I can find the file header... and about
20k of the file, generally... and then there's garbage. Presumably the
file's been broken into blocks and there's inode table data to consider...

The tests I"m running are trying to find jpeg files that HAVEN'T been
deleted from the filesystem. My real scenario of course differs.

Pointers/rtfm welcome.

Re: Question about install. (two hard drives, install freebsd on second)

2005-03-16 Thread Thomas Foster
You can install FreeBSD indepedently on its own drive while another OS
coexists on a previous drive in your system. You would most likely want to
use an alternate bootloader installed on the mater boot record of the first
drive.. such as GAG or Grub.. but the FreeBSD bootloader works just as
well..

If you decide later to remove the second drive with the FreeBSD installaion
on it, you can simply replace the original Microsoft bootloader by running
an fdisk on the master boot record

Also, a 2 gig drive is going to be very limiting in what you can install and
run on your system.. but.. good luck to you and happy BSD'ing

then nothing. ibm is saying this can be caused by the actual net driver
(the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) shares the network interface);
we're using a Broadcom BCM5704C Dual gig adapter:

bge0: mem
0xfe00-0xfe00,0xfe01-0xfe01 irq 24 at device 1.0 on pci2

anyone have any idea why this may be the case? unfortunately for me and
others, the inability to remotely manage boxes (console/power cycle/detect
drive failures/etc) via will be a deal breaker in our push for FBSD in our
fleet (couple hundred) of dual proc amd64 IBM e325 servers. SuSe here we
come (unwillingly)...

Subject: sharing a DSL connection using FreeBSD-5.3

hello every one!
i have a freebsd machine which i want to use to share my DSL
connection to a LAN. basically, i have tested my FreeBSD-4.10 to
connect to my DSL provider which gave me a static IP address. using a
setup with one LAN card and correctly setup IP address & settings, I
was able to access the Internet painlessly. now, i bought a new LAN
card which I will connect to my LAN switch. the old LAN card will be
my interface to the WAN (DSL provider). i haven't done anything to
share the Internet coz I want to have an idea from you on what are the
next steps in confguring my FreeBSD to share Internet. i will first
upgrade my OS to FreeBSD-5.3 which is the latest stable version of
FreeBSD.
here's my ifconfig which shows that my newly installed card is
recognized together with my working LAN card which is currently
connected to my DSL internet provider.
%ifconfig
rl0: flags=8802 mtu 1500
   ether 00:11:95:26:4e:58
   media: Ethernet autoselect (10baseT/UTP)
   status: no carrier
dc0: flags=8843 mtu 1500
   inet 210.125.155.126 netmask 0xff00 broadcast 210.125.155.255
   inet6 fe80::280:adff:fe00:572c%dc0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x2
   ether 00:80:ad:00:57:2c
   media: Ethernet autoselect (100baseTX )
   status: active
lp0: flags=8810 mtu 1500
lo0: flags=8049 mtu 16384
   inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128
   inet6 fe80::1%lo0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x4
   inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff00
ppp0: flags=8010 mtu 1500
sl0: flags=c010 mtu 552
according to some FreeBSD documentations, i need to configure my
machine as a gateway and use NAT. others also say about using a
firewall. im concerned on the ease of maintaining the FreeBSD as a DSL
router. im also concerned on filtered ports or port forwarding which
may block certain ports such as Yahoo messenger and online games. if i
use FreeBSD+NAT+firewall, would Windows clients that runs on specific
ports (i.e. YM and online games) still be able to work? before, i used
WinRoute and WinGate but there are instances when I can't get to work
certain applications due to the limitations of the gateway.
does anyone here can show me the steps I need to follow to be able to
setup a FreeBSD-based DSL internet sharing server which is easy to
maintain, fast and secured?
thank you very much!

I love FreeBSD!

Hello
I am have problems getting php4 to work with apache2. I have these working
on
another FreeBSD 4.10 server but I can not get it working on my 5.3 server.
When I try to load a php page with my web browser it just ask me if I want
to
download the php file.

Here is what I have done to configure and install:
installed
apache-2.0.53
php4-4.3.10_2
php4-extensions-1.0
edited /etc/rc.conf
apache2_enable="YES"
/usr/local/etc/apache2/httpd.conf
LoadModule php4_modulelibexec/apache2/libphp4.so
AddType application/x-http-php .php
AddType application/x-http-php-source .phps
copied php.ini-recommended to php.ini
edited php.ini
include_path = ".:/php/includes"
include_path ="/usr/local/share/pear"
I have reloaded all the application and rebooted the computer. I have read
the
php manual, I believe I have followed all the steps in the pkg-message
files
and tried google but I can not find the answer. I am sorry for asking such
a
basic question which is probably documented somewhere.

Does FreeBSD support 128bit WEP? I have a Atheros based card and would
like to connect to an ap that is using 128bit WEP. When I try to
connect using the 128bit wep key ifconfig says I am using a 104bit key

Speaking of which I have not been able to find a list of reasons so I

P.S. I know WEP is lame, and do not need 50 emails in response to this

Ok. I admit it. I cant figure what I am missing.
I have 2 NICs in this machine.
NIC 1 is a LAN NIC and static IP. - that I can figure out.
NIC 2 needs to be DHCP (from cable modem).
and I want the default router to be the DHCP cable
modem gateway IP (passed from dhclient).
What do I need to setup in /etc/rc.conf
to make this happen?
Thanks and sorry for the dumb question.

Re: where is autoconf

Did you install any of these ports of autoconf?
Remember the ports tree is a skeleton of potential applications you can
install, they are not the actual installed apps themselves.. be sure and
read the Ports/Packages section of the handbook :

What are you attempting to install that requires autoconf?
Currently, I am running autoconf-2.59_2 which seems to do the trick.

UFS2 File System Recovery

I have done quite a bit of searching on the subject and seem to be coming back
to the same conclusion.

I recently accidentally removed a symlink recursively in a sleep deprived
stupor and lost an entire directory of personal music projects. Being that I
had not performed backups for that day, the files inquestion were not written
to the taped drive yet, and I was curious.. since the ffsrecov port has been
broken for some time.. what my options are of trying to recover these files.

I immediately unmounted the disk in question and now am in the process of
trying to find the solution.

Any suggestions are appreciated.. thank you

If you leave your configuration as is, you can install FreeBSD on the other

I personally use the GAG bootloader and find that it suits my needs.

Can I install fbsd (5.2) and set up dual booting from where I'm at now? Or
should I install win 98 after fbsd? Also will I need to dedicate an entire
4 or 6 gb ide to win 98? A quarter gb would be plenty for my intended use

Hi all-
I have been searching high and low for a straightforward VPN configuration
HOWTO with no luck. everything i've found is way over my head and very
convoluted (to me, at least). Perhaps such is the nature of VPN.

My goal is simply to allow users running Windows to VPN in to my home
server and gain access to the private LAN. Sure, i can get in via ssh, but
i have several less technical users who need to access to shared resources
and for them, ssh is not a realistic solution. I've heard that OpenVPN is
a bit simpler to set up, but it too is a complicated matter. All of the
examples i've seen/googled involve unix<->unix machines.

I'm tracking 5.3-STABLE with pf controlling traffic.
Can anyone point me in a good direction?
Thanks in advance,

I just got done installing Horde/IMP and I hate to tell you but
php.ini doesen't even exist. From the looks of it the ports people
got together and worked out an alternative way of specifying variables
for php instead of using php.ini. Probably to avoid the problems
that you mentioned of ports overwriting php files.
so what is this alternative way? i have to include some other paths...

Thomas (and John too),
Let me clarify a little bit.
What I have is this:
A single FreeBSD web server with a single NIC in it
Two T1 routers, each with a different subnet.
My FreeBSD box has two IP addresses assigned to it, one from the first
subnet and one from the second subnet.
I want to use round-robin DNS to direct half my web traffic to the first
IP and half to the second IP.
As I said to John in a private e-mail earlier this morning, I have a
Windows 2000 box that is doing exactly this with these two subnets right
now. I know it "can" be done. I have a feeling that the FreeBSD TCP
stack lacks the capability. By the way, this also works with Cisco
hardware. I have used Cisco equipment in this same configuration in the
past.
I think they way it SHOULD work is that you should be able to give a
FreeBSD box multiple default gateways. When FreeBSD gets a packet to an
IP on the first subnet, it should use the default gateway that is also
on that subnet. When FreeBSD gets a packet to an IP on the second
subnet, it should use the second default gateway. This seems to be the
logic that Windows (and Cisco) uses.

Hi Tim..
If you have multiple interfaces and you configure a default gateway for
each
interface, the default metric determination that is based on the speed
of
the interface usually uses the fastest interface for default gateway
traffic. This is usually desirable in configurations in which the
computer
is connected to the same network.

This behavior can become a problem when the computer exists on two or
more
disjointed networks (networks that do not provide symmetric reachability
on
layer3). Symmetric reachability exists when packets can be sent to and
received from an arbitrary destination.

Because the TCP/IP version4 protocol uses a single default route in
FreeBSD's routing table at any one time for default route traffic,
default
routers configured on multiple interfaces connected to two or more
disjointed networks can wreak routing traffic havoc.

In FreeBSD, you can manually configure the routing table for the
individual
interfaces.. but it sounds to me as if you are attempting to use two
ethernet interfaces connected to two disjointed networks connected to
routers with two seperate subnets in order to balance http requests to
one
server.. is this the case? I guess I am not fully understanding your
configuration ...

Thomas,
No, I'm not using this box as a router. It is a web server, and I
need
to spread the load of my web traffic across two separate T1s.
I can't just add routes. You need a default route, or parts of the
internet would become inaccessible. In my case, you need TWO default
routes. I have set up Cisco equipment and Windows workstations with
two
default routes in the past, and it has worked. In fact, I have one
Windows box right now that is configured on both these networks with
two
default gateways, and it is working.
There has to be a way to make it work on FreeBSD.

Subject: Routing Problem

I am having a problem setting up a multi-homed host. I have two
separate T1 internet connections, and one physical NIC in my FreeBSD
box. The two networks are as follows:
Connection 1:
LAN Address: 1.2.3.24/25
Router Address: 1.2.3.1
Connection 2:
LAN Address: 4.5.6.106/29
Router Address: 4.5.6.105
I would like to set up my FreeBSD box so that I can connect to either
LAN address from the outside world. The problem is that I cannot
specify two default gateways. Right now, I have 1.2.3.1 set up as a
default gateway, and I can get to the 1.2.3.24 IP from the outside
world. However, I can't get to 4.5.6.106. I can't even ping it.
From
the FreeBSD box, I can ping 4.5.6.105, and from the outside world I
can
ping 4.5.6.105, but I can't ping 4.5.6.106 from the outside world.
Is there any way to make this work? How can I make FreeBSD have two
default gateways? I read somewhere about being able to set up source
routing, but I haven't been able to find any HOWTO's about that.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

How many named binaries do you find on your system?

The named process is always in the kserel state. I've got no idea
what that is, and all I can find on Google is that programs hang in
that state. So I don't know what to do. There's no output, I can't
find any logs, there's just no way for me to tell what's wrong.

Is there something similar for FreeBSD?

Right. You installed it directly into your kernel,

OK, I got it working. Sort of. With some offline help from Thomas Foster
(with Thanks).

I deinstalled and reinstalled mDNSResponder.
That port now puts a file mdns.sh in /usr/local/etc/rc.d which starts
mdnsd -- whatever that is.

I created a new file mDNSResponder.sh which contains the mdns.sh script
from http://www.section6.net/help/daapd.php. I set up everything else as
detailed there.

I rebooted.
And I am able to see the server from iTunes on my mac.
However, most of the songs have neither artist or any other tag and the
time field says Continuous.

How do I fix that?
And does anyone know what all these versions of mdns are?
Alan

Re: removing php4 in order to install php5-pear

2005-01-26 Thread Thomas Foster
Are you wanting PHP4 or PHP5?
Try pkg_delete of PHP5-PEAR, and then make distclean for PHP4-extensions..
and then make config to install what extensions you want then.. make and
make install them..

I believe the current build of both PHP4 and PHP5 installs the CLI as well
as the Apache module..
As long as you have the mime.types and module loading from your apache
conf.. you should be good to go.. just restart apache..

Hope this helps

thanks T that did the trick of installing. I guess I can't get the order
correct or something because now I can't go back in install mod_php4;

Stop in /usr/ports/www/mod_php4.
do I not have to install mod_php4 to get apache support? just modifying
the httpd.conf doesn't do the trick.

i noticed doing pkg_info returns;
php4-4.3.9 PHP Scripting Language (Apache Module and CLI)
php4-pcre-4.3.9 The pcre shared extension for php
php4-xml-4.3.9 The xml shared extension for php
php5-pear-5.0.2 PEAR framework for PHP
should php4-4.3.9 be installed as part of the php5-pear?
i obviously do not have the order right to install
apache13
mod_php(?)
php(?)-extensions
mysql323-server
and phpbb
anyone have any insight as to what could be the right combination to get
these to play nice?

I installed apache13 mod_php4, php4-extensions and

and I need it so hey let's do it! I 'make install' and BANG:

php5-pear problem so i deinstalled all 'php' packages and tried again.
however i still get:

===>Verifying install for pear in /usr/ports/devel/php5-pear
This port requires the CLI or the CGI version of PHP, but you have
already installed a conflicting PHP port without them.
*** Error code 1
when type 'make install' in devel/php5-pear.
how can I rip out php4 and get an install of php5-pear on the machine?
there has to be an easy way to do this.

thanks in advance,

I found the application avast + dazuko.
I believe the latter is an optional part of:

I am trying to get mDNSResponder and daapd running on my FreeBSD 5.3
server.

I tried the instructions in this previous post.
http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-questions/2005-January/
070463.html

There seem to be three (or four or five?) ports that refer to mDNS.
1. mdnsd
2. mDNSResponder
3. p5-Net-Rendezvous
there are also
4. Howl
5. gmdns
On the advice of the post mentioned above, I installed p5-Net-Rendezvous
but then looked in vain for
/usr/local/bin/mDNSResponder

So which should I use and how do I configure it?

I dont see your name server listed for your domain in the WHOIS database..
are you wanting to use homelinux.net as your DNS server? what is the
address of your DNS server.. also.. I agree.. check with your ISP to see if
they are blocking UDP port 53

The Registry database contains ONLY .COM, .NET, .EDU domains and
Registrars.

If you have a domain, you must setup at least two different DNS
servers. Both must be on physically different networks. Are you
sure that the domain is set up properly? I could dig from here,
but since you didn't specify the domain...

How long since you redirected the nameserver records from your
registrar account? It can take up to 72 hours for the changes to
propagate, depending on the TLD. Some TLD propagate changes much
faster now, but it can still takes many hours all DNS caches to
expire old stuff.

Running a DNS server from an ADSL link is not recommended.
Are you sure that your ISP is not blocking port 53 to your
fixed address? And are you sure that your DNS server is actually
listening on the public interface at all (if you have a multi-homed
host) a.k.a does sockstat -46l show something like *:53?

I am not quite sure of your name server setup, or even your registrant for
your domain name.. but I do have a few questions

Is this DNS server behind a firewall?
Is this DNS server master for your zone?
What is your zone name?
Does your Domian registration include this server as primary for your domain
name?

Subject: Help Please ... Question on cvsupit

Hello,
I have been trying for the last few days to figure out how to update
the ports collection via the cvsup process. I have two different books on
FreeBSD version 5.x and both say to use this "cvsupit" program but I
cannot
find it any where. I have FreeBSD release 5.3 install and created a user
account that I can "su" in. I would like to be able to update the ports
collections and FreeBSD source so that I can custom compile various ports
and FreeBSD. Does any one have any idea where the "cvsupit" program is. I
have tired installing "cvsup-16.1h" and "cvsup-without-gui" via both
pkg_add, sysinstall, and the ports make/install process but I still cannot
find this "cvsupit" program.

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? I am still learning FreeBSD so I
probably missing something simple some where?
Thanks for your help,
Andrew
