Now, Now, I never expected to see sarcasm on this list:-)

As far as I remember, this post wasn't the only incidence of SPAM that
day, and so I'd have to agree with you. Until the Mods find a way to
filter most spam (the list will perhaps forgive the odd oversight),
people will call for more and more draconian measures that will not be
really effective.

One way is to make the list a members list where the members have to
agree to a Code of Conduct or the Mods COULD bar them from
participating, but it not the only way Lets have a non-heated
debate about ways to reduce SPAM on the list in order to get some
consensus, then put any proposal to all the existing list members.

In other words, lets have some democracy when dealing with these thorny
issues.

Re: ssh X11 forwarding not working on FreeBSD 6.2 (SOLVED)

2007-07-26 Thread Terry Todd

The cause of this problem,

$ xhost
Xlib: connection to "localhost:10.0" refused by server
Xlib: PuTTY X11 proxy: wrong authentication protocol attempted
xhost: unable to open display "localhost:10.0"

was that the hostname on the FreeBSD system was blank. Once I set
the hostname it works fine. In fact you don't even need to turn
on any of the options in the sshd_config or ssh_config files.

Who woulda thunk it. I figured it out by trying it on 2 other
FreeBSD systems that did work and comparing how they worked to the
one that didn't.

Try it on your systems and I'll bet you see the same thing.

Micahel,

Well, actually I did not get anything working at all that I set
out to try and get working. I set out to try and get X11 forwarding
working but still have not accomplished it.

Any setting of the DISPLAY variable either manually or from PuTTY
to anything other than what ssh sets it to bypasses encryption
provided by ssh and doesn't solve the problem.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Re: ssh X11 forwarding not working on FreeBSD 6.2

2007-07-25 Thread Terry Todd

I made a mistake in my last post.

SSH X11 forwarding sets the DISPLAY variable to something like:
localhost:10.0

It should not be the address of the Windows box because that bypasses
X11 forwarding.

Michael,

Thanks for the directions. Using your method does work. However
your method bypasses X11 forwarding.

What I want to get working is X11 forwarding where you don't set
the DISPLAY variable explicitly. With X11 forwarding the DISPLAY
variable is automatically set to something like,
[IP address of Windows box]:0.0.

Re: ssh X11 forwarding not working on FreeBSD 6.2

2007-07-24 Thread Terry Todd

Lowell,

The default sshd_config file does not have XAuthLocation defined.

I have not done any updates to X.org so the default location for
xauth is /usr/X11R6/bin/xauth.

So, I added the line:
XAuthLocation /usr/X11R6/bin/xauth
to /etc/ssh/sshd_config
restarted sshd
Tested it out and same problem.

BTW - the sshd_config file on FC6 does not have this line either
and it works.

I increased sshd logging to -d3. No more messages came up in the
log file than before.

I am using PuTTY to connect to the FreeBSD system and the other
systems. The other systems all work. FreeBSD X11 forwarding does
not work. It is an off the shelf standard install of 6.2.

Manually setting the DISPLAY variable on the FreeBSD system to
[IP address of Widows XP system]:0.0 will allow it to work but
that's not what I want to do here. I want it to automatically
forward the X11 session through ssh like it does when connecting
to the FC6 system.

OK, I tried that. No difference.

Here's what heppened on the FreeBSD 6.2 system:
$
$ echo $DISPLAY
localhost:1.0

$ xterm
Xlib: connection to "localhost:1.0" refused by server
Xlib: PuTTY X11 proxy: wrong authentication protocol attempted
xterm Xt error: Can't open display: localhost:1.0
$

Here's what happens on the FC6 system:
$ echo $DISPLAY
localhost:13.0
$
$ xhost
access control disabled, clients can connect from any host
INET:terry-pc.egizone.com

ssh X11 forwarding not working on FreeBSD 6.2

2007-07-24 Thread Terry Todd
I have installed Xming successfully on a Windows XP system.
It works OK to a FC6 system and an older UNIXware system.

However when trying to connect to a FreeBSD 6.2 system with PuTTY
ssh it doesn't work. PuTTY has Enable X11 forwarding checked.

Here's what I get:

$
$ xhost
Xlib: connection to "localhost:10.0" refused by server
Xlib: PuTTY X11 proxy: wrong authentication protocol attempted
xhost: unable to open display "localhost:10.0"
$

What can be wrong?

I have ssh configured as follows:
# grep X11 /etc/ssh/*
/etc/ssh/ssh_config:ForwardX11 yes
/etc/ssh/ssh_config:ForwardX11Trusted yes
/etc/ssh/sshd_config:X11Forwarding yes
/etc/ssh/sshd_config:X11DisplayOffset 10
/etc/ssh/sshd_config:X11UseLocalhost yes

To summarize.

adding both lines:
options IPFIREWALL
options IPFIREWALL_FORWARD

works

adding just the one line:
options IPFIREWALL_FORWARD

does not work.

Thanks, very much.

Re: ipfw fwd not working in 6.2-release

2007-04-05 Thread Terry Todd

I tried this on a second machine and it does the same thing.

ipfw: getsockopt(IP_FW_ADD): Invalid argument

Could someone try running this on a 6.2-RELEASE system and tell me what you get:

# ipfw add forward 127.0.0.1,3128 tcp from not me to any 80 in via [interface
device]

Thanks,

ipfw fwd not working in 6.2-release

2007-04-03 Thread Terry Todd

I have tried to get ipfw fwd to work in 6.2-release but it always barfs.

I have recompiled and installed a custom kernel with
options IPFIREWALL_FORWARD

and I have added to the /etc/sysctl.conf file:
net.inet.ip.forwarding=1

Here's the rule that I'm trying to get to work.

$fwcmd add forward 127.0.0.1,3128 tcp from not me to any 80 in via ${iif}

When I run it I get:

ipfw: getsockopt(IP_FW_ADD): Invalid argument

All the other rules I have work fine.

Am I doing something wrong here?

Anyone else see this behaviour?

TIA,
Terry Todd

ssh authorized_keys AND opie

2007-03-16 Thread Terry Todd
FreeBSD 6.2 ssh question:

Is there a way to have sshd prompt for the authorized_keys passphrase
and then also go on to require an opie password as well to authenticate
the user?

If so how would it be configured to work this way?

I can make it do one or the other but haven't figured out how to
make it do both.

TIA,
Terry Todd

Re: phpMyAdmin httpd segmentation fault

2007-02-15 Thread Terry Todd

I have built a third system with phpMyAdmin, php5, mysql and apache (all the
same versions
as the previous two systems). phpMyAdmin works on this third system.

Comparing the extensions in the two systems that seg fault httpd and the one
that works:

/usr/local/etc/php/extensions.ini from working system
extension=mysql.so
extension=pcre.so
extension=session.so
extension=bz2.so
extension=gd.so
extension=openssl.so
extension=pdf.so
extension=zlib.so
extension=mcrypt.so
extension=mbstring.so
extension=xml.so

/usr/local/etc/php/extensions.ini from not working systems
extension=sqlite.so
extension=mysql.so
extension=pcre.so
extension=session.so
extension=bz2.so
extension=gd.so
extension=openssl.so
extension=pdf.so
extension=zlib.so
extension=mcrypt.so
extension=mbstring.so
extension=mysqli.so
extension=bcmath.so
extension=calendar.so
extension=ctype.so
extension=curl.so
extension=dom.so
extension=exif.so
extension=fileinfo.so
extension=filepro.so
extension=fribidi.so
extension=ftp.so
extension=gettext.so
extension=gmp.so
extension=iconv.so
extension=imap.so
extension=mhash.so
extension=ming.so
extension=ncurses.so
extension=odbc.so
extension=panda.so
extension=pcntl.so
extension=pdo.so
extension=posix.so
extension=pspell.so
extension=readline.so
extension=recode.so
extension=shmop.so
extension=simplexml.so
extension=soap.so
extension=sockets.so
extension=tokenizer.so
extension=xml.so
extension=xmlreader.so
extension=xmlwriter.so
extension=zip.so
extension=wddx.so
extension=xmlrpc.so
extension=xsl.so
extension=yaz.so
extension=dba.so
extension=snmp.so

So now I need to narrow it down to what is causing the problem.

On all 3 of these systems I have not modified /etc/make.conf at all from the
installed version.

As an experiment I copied the working extensions.ini file to the non working
system, restarted apache and it still seg faults when browsing to phpMyAdmin.

Re: phpMyAdmin httpd segmentation fault

2007-02-13 Thread Terry Todd

Gerard,

I completed steps 1 through 6 that you suggested below. Step 6 took
two whole days to complete. I had to babysit the blue screens of config.

Sorry to say it still does the exact same thing. httpd seg faults
with no core file whenever the phpMyAdmin/index.php web page is browsed.

Re: phpMyAdmin httpd segmentation fault

2007-02-10 Thread Terry Todd

Spil,

Thanks for the pointers. I tried reordering extensions.ini and
even cutting it down to a minimul set and then down to just session
and mysql and it still segfaults apache whenever I try to browse
to phpMyAdmin/index.php.

On both of these systems that I have built I did build most all of
the php extensions figuring I would need them at some time or other
later on. Both systems are very vanilla out of the box 6.2 and
ports setups.

I do have INET6 compiled in the way it comes out of the box for 6.2
and ports.

I started from scratch and built a completely new system by installing
from CD's on a different computer and it does the exact same thing
in the exact same place. At this point I'm a little surprised that
no one else has run across this.

No CFLAGS were changed or anything else. It's a very standard install.

phpMyAdmin httpd segmentation fault

 same place in the exact same way.

/var/log/messages file gets:
Feb 3 16:07:38 testbox kernel: pid 8512 (httpd), uid 80: exited on signal 11

/var/log/httpd-errors gets:
[Sat Feb 3 16:07:39 2007] [notice] child pid 8512 exit signal Segmentation

I am out of ideas on what to try next. Anyone else have any suggestions?

TIA,

Which one?

2006-12-07 Thread Todd McNutt
I am hoping to install BSD on an IBM ThinkPad 600X that I have. It has not
been running the newer Windows and I popped a CD version of Knoppix in it and
it works fantastic.

It got me thinking... I had used BSD in the past and I would like to find an OS
that I can actually 'install' on the hard drive and just use the computer
strictly as a BSD machine. Do you have a version of BSD Free that will install
and run on this machine?

Hope you do,

Re: sysinstall install.cfg questions

2005-11-03 Thread Todd

Thank you!

Excellent, exactly what I needed.

The plan is to use disc1 of the release and modify it with a few
packages and config changes to make an easily installable version of our
modified desktop (Waimea/ROX/Webmin). I was going to use the BSD
installer (bsdinstaller.org) but this way seems to make more sense in
the long run, and leads into creating a port of the desktop as well
(which is planned).

Most likely we'll eventually make our own releases with a Live CD and a
separate Install CD, so your reply was about as perfect as I could of
ever hoped for.

Progress is slow as it's not a top priority, but a preview of the
project is available here: http://live.webpath.net

I hope to get some screen shots up with in the next week or two.

Are you creating your own CDs using a 'make release' (see release(7))
process? If so, I've generally followed an approach similar to the
following:

1. Create your install.cfg file in the /usr/src/release/ directory.
2. Create a patch file that will add your install.cfg to a standard
   /usr/src tree:

 cd /usr/src
 diff -u /dev/null src/release/install.cfg > ~/local.patch

3. Make the release with the appropriate LOCAL_PATCH parameter:

 make release \
   CHROOTDIR=/some/dir \
   BUILDNAME=6.0-MYRELEASE \
   CVSROOT=/usr/home/ncvs \
   RELEASETAG=RELENG_6_0 \
   LOCAL_PATCHES=/path/to/local.path

That would build a 6.0 security branch build with your install.cfg in
/usr/src/release/ of the chroot. The make release process then takes
care of placing the install.cfg in the appropriate location on the CD.

If you're attempting to patch an existing CD image, reading
/usr/src/release/Makefile suggests you'll need to:

- Extract the contents of the ISO
- Un-gzip and then mount the decompressed /boot/mfsroot.gz file
- Place your install.cfg in the root of the mounted mfsroot fs
- Unmount the mfsroot filesystem
- Re-gzip the mfsroot file to /boot/mfsroot.gz
- Run mkisofs to re-create the CD

Hopefully this points you in the right general direction!

Cheers
Antony

2005-11-02 Thread Glenn Todd
Since upgrading to FreeBSD 5.4-RELEASE-p8, and completeing a ports
cvsup (29 Oct) and portsupgade -arR I have been getting the following
error when the gnome desktop starts and during shutdown.

FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/" refcount is 2,
should be 1; fixing.

I presume it is something do with the following ports or their
dependencies:

Gnome 2.10.2
xorg-server-6.8.2_6
xorg-clients-6.8.2
xorg-fontserver-6.8.2

The same error is occuring on my laptop and main machine both are at
the same OS and ports upgrade level.

This problem has been reported before, however, I cannot find a fix.

Any ideas.

Re: Apache 2 SSL Error

2005-07-05 Thread Todd Suits
Jeff

You are correct! I was not starting Apache with SSL. I knew I had to
use the startssl command however I was using webmin for ease of
"clicking" start and stop and I had entered "startssl" in the wrong
box in the module config so therefor I was not starting Apache with
SSL. Once I started with SSL there were a few error's I had to
correct with the certificates I generated and in the ssl.conf but
starting it correctly was the problem. Thank you.. I have spent many
hours trying to get this set up and was very frustrated over the whole
project. Thanks again to everyone who took the time to reply. This
list is a great resource and without everyones participation it would
not work.

Apache 2 SSL Error

2005-07-05 Thread Todd Suits
I set up a FreeBSD 4.11 jail to learn how to setup SSL on Apache 2
correctly. I installed Apache 2.0.54 from ports. I generated SSL certs
just for testing purposes. I'm not able to get any response at all
from the server on SSL unless I set the Listen :443 directive in the
httpd.conf as where I think it is supposed to be set in ssl.conf. I
get the following error in httpd-error.log:

[Tue Jul 05 10:15:28 2005] [error] [client 24.123.123.123] Invalid
method in request \x80g\x01\x03

As this is just temporary and for testing purposes I have posted the
configs online as they are quite big and this is a work in progress,
see links below.

http://www.beerdrinka.com/httpd.conf

http://www.beerdrinka.com/ssl.conf

I keep re-reading the apache docs but there is just something I am
missing. As a note I have also tried this in a non-jail environment
on 5.3 p16 and get the same error results.

Balsa 2.3.2 Crash with attachments

2005-05-23 Thread Glenn Todd

I am running Balsa 2.3.2 with Gnome 2.10 on FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE-p15

If I try to attached a file to an email Balsa crashes. The only
information is what I have seen in Bug Buddy

Thread 6 (LWP 100195):
#0  0x28afeef7 in pthread_testcancel () from /usr/lib/libpthread.so.1

/usr/lib/libpthread.so.1

No symbol table info available.
#2  0x08116000 in ?? ()
No symbol table info available.

Is this a problem with Balsa, libpthread, gnome 2.10 or something with
my installation. I upgraded to 2.10 using the upgrade scripts and
updated the rest of my ports using portsupgrade as recently as last
Friday.

Re: Cannot use cvsup with 5.3-release

2005-04-07 Thread Todd Shirk
I ran into a problem like that when I did an upgrade to 5.4-prelease.
I found for me, that for port updates it seems to look at your release
level in your options. I went into root and ran sysinstall. I
selected Options. At the bottom of the left hand column is the option
Release Name. I changed it to 5.3-RELEASE. I'd probably check there,
another thing I'll do is try a couple other cvsup sites.

Issue compiling JDK15

2005-04-07 Thread Todd Shirk
Hi,

I've been attempting to compile JDK15 on my AMD64 laptop. I have
linux redhat 8 installed for linux compatibility and the
linux-sun-jdk1.4.2 installed so that the /usr/ports/java/jdk15 would
use the appropriate javac compiler to compile JDK15 natively. I reach
a point where I receive the following message.

execv(): Bad address
Error trying to exec /usr/local/linux-sun-jdk1.4.2/bin/javac.
Check if file exists and permissions are set correctly.
gmake[3]: *** [.compile.classlist] Error 1
gmake[3]: Leaving directory '/usr/ports/java/jdk15/work/j2se/make/java/java'
gmake[2]: *** [all] Error 1
gmake[2]: Leaving directory '/usr/ports/java/jdk15/work/j2se/make/java'
gmake[1] *** [all] Error 1
gmake[1]: Leaving directory '/usr/ports/java/jdk15/work/j2se/make'
gmake: *** [j2se-build] Error 2
*** Error code 2

Stop in /usr/ports/java/jdk15.

I've checked and /usr/local/linux-sun-jdk1.4.2/bin/javac exists and
permissions appear adequate. For giggles I chmod 777 on the file with
the same results.  Any thoughts?

Thanks

Re: automount usb flash drive?

2005-04-07 Thread Todd Shirk
Seems like the only thing that will work for me is to make a one-line
shell script. I tried the various things you mentioned. I have yet
to look at how to use amd(8). Setting vfs.usermount=1 and changing
the ownership to the user name in question allows me to mount the
usbkey without su'ing. I still can't get the usbd.conf to run an
attach command on the umass* action. Thanks for your help.

automount usb flash drive?

2005-04-06 Thread Todd Shirk
I was trying to figure out how to have a usb flash drive automount
when I plug it in. I currently have the following line in /etc/fstab

/dev/da0s1  /mnt/usbkey  msdos  rw,-m700,noauto  0  0

and the following in /etc/devfs.conf

perm  da0s1  0666

when I do the following command line command the usb flash drive mount fine

# mount /mnt/usbkey

But, when I'm in KDE viewing media:/ Removable Device (da0s1) is
shown is unmounted.

At the user level command line and in KDE, I receive /dev/da0s1:
Operation not permitted.

I'm not sure if part of the issue is permissions or if I'm missing a
piece for the auto-mounting to happen.

Any thoughts?

Re: Hardware problems after installing 5.4 pre-release

2005-03-30 Thread Todd Shirk
I've tried installing gnome and windowmaker to test the sound. Each
act the same as KDE. Mplayer works with sound but nothing else. I,
also, installed xmms and tested, no sound. The sound graphics are
idle, seeming to indicate that the sound is not being generated in the
applications. I, also, tried the command line app cdcontrol.

# cdcontrol -f /dev/acd0 play 1

no sound. Does mplayer use a kernel independent sound driver?

Re: Hardware problems after installing 5.4 pre-release

2005-03-28 Thread Todd Shirk
Here's an update on the sound issue. I ported down and compiled
mplayer. I popped in a DVD and typed on the command line:

# mplayer dvd://

With that I got sound to play. I then recompile xine, but xine still
has no sound. KDE is also soundless.

Hopefully this helps.

Re: Hardware problems after installing 5.4 pre-release

2005-03-28 Thread Todd Shirk
To add information on the usb mouse problem when I plug my usb mouse
in to the 2 usb 2.0 ports, I get the first error at the command line:

uhub1: device problem (SET_ADDR_FAILED), disabling port 2
uhub1: device problem (SET_ADDR_FAILED), disabling port 1

Like the sound, the usb mouse was working fine with FreeBSD 5.3, but
stop functioning after rebuild world to 5.4 pre-release.

Re: Hardware problems after installing 5.4 pre-release

2005-03-28 Thread Todd Shirk
You referred to kldstat. I'm not sure what I'm looking for with that
or what switch I may need to use. I typed and received the following
information:

# kldstat

Id Refs AddressSize Name
 18 0x8010 7c36b8   kernel
 21 0x808c4000 50c8 udbp.ko
 32 0x808ca000 20ae0netgraph.ko
 41 0x808eb000 5f98 ugen.ko
 51 0x808f1000 3918 ums.ko

I added the founding command and got the following results:

# kldload snd_driver
# kldstat

Id Refs AddressSize Name
 1   59 0x8010 7c36b8   kernel
 21 0x808c4000 50c8 udbp.ko
 32 0x808ca000 20ae0netgraph.ko
 41 0x808eb000 5f98 ugen.ko
 51 0x808f1000 3918 ums.ko
 61 0xa7842000 78d  snd_driver.ko
 71 0xa7843000 1a7d snd_ad1816.ko
 81 0xa7845000 1b9d snd_als4000.ko
 91 0xa7847000 1fdd snd_cmi.ko
101 0xa7849000 221d snd_cs4281.ko
112 0xa784c000 3f3a snd_csa.ko
121 0xa785 8add snd_ds1.ko
131 0xa7859000 4375 snd_emu10k1.ko
141 0xa785e000 2c81 snd_es137x.ko
152 0xa7861000 240a snd_ess.ko
164 0xa7864000 1a85 snd_sbc.ko
171 0xa7866000 181d snd_fm801.ko
182 0xa7868000 6e8a snd_mss.ko
191 0xa786f000 227d snd_ich.ko
201 0xa7872000 3e5d snd_maestro.ko
211 0xa7876000 5b3d snd_maestro3.ko
221 0xa787c000 e41d snd_neomagic.ko
231 0xa788b000 184d snd_sb8.ko
241 0xa788d000 1bed snd_sb16.ko
251 0xa788f000 251d snd_solo.ko
261 0xa7892000 221d snd_t4dwave.ko
271 0xa7895000 169d snd_via82c686.ko
281 0xa7897000 225d snd_vibes.ko

After doing that, I still do not have any sound. I notice that
snd_via8233 is not in the resulting list of loaded drivers in kldstat.
 My assumption is that it didn't load through kldload since it's being
loaded at the kernel level. With the command of:

# cat /dev/sndstat

FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm)
Installed devices:
pcm0: at io 0x1000 irq 10 (5p/1r/0v channels duplex default)

It would seem that my sound driver is loading. The audio software
seems to believe that there is a sound card to attach to. Could there
be a problem with the sound driver I'm using. Would there be a reason
why snd_via8233 works fine in 5.3 and not 5.4 pre-release? Also,
could the usb mouse problem be part of the same problem, reasoning
being that there may be a global hardware issue and that it may be
conflicts in device handling vs. a configuration issue? Regardless,
I'm happy and willing to try any thoughts.

I, also, tried to manually choose snd_via8233 with this result:

# kldload snd_via8233
kldload: can't load snd_via8233: File exists

In the meantime, I'll try to trace down some helpful error messages
from the usb mouse problem.

Hardware problems after installing 5.4 pre-release

2005-03-24 Thread Todd Shirk
I'm running FreeBsd/amd64 on a Gateway 7422GX.  I installed the
5.3-release version and configured the OS to function properly with
the hardware except for the built-in wireless and the infamous
conexant softmodem. I read up on some wireless setups to get my
wireless card working. In the process, I decided to try my first
attempt at a rebuild of world with the latest cvsup stable-supfile
download (March 24, 2005). I used the method of:

# make buildworld
# make buildkernel KERNCONF=MYKERNEL
# make installkernel KERNCONF=MYKERNEL
# reboot

selected singleuser mode from startup menu

# fsck -p
# mount -u /
# mount -a -t ufs
# swapon -a
# mergemaster -p
# make installworld
# mergemaster
# reboot

(MYKERNEL is the GENERIC plus the lines needed for loading the sound
system and the via8233 sound driver for my sound card)
  device   sound
  device   "snd_via8233"
(with mergemaster I chose "i" for each file, indicating to use tempory)

I booted into the new environment and started KDE3.4. I noticed that
I had no sound and no usb mouse functionality. I did the following:

# cat /dev/sndstat
FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm)
Installed devices:
pcm0: at io 0x1000 irq 10 (5p/1r/0v channels duplex default)

 So, the driver seems to be loading, but I'm getting no sound. I've,
also, done the following to try to get the sound back.

# sysctl hw.snd.pcm0.vchans=8
# sysctl hw.snd.maxautovchans=8

I checked my mixer levels in KDE and added

hint.pcm.0.vol="100"

to the /boot/device.hints

being that the usb mouse also stopped working, I think there might be
an issue with the hardware discovery routines in bootup or a
configuration file that 5.3 used was overwritten with the rebuilding
of world.

I'm quite new to FreeBSD and am trying to get a good grasp on the
general workings of the OS. So, assume that I need step by step
guidelines. Perhaps, since I'm dealing with a pre-release, some of
the functionality is missing by design. I have assumed that STABLE
would mean that functioning hardware from the prior release will
continue functioning with STABLE. I've stayed clear of CURRENT
assuming things may often be broken in that branch, as it is
experimental.

Any help in enlightening me on my hardware issues will be greatly appreciated.

How to downgrade perl from 5.8.6 to 5.8.5?

2005-02-26 Thread Todd Suits
I need to downgrade the perl port from 5.8.6 to 5.8.5 at least
temporarily in order to install Plesk on a 5.3 system. I see the
5.8.5 files on the ftp.freebsd.org/./distfiles server but I have
no idea how to go about doing a downgrade. I checked out the ported
applications link on the main freebsd.org page and I couldn't even
confirm that 5.8.5 was ever installed as a port. How do I go about
doing this?

Could not run "su" in Gnome

2004-09-21 Thread Todd W . Janiak
I am new to FreeBSD and the *nixes in general and have come a long way
just to get a useful GUI to appear on my screen. Now I have a hit a
road block I can't seem to figure out.

I am running 4.10-RELEASE and the latest version of Gnome 2.6, which I
upgraded with "portupgrade -a". When I try to change any settings under
"System Tools" that require the admin password such as "Network
Settings" or "Users and Groups", I receive a prompt asking me for the
root password. When I give it, it responds with...

Could not run "su". Make sure you have permission to access this file.
However, it will say this even if I am logged in as root.
Any ideas as to why this is happening?
Furthermore, I can't seem to auto-login with GDM as it say "Access
Denied" when is starts. I have configure pam.conf and gdm.conf as
recommend in the FreeBSD Gnome FAQ, A check of the logs show that
"pam_nologin.so" cannot be found and there is no such file located in
/usr/libs.

Any idea what package or port adds that file?
Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give.

fsck: cannot find inode X

2004-04-23 Thread Todd Meister
Hello,

Tonight, a server crashed and, when it came up, required a manual fsck.
Normally, this is not a big deal, especially on our customer web servers,
where there isn't much "real" activity at the time the server crashed
(~5:00am). This time, though, I saw this error for the first time, while
running fsck on /dev/rccd0c (mounted normally as /usr/home):

  fsck: cannot find inode 71683

I searched around a bit for the error, and didn't find a whole lot, and
nothing that solved the problem. I remembered the fsdb utility, and ran
it, like so:

  fsdb /dev/rccd0c

which put me in interactive mode. I poked around a bit, hoping I'd be
smarter than fsck, and would find the inode on my own. Turns out, fsck
was right - I couldn't find the inode. Not knowing of a better way (any
suggestions are welcome, of course), I cleared the inode:

  clri 71683

I was then able to successfully complete a fsck on that partition, and the
server booted with no problems (so far).

I'm writing this mainly so that it'll go into the archives, and hopefully
help someone else out later.

I'm no longer on the freebsd-questions list (too much traffic for my poor
brane), so CC me on replies, if you want to.

pppd version

2004-04-22 Thread Todd
I'm curently running FreeBSD 4.9-STABLE #1: Fri Mar 26 10:15:04 EST 2004

Which has pppd version 2.3 patch level 5.

I'm trying to use the X-ISP GUI program and it requires pppd version
2.3.9 or later to be able to automatically obtain DNS. I'm going to be
connecting at various locations, each with it's own DNS, and would like
to be able to pull them automatically as opposed to hard coding them and
carrying around a list.

Anyone know how I can update pppd?

Is pppd even being maintained?

If I update to the latest 4.9-stable what pppd version does it have?

Jason...

Thanks for the tip. I ran memtest86 all day today (about 4/5 cycles)
and it didn't come up with any errors.

I'm going to try the installer on another motherboard to see if it's
some odd motherboard/processor combo.

Thanks again.

Hi Todd,

Did you try testing your memory extensively? I've had bad memory work
fine in one OS and perform really badly in another. Memtest86
(http://www.memtest86.com/) has worked well for me in the past, but
I've had times when it wouldn't work, especially when the BIOS
reserves a chunk of memory that happens to be bad :)

Kernel Panic on Install

2003-11-19 Thread Todd Kennedy
Hello...

I'm trying to install FreeBSD 4.9 (from the Mini CD ISO) on my system,
yet the instant it tries to load the driver for my ethernet card, it
has a Fatal trap 12.

I read the FAQ on this and searched the mailing list. Unfortunately, I
can't do a stack trace or provide anymore information than what the
Kernel Panic says, but since it's the default 100% plain vanilla
kernel, maybe someone can help me out.

The ethernet card is a 3COM Fast Etherlink XL PCI (3C905B-TXNM), and I
noticed that the fault might be from failing hardware, (the hardware
does work under XP, but I know that's not 100% tried and true test),
so I swapped it out with my other ethernet card from my linux server
(same exact ethernet card, and it works under Redhat 9 and Debian
Woody) and I still get the same error message. (Of course it might be
other hardware failing, but the system does work fine under XP).
The last kernel messages before the panic are:

4.3 on pci0
xl0: <3Com 3c905B-TX Fast> at device 10.0 on pci0
xl0: couldn't map ports/memory
xl0: reset didn't complete
xl0: command never completed!
xl0: command never completed!
xl0: command never completed!
Then it prints out:

Fatal trap 12: page fault while in kernel mode
fault virtual address = 0x0
fault code = supervisor write, page not present
instruction pointer = 0x8:0xc03156bf
stack pointer =  0x10:0xc084be10
frame pointer = 0x10:0xc084be38
code segment = base 0x0, limit 0xf, type 0x1b
= DPL 0, pres 1, def32 1, gran 1
processor eflags = interrupt enabled, resume, IOPL = 0
current process =  0 (swapper)
interrupt mask = net tty bio cam
trap number = 12
panic: page fault
Uptime: 0s
The system is a P3-666 with 512MB ram, on an ASUS motherboard. If
anyone has any ideas as to what could be causing this, or what other
things I might try to prevent this from happening that would be great.

Thanks!

OK, that appears to be the case at least for this latest one. I know I
received a strange one earlier in the week from a submission I had made
several weeks ago, and I am pretty sure that was from this list's

Take a look at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/submitting.html

You may also want to have a read of this one to make sure you are not

To get a feel for what you are getting yourself in to you could read

A good way to avoid the possibility of that and still get all the

Assuming one knows how to author an html document. Is this part of the
Opera port? On the web page is says it is part of Opera for Windows,
but does not mention it being part of Opera for Linux or otherwise. It
is an interesting idea though.

Follow up to this. Slideshow is indeed a very powerful presentation
program. The problem lies in figuring out how to use it. It appears
to me that you have to write the slides in XML, then program the actual
slideshow in Python, since slideshow is apparently a Python module.
The 'example' slideshow that is installed doesn't really tell me much,
and the docs installed simply refer you to the sample slideshow.

Out of the applications I mentioned the only one I have done any real

but it was sufficient for my needs. It lacks animation and is probably
every bit the PowerPoint clone that OpenOffice is. I stay away from

Slideshow seems like an impressive application to me from looking at the
web site http://www.alobbs.com/slideshow. It has an option to create
"ASCII Slides", so I don't know if that means it can read from a text
file or not. I might try it out just to see, but I am trying to cut
back on what I am installing these days. The ports system almost makes
it *too* easy to install things and I've gone a little crazy with it
lately.

Seriously, if you have KDE installed (which you probably don't if you
are worried about system resources) there is KPresenter. The HTML
suggestion is a very valid one though, and there is a port for
converting PowerPoint to html in /usr/ports/textproc/xlhtml but I've
never tried it.

There are a few in the 'misc' ports. Look for MagicPoint or Pointless.
I think Pointless uses OpenGL, so you might not want that one either.
There is another in /usr/ports/multimedia/slideshow that is supposedly
very powerful. I have only glanced at it.

They do *allow* you to use KDE, but it is RH's own fundamentally
"broken" KDE that it ships with. Look in comp.windows.x.kde and you
will find that at least 90%, if not more, of the actual comlaints of
some aspect of KDE not working come from RH users, and you will almost
always find that the problem is a known problem (and specific to) KDE
on Red Hat.

No, you do not *have* to use them, but I am fairly certain that X and at
least GNOME are installed by default.

I believe, and someone correct me here, that BSD was a modification of

indicating that BSD and Sys V are different branches from the same
trunk. The history is rather confusing though, so I expect to be wrong

Not sure what you mean by that "its tarballs". Linux distributions come
with an immense amount of software that generally gets installed with
the OS. FreeBSD comes with quite a bit as well (enough to get your
system up and running for just about any purpose you desire), but one
of the intents of FreeBSD is to give the user a little more choice in
what is installed. Read about the ports collection at www.freebsd.org.

Not that I am aware of. "All" the packages available to FreeBSD amount
to some 9000+ programs.

It comes with a very good installation utility.

FreeBSD is not Linux, it is based on the 4.4 BSD Lite developed by UC
Berkeley. Due to copyright restrictions, one can not really call it
Unix either, though (IMO) the BSD family is as close as you will come
in a modern OS to the original AT&T 'Unix'.

When you say foomatic-rip from ports, is this the foomatic-db port? I
cannot find a port for foomatic-rip (which I thought was just a Perl
script anyway). I eventually gave up on foomatic with my Epson C82 and

I see on the mini-itx site it lists Linux and FreeBSD as being "Linux

Well, you said it yourself; BSD is not for you. Being computer literate

Do you have an exclude range established? I think the default is to

Question on which port is better for COBOL

2003-09-20 Thread Todd Stephens
I have a need to do some COBOL programming at home where I run FreeBSD
4.8. I see the ports collection has two options for COBOL compilers:
tinyCobol and openCobol. The tinyCobol port has a higher version
number than openCobol, leading me to believe it is more mature, but
this is not always the case.

Has anyone any experience with either (or preferably both)? Which one
is preferred by users out there?

Thank you for any assistance.

OpenOffice in FreeBSD

2003-09-17 Thread Todd Stephens
I finally completed building OO and chose a local install to my home
directory. Now I cannot save any documents as it says OO was "started
under an invalid parameter" when I try to. Should I have chosen the
other install type (Network is it)? If so, can I use the OO setup
utility to uninstall then reinstall, or will I have to build OO all
over again?

I should have gone that route, but with an app so big and complex I felt
I was better off using ports. Of course, I'm going on about 30 hours
now of compile time. Mitigating that is the fact that it had to
compile and install gcc 3.2.3 before it even got to the OpenOffice
build.

Ogg encoding

2003-09-14 Thread Todd Stephens
I found a port for mp32ogg to convert mp3 to ogg format, but is there a
program to convert wav to ogg format? I like the ogg format, but it
seems to me that there will be some data loss going from wav to mp3 and
then to ogg.

cdda2wav permissions

2003-09-14 Thread Todd Stephens
I have everything configured (so I thought) to use the cd-rw drive as a
normal user. As a normal user, I can mount a data cd just fine, but
when I try to run cdda2wav to record an audio cd as a user, I get a
permission denied error. I checked the cdda2wav binary and the
permissions on it are 555, so I should be able to execute the binary as
a user. Permissions on the relative devices (cd0a and cd0c and the
rcd* devices) are all 644 root:operator. What else needs to be done
here?

Wow! Thanks for the speedy response. My original message to the list
hasn't even shown up in my inbox yet! I think I need to have a talk
with my ISP :) Actually, I was expecting at least a day or so for the
install. I guess it is not so bad. My main fear was that someone was
going to say 3 days.

This may be related to my question regarding using xterm-color. Try
typing this at your command line:
$ TERM=xterm-color

Then try ls -G and see if you get color or not.

OpenOffice

2003-09-14 Thread Todd Stephens
I am installing this from ports. Considering everything else that is
getting installed along with it (gcc 3.2.3 among others), how long
should I expect this to take? Anyone have any experience with this?
Running a K6-2 500Mhz (FBSD 4.8)
