linux_base

2005-01-07 Thread Warner Joseph

Hi,

I'm running 4.8-RELEASE-p27 and had a question
regarding my current install of linux_base

#portupgrade -l "<" doesn't reveal this package needs upgrading
but portaudit -a says:

Affected package: linux_base-6.1_6
Type of problem: xpm -- image decoding vulnerabilities.
Reference:

I've followed that url, googled and searched the -questions archive
but can't find any information regarding how to correct this.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

-Joe

RE: linux_base

2005-01-07 Thread Warner Joseph

Thanks Kris, unless I've misunderstood...am I at risk
by using linux_base-6 and if so how can I correct this?

#portupgrade -rR linux_base doesn't do anything and
because of hardware limitations I can't upgrade to a major
release.

#
#linux_base-6 will never have the security vulnerability fixed because
#it's not supported by redhat. linux_base contains redhat 8.x which is
#also out of support, but does not currently have security problems.
#It will be updated to something more modern after 4.11-RELEASE.

Jabberd Instructions

2004-03-01 Thread Warner Joseph

Hi all,

Does anyone know of any good step-by-step
instructions for setting up jabberd on FreeBSD?

There are some instructions at jabber.org but
I'm looking for instructions specific to FreeBSD.

Thanks

Joe

Yeah see, I wasn't even sure if I was supposed to
install /usr/ports/net/jabber or /usr/ports/net/jabberd

I'll give it a shot, thanks for the quick response.

then goto /usr/local/etc - check the jabberd.xml file - edit
where needed and start from rc.d. Most defaults are fine
for you esp. if you do not do any confernencing.

RE: 5.1 & Compaq Smart Array

2003-08-08 Thread Warner Joseph

I think it's already disabled or won't work at all on this server.

I can't remember if I said this before but when I boot the mini-install
CD on the server option #2 says "Boot with ACPI enabled" and when
I boot on a regular PC that already has 5.1 installed it says "Boot with
ACPI disabled" so I don't think 5.1 is going to work on a Compaq
Proliant 2500.

I looked over here:

http://prioris.mini.pw.edu.pl/~gregory/FreeBSD/hpi386.html
<http://prioris.mini.pw.edu.pl/~gregory/FreeBSD/hpi386.html>

..and noticed there is only one config listed for someone running FreeBSD
on a 2500 and they're running 4.7 -STABLE, not 5.1

I need to run this in a production environment so 5.1 may not be a good
choice. It's too bad because I'd like more time to tinker with this to see
if I could get 5.1 loaded and running but I'm running out of time.

Thanks

Joe

I guess that's what you are looking for:

hint.acpi.0.disabled=1 # disable ACPI (i386 only)

I suppose it has to be put in /etc/sysctl.conf, but I'm not sure...

RAIDFrame is software raid so it doesn't matter here. You should check

wether your Smart Array is properly supported, first, a good place to

start: http://people.freebsd.org/~msmith/RAID/.

It looks like it is. Mine is a Compaq Smart-2SL Array Controller

Then maybe try to disable APIC at boot (??), as this is known to cause

problems.

I don't have that option, the option menu has an option to "Enable"

APIC support not disable it. I'm using the 5.1 -RELEASE mini-install

CD.

But first, go to the BIOS on the server and make sure it is

preset either for Linux OS or for "Other".

Right, I used the Compaq Setup CD, blew away my old FreeBSD 4.6

configuration,

set up a new one including a new array (I added an extra drive), chose

"Other OS" during the manual install and rebooted to install the new

OS.

Then maybe make sure your

raid volume(s) is configured with Compaq tools before attempting to

install FreeBSD.

FWIW - I had it running on 4.6 -STABLE just fine before this.

hope this helps

Duh, I let myself forget that it doesn't even get into the installation
process correctly...

One thing you could try, just for the test, would be to install 5.1 on
a different machine and make sure safe mode is enforced (acpi, eisa
probe, etc... like in the errata). Then put the disk in the Compaq and
see if it boots, and if it does, re-enable things one by one until it
stops working.

But I think I remember you said you need to setup this server asap ;)

RE: Upgrading SSH

2002-07-16 Thread Warner Joseph

>cvsup and so-called make world

I'm familiar with this and run 'make world' often
in order to stay up to date. However, it's my
understanding that Openssh-3.4 wasn't included
with the base install, meaning that simply running
cvsup and doing a 'make world' would still leave you
with the vulnerable version. Is this incorrect?

FWIW, I was able to upgrade to 3.4 by killing the current sshd daemon job,
installed /usr/ports/security/openssh and then changed the
"Enable SSH" line in /etc/rc.conf to "NO" Lastly, I copied sshd.sh.sample
to sshd.sh in /usr/local/etc/rc.d/ and issued:
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/./sshd.sh start

Thanks should go to Scott Robbins for helping me
with this on 7/2

Thanks

Joe

The most thorough way to keep up with this and any other security updates is
to periodically run cvsup and so-called make world. See the handbook and
http://www.google.com/bsd for details.

Yes, precisely why I said:

"However, it's my understanding that Openssh-3.4 wasn't included"

..meaning "at that time"

I agree there was quite a bit of confusion regarding
which versions were affected, I was quite confused
at the time myself. Upgrading Openssh the way I did,
at that time, was the best option for me. I take
vulnerabilities seriously and needed ssh patched as
quickly as possible with limited downtime.

It's good to know I won't have to worry about anything
the next time I 'make world'.

Thanks for the good info.

Joe

The ssh bundled with 4-STABLE and the security branches never was
vulnerable to the recent OpenSSH compromise. More by luck than
judgement --- 4-STABLE was using a version based on OpenSSH 2.9 until
recently, and that preceeded the incorporation of the block of code
where the bug manifested itself.

As a result of the hype surrounding the announcement of the OpenSSH
bug, when it wasn't at all clear exactly what older versions were
affected, the decision was taken to upgrade to the latest portable
OpenSSH 4.3p1 in 4-STABLE. Hence the easiest way to upgrade right now
is just to cvsup a recent version of stable and make world in the
usual fashion.

It turns out that the only version of FreeBSD that ever contained a
vulnerable OpenSSH in the base system was 5-CURRENT, as per the recent
security advisement: FreeBSD-SA-02:31.openssh.asc
(ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/CERT/advisories/FreeBSD-SA-02%3A31.openss
h.asc)

Cheers,

Matthew

MySQL problems after upgrade to 4.6-STABLE (Please Help)

2002-07-22 Thread Warner Joseph

Hi,

I just upgraded our
production server from 4.5-STABLE to 4.6-STABLE.

Everything seems
fine, with the exception of my install of MySQL.

Now, when trying to
access our forum system or any database driven
pages, I get errors
like this:

phpBB : Critical Error
Could not connect to the database

..and
this:

Warning: mysql_free_result(): supplied
argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in
/usr/local/www/nuke/html/includes/sql_layer.php on line
491

I've
done these upgrades many times and have never once experienced a problem like
this.

I'm in a real crunch
and was wondering if someone could help?

Thanks
