 Thanks for the idea. While I'm not against the idea of the disk dying,
 this is reproduceable quite reliably. Foreground fsck -y in single user
 mode works in about 2 minutes (for the 119GB slice) flawlessly every
 time and background fsck always hangs the machine.

 Additionally, the machine is about a week old Dell Poweredge 1650. While
 we all know new != works, it's less likely than a machine with a hard
 drive that's been in there awhile.

 Unless there's something radically different about how fsck works in
 those two fashions, I'm going to assume the reproducability and the fact
 that I'm having similar problems on two totally different machines in
 different setups (IDE vs SCSI, P4 vs P3, Dell vs HP) means that a dying
 disk is not the problem I'm having.

 So I ask the list again: Is there a way to disable the background
 checking of disks?

add background_fsck=NO to your /etc/rc.conf

you don't need a spare partition, any empty directory will do. whenever

 The web site gives a step-by-step for what they expect you to want to

 Any suggestions for a more comprehensive HOWTO?

hmm yeah, it's not that hard to configure, but it takes some playing around
with the config files to get everything working just right...

courier doesn't do digest-md5 but to always offer cram-md5 and cram-sha1, and
offer plain and login only under tls, you'd do something like:

AUTHMODULES=authdaemon
ESMTPAUTH=CRAM-MD5 CRAM-SHA1
ESMTPAUTH_TLS=PLAIN LOGIN CRAM-MD5 CRAM-SHA1

that would be in the esmtpd config file, similar settings in the pop3d and
imapd config files...

[btw the freebsd port is an old version and otherwise broken, that messed me
up for a while, but compiling the latest source works all good]

   shell AFAIK. How to set the prompt for interactive invocations of
   your root user's shell depends on the shell.
  I took out my PS1=david$ line in my .profile, and now I have it working
  again. My user shell is simply bash-2.03$ and my su shell is
  su-2.03#.

  Thanks for your help.

 You're welcome :)

 Don't explicitly set a '$' in your PS1 if you want bash to have
 control of your superuser/simple-user changes. Use this instead:

   PS1='david\$'

 and see if it looks better. For more \X escape sequences that you can
 use in your PS1, look at the manpage of bash.

or probably better in this case PS1='\u\$ '

i prefer PS1='[\u \W]\$ '

   Does anyone know how to get the delete to work properly in a ssh console? I
 realize that the fact I am using ssh doesn't matter, but since that is how I
 am connected, that's how I will refer to it. ;-) I am using Konsole (KDE
 xterm) to ssh to my fbsd server. I have been through all the docs I can find,
 but none related to remote connections (i.e. pseudo ttys). Where do I define
 the type of keyboard mapping to using for remote connections? Currenty, I
 have konsole set to use vt420 which causes the delete key to behave like the
 backspace key. Most of the others produce a ~ (tilde) when delete is
 pressed. I would really like to be able to use the delete via remote
 connections!

set konsole to use xterm and create an .inputrc file in your home directory on
the remote machine containing:

\e[1~: beginning-of-line
\e[4~: end-of-line
\e[3~: delete-char
\e[H:beginning-of-line
\e[F:end-of-line
\e[7~:beginning-of-line
\e[8~:end-of-line
\x7F: backward-delete-char

if the remote machine is running freebsd 4.x, you should overwrite its
/usr/share/misc/termcap file with one from a freebsd 5 installation and run
cap_mkdb /usr/share/misc/termcap

 Even when I install a minimal system from an install CD (just bin), and then
 cvsup and make world with the above in /etc/make.conf , the original binary
 files are still around. I can remove them manually by going into the various
 directories (/bin, /sbin, /usr/bin, /usr/sbin, /usr/libexec) and removing
 any files older than my installworld date, but that still leaves crud in
 /usr/share, etc.

 Is there a better way to either do a stripped install, or to remove the
 files programmatically? Using a simple command like find / \! -mtime 1
 -print also finds files in /usr/include, /usr/share/man, etc. that I don't
 want to remove.

install into a different DESTDIR and use diff to find the differences...

why recommend vga for such low-end systems? pcvt instead of sc+vga saves

 I'm kind of new to FreeBSD, in terms of the structure the OS. I've
 installed FreeBSD 5.0 RC 3 before I had version 4.7. I install the OS to
 explore and learn about it, so far I love it.
 Here is my question: How can I change the resolution of the consol ?
 By default it's set to 640x480. I've read there is a way to display a
 splash image at higher resolution, but I'm not sure if it will stay
 afterwards. Basically I want to set the consol resolution at 1024 or
 higher, like I once had done in a Slackware Linux installation.

setting allscreens_flags=VESA_132x60 in /etc/rc.conf is all good...
also need vesa in the kernel, or load the module...

 His writeup isn't even very good. On the initial page he claims
 they tested with FreeBSD, but on sidebar #2 he claims they used
 OpenBSD.

the only tuning they did (kernel tweaks for high performance lol) was
upping kern.maxfiles and kern.maxfilesperproc... all one can argue
this shows is that out of the box freebsd 4.2 isn't configured for optimal
performance on these tests...

 all from different (at least 100 ips) over and over again bringing my
 server to its knees. As i said previously i have been dossed by the
 nobodys many times and it usually just goes away. This has been going on
 since january first. I am running IPFW with very strict rules, on FreeBSD
 4.7 IPFW does me no good because i am allowing the port they are abusing
 (80) due to the last DOS attack and my few hours research i have the
 following options already in my rc.conf

 tcp_extensions=NO
 tcp_keepalive=YES
 tcp_restrict_rst=YES
 icmp_bmcastecho=NO
 icmp_drop_redirect=YES
 firewall_enable=YES
 firewall_script=/etc/rc.firewall
 firewall_type=custom
 firewall_quiet=NO
 firewall_logging_enable=YES
 log_in_vain=YES

 Im sure you can notice some mistakes. I try to keep the research on this
 lame shit to a minumum as it does not interest me to learn how to hurt
 other people. Please help me get the best out of this immature child and
 continue my website which is a complete gift to FreeBSD and its community,
 not that you owe me a god damn thing but you understand what i mean.. I
 have dealt with this many times. As soon as my site gets big and i have a
 lot of users in irc, some little jealous network comes along and destroys
 what i worked on. The last time this happened my ISP shut ME off because
 it took out one of their facilities.

 When I use dump to make a backup, I noticed that a very large file (several

 seems to have been backup-ed by dump after all. Or, I should say, its size
 seems to be added to the dump-file, making my backup of that partition
 several G larger than it should be.

 This must be some sort of caching problem, as I already saw this once
 before, on using df, where df, for a while thereafter, still shows the size
 of a partition occupied after deleting a large file, only to drop back to
 its normal indication a few seconds later.

 Or it could be that dump, while the file has already been deleted, just
 grows extra large because of all those blocks that have been used. :(

 Is there a way I can flush this cache, so dump will only use files that
 actually still exist?

 Thanks.
