As for other desktop environments, yes.

Whether it's the ports, or the pkg_add precompiled binaries. Am I right in
 assuming this?

I think KDE 3 is still in ports, but will be scheduled for removal,
as KDE 4 is the place where development takes place, and there seems
to be no active development on KDE 3 that can be built (!) on FreeBSD
due to lack of contribution.

I am currently running a live version of FreeBSD 8.2 with KDE 4.8.

May I ask which live system this is?

 The thing
here is, that KDE 4 is simply too heavy for my system. For example: it is
impossible for me to have two open shells at the same time. Once I exit a
given shell, I can't open another one due to a lack of resources, even after
 having
turned off all the extra stuff - plasma desktop, nepomuk...

Excuse me... you're joking, right? I assume you have a plentycore
processor with Gigs of RAM, and already two shells show a problem?
That sounds totally wrong.

When you play a music file and move the window, do you get skipping
audio, too?

Just scary...

As a consequence, I can see myself do two possible things, to have a system
running with KDE 3.5 once again:

 1. Go back to an older release of FreeBSD and install KDE 3.5 from the
precompiled binaries that are on the DVD donwload version.
Judging by the release announcements, this should be 7.1.

Yes, this will work. But note that you are running an OS that
has been gone out of support, so you probably won't be able
to install newer software using ports or packages. However,
you can use the system as is, and even use ports as long
as the distfiles are still kept available online.

 2. To be honest, I am quite happy with 8.2 and I would like to keep it for
some time to come. In other words, is there a way to keep 8.2 and still
have KDE 3.5 along with it? For example has anyone ever tried to
install a 7.1 pre-built package (KDE 3.5 in this case) on an 8.2 system?
 Is that be possible?

That should be possible if you install the required compat7x
port on the system. Keep an eye on dependencies and make sure
you won't be shooting your feet. A good start would be to
install the KDE stuff on a clean system (right after compat7x)
so there won't be much confusion.

FreeBSD 8.2 with pre-built KDE 3.5 package from FreeBSD 7.1 DVD

2013-01-17 Thread Georg Reilinger
Hi everybody,

My issue is the following:

As far as I know, FreeBSD has completely dropped support for KDE 3.5.

Whether it's the ports, or the pkg_add precompiled binaries. Am I right in

assuming this?

I am currently running a live version of FreeBSD 8.2 with KDE 4.8. The thing

here is, that KDE 4 is simply too heavy for my system. For example: it is

impossible for me to have two open shells at the same time. Once I exit a

given shell, I can't open another one due to a lack of resources, even after
having

turned off all the extra stuff - plasma desktop, nepomuk...

As a consequence, I can see myself do two possible things, to have a system

running with KDE 3.5 once again:

1. Go back to an older release of FreeBSD and install KDE 3.5 from the

precompiled binaries that are on the DVD donwload version.
Judging by the release announcements, this should be 7.1.

http://www.freebsd.org/releases/7.1R/announce.html

This is something that I don't really feel like doing.

Any other solutions?

Many thanks
Georg

I have tried both, GNOME and Xfce. Found both to be kinda yuckie. Not really
feeling at home here.

-- There are forks of GNOME 2, but I guess there's no fork of KDE 3.

Actually there is. It is called Trinity: http://www.trinitydesktop.org/ , but I
don't know, if it is currently supported on FreeBSD.
If not, may be a reason, to become a porter!

-- Some users claim that it should be possible to set up KDE 4, that it become
equal to KDE 3. I doubt that.

I highly and holily second that. I have heard quite a few people complain about
KDE 4's heavy hunger for resources.

-- Another issue are hard dependencies, such as the dependency to the buggy

This would be my very last option. As you can see, I am still working on a go
around here.

Re: tar compression

2013-01-17 Thread Georg Reilinger
If it doesn't necessarily have to be tar, then I'd recommend using 7zip:

archivers/p7zip

It has among the best compression ratios.

The man page for tar command says there a 4 different compress types you can
use, xz, bzip, bzip2 and gzip.

Which one is the fastest and compresses the most?
I am using -z option for gzip and it sure is slow.
Hoping one of the other zip options are better.
What do you guys use?

Another question about tar is can I have tar create a compressed bkup
of 2 files and a directory tree all in single tar command?

For this question, you must debug the kernel by Serial.
when fatal, you use find the error by command bt.

Add more debug options to kernel, because dump is not useful
 with corrupted stack.

For this question, you must debug the kernel by Serial.
when fatal, you use find the error by command bt.

Re[2]: Please help - adaptec 2820sa not allowing installation

Hello.

I was _assured_ that these cards are supported in 6.1-RELEASE, that all is
well, and I could install and that was that.

No, you were not assured, at least not by when we discussed this last
week. I told you that I personally did not guarantee that it worked,
only that I had heard reports that it did.

You have two variables here. One is that it's an array that is larger
than what the aac driver has supported in the past. Second is that it's
RAID-6. Both of these variables should be handled by the aac driver
update that happened last year, but again, I couldn't validate it, so I
can only go with the reports of others.

As others suggested, you need to experiment with simplier
configurations. This will help us identify the cause and hopefully
implement a fix. No one is asking you to throw away money or resources.
Since you've already done the simple test with a single drive, could you
 do the following two tests:

 1. RAID-5, full size (whatever 2TB value you were talking about).
 2. RAID-6, 2TB.

From there, I'll figure out what needs to be done to get it fully
 working for you.

I have Adaptec 2820SA on my FreeBSD 6.1-STABLE. But it work in RAID-10
mode. I was build RAID-5, RAID-6, but FreeBSD (5.3, 5.4, 6.0, 6.1 don't see
this raid
drive.) On my system also work Adaptec freebsd_cli for 2820SA.

Re[2]: IPTV

2006-02-10 Thread georg
I need some sofware that allow resive multicast TV and cast them to STB and
 PC...

The thing with IPTV is that the content is encrypted, and gets decrypted
by the STB, which is controlled by your IPTV-provider. You cannot simply
connect your FreeBSD box to your switch, receive multicast video and
display it. I don't think you'll find open source software that does this...

The other way around works fine, of course. vlc sends multicast and the
 STB displays it.

 HTH, Nikos

Did You know software that not open source for IPTV?

DVD-RAM and packet writing?

2005-12-26 Thread Georg Bege

Hi guys,

I've been asking this on ##FreeBSD @freenode already, but sadly no one
knows.

Time to ask this here ;)
I've got a CD/DVD recorder: 'HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4167B' and would like
to record on DVD-RAM's.
Sadly I've never got that packet writing working on FreeBSD, just on
Linux - so my guess is FreeBSD doesnt support that yes.
All I wanna know is just the information if DVD-RAM recording does work
on FreeBSD or not, and if yes then how?

My FreeBSD is 6.0-RELEASE-p1 both kernel and userland.
I can access DVD-RAM's with the udfclient tools witihn the ports
collection but cant record on them, I also tried a blank DVD-RAM (from
panasonic) pre-formatted with udf 2.0,

mounting is possible but only read-only.

Thanks for ya time ppl

Short version: though it sure seems like one of the drives had gone
bad, the Promise card didn't notice. It may say the array is READY
 you shouldn't trust it.

But it shouldnt freeze.
Its a RAID 10, or do you think there are more than 1 disks broken?

Re: semaphore problem with Bakbone's Netvault on FreeBSD 4.10

2004-12-08 Thread Georg Altmann
In the meantime Bakbone support managed to send me a working (binary) patch
fixing the problem and I was asked by Bakbone to post this information. So,
if you experience the problem described below, please contact Bakbone

transferred to an ADIC FastStor 2 (LTO 1) library.
The problem occurs when the backup is transferred from disk to tape and
if the backup job spans multiple tapes (not virtual media!): Netvault
recognizes the end-of-media, loads a new media for the job and then hangs
endlessly trying to write to the new media.
Bakbone claims, that this is a problem with SysV shared memory and
semaphores in FreeBSD (and therefore not their software). Their support
also sent me a patch for Netvault (unfortunately not a binary one, so I
cannot test it) which is allegedly known to work around the problem. I
attached it below. Note the added #if defined(PLATFORM_FREEBSD) bits in
the code. To my understanding, the patched code polls the semaphore
instead of waiting for it.
Please also note, that I configured Netvault to use network sockets
instead of shared mem for the transfer and the problem persists (I did
this by only selecting TCP Data Transfer in the configure device tab
for both the tape and the virtual library and by adding [Data
Channels]\nForce Sockets=TRUE to configure.cfg as proposed by Bakbone
support, for anyone familiar with netvault). So I assume, the problem is
really only related to semaphores and not at all to shared memory(?).
I hope that someone can guess from the code if this really leads to a
deadlock because of a FreeBSD bug in SysV sempaphore handling.
I have already skimmed FreeBSD PRs for semaphore bugs, but no post really
seemed related to this specific problem (see
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr-summary.cgi?category=severity=prior

whether I should urge Bakbone to fix their buggy software or look for a
patch for the FreeBSD kernel and/or libraries.

semaphore problem with Bakbone's Netvault on FreeBSD 4.10

Hi all,
I have a problem running the backup software Netvault from Bakbone

I'm having a problem mounting dos files from the windows drive. I've tried every
kind of mount command (mount_msdos, mount, etc) and every kind of option or options.
I even included /mnt in the command. Nothing works. I am not using anything in
the fstab file for this mount. 5 years ago, it was working perfectly on my computer.
My only mistake, I did not write it down in my FreeBSD note files.

The file I'm trying to mount is ad0s1 (windows 98). FreeBSD is mounted on ad0s2.
I have read all the MOUNT man pages. Maybe a little too complex for me. Please
tell me the one line command.

Hi,

don't know much about your problem and the errors you get. For me,
mounting ntfs, the command 'mount -t ntfs /dev/ad0s1 /mnt' works. So
should in your case the command:

mount -t msdos /dev/ad0s1 /mnt

do it.

As i can see, you've build your custom kernel. Have a look whether you
have included the line:
options MSDOSFS #MSDOS Filesystem
in your configuration file.

hi,

if you are using ufs2 an your FBSD Box, than Knoppix (like every Linux)
can't handle that. ufs works.

That does not seem to be a very exotic configuration. Try to run
'xf86cfg' to configure X. That should do it.

I remember a long while ago, maybe two or three years, there was a

If someone could drop me a pointer, or refer me to any other sound and
