Gnome green screen of death
Good afternoon, dear FreeBSD enthusiast. I have installed X11 and Gnome on my computer equipped with FreeBSD 9.1. The X11 and Gnome packages were taken from the d.v.d.-r.o.m. that contained the operating system. The computer is an H.P. Z220 with an Intel Xeon quad-core processor. I do not want Gnome to start automatically on bootup. I wish to call it from the command line on the local console. When I have finished working with Gnome, I expect the operating system to return me to console session from which Gnome was called. I have started Gnome with the command "exec gdm-session". I do not know if the "exec" keyword is necessary, but it worked. When I am finished working with Gnome, I click on the logoff (or logout?) button. The screen turns solid green with none of icons, characters, image, or splash. The computer does not respond to the keyboard. When I cut the power to the computer, and then reboot, I receive a sequence of messages complaining that ada0s3a, ada0s3d, and so on, are corrupt, and that I must run fdsk. What am I doing wrong here? The following error messages, which are shown only partially because they flash quickly on the screen, appear before Gnome starts: a) Authority server root file does not exist b) .../serverauth.1119doc does not exist c) X.authority does not exist d) ** (gnome-session:1121): WARNING **: Cannot open display: On reboot, e) The file entitled root/.xsession-errors contains 368 lines, including the following: e1) DEBUG:GsmAutostartAppp This program is not intended to be run as root e2) gnome-session: Fatal IO error 35 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0. e3) Window manager warning fatal IO error 35 (resource temporarily unavailable) on display ':0'. Any and all comments and suggestions will be appreciated. Good afternoon, dear FreeBSD enthusiasts. Is there anyone who has attempted to install a TP-LINK TL-WDN4800 p.c.i.-express wireless network interface card? I am using FreeBSD 9.1 on a Hewlett-Packard xw4400 workstation. The card works perfectly under Windows XP. However, it seems that the FreeBSD operating system does not even recognize the existence of the device; at least, I cannot find any mention of it in the dmesg.boot file. Any and all comments or suggestions will be appreciated. Also, many thanks to those of you who have responded to my previous inquiries. Yours truly, Newby Lee P.S. Installing 9.1 without re-partitioning hard drive
Good evening, Free BSD enthusiasts. Thank you to each of the several people who have responded to my previous messages. I have made significant progress, but am now flummoxed at the installation of the boot loader. The handbook says to run this command, "boot0cfg -B ad0". When I run this command, I get the following error message: "Unable to get providername for ad0". What is a provider name? How do I determine the provider name for ad0? How do I communicate that information to boot0cfg? I know that this problem has something to do with the "geom" command, but the "man geom" goes on for many pages. While I think the answer may be in there somewhere, I could not find it. Any and all comments will be appreciated. Installing 9.1 without re-partitioning hard drive
Good afternoon, FreeBSD enthusiasts. I am attempting to install FreeBSD 9.1 on a dual-boot configuration with Windows XP. I am using bsdinstall. I do not wish for the partition table to be changed. How do I instruct bsdinstall to skip the re-partitioning step? It gives an error message that it cannot write a certain file because the medium is write-only. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Yours truly, Newby Lee I forgot to mention some additional facts: The FreeBSD operating system is being installed from a d.v.d. I partitioned the hard drive into two equal partitions before re-installing Windows XP. Also, the following cryptic instruction was given to me by the bsdinstall program: "When finished, mount the system at /mnt and place an fstab file for the new system at tmp/bsdinstall_etc/fstab. Then type "exit". Please, can anyone explain to me what this instruction is telling me to do, and give me some details as to how to perform these tasks? Perhaps, also explain to me why I am supposed to do these things? How do I mount the system at /mnt? How do I compose an fstab file? How do I place the fstab file at tmp/bsdinstall_etc/fstab, a directory that does not exist until the filesystem is built? If the answers to any of these questions are explained in writing anywhere, please tell me where to look. Thank you. FreeBSD 9 and Windows XP
Good afternoon, FreeBSD enthusiasts. Can FreeBSD 9.1 be installed on a computer on which Windows XP currently resides? If so, how can this installation be done? In particular, is there a way to install 9.1 so that it can be booted from the traditional master boot record? It is important that, when I am done, I can still boot to Windows XP, as I must run some applications not available on FreeBSD. If the idea I am proposing is not feasible with version 9.1, will it work with 8.3? Any comments are appreciated. If this question has already been asked many times before, please just let me know where to look to find the answer. Thanks. FreeBSD 8.2 Add second hard drive multi-boot
Good morning, FreeBSD enthusiasts. On my Hewlett-Packard xw4400 workstation, I had one hard drive. I partitioned it with two slices, the first one for FreeBSD 8.2 with its native file system, and the second one for a future re-installation of Windows XP, to be formatted with NTFS file system. FreeBSD 8.2 was then installed. The Windows XP re-installation has not yet taken place. Recently, I installed a second hard drive on the machine that was already formatted with two slices, both NTFS. Already installed on the first of these slices is the Windows XP operating system with a special application program. Already installed on the second slice is data. It is my understanding that the FreeBSD loader is supposed to be able to load any operating system. Upon power-up, the FreeBSD loader presents the following screen: F1 Win F2 FreeBSD F5 Drive 1 F6 PXE If I depress F1, I receive the response "BOOTMGR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart." If I depress F2, FreeBSD loads normally. If I depress F5, I receive the response "Missing operatin system." How can I get the FreeBSD loader to load the Windows XP operating system from the second hard drive? The G.P.T. disklabel is not used by either of these operating systems, so I do not believe that that is the problem. Although the FreeBSD operating system seems to see the second hard drive, it does not mount it upon startup. It does not appear in the fstab file. I attempted to mount it manually using the mount command, without success, just to see if any of the data files could be read. I ran fsidk -B on the zeroeth sector of the second hard drive, but that did not seem to help. I know that this type of issue comes up repeatedly in the mailing lists, some of which I have read, but I am flummoxed. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. Installing FreeBSD ver. 8.2
Greetings, dear FreeBSD enthusiast. I am tearing my hair out trying to get FreeBSD 8.2 operating on my Hewlett-Packard xw4400 workstation. I am a newcomer to FreeBSD. This workstation is used by several different people. Normally, only one of them is logged in at any given time. I have several questions and concerns. (1) Does anyone know how to get FreeBSD to read the motherboard name? This name, on an xw4400, starts with "HP" followed by a eleven digits, and is given in Windows XP as "Full Computer Name" on the "Computer Name" tab of the "System Properties" window. Among other purposes, this name is used by Novell network operating system to distinguish hosts on a subnet. (2) I cannot get the "find" command to locate files that I believe were installed at the time of sysinstall. If I understand the Handbook correctly, when one runs "find" from the "/" directory, it is supposed to inspect all directories and subdirectories of all partitions, which it is not doing. What concept am I missing here? (3) I thought that I would obtain a better understanding of the file system by running "man heir." This command runs fine under "sh." When I switch to my preferred shell, which is "bash," I type, and receive echo on the screen, "man hei." As soon as I depress "r," the entire previously entered command echos to the screen, starting where the "r" should have appeared. In checking the bash manual, it says that this response is correct for "control-r." I could not find "non-shift-r" to be called out as a command. Am I doing something wrong? Is this a hardware bug? Is this a software bug? Is there something that needs to be defined or undefined in a configuration file? (4) Not having very good luck with the "find" command, I thought I would try to use the "locate" command. To use this command, one must create a database. On www.us-webmasters.com, I read that this database could be constructed by running the command "#usr/libexec/locate.updatedb." I entered "cd" to get to this directory, I entered "ls -lt" to read the directory and to verify that it contained a file named "locate.updatedb," which it did. But when I entered "locate.updatedb" at the command prompt, I received the response "command not found." Why can the command shell not find the command when "ls" clearly indicates it to exist in the current directory? How do I, as a user, distinguish an executable binary file from a data file? FreeBSD does not seem to use file extension labels for this purpose. (5) What device driver must be installed for the sound board to be able to receive a m.i.d.i. over u.s.b. signal? This signal would be generated by a musician's keyboard, and would control a music synthesizer application, to be installed. I could find no mention of this topic in the Handbook. (6) In the book "Absolute FreeBSD" by Urban and Tiemann, I found a two line command to cause the bash prompt to display the file path and current directory. Unfortunately, the text is quite unclear as to the name of the file to which these line are to be added, or the directory in which this file is located. I assume that somewhere there must be login configuration files, bearing each user's name, that give his or her shell configuration instructions. What are the names of such files, and where are they located? Any and all comments and instruction on these points are sorely needed and will be much appreciated. Special thanks to those who responded to my previous message on this general topic. Installing FreeBSD ver. 8.2
Good evening, dear FreeBSD enthusiast. I am a newcomer, and have installed FreeBSD 8.2 on a Hewlett-Packard xw4400. After many hours of frustration, I am tearing my hair out. I want my system to include an M-Audio Delta 1010LT sound card, MIDI over USB driver, X-windows, and Gnome. The instructions in the handbook and on-disk man do not seem to apply to this version of FreeBSD, or at least I do not seem to know how to apply them. I type "find sound," or "find pcm," or find snd_envy24," or "find x11," or "find gnome," and receive either a blank response, or response of "file does not exist" to all of these queries. All of these items were supposedly installed at the time of system configuration, but as to where, I cannot seem to determine. The gnome installation took twice as long as installation of everything else. Where did sysinstall install it? How do I get it to start? The response to "startx" is "file does not exit." I realize that I may be missing something o b! vious. 8.1-release Western Digital My Book Mirror Edition u.s.b. 2.0 drive
Good evening, dear FreeBSD enthusiast. I seem to be flummoxed by the FreeBSD website. I am trying to discover the list of supported devices for 8.1-release, which I know exists, but I do not seem to be able to find. In particular, does this version of FreeBSD support a Western Digital My Book Mirror Edition u.s.b. 2.0 external hard drive? It is a RAID-1 drive, although I have not been able to determine if the RAID is created in software or hardware. If 8.1-release does not support this device, what is the most similar u.s.b.
