In addition to being a FreeBSD enthusiast, I am also a Minix enthusiast. I've learned a great deal about how UNIX works by hacking the Minix OS myself. A by-product of my hacks was the development of a FreeBSD kernel module that impliments the Minix Version 2 file system. The latest release that it runs on is FreeBSD 4.6.x. My question is whether the FreeBSD community is interested in such a module? If so, then how does one go about submitting a kernel module for evaluation and possible inclusion in the source? My impression is that the Minix fs is a little simplistic perhaps for inclusion in the FreeBSD source. If so, then is it possible to submit it as a port? I have never seen an example of a kernel module that was submitted as a port, however. I really hate to bother you - maybe it's something simple. I'm loading FreeBSD 4.5 from a CD obatined from a Sam's Unleashed publication "FreeBSD Unleashed", authors Michael Urban and Brian Tiemann. This all takes place during configuration after selecting the mouse, keyboard, graphics card and screen size. I: click on "done" Screen: Attempting to start server then screen: Unable to start X server Press enter to reconfigure I: press enter Screen displays: very large X in middle of scree on a background of large white dots. I asked almost the exact same question a month ago, and more recently a few days ago. Apparently no one has been able to get xdm to work across a network in FreeBSD, or they felt it was some rite of passage and didn't want to spoil the surprise. Having tried for a month to get it to work correctly, I suspect the former. I have a very similar setup, except I plan to use minimalist FreeBSD systems to connect to the server. The terminals I am attempting to setup are pure X terminals, and I plan to have them display a logon prompt to the server directly. My server does have a keyboard and CRT, but they are stowed away in a wiring closet. Here is what I do know. You can configure the XDMCP server (xdm) fairly easily on the server. It involves adding a script to /usr/local/etc/rc.d or modifying rc.conf to start it. You will need to modify Xaccess in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/lib/xdm (I believe), and remove a comment to allow your X servers to connect. On the server (or client depending on your POV), you run xdm --broadcast -and it should pick up the first server it finds. Unfortunately, I haven't had any luck getting xdm to work either at the console or from the terminals as yet. I sometimes manage to get a login prompt, but the login always fails. If you figure out, I'd like to know how you did it - and I'll likewise remember you if I manage to work it out. Good luck, Seth Henry Date: Mon, 23 Dec 2002 13:09:26 -0800 (PST) From: Shvetima Gulati <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: simple xdm setup Hi all, I want to set up my X configuration as follows: 1) I want all clients (people) to log in to machine 'Server'using the GUI login. This brings them to their desktop. Typically these people are on windows machines running X servers such as eXceed or X-Win32. Some might be tunneling through ssh (port forwarding)so they would need to connect to local displays? 2) There is no physical keyboard or mouse attached to 'Server' 3) for administration purposes the command line is adequate, so there is no need for a GUI console. Essentially I want the PCs to function like dumb terminals running X displays. This is a fairly common scenario right ? How do I set up xdm for this? I searched the web but clear info was very sparse for FreeBSD (I am on 4.6.2). All pointers/help appreciated. Thanks, Shv. I am no hard disk guru, but last thing I remember is that a low-level format on an IDE disk is a sure way to hose your entire disk. I'd say, strip all pertinent data off of it, and get yourself a new hard disk. hi, i have been reading about usb device for the past 2 weeks and i did not find what i wanted and wondered if you could give me a tip on how or where i could find the info. eia 232 (db 9) to usb because the mechanical spec is 4 wire for usb (1 ground, 1Vbus, D+ and D-) +/- 400mv between the two state and that eia 232 uses tx and rx (pin 2 and 3) i wounder how they manage to put the data on D+ and D- and then switch to Rx with the same two wire...(D+ D-) so just to make it clear... D+ D- is tx and rx at the same time so this is where i get lost. if you can clarify or help in any way thank you Bernard Deroy [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message

No. The best solution is to "port" iptraf, by making the necessary changes, and then save the differences in proper patch files. The existing ports can provide thousands of examples of how this should be done to be easy to add as a port to the collection :) To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message

What else needs to be open for the make command to work? Thank you, Michelle I believe it likes to use port 5999 for cvsuping. I am able to use cvsup with our firewall. The problem is when actually trying to install the software using the make command since the make command tries to fetch the source tarball from a remote server using ftp. I cannot get ftp to dowload data through our firewall. Is it possible to use the make command without opening up our firewall completely or is it best to put the source tarballs in /usr/ports/distfiles manually? I had the same problem... This is how to fix it. First, go back into ports and do a "makde deinstall" and then a "make clean" to get rid of your previous make configuration stuff. Then run "make" in the mod_php4 dir and go through the little configuration program for PHP module. Make sure that you do not check both imap and imap ssl since they are exclusive. Also, do not get the normal and ssl versions of any of the options given. Then, after you finish the make, do a make install and it will load.
