Just create a typical partitioning scheme for a web server, and keep the
location of the logs and swap close to or at the outside of your disk.
Going from the outside of the disk inward, you would have: / (small), swap,
/www-jails, and so on. If you are going to have some heavy sites consider
two disks: one for system and web content files and the other for access
logs. You may want to look into turning off access time updates on your web
content and log files.

That's because the mini-iso doesn't contain any packages. However,
apart from installing some third party packages, you have, in fact,
successfully installed FreeBSD.

I suggest that you quit out of sysinstall, boot up your system in
FreeBSD, log in, make sure you set up the networking correctly and:

Either: install the cvsup-without-gui port by:

# pkg_add -r cvsup-without-gui

Then use cvsup(1) to pull down the latest ports tree (see Appendix A.5
of the handbook for instructions:
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/cvsup.html)
and install the extra software that you want via the ports(7) system.
Each time you update the ports tree, remember to run 'make index' to
regenerate the INDEX file. That takes a little time, as it has to
chew through about 9,100 ports and sort out all of the dependencies
and so forth.

Highly recommended (if you choose this route) that the first port
you install should be sysutils/portupgrade, then use portupgrade to
install everything else.

Or: from within FreeBSD, run sysinstall -- for 4.{8,9} it's
/stand/sysinstall, for 5.x it's /usr/sbin/sysinstall, go into the
Options section, set your installation media to FTP, choose a nearby
FTP server, then go into the 'Configuration' section and 'Packages'
within that. This will download the packages/INDEX from the FTP
server and give you a fairly easy way to install what packages you
require.

Cheers,

Matthew

Not able to finish new 4.8 install on Compaq Alphaserver DS20

2003-09-08 Thread Gavin Hubbard
Hello

I am new to *BSD and I'm doing a FreeBSD 4.8 installation for the first
time. My target system is my Compaq Alpahserver DS20 (dual 500MHz EV6, 2GB
RAM, 4x4GB RAID 0+1 and 2x9GB RAID 1 on storage works RA230 controller,
CDROM + DDS3 on Symbios UW + ethernet controller, plus some misc I/O
options). My installation media is a 4.8 ISO image I downloaded and burned
to CD-R. The system was formerly running VMS in a development environment
and is known to be fully operational.

After moving the Symbios controller onto another system hose I was able to
get the system to boot into the Sysinstall utility from the local CDROM
drive *using the miniroot disk). I am then able to create the file-systems,
nominate the distribution I require, choose an installation source, and
begin the installation. I have used the auto-layout tool for the 8GB RAID
0+1 array and created a new 9GB /usr filesystem on the RAID 1 array.

The problem I have is that once Sysinstall keeps stopping towards the end of
the installtion with the following message:

"Unable to get packages/INDEX file from selected media."

"This may be because the packages collection is not available on the
distribution media you've chosen, most likely an FTP site without the
packages collection mirrored. Please verify that you media, or your path to
the media, is correct and try again."

The curious thing is that this always happens at the end of the
installation, regardless of the particular distribution I have chosen. If I
switch to the holographic shell on ALT-F4 and run ls on /cdrom I get an
empty directory listing. If I try "mount /cdrom" I get a "cd9660: /dev/cd0c:
Device busy" message. This must be why it can no longer see the installation
path.

Once I hit "Ok" to the warning message I get a message that says "The commit
operation completed with errors. Not updating /etc files." and I am returned
to Sysinstall. Interestingly, if I try to simply recommit the distribution
in the custom installation options menu I get the same warning. However if I
reselect a distribution and then run commit, it will repeat the installation
tasks but stop at exactly the same point (or a different point if I choose
another distribution or choose to install ports).

I have searched on google before posting here and the only reference I found
suggested that it might be a good idea to check the CDROM drive in another
machine or replace it with a new drive. I have tested this drive on another
machine and it seems to be working fine.

Thank-you in advance for your assistance in solving this problem.

Regards,

Gavin Hubbard

It could be that one of your floppies is bad or that some bad code has
entered the floppie images. (I had the later one time.) The solution for
the first option is to get new floppies, the solution for the later is
to use floppies of earlies version, install that and then upgrade.

Ouch! This sounds like a problem I had with an
Abit/AMD
motherboard (or is `mainboard' the trendy term?).
Mine
was costly; when FreeBSD 4.6 attempted to initialize
one of the NICs, it apparently wiped the field-
upgradable BIOS, destroying the board. It wouldn't
even POST. I went through two of them (one at a
vendor's expense, save shipping). I finally switched
to a more expensive Gigabit/Intel board. I believe
the ABit board (a KD7 with GigE) had an Intel NIC,
so it appears that something else, perhaps peculiar
to the mobo or its maker, is being mistaken for a NIC.

You can find the report in the FreeBSD bugs archive
by searching for ``terribile'', all fields.

4.8 install issues with Neatgear FA310TX NIC

I downloaded and burned the two ISO for 4.8. I have no issues with the
media and have ³completed² an install. The NIC is not being recognized
however, it is a Netgear FA310TX. I haven¹t had issues with older versions
of FreeBSD... The kernel is not recognizing and NIC driver... I tried to
manually select each Network driver in UserConfig with no success when I
select AT&T Starlan 10 and EN100, 3c507, NI5210 I get a conflict with with
the PC-card controller this is not a laptop so I don¹t know why the kernel
is trying to install that... The light on my router/hub is green so the
cable is good...

Any ideas? I am going to run a low traffic site on this with Apache2 and
php, maybe MySQL, would moving to 5.0 be adequate (5.0 recognized the driver
right away)

I have what might be some interesting input on this issue.

I have a Linksys LNE100TX nic (PCI) in my FBSD system.
I do an FTP install.
When I get to the Kernel Config screen, I choose the last network
adapter in the list, I think it's an SMC, and enter the proper I/O
address (the default IRQ is correct). I can then configure the network
and continue my FTP install without any problems.

I've only been running FBSD for a few weeks (this time), and I run a
custom report every day that does ifconfig, and I see no problems at
all. I cvsup every day with no nic related errors, so I cannot see any
problems with using the tx driver.

I would be interested in knowing the proper procedure to change drivers
after install completes.
I assume I would have to recompile the kernel, disable the tx driver and
enable the dc driver.

Kingston KNE110TX

Is there anything else I should be aware of?

The network adapters listed in the kernel config are ISA NICs that require
configuration. If you have a PCI NIC that is supported, it will be
auto-detected.

When your system boots, all of the device probe information is saved and can
be displayed by the "dmesg" program. Are there any lines in your dmesg
output that say "unknown device"? It's possible that while you have a
RealTek-based card, the FreeBSD driver doesn't recognize it as a compatible
card.

They are. The initial kernel config screen is for ISA and non-PNP devices which
might cause hardware conflicts (it lets you disable devices).

Newer PCI cards aren't shown therem but I bet if you do a "dmesg | less", you'll
find that your NIC is recognized fine. Or try doing a "dhclient" and see
whether you can get a DHCP lease.

Hmm. Bad CD? Anyway, if you've got enough of an install to have a working
system, you can always "make world" to be sure that nothing is missing.

I had no trouble following the manual to get the installation going,

I just tried to install new 4.8 FreeBSD from ISO images. But it still ends

acd0: read data overrun 12/0

I have Compaq Pentium PRO, 200 MHz with 64 MB RAM, with Symbios Logic 53C875
SCSI adapter and Compaq ST32171W HDD (2 GB), with Compaq Neteligent 10/100
TX PCI UTP and 3Com590 NICs, Matrox MGA Millenium.
My installation still end during probing all devices...

There is no ATA HDD, CD was connected first as Cable Select, after install
failure as Primary Master, after install failure replaced with another
CD-ROM unit with same results.

PC normally boots from this CD, but then install fails.

What is the problem and how can I solve it ?

PLEASE HELP..

I don't know if this is at all the same issue, but I have a laptop,
whose CDROM stops spinning when it thinks it isn't used, and if
the CDROM isn't spinning, sysinstall will spit out errors when it
tries to use it. A second or so later, the drive will start
spinning, and if I re-try the sysinstall action that needed the
CDROM, it will succeed. (Sorry, I don't recall the error messages;
this was during install, I've misplaced my notebook, and I've had
no similar problems since completing install.)

I've had similar problems to this in the past with various different
releases. The only common factor in these failed installs has been that I
had to change settings (network, partitioning, labels, install options)
after starting the install. And the only reliable way I have found to
correct it is to simply restart the install from scratch - it seems the
installer gets confused if you change any of its settings after the fact.

Not much help, I know, but at least you know someone else has had problems!

4.8 install

2003-06-05 Thread Mark Redding
Hi,

Has anyone else reported problems when trying to install the 4.8-RELEASE
version booting from floppy disks and then installing via passive ftp ? I
tried it a number of time yesterday, each time the install returned 'write
errors' soon into the "bin" extract, and when I checked using 'df' on the
emergency shell, it had filled up the small memory disk rather than writing
to the real disks mounted under /mnt/...

I've now "back-tracked" and installed 4.7-RELEASE using the same mechanisms
on the same two machines and they work without any problems (as ever).

regards,

Mark Redding.
