Sysinstall + CVSup or just CVSup?
Hi, I've installed FreeBSD 5.3 using the minimum install option, and would like to immediately install the ports collection. What I've done in the past is sysinstall via ftp and then CVSup to update. Is that insane? Can I just CVSup and forget about the sysinstall? Is one method quicker than the other? Maybe there's a better method altogether... The short answer is that you can do it, and it will probably cost you some time. The slightly longer answer is that how much time you save (by downloading the ports tree before doing a cvsup on it) depends on a number of factors, most notably your network bandwidth. There also are a few possible "gotchas" to keep in mind if you "adopt" an existing tree this way: see the CVSUP FAQ at http://www.cvsup.org/faq.html and particularly the questions in the "Recipes" section. -- Lowell Gilbert, embedded/networking software engineer, Boston area http://be-well.ilk.org/~lowell/ ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Ok, so, I know I need to edit a supfile and I have found all the examples. But it seems to me that it is advisable to put my own edited supfile in a particular directory. What is the best or more common practice? Maybe in the base directory: i.e., /usr/local/etc/cvsup/ ? Note that I will not be using the gui. To clarify, in /usr/src, do this: make buildworld make buildkernel KERNCONF=WHATEVER (your edited conf file) make installkernel KERNCONF=WHATEVER mergemaster -p make installworld mergemaster See http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/kernelconfig-building.html (URL may have wrapped) just to be sure you haven't forgotten anything. A couple of notes: The supfile you are using does NOT update your ports. Speaking of which, using a refuse file is not "recommended" because . The kernel name doesn't really matter if you do not swap kernels between machines and use different names (e.g. KERN1, KERN2) so you know which one you're running. About cvsup
Dear All, Some newbie question to ask: I want to update my kernel sources on 5.3-Release. I have used cvsup with src-sys uncommented on the supfile. After it finishes its job, it just creates the ,v and Attic files and no update is happend on my sources. There are even new files (,v) and no file creation is happend. I just see the ,v files when cvsup finishes its jobs and says finished successfully. And in the ,v file i can see the changes. What i can do to update my kernel files? Did I have to build the world ? However, since the install never asked me anything about ports, I'm hesitant that I have not properly made them available via cvsup. I've been throught the FreeBSD Handbook, and the "cvsup.org" website - absolutely no help at all. CVSup questions
I have a system that right now I'm using to learn FreeBSD. I want to go through the update process that I assume I'll have to follow regularly once the computer is up and running as a web and mail server. Right now I'm not concerned about backups; that's my next project. I'm attempting to follow "Using CVSup" and learn how CVSup works. See: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/cvsup.html Questions about CVSup: 1. Where should I place supfile? Obviously I could put it anywhere and make it work, but is there a usual place for it? I can't find where the manual makes a suggestion. Do I have a need for more than one supfile? 2. I am running 5.3 RELEASE. It appears that if I specify "*default tag=." that I will be getting updates from "current". Is this what I should do, given that I want to stay current on security and bug fixes, but I don't (at this time) intend to get involved with beta testing? Or should I specify *default tag=RELENG_5_3? And, if I do that, will the ports be updated, including adding new ports? 3. The tutorial at http://www.us-webmasters.com/FreeBSD/Install/ after item 68 describes CVSup. It suggests using the supfile /usr/share/examples/cvsup/ports-supfile which gets the "ports-all" collection. However, the Using CVSup manual says to get "src-all", that includes ports-all. Is there some reason to use ports-all, not src-all as suggested by the handbook? 4. The tutorial (see 3 above) item 97 concludes, after running cvsup, "FreeBSD is installed, CONGRATULATIONS!" Isn't this a bit premature? It seems to me that at that point I need to rebuild world per http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/book.html#MAKEWORLD to apply the new files and bring the system up to date. CVSup questions
When 5.3 RELEASE first came out, I used the miniinst.iso CD to install 5.3 on a spare computer for tests. It installed ok and based on how it worked, I updated my primary computer. Now I have an application for the spare computer, and I thought I would use it to verify my understanding of how CVSup works. I installed cvsup-without-gui. pkg_info shows cvsup installed. pkg_version, however, failed. "Unable to open INDEX in pkg_do" I found that pkg_version http://www.FreeBSD.org/ports/INDEX-5 ran ok, so the problem was the missing /usr/ports/INDEX-5. In fact there was no /usr/ports directory. I built src-all and ports-all. Now, there is a /usr/ports directory and and lots of directories and files therein. In /usr/ports, I did make fetchindex. It failed. The /usr/ports/Makeindex file was really Makeindex,v. I copied it as Makeindex, and tried make fetchindex again. It showed many errors, finally "fatal errors encountered -- cannot continue". Obviously I need to start over, this time using the CD with the full iso image. I'll do that, but What did I do wrong? CVSUP question
Greetings, I installed 5.1-release on a box. I installed cvsup from ports. I then copied /usr/src/share/examples/cvsup/stable-sup /etc. I changed the file to point to a CVS server near me. The notes I was reading were specific to Freebsd 4.6. Since I had 5.1 installed I guessed I needed to choose RELENG_5 to track 5.1 stable. I then added the following lines to the bottom of the file: ports-www tag=. ports-net tag=. ports-security tag=. ports-sysutils tag=. I then did a cvsup /etc/stable-supfile. The system trundled away, showing on the screen file deletions, etc. When it finished (without any errors, and telling me it was sucessful), I tried to cd /usr/src. The directory was gone. Hmm So, I modified the stable-sup file to use RELENG_5_1. Then did a cvsup /etc/stable-supfile. But once it connected to the cvsup server, it just hung. If I want to track 5.1-stable, what should I use ? thanks, Darryl ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
cvsup stable
Hi all, I'd like to raise a question on cvsup. I'm an enthousiastic user of cvsup to keep up to date. I always use to stable-supfile Last week I installed a 4.9 machine ran a cvsup. Rebuilt the whole world and my kernel and ... ended up with 4.10 beta. A few aday later ran a cvsup again. Same story. I know FBSD is stable but do I have to rely beta's. CVSUP server
Hi! Can you tell me thesize of FreeBSD src+ports. Couple of guys including me are exploring the possibility to run a CVSUP server in Nulgaria and update it once per day. What are the requierements for CVS machines and is it acceptable the machine to be accessible from the destination country only. ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/ports/ports.tar.gz This points to the compressed file which contains the complete ports tree. you mis-understood my question, I do not say I was trying to find the single compressed file of the complete ports tree. Here is my question again When I use cvsup to download the ports config files (by category), it does not display the directory path it's using on the server. How can I find the directory path cvsup defaults to using? The implied meaning here is what is the cvsup program using for an directory path? However, in FreeBSD's case, the configuration files for cvsupd, as it is run on FreeBSD servers, is available via cvsup, according to: http://www.cvsup.org/faq.html#serversample You might be able to grab the FreeBSD project's config files for cvsupd using that, and extract from those files the information you're interested in. -Chris ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

That still leaves a bazillion of them out there. I have never used it, so I can help with mod_php4. The patch files in /usr/ports/devel/gettext/files are not consistent with the current gettext source code. If you patched them, spaces for a , for example, won't match. You need a current cvsup of ports-all. Occasionally, you have to cd in and rm the files and re-cvsup. The Makefile.in.rej will tell you what it didn't like and may give you and idea of what to do. I am guessing, but it should some where in the path of /usr/ports/devel/gettext/work/gettext-0.12.1 Kent > > - Original Message - > From: "Kent Stewart" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: "Toru" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; > <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Sent: Saturday, December 20, 2003 2:21 AM > Subject: Re: CVSup > > > On Saturday 20 December 2003 02:03 am, Toru wrote: > > > I am giving up installing CVSup. cvsup-mirror
Hi everyone :) I just installed cvsup-mirror. When it asked me about 'distributions' I was not entirely sure what that meant, so I accepted them all. I actually just need to create a mirror from which I can locally distribute 'src-all' and 'ports-all' using cvsup on my collection of local machines. Perhaps 'doc-all' would be nice too (later). Now, cvsup-mirror started running the distribution 'FreeBSD.cvs', and that seems to include docs, etc. Is that all I will need? What exactly are the other distributions, like 'FreeBSD-mail', etc? Finally, can I enable/disable the distributions simply by editing the value of 'distribs="...' in the file '/usr/local/etc/cvsup/config.sh'? Thanks. -- Regards, Patrick O'Reilly. When you report a problem, please explain in detail what you are trying to do in general, what you are doing in detail, and the symptoms of your problem (eg, error messages, verbatim or at least summarized). A bit about your environment might help too. So we don't have to guess or provide multiple answers for you to pick from. I don't even have a "pkg_install", so I can't help with that. If you have the set of packages on your hard disk or cdrom use something like this: mount /cdrom ls -l /cdrom/packages/All/*cvsup* pkg_add /cdrom/packages/All/cvsup-16.1f.tgz IF (and, of course, only if) your Internet connection is OK and the remote package server is running, I would guess from the examples in the handbook, that your "pkg_add -r cvsup" should work. But you might have to find a different server and use something like this (from the pkg_add manual): PACKAGEROOT=ftp://ftp3.FreeBSD.org pkg_add -r cvsup or you might have to locate the package file using ftp or web browers and then use something like this: cvsup ftp://ftp.FreeBSD.org/pub/FreeBSD/packages/All/cvsup-16.1f.tgz To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message

cvsup -> down?
Hey all. This seems like a really dumb question to me, but I'm having such a rough last two weeks that I'd rather be sure by sounding stupid, than by looking stupid. What I'm doing is upgrading a machine to RELEASE_5_1 (to take care of the recent arp problems) and I wasn't paying attention when I started cvsupping, and accidentally started it cvsupping to HEAD instead. I realized my mistake halfway through and canceled it. Then restarted it with the proper "tag=RELENG_5_1" Now, I'm looking at all the files that were checked out during the cvsup to RELENG_5_1 and I'm a bit nervious. I assume it's doing checkouts because it's easier than doing reverse diffs? (or reverse diffs aren't even possible?) While screwing this machine up wouldn't ruin my life, it would add considerable time to what it would take to get it to where I wanted it (which I can't really afford right now) So, my question is: Can anyone say with confidence that this machine will build a sane world/kernel for RELENG_5_1 after what I did? If not, I'll just wipe out /usr/src and install a fresh source and re-cvsup. -- Bill Moran Potential Technologies http://www.potentialtech.com ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

CVSup question
I am trying to upgrade a 4.5 box to RELENG_4, but it doesn't appear that I am getting all of the required info. Here's my command, and supfile: # cvsup -L 2 -g /etc/supfile *default tag=RELENG_4 *default host=cvsup2.freebsd.org *default release=cvs *default base=/usr/local/etc/cvsup *default prefix=/usr/src *default delete use-rel-suffix src-all ports-all When it says it is complete, this is the list of my /usr/src/directory: drwxr-xr-x 7 root wheel 512 Nov 14 16:46 crypto drwxr-xr-x 7 root wheel 512 Nov 14 16:46 kerberos5 drwxr-xr-x 8 root wheel 512 Nov 14 16:46 kerberosIV drwxr-xr-x 6 root wheel 512 Nov 14 16:46 secure drwxr-xr-x 47 root wheel 1024 Nov 14 21:51 sys Do I have to install all the sources off of the CD at install time to be able to update the source in order to buildworld? BTW, the error is "don't know how to make buildworld" which is understood, as there is no Makefile being cvsup'd. After running cvsup, you'll have a collection of Makefiles, patches etc. under /usr/ports all set up to download the source and build the latest versions of any software you want to install. Running cvsup is just the preliminary to the whole process of updating any ports that are out of date. If you've installed portupgrade(1) [ports/sysutils/portupgrade] bringing all your installed ports up to date pretty much boils down to: cvsup -g -L 2 ports-supfile portsdb -Uu pkgdb -Fvu portupgrade -rRNia [the last two commands are interactive as shown: they'll prompt you to confirm any actions that modify your system] Cheers, Matthew -- Dr Matthew J Seaman MA, D.Phil. 26 The Paddocks Savill Way PGP: http://www.infracaninophile.co.uk/pgpkey Marlow Tel: +44 1628 476614 Bucks., SL7 1TH UK To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message

cvsup question
This is more of a minor annoyance, but I can't seem to fix it. I'm tired of portsdb -Uu spitting out errors regarding not finding japanese ports. I initially had all of the non-english ports in my refuse file, since i have zero use for them, but i've removed these entries with the thinking that 'I have ample space and it doesn't hurt for them to be there if i can quiet the output of portsdb -Uu' but using 'ports-all' in my ports-supfile isn't grabbing the japanese, or any other language for that matter (except portuguese and hungarian). Like I said, this is more of a minor annoyance, but if anyone knows a fix, that would be great. thanks. .daniel.schrock To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message

"It's a feature, not a bug." :-) If you have lots of disk space, you can try using CVSup to mirror the CVS repository and let CVS merge your changes: * Omit the `tag' in your cvsupfile. Just don't put one in. * Change the `prefix' to a place where you have a lot of space, such as /usr/local/portcvs. (Do NOT use /usr!) * Cvsup as normal. * You should find a lot of files in /usr/local/portcvs/ports/* with names ending in ",v". These are the CVS files. * Back up your ports tree (mv /usr/ports /usr/ports.old). * cd /usr && cvs -d /usr/local/portcvs checkout ports * If all went well, you have a ports tree. Now, always cvsup this way. To update your main ports tree, do `cd /usr/ports && cvs -d /usr/local/portcvs update'. This will try and merge your changes. This may have been a bit difficult to understand. I'm sure someone else can explain it better than I :-) -- Josh > > Thanks > > ___ > [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list > http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions > To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
Re: CVSUP
No, that was fine. I understand what you are saying. I was actually thinking that myself, I was just wondering if anyone had any easier way. It's not a big deal really, I just change the default install dirs on one port. That means that I change all of 4 lines in a Makefile, I was just wondering. Thanks anyway man. I guess it would depend on the changes you were making but is the file /usr/local/etc/pkgtools.conf any use? If not, then I think mirroring the CVS tree is probably the way to go.
