I think your problem is this statement you made
 'i don't think it is working'

What do you mean by this?.

The command you used copied the image.iso file to the cd.
If you tried to boot from it of course it won't boot.
To be able to boot you have to uncompress to ISO file into an
FBSD directory tree format and the dd command does not do that.

It seems like I just did 'dd if=/dev/acd0c of=/home/image.iso' when I did
this and it worked fine.

i am usally doing a cat /dev/acd0c  filename.iso. works for me.
