Here is the procedure, taken from /usr/src/UPDATING. Also cvsup your ports and read /usr/ports/UPDATING. There are important things to do listed in both of them. And you need a valid tag or his /usr/src will be wipped clean. I would never run a full release because security fixes are never added but RELENG_5_3 would be all right.
