Sometime ago, maintainer has updated icu and the library version has been
bumped. He has refused to add in /usr/ports/UPDATING.

What can I do to solve this?

You have to reinstall all ports that depend on icu by use portupgrade or
portmaster.

# portupgrade -rf icu\*

or

# portmaster -r icu\*

You upgraded icu at some point past,
but did not upgrade some of the things
that depend on icu which gnome-panel
depend upon.

I would advise that you issue:
# portupgrade -fr icu*
although that will rebuild quite a bit.

upgrading gnome

2006-11-30 Thread Dan Sikorsky

freebsd 6.1
xorg 6.9

Hey, I have gnome 2.12

trying to upgrade to 2.16

i tried everything from pkg_add (obviously deleting the old one first)
to portmanager
to portinstall
to port upgrade
and building it from the ports tree..

things fail one major problem I was having was gail... but i think I
have beaten that because now i get another error, cant remember it at
the moment

but its irrelevant. I have broken my current gnome installation...

when i startx... it will load all my panels, and any app will run fine,
but the *desktop* its self is missing, including the background image.
If i go into Desktop Background, it will load, but still I cant right
click on the desktop, and there are no icons, and no way to add them

(they are however still listed in my usr/home/dan/Desktop )

I've managed to break all kinds of things, Realplyer wont work now,
because I unistalled my old linux base with portmaster
for example. does anybody know of a good way to WIPE gnome, and
rebuild it and its Dependant ports from the ground up?

I dont want to re-install my freebsd, as Ive worked very hard to get
everything from my M-audio sound card, my custom kernel, and
giant fat32 drives, to my apache server etc etc etc, im sure you are all
in the same boat if you are using freebsd

upgrading gnome

2006-11-30 Thread Dino Vliet
Hi Dan,

have you looked at /usr/ports/UPDATING after you have
updated your ports tree?
I had a lot of problems with this too because I didn't
read that file. However, this info helped me (from
/usr/ports/UPDATING):

20061014:
AFFECTS: All GTK+2 and GNOME users
  AUTHOR: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

GNOME has been updated to 2.16. All GTK+2 and GNOME
components have
been moved from X11BASE (/usr/X11R6) to LOCALBASE
(/usr/local). To
upgrade your GNOME desktop or/and other applications
you will need
  to use either sysutils/portupgrade or
sysutils/portmaster. To use
portmaster, make sure you have least 1.9 version to
have the
  upgrade succeed.

 Portupgrade users:
  pkgdb -Ff
  portupgrade -rf pkg-config\*

Upgrading GNOME

2005-07-27 Thread Frank Jahnke
I am upgrading Gnome from 2.4 to 2.10 with a clean install (I have
backups) as part of an upgrade from FreeBSD 5.2.1 to the 6.0 Beta (which
is working well, btw). I would like to preserve various settings from
my old system, including bookmarks, passwords, old email, contacts, and
various folders. How do I do so?

The upgrade is from Epiphany 1.4 to 2.2; Evolution is from 1.0.6 to
1.6.0. A simple-minded copying of the old files into their original
locations showed that both Epiphany and Evolution did not recognize
them. If there is a page describing the upgrade I'd be happy to follow
it if a link is provided.

Please copy me on any replies; I don't read both of these groups
regularly.

Thank you in advance!

You should restore your home directory, then let the applications handle
their settings migration.

OK -- so what settings files do I delete to get this to work?
Evolution's import facility, for example, did not recognize that any
email files existed. I suspected that some of the index files need to
be deleted, but before I do so I seek advice.

No files should need to be deleted. Just restore your entire home
directory as it was under GNOME 2.4, and run each application. If Evo
is not recognizing the old files, you may be out of luck.

upgrading Gnome components using portupgrade

2004-04-16 Thread sAndri Kok
Hi guys,

I have what I believe are Gnome components installed on my computer (gimp,
Gconf, gtk, glib, etc). I'm running portupgrade now and I read the message
that I should upgrade Gnome using the script provided by FreeBSD Gnome. The
question is, if I only have parts of Gnome installed, while I'm using
fluxbox as window manager, do I need to run the script? or is portupgrade
fine? my portupgrade is currently still running and I don't seem to
encounter any problem (yet).

Regards,

Andri Kok

I also run that way and from my experience the odds are pretty high that
something will be done out of order. I did a portupgrade -pufr glib to
do the upgrade and had a few problems that I had to manually update. I
understand from other comments that re-running the upgrade script makes
the update go faster than a -rf glib. If you look at ports that you
have installed that depend on glib, the list seems to go forever. I
don't know if a -pufrR glib would have prevented the problems but that
would have used even more computer time to do the update. I think the
AMD 2400+ needed something like 13 hours to do the update the way I did
it.

I personal would go for rebuild everything that depend on pkg-config
instead glib, because of libxml2, libxslt and etc that don't depend on
glib.

I think that is close to the overkill -rRfa. You only want to update the
ports that should be updated. It hasn't been that long since I did a
-rf expat. I feel strongly about updating all dependancies of
libraries. That is one of the fine features of make in the programming
world. If you modify a library, it updates everything that uses it. It
just isn't always necessary.
