RE: accessing BIOS and RAID info on old Compaqs

2006-11-06 Thread Brown, Steve
dn,

1. You probably already know this but technically, you should have started with
the Compaq Smart Start CDs. There's a Unix option on there too but I've never
used it so I'm not sure what the difference is specifically (never loaded BSD
or Linux on those). This would have taken you through the process of setting
the system clock, configuring the RAID array(s), etc.

2. If there are BSD/Linux tools available, you should be able to d/l them from
HP or they may be on the Compaq CDs.

BTW, you say you don't have the CDs for *all* the machines in question. In my
experience with our since retired ProLiant 5500s, 1850s, ML330s, and ML350s,
I've found that they can all use (and work the best with) the newer CD I have
which is Compaq SmartStart for Servers - Release 5.0. These systems are a
couple years different in age and I think the older ones shipped with Compaq
SmartStart for Servers - Release 4.60 at the earliest.

If you want to try the CD and need one, I can ftp the .iso to you.

Steve

Subject: accessing BIOS and RAID info on old Compaqs

Greetings. For FBSD 6.1 on old Compaq DL320 and 1850R machines:

1. Is there a way to access the system BIOS, either at boot time or
(preferably) from within FBSD? I'm specifically interested in seeing
what the system's hardware clock is set to.

2. Is there a way to monitor the Compaq Smart Array RAID controllers and
disks attached to them from within FBSD?

Smartmontools is great for monitoring disk health, but no good with
RAID. I don't have Compaq RAID CDs for all the machines in question, and
in any event would prefer to monitor disks from within FBSD if possible.

thanks

Re: accessing BIOS and RAID info on old Compaqs

2006-10-30 Thread George Fazio
Dave,

In answer to question 1, it's been a little while (at least 4 year) since I've
worked on Compaq gear. But, if memory serves me correctly, you hit F10 when
the cursor kicks from the left hand side of the screen to the right hand
side. This should be a relatively obvious change, and I believe it's also
accomanied by a system beep.

However, most of the older Compaq gear required a system partition and the
BIOS config was installed there. If you fdisk'd the drive and did not load
the Compaq system partition back in, you may have problems. That said, there
were a few system (espeically towards the end) that had a normal BIOS that
could be accessed without the system partition loaded. I'm fairly certain
that F10 was still the correct key to press in that case as well.

HP bought Compaq, and they may still have some of the legacy drivers and
software on the [HP] support site.

In answer to question 2, I'm a FBSD newbie and really have no idea on that
one.

Hope that helps.

George

Hi David,

I don't know of any online-monitoring, i.e. a utility that monitors
the smartarray controllers/disks on an ongoing basis.

However I know for sure that any smartarray-related messages (e.g. you
pull one of the disks configured in a RAID1 or have a drive failure)
end up in your syslog. From there you can periodically run grep over
the syslog, send mail-messages etc. to notify you of any smartarray
event.
