I don't use portsnap, so I just deleted /usr/ports after which I issued
the portupgrade -ai command again. No avail, still same error. Someone
more ideas?

Similar trouble.
Completly deleting /var/db/portsnap/ + /usr/ports and portsnap
again helps me.
