gnome screensaver

2004-02-09 Thread Duane Winner
Hello,

I've searched all over and posted a question to gnome mailing lists, and
still don't have an answer to this annoyance. Hopefully somebody here
might know a solution, even though this isn't freebsd-specific.

How can I fix the gnome screensaver so that it utilizes my full
1280x1024 screen when I'm docked and using my external monitor? When I
am using my laptop monitor (1024x768), the screen saver consumes the
entire screen, just as it should. But when I'm on my 1280x1024 monitor,
the Gnome screensaver only consumes 1024x768 area of the monitor,
leaving the remaining active desktop space visible.
I pretty sure that this is a gnome problem, because in the past, when I
used KDE, the screensaver worked fine. I also know that this has
nothing to do with freebsd config, because I had the same issue with
both Redhat9 and Fedora.

Again, I know that this is not FreeBSD problem, but I tried everywhere
else, and am shooting in the dark at this point.

Thanks for any input,
DW

gnome screensaver crashes

2008-02-10 Thread John L
On a nice fresh install of FreeBSD 6.3 and gnome, gnome-screensaver
crashes at X startup claiming that it can't talk to the dbus daemon,

even though the daemon is running.

Is this a known problem? It seems to be new in the latest version of X
and/or Gnome.

You need to post more information, such as your video card and what driver
you are using.

See the documentation.
I don't use the gnome version, but I have the following running at the
moment, which is the kind of thing you're looking for:
/usr/X11R6/bin/xscreensaver-hacks/hypercube -root -background midnightBlue

Security: gnome-screensaver VS. switch user

2011-02-13 Thread erikmccaskey64

People "usually" suspend their laptop, so that they can continue their work
when they open the laptop. OK!

Two choices [GNOME]:

1 - Menu -> Shut Down -> Suspend
in this case, the gnome-screensaver locks the PC. but the gnome-screensaver is
just a "normal process", and it could be killed e.g.:
http://securitytube.net/USB-Autorun-attacks-against-Linux-at-Shmoocon-2011-video.aspx
or using any method [video was just an example!!].

2 - Menu -> Log out -> Switch user -> Suspend
in this case, the GDM [???] protects the user [i mean it locks the PC from
other users]

Which one is more secure/safer?
