I reinstalled sources from sysinstall, and all works now..

Since this is the first one I have done, I wanted to learn the old
way..then the new...

Use the new way of building the kernel i.e.

make buildkernel KERNCONF=my_kernel_config_file
make installkernel KERNCONF=my_kernel_config_file

Are you sure you're running make in the right directory?

Nevertheless you might try building the Kernel the "New Way"
as it is described in

I am trying to build a new kernel to support the on board sound on my
motherboard.

When I try to " make depend " I get this error:

make: don't know how to make depend. Stop

Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated.
