This version of FreeBSD is old and unsupported.  You could try sending
email to the maintainer of the pkg_install port, but they're not
required to make their port work on old releases.  Best thing would be
for you to investigate upgrading to 4.10.

I've been investigating, but since this is a production server,
I am quite anxious about not botching this up.

Do you or anyone else have some tips or hints about doing
this 'conservatively'?
