problem with pcm (YMF744)...

2000-09-14 Thread Greg Rumple

I sent this to mobile about a week ago, but I realized that I guess it
really needs to go here. So here is the message again (for those of you
who have already seen it that is).

I have discovered a slight problem with the YMF744 drive under
4.1-STABLE. I am running on a Sony Vaio PCG-XG18 as of a few days ago
(last weekend to be exact), and have found that when playing realaudio
streams that some of them come out with just white noise, while others
come out sounding fine. So far what I have been able to determine is
the difference is one that works is 32k stero music, and the one that
doesn't is 16k music (whatever that means). I believe this is probably
mono related (I had a similar problem with Linux)...

Here is the information...

pcm0: port 0xfc8c-0xfc8f,0xfcc0-0xfcff mem
0xfedf8000-0xfedf irq 9 at device 9.0 on pci0

I have actually proven this to be mono related. I installed mpg123 and
if I execute "mpg123 -m file.mp3" I get white noise, and if I execute
"mpg123 file.mp3" it plays fine.

Thanks,

Greg

panic: kmem_malloc(-1077936128): kmem_map too small

2000-09-14 Thread Mitja Horvat

Hi,

I recently upgraded to 4.1-STABLE, and I had problems booting
the kernel since then. The problem occurs exactly when mountd
is started and begins to export filesystems. These are the
information I can get from the crash dump:

It seems to me like there's something wrong with exporting a filesystem.
In my case, I'm trying to export the / filesystem as shown in this
/etc/exports file:

/home -maproot=nobody -network 10.17 -mask 255.255.0.0
# /cdrom -maproot=root -ro -network 10.17 -mask 255.255.0.0

(Note, that I commented out /cdrom just in case, but it's the same
with or without it)

Anybody had similar experiences? I would really appreciate a patch
or that it gets fixed in the cvs tree as soon as possible.

(If this problem has been reported before I apologize, I subscribed
to freebsd-stable only today)

Thank your for your answers,
Mitja

Clean a mention about ft device from LINT please.

cutted from LINT:

Where should the linux paths be? They got added there when I (and many
others) had problems after installing linux_base 6.1 to make
Staroffice 5.1 work (IIRC the Linux ldconfig was reading
$LD_LIBRARY_PATH) although I forget all the gory details.

Bingo! That was it, old RP5 symlinks. I obviously forgot to remove
them when I u/g to RP7 (RP5 was not installed using the ports).
Curious though as to why I never saw these warnings before this last
make world.

ign0 (what is it?)

2000-09-14 Thread Andre Goeree

Hello,

I'm experimenting with 4.1-S on some old hardware (i586/60Mhz).
Everything except the ata-* drivers works (i'm using wdc).

Now, looking through dmesg, i find a completely new device which
AFIAK i have never seen before on this box (when it was running 3.4-R).

ign0 port 0x3f4-0x3f7,0x1f0-0x1f7 at device 1.0 on pci0

Could someone please tell me what this is?

Thanks in advance,

Re: SCSI retries without errors in /var/log/messages?

2000-09-14 Thread Jean-Francois Dockes

Kenneth D. Merry writes:
 > SCSI errors that we recover from aren't logged.

I think that most SCSI retries should be logged.

Except in some specific cases of retries after a unit attention
condition, retries are usually indicative of hardware trouble.

Don't most devices already use a number of internal retries which is
appropriate when they are healthy ? When external retries become
necessary and frequent, the situation is bad, and subsequent failures
are quite probable.

Better to be warned earlier.

(There are also the retries caused by scsi protocol problems - bad
bus - but these are usually followed by a bus reset which is logged ?)

And, by the way, 'recovered errors' sense keys (problems solved
internally by the device) should also be logged for the same reason,
only more benign, (but I'm not too sure that many devices actually
generate these).

Profiling timer expired.

2000-09-14 Thread Noor Dawod

Hi there,

The subject says it all, and I've checked the archives and found some posts
about this; but not a solution.

Our FreeBSD 4.1-R does a dump of the MySQL tables each night, each database
into its own text file, and then uses gzip to compress these text files. For
two of these files, at least, gzip dies with a 'Profiling timer expired'
error. The text files are rather huge, few hundread megs.

Could anyone tell me why is this happening, and what is this weird error
message?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Noor

Re: incomplete ARP entry for NIC alias address

Could you actually tell us what does not work? Things seem to be fine
for me. First, I'll clear the ARP table just to make things more
clear,

  # arp -ad
  64.6.211.1 (64.6.211.1) deleted
  64.6.211.149 (64.6.211.149) deleted
  192.168.64.254 (192.168.64.254) deleted
  192.168.64.255 (192.168.64.255) deleted
  # arp -an
  ? (64.6.211.1) at 0:0:c:7:ac:1 [ethernet]

Next, I'll add an alias,

  # ifconfig de0
  de0: flags=8843 mtu 1500
  inet 192.168.64.254 netmask 0xff00 broadcast 192.168.64.255
  ether 00:e0:29:11:d3:a9
  media: autoselect (10base2/BNC) status: active
  supported media: autoselect 10base5/AUI 10base2/BNC 10baseT/UTP
 10baseT/UTP
  # ifconfig de0 alias 192.168.64.128 netmask 255.255.255.255
  # ifconfig de0
  de0: flags=8843 mtu 1500
  inet 192.168.64.254 netmask 0xff00 broadcast 192.168.64.255
  inet 192.168.64.128 netmask 0x broadcast 192.168.64.128
  ether 00:e0:29:11:d3:a9
  media: autoselect (10base2/BNC) status: active
  supported media: autoselect 10base5/AUI 10base2/BNC 10baseT/UTP
 10baseT/UTP

Now, I can reach that address just fine,

  # ping 192.168.64.128
  PING 192.168.64.128 (192.168.64.128): 56 data bytes
  64 bytes from 192.168.64.128: icmp_seq=0 ttl=255 time=0.114 ms
  64 bytes from 192.168.64.128: icmp_seq=1 ttl=255 time=0.136 ms
  64 bytes from 192.168.64.128: icmp_seq=2 ttl=255 time=0.137 ms
  64 bytes from 192.168.64.128: icmp_seq=3 ttl=255 time=0.133 ms
  ^C
  --- 192.168.64.128 ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 packets received, 0% packet loss
  round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.114/0.130/0.137/0.009 ms

And let's look at the ARP table now,

  # arp -an
  ? (64.6.211.1) at 0:0:c:7:ac:1 [ethernet]
  ? (192.168.64.128) at 0:e0:29:11:d3:a9 permanent [ethernet]
  ? (192.168.64.255) at ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff permanent [ethernet]

The permanent entry for the alias showed up just fine. So again, what
is not working for you?
