Disable PNP via BIOS? The box is remote; I will check that later
when I get someone to verify the BIOS setting. But FWIW, PNPBIOS is
not specified in the kernel configuration.

I haven't pressed control-A on this box in years... So nothing
recently has been done.

thank you.

crash on 4.7-RELEASE-p2

2002-12-17 Thread Mark Nipper
I've been experiencing crashes across several updates now
since around 4.6-RELEASE. As this is my first attempt to really
debug a problem like this, I'm hoping for a little help from the
community in how to go about such a thing. I'm not running a
kernel with debugging turned on yet, because I don't want to
stomp on anything which I might could use at this point to
analyze the crash dump I have. So that might be something I need
to do before anything else really. This is what I have so far:

Look again - it says they are "filtered".

nmap can usually tell the difference between a TCP port that is
closed on the target (returns a RST) and one that is filtered by a
firewall (returns nothing.) In fact many of the ports shown as filtered
might not even really be open on your box.

No, it's simply not sophisticated enough for what you want it to do.

Note, for instance, that snmp is (normally) a UDP service, so it's
unlikely you actually have an open TCP port 161; but nmap can see
you're filtering it nonetheless.

ipf does have the ability to more correctly simulate a closed port.
I did a similar exercise on my personal OpenBSD firewall box earlier
this year; I won't go through your whole ruleset, but basically for
every TCP port you block, you need to add a return-rst, and for every
UDP port you block, you need to add return-icmp(port-unr). This
provides a pretty good simulation of a host running no services, if
that's what you want to look like.

root kit

2002-12-17 Thread Wayne M Barnes
Dear FreeBSD,

If I find a functional "root kit" on my computer,
can I forward it to a FreeBSD developer, and
they will prevent its function? If so, where to?

I had one appear on one of my systems awhile back that an ordinary
user could use to become root. I think I saved it all as a .tgz archive.
I haven't tried it lately.

Does ipfw or ipf have the ability to return a SYN/ACK packet for each
incoming SYN, and return an appropriate ACK any incoming ACK packets?
