rpc.lockd exiting just after startup @r240811

2012-09-23 Thread David Wolfskill
This (rpc.lockd exiting rather quickly) is happening on my home "build
machine"; in hindsight, the first symptom I saw was from the
cron-initiated attempt to perform "svn update" on the NFS-resident
/usr/ports:

svn: E155036: Please see the 'svn upgrade' command
svn: E155036: Working copy '/usr/ports' is an old development version (format
12); to upgrade it, use a format 18 client, then use
'tools/dev/wc-ng/bump-to-19.py', then use the current client

which, I admit, confused me a great deal for a while.

The machine in question is intended to do this every night -- and
the preceding night, there was no problem, so while I didn't actually
check explicitly to verify that rpc.lockd was running, /usr/ports
did get updated.

I tried "sh -x /etc/rc.d/lockd restart", which wasn't exceptionally
revealing, except to verify that I was trying to start rpc.lockd with no
arguments.

So I did "ktrace -di /usr/sbin/rpc.lockd"; here's a cut/paste of the
last page or so of the resulting kdump output:

...
  2336 rpc.lockd CALL  connect(0x3,0xbfbfce30,0x6a)
  2336 rpc.lockd STRU  struct sockaddr { AF_LOCAL, /var/run/logpriv }

  2336 rpc.lockd RET   sigprocmask 0

  2336 rpc.lockd RET   sigprocmask 0
  2336 rpc.lockd CALL  exit(0x1)

I've attached a gzipped copy of the complete file in case that's
of interest or use.

When lockd was last working, the machine was running:

FreeBSD freebeast.catwhisker.org 9.1-PRERELEASE FreeBSD 9.1-PRERELEASE #474
240772M: Fri Sep 21 05:03:35 PDT 2012
r...@freebeast.catwhisker.org:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC  i386

Last night, it was running:

FreeBSD freebeast.catwhisker.org 9.1-PRERELEASE FreeBSD 9.1-PRERELEASE #475
240811M: Sat Sep 22 05:02:51 PDT 2012
r...@freebeast.catwhisker.org:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC  i386

and after updating this morning, it is now running:

FreeBSD freebeast.catwhisker.org 9.1-PRERELEASE FreeBSD 9.1-PRERELEASE #476
240856M: Sun Sep 23 05:10:13 PDT 2012
r...@freebeast.catwhisker.org:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC  i386

and that's the environment in which the above ktrace/kdump was produced.

I guess I hold off on my port-rebuilding for the "production"
machines that I recently switched from stable/8 to stable/9 until
next weekend (as they use the /usr/ports that I can't update)

I've also attached a copy of the dmesg.boot, in case that helps.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Peace,
david

Try to revert the r240799. If this does not help, then some digging with
gdb would be needed to see why kernel dislikes the buffer. Well, the same
digging would be needed even if the revert helps.

Thanks -- I had just noticed that commit in the archives after noticing
that the machine in question, while running:

FreeBSD freebeast.catwhisker.org 10.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 10.0-CURRENT #937
240811M: Sat Sep 22 06:36:06 PDT 2012
r...@freebeast.catwhisker.org:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC  i386

had no trouble with rpc.lockd -- indeed, I was able to perform the
desired "svn update /usr/ports/" while running head.

So I think that first, I'll try a complete (clean) rebuild of stable/9;
if that still exhibits the symptom (of rpc.lockd exiting rather
prematurely), I will try reverting r240799.

In any case, I expect to report back (but I have some chores to do
first).

Peace,
david

It would certainly be possible to add a new error message, but from the
embedded point of view the extra code size may not be worth it (also
considering that error messages can be enhanced in many other places as
well).

Fatal trap 12: hda

2012-09-23 Thread Barbara
After updating src on RELENG_9 from r240236 to r240821 I have rebuilt
my world+kernel.
On reboot I had a kernel panic, "supervisor read, page not present"
for process swapper.
Trying to reboot in Single User Mode I accidentally disabled ACPI.
Luckily the machine booted succesfully but there was nothing new in
/var/crash.
Then I tried again with ACPI enabled: same kernel panic.
So I run nm on the instruction pointer of the panic and I noticed that
it was in hdaa_sense_init, in sys/dev/sound/pci/hda/hdaa.c.
BTW, I have "device sound" and "device snd_hda" in my KERNCONF, and
the sound hw detection happens before HDs, is that the reason why I
wasn't able to get a dump or dumping using DDB and the panicking
process is swapper? Is there any trick I'm missing for that?

Booting in verbose mode and comparing the output with ACPI enabled
(where the panic happens) and disabled, I guessed that the problem was
where "No presence detection support at nid..." is printed, as it was
missing in the former case for nid 27 - Headphone (Green Jack). With
ACPI disabled the value was looking quite weird: 36765696.
So I made the following change:

--- sys/dev/sound/pci/hda/hdaa.c.orig   2012-09-22 20:06:20.0 +0200
+++ sys/dev/sound/pci/hda/hdaa.c2012-09-23 20:39:32.0 +0200
@@ -627,7 +627,7 @@
(HDA_CONFIG_DEFAULTCONF_MISC(w->wclass.pin.config)
& 1) != 0) {
device_printf(devinfo->dev,
"No presence detection support at nid %d\n",
-   as[i].pins[15]);
+   as->pins[15]);
} else {
if (w->unsol < 0)
poll = 1;

Maybe the fix is not correct, but at least the new kernel boots successfully.
Can someone review that?
I tried looking in svn commits between the two builds, but I don't
know what exposed the problem.
If anyone is interested in my verbose log, or doing some tests, please ask.

Your patch looks correct, looks like a bug could have been introduced via
copy+paste.

Thanks for the suggestiion.

As noted earlier, I first tried a rebuild (not specifying -DNOCLEAN);
that proved ineffective.

I then reverted r240799, and rpc.lockd runs; I am now able to issue
svn commands against an NFS-resident working copy. The procedure
I used (in case I screwed up -- or there's a less inelegant way to
do it) was:

cd /usr/src && \
svn diff -c 240799 >/tmp/d && \
svn patch --reverse-diff /tmp/d

I then performed:

make -DNOCLEAN -j 4 buildworld && make -DNOCLEAN -j 4 kernel

The machine is now running:

FreeBSD freebeast.catwhisker.org 9.1-PRERELEASE FreeBSD 9.1-PRERELEASE #478
240856M: Sun Sep 23 15:02:33 PDT 2012
r...@freebeast.catwhisker.org:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC  i386

I have subsequently seen similar symptoms on my work desktop, which
is running stable/9 as of r240849.

Since rpc.lockd seems OK on the systems running head, perhaps there
was an issue with the MFC?

I'll be happy to test further -- I just need a bit of guidance from
time to time. :-}

Peace,
david

Both should have the same issue. It does depend on what kind of load
your -current box is running, of course.

What I can do is send you individual patches to see if we
can narrow down the culprit. If I can avoid reverting all the
change it will be better.

It will be a bit boring because you may have to build kernel
and libc each time, so I would start with the most obvious
candidates. For now just leave r240799 reverted.

Pedro.

One of the reasons I call my laptop's kernel config file "CANARY"
is because I use it to check for danger. :-}

Sure -- but in this case, it's just a matter of whether or not the
machine acts as an NFS client.

Of course; I saw that r240799 was a collection of individual changes.

OK.

Would it be OK for me to do the (usual, for me):

make -DNOCLEAN -j 4 buildworld && make -DNOCLEAN -j 4 kernel

?

(I do all the work within script(1), so we have a record.)

If you have a patch, please send it & I'll give it a try.

Alternatively, if there's a useful way to build a debugging version of
rpc.lockd & run it under a debugger, maybe I could see what's going on?

Oh -- one other thing (before I forget again): I'm using clang:

freebeast(9.1-P)[1] cat /etc/src.conf
CC=clang
CXX=clang++
CPP=clang-cpp
WITH_LIBCPLUSPLUS=yes
freebeast(9.1-P)[2]

Peace,
david

Re: Xorg nvidia-driver GT 650M cause system reboot on my MacBook Retina 9.1RC1

2012-09-23 Thread suken woo
BTW, I have same issue with ports-bugs 145016 link below even use lasted
nvidia-driver port's version 304.43
http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-ports-bugs/2010-March/184968.html
and I'm pretty sure the GT 650M card works perfect under Mac OSX ML

TIA
