Hello Everyone,

The branches supported by the FreeBSD Security Officer have been updated to
reflect the EoL (end-of-life) of FreeBSD 7.1. The new list of supported
branches is below and at http://security.freebsd.org/ .

Users of FreeBSD 7.1 are advised to upgrade promptly to a newer release (most
likely the recently announced FreeBSD 7.4) either by downloading an updated
source tree and building updates manually, or (for i386 and amd64 systems)
using the FreeBSD Update utility as described in the relevant release
announcement.

The current supported branches and expected EoL dates are:

FreeBSD supported branches update

2010-11-30 Thread FreeBSD Security Officer
Hello Everyone,

The branches supported by the FreeBSD Security Officer have been updated to
reflect the EoL (end-of-life) of FreeBSD 6.4 and FreeBSD 8.0. Since FreeBSD
6.4 was the last remaining supported release from the FreeBSD 6.x stable
branch, support for the FreeBSD 6.x stable branch has also ended. The new
list of supported branches is below and at http://security.freebsd.org/ .

Users of FreeBSD 6.4 and 8.0 are advised to upgrade promptly to a newer release,
either by downloading an updated source tree and building updates manually, or
(for i386 and amd64 systems) using the FreeBSD Update utility as described in
the relevant release announcement.

The FreeBSD Ports Management Team wishes to remind users that November 30
is also the end of support for the Ports Collection for both FreeBSD 6.4
RELEASE and the FreeBSD 6.x STABLE branch. Neither the infrastructure nor
individual ports are guaranteed to work on these FreeBSD versions after
that date. A CVS tag will be created for users who cannot upgrade for some
reason, at which time these users are advised to stop tracking the latest
ports CVS repository and use the RELEASE_6_EOL tag instead.

The current supported branches and expected EoL dates are:

Hello Everyone,

The branches supported by the FreeBSD Security Officer have been updated
to reflect the EoL (end-of-life) of FreeBSD 7.2. The new list is below
and at URL: http://security.freebsd.org/ .

Users of FreeBSD 7.2 are advised to upgrade promptly to a newer release,
either by downloading an updated source tree and building updates manually,
or (for i386 and amd64 systems) using the FreeBSD Update utility as
described in the relevant release announcement.

[Excerpt from http://security.freebsd.org/ follows]

Supported FreeBSD Releases

The FreeBSD Security Officer provides security advisories for
several branches of FreeBSD development. These are the -STABLE
Branches and the Security Branches. (Advisories are not issued for
   the -CURRENT Branch.)

 * The -STABLE branch tags have names like RELENG_7. The

 * Each FreeBSD Release has an associated Security Branch. The
Security Branch tags have names like RELENG_7_0. The
corresponding builds have names like FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE-p1.

Isses affecting the FreeBSD Ports Collection are covered in the
   FreeBSD VuXML document.

Each branch is supported by the Security Officer for a limited
time only, and is designated as one of `Early adopter', `Normal',
or `Extended'. The designation is used as a guideline for
determining the lifetime of the branch as follows.

   Early adopter
Releases which are published from the -CURRENT branch will be
supported by the Security Officer for a minimum of 6 months
   after the release.

   Normal
Releases which are published from a -STABLE branch will be
supported by the Security Officer for a minimum of 12 months
after the release, and for sufficient additional time (if
needed) to ensure that there is a newer release for at least
3 months before the older Normal release expires.

   Extended
Selected releases (normally every second release plus the last
release from each -STABLE branch) will be supported by the
Security Officer for a minimum of 24 months after the release,
and for sufficient additional time (if needed) to ensure that
there is a newer Extended release for at least 3 months before
   the older Extended release expires.

The current designation and estimated lifetimes of the currently
supported branches are given below. The Estimated EoL (end-of-life)
column gives the earliest date on which that branch is likely to be
dropped. Please note that these dates may be extended into the
future, but only extenuating circumstances would lead to a branch's
support being dropped earlier than the date listed.

HEADS UP: FreeBSD 7.2 EoL coming soon

Hello Everyone,

On June 30th, FreeBSD 7.2 will reach its End of Life and will no longer be
supported by the FreeBSD Security Team. Users of this release are strongly
encouraged to upgrade to FreeBSD 7.3 before that date; FreeBSD 7.3 will be
supported until the end of March 2012. Please note that since FreeBSD 7.1
has been designated for 'Extended' support, it will continue to be supported
until the end of January 2011, i.e., FreeBSD 7.1 will be supported longer
than FreeBSD 7.2.

The End of Life date for FreeBSD 7.2 was originally announced as May 31, but
was delayed by one month in accordance with Security Team policy in order to
allow a 3 month window between the release of FreeBSD 7.3 and the End of Life
of FreeBSD 7.2 to allow time for systems to be upgraded.

The freebsd-update(8) utility can be used to upgrade i386 and amd64 systems
from 7.2-RELEASE (or 7.2-RELEASE-pX for some X) to 7.3-RELEASE using binary
updates (i.e., without compiling from source) as described in the 7.3-RELEASE

FreeBSD 7.2-RELEASE EoL delayed to end of June 2010

2010-03-10 Thread FreeBSD Security Officer
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello Everyone,

In keeping with the FreeBSD Security Team policy concerning the EoL dates for
Normal support releases,
a minimum of 12 months after the release, and for sufficient additional
time (if needed) to ensure that there is a newer release for at least 3
months before the older Normal release expires
the EoL date for FreeBSD 7.2-RELEASE has been adjusted from the end of May 2010
to the end of June 2010.

Due to an unfortunate limitation in the freebsd-update(8) utility, it will warn
about the upcoming EoL based on the original end-of-May date until the next time
a security update is pushed out for 7.2-RELEASE.

Please note that this is only a one month reprieve; we expect 7.3-RELEASE to be
announced later this month, and users of 7.2-RELEASE are advised to utilize the
months of April, May, and June to ensure that their systems are upgraded before
7.2-RELEASE ceases to be supported.

Once they are released, 7.3-RELEASE and 8.1-RELEASE will both receive Extended
(i.e., 24 month) support from the FreeBSD Security Team.

Hi all,

On January 31st, FreeBSD 6.3 will reach its End of Life and will no longer be
supported by the FreeBSD Security Team. Users of this release are strongly
encouraged to upgrade to a newer release before that date -- more conservative
users will probably wish to upgrade to FreeBSD 6.4 or FreeBSD 7.1 (which are
both extended-support branches), while others will probably wish to upgrade to
FreeBSD 7.2 or FreeBSD 8.0.

The freebsd-update(8) utility can be used to upgrade i386 and amd64 systems
from 6.3-RELEASE (or 6.3-RELEASE-pX for some X) to 6.4-RELEASE using binary
updates (i.e., without compiling from source) as described in the 6.4-RELEASE

FreeBSD supported branches update

2009-05-01 Thread FreeBSD Security Officer

Hello Everyone,

The branches supported by the FreeBSD Security Officer have been updated
to reflect the EoL (end-of-life) of FreeBSD 7.0. The new list is below
and at URL: http://security.freebsd.org/ . Please note that FreeBSD
7.0 was originally announced with an EoL date of February 28, 2009, but
the EoL was delayed by two months in order to allow a 3 month window for
systems to be upgraded to FreeBSD 7.1.

Users of FreeBSD 7.0 are advised to upgrade promptly to FreeBSD 7.1,
either by downloading an updated source tree and building updates manually,
or (for i386 and amd64 systems) using the FreeBSD Update utility as
described in the FreeBSD 7.1 release announcement. Some users may wish to
wait for the upcoming FreeBSD 7.2-RELEASE; however, they should be aware
that FreeBSD 7.2-RELEASE will only receive normal support (i.e., support
for 12 months) and consequently it will not be supported for as long as
FreeBSD 7.1.

[Excerpt from http://security.freebsd.org/ follows]

FreeBSD Security Advisories

The FreeBSD Security Officer provides security advisories for
several branches of FreeBSD development. These are the -STABLE
Branches and the Security Branches. (Advisories are not issued for
   the -CURRENT Branch.)

 * The -STABLE branch tags have names like RELENG_7. The
corresponding builds have names like FreeBSD 7.0-STABLE.

HEADS UP: FreeBSD 5.5, 6.1, and 6.2 EoLs coming soon

Hello Everyone,

On May 31st, FreeBSD 5.5, FreeBSD 6.1, and FreeBSD 6.2 will have reached
their End of Life and will no longer be supported by the FreeBSD Security
Team. Since FreeBSD 5.5 is the last remaining supported release from the
FreeBSD 5.x stable branch, support for the FreeBSD 5.x stable branch will
also cease at the same point. Users of any of these FreeBSD releases are
strongly encouraged to upgrade to either FreeBSD 6.3 or FreeBSD 7.0 before
that date.

Please note that the End of Life dates for FreeBSD 5.5 and FreeBSD 6.1
were announced in May 2006; and the End of Life for FreeBSD 6.2, which
was originally announced as January 31, 2008, has been extended by four
months in order to allow time for users to upgrade.

The FreeBSD Ports Management Team wishes to inform users that May 31st (the
security team's End-Of-Support date for FreeBSD 5.x) will also be the end
of support for the Ports Collection on both 5.5-RELEASE and the 5-STABLE
branch. Neither the infrastructure nor individual ports are guaranteed to
work on these FreeBSD versions after that date. A CVS tag will be created
for users who cannot upgrade for some reason; as of that commit, these users
are advised to stop tracking the latest ports CVS repository and instead
stay with the version as of that tag.

FreeBSD 6.2 EoL =~ s/January/May/

2007-10-18 Thread FreeBSD Security Officer
Hello Everyone,

In light of the longer-than-expected window between 6.2-RELEASE and 6.2-RELEASE,
the End-of-Life date for FreeBSD 6.2 has been adjusted from January 31st, 2008
to May 31st, 2008. As a result, FreeBSD 5.5, FreeBSD 6.1, and FreeBSD 6.2 will
all cease to be supported at the end of May 2008.

FreeBSD users should plan on upgrading to either FreeBSD 6.3 or FreeBSD 7.0 once
those have been released (hopefully by the end of December). FreeBSD 6.3 will
be supported until the end of 2009, while FreeBSD 7.0 will be supported until
the end of 2008.

Security Officer-supported branches update

Hello Everyone,

The branches supported by the FreeBSD Security Officer have been

FreeBSD 6.0 have `expired' and are no longer supported effective

no longer supported should take place on the [EMAIL PROTECTED]
mailing list.

This marks the end of support by the FreeBSD Security Team for the
FreeBSD 4-STABLE branch, two years after FreeBSD 4.11-RELEASE and
almost seven years after FreeBSD 4.0-RELEASE. For an explanation of
the rationale behind the EoL of FreeBSD 4.11 (and the 4-STABLE branch),
please see my earlier mailing list post on this subject:
http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-security/2006-October/004111.html

At this point, support for running software from the ports tree on
FreeBSD 4.x is ceasing: Packages for binary installations will no
longer be built for FreeBSD 4.11, building ports from source on FreeBSD
4.x will no longer be supported, and the ports INDEX will no longer be

Hello Everyone,

On January 31st, FreeBSD 4.11 and FreeBSD 6.0 will have reached their End
of Life dates and will no longer be supported by the FreeBSD Security Team.
Users of either of these FreeBSD releases are strongly encouraged to upgrade
to FreeBSD 5.5, FreeBSD 6.1, or the upcoming FreeBSD 6.2 before that date.

Discussion concerning FreeBSD releases which are no longer supported should
take place on the [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list. For an explanation
of the rationale behind the EoL of FreeBSD 4.11, please see my earlier
mailing list post on this subject:
http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-security/2006-October/004111.html

The current supported branches and expected EoL dates are:

Security Officer-supported branches update

2006-10-31 Thread FreeBSD Security Officer
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello Everyone,

The branches supported by the FreeBSD Security Officer have been
updated to reflect recent EoL (end-of-life) events. The new list is
below and at URL: http://security.freebsd.org/ . FreeBSD 5.3 and
FreeBSD 5.4 have `expired' and are no longer supported effective
November 1, 2006.

The end-of-life date for FreeBSD 6.0 has been delayed by two months
in order to allow time for users to upgrade after FreeBSD 6.2 is
released. As a result, FreeBSD 6.0 and FreeBSD 4.11 will both reach
their respective EoLs and cease to be supported at the end of January
2007.

[Excerpt from http://www.freebsd.org/security/ follows]

FreeBSD Security Advisories

The FreeBSD Security Officer provides security advisories for
several branches of FreeBSD development. These are the -STABLE
Branches and the Security Branches. (Advisories are not issued for
   the -CURRENT Branch.)

 * There is usually only a single -STABLE branch, although during
the transition from one major development line to another
(such as from FreeBSD 5.x to 6.x), there is a time span in
which there are two -STABLE branches. The -STABLE branch tags
have names like RELENG_6. The corresponding builds have names
   like FreeBSD 6.1-STABLE.

 * Each FreeBSD Release has an associated Security Branch. The
Security Branch tags have names like RELENG_6_1. The
corresponding builds have names like FreeBSD 6.1-RELEASE-p1.

   Normal
Releases which are published from a -STABLE branch will be
supported by the Security Officer for a minimum of 12 months
   after the release.

   Extended
Selected releases will be supported by the Security Officer
for a minimum of 24 months after the release.

Hello Everyone,

On October 31st, FreeBSD 5.3 and FreeBSD 5.4 will have reached their

Team. Users of either of those FreeBSD releases are strongly encouraged
to upgrade to FreeBSD 5.5 or FreeBSD 6.1 before that date.

In addition, the FreeBSD 6.0 End of Life is presently scheduled for
November 30th. Depending upon the progress of the FreeBSD 6.2 release
cycle, this may be delayed until December 31st in order to allow time
for users of FreeBSD 6.0 to upgrade to FreeBSD 6.2.

Users of FreeBSD 4.11 systems are also reminded that that FreeBSD 4.11
will reach its End of Life at the end of January 2007 and that they
should be making plans to upgrade or replace such systems.
