I see.

Is it possible to try a genuine USB keyboard to see if that makes a difference?
You'll want to also include the
procedure for USB keyboard installation / boot as well..,

For me on my IBM T43, updating to Xorg-6.9 broke X as well. After some time
spent hunting around for answers, I
found a thread that suggested that Xorg-6.9 broke DRI (certainly for the
graphics card on the T43).

Disabling DRI in xorg.conf then enabled me to use startx successfully
thereafter., Might be worth a shot for you
too.

The problem was indeed dodgy RAM! I swapped the RAM out for other modules, and
buildworld (and the complete upgrade to Stable, as a matter of fact) completed
successfully.

Strange though.., the machine I've been working on was originally running
Fedora Core-3 quite happily - even recompiled a new kernel before trashing it
for FreeBSD.., Go figure..,

Thanks again to everyone - onwards!

Stacey

That's fair enough..,

Here's what's in there:

# -- use.perl generated deltas -- #
# Created: Sat Dec  4 19:36:28 2004
# Setting to use base perl from ports:
PERL_VER=5.8.5
PERL_VERSION=5.8.5
PERL_ARCH=mach
NOPERL=yo
NO_PERL=yo
NO_PERL_WRAPPER=yo
CPUTYPE?=i686
CFLAGS= -O -pipe
NOPROFILE= true# Avoid compiling profiled libraries

That's about it.., Like I said, its a newly installed machine that in the
process of being set up - at this stage, its a matter of getting it to 5-Stable.

In keeping with others' suggestions that this might well be symptomatic of RAM
issues, I've swapped out all of the RAM and have restarted as per:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/makeworld.html
19.4.16.6. What do I do if something goes wrong?

So. I've just kicked off (scripted logging as well) another buildworld, and
will post again when this one completes. Unless of course, you determine that
this indeed something wrong with the contents of my /etc/make.conf..,

Thanks again.

Regards,

Stacey

I've got only SCSI disks on my system:
2 x QUANTUM   Model: ATLAS10K3_18_WLS  Rev: 020W

Running off of a Tekram DC-390U3W card:
sym0:1: FAST-80 WIDE SCSI 160.0 MB/s DT (12.5 ns, offset 62)

Its an SMP set up:
2 x Intel Pentium III 866:
Intel machine check architecture supported.
Intel machine check reporting enabled on CPU#1.
CPU1: Intel Pentium III (Coppermine) stepping 0a
Total of 2 processors activated (3432.44 BogoMIPS).
ENABLING IO-APIC IRQs
..TIMER: vector=0x31 pin1=2 pin2=-1
checking TSC synchronization across 2 CPUs: passed.
Brought up 2 CPUs
zapping low mappings.

Keeping in mind that the above output is from Fedora-Core3 built on the same
machine early this morning..,

Did you install from FreeBSD-5.3 REL cd's?

Regards,

Stacey

I've got the same problem here on a Tyan Tiger 230
(http://www.tyan.com/products/html/tiger230.html). As well as with your
experiences, I can't seem to boot two sets of FreeBSD-5.3 REL CD-ROM sets from
different suppliers. Here's what I get with any of the 5.3 REL installation
cd's:

Just at the point where you'd expect the /sbin/loader bit to start that goes
into the FreeBSD boot process, I get lots of (what appears to be hex numbers)
gibberish scrolling up the screen. Like you I thought that I might have a
faulty cdrom drive, but swapping in a (sealed) drive produced the same results.

However, the FreeBSD-4.10 REL cd's do appear to "start" working through the
installation, but then I get lots of errors / warnings as follows:

acdo: MODE_SENSE_BIG command timeout - resetting
ata1: resetting devices... done

These scroll up the screen for ages and do not appear to be going anywhere - at
which point I power down the system.

I've not got 5.1, but I did try the 5.2.1 CD-ROM Set (from BSDMall) as well
with the same failure. What I was able to do is successfully install MS Windows
2K Pro, 2K Server & Fedora Core-3 on the same hardware over the last few hours
- in fact, its now running Fedora Core-3 (apparently) happily. I've attached
the dmesg from the Fedora install for anyone that might be intested in what the
problem might be.

Regards,

Stacey
