No, it is still lurking in some corners of the kernel, but almost all
workloads no longer require it.

Partially. It is pretty stable right now for the most part since we're in 
a code freeze, but you might want to wait for the first beta before you 
jump in. Also, GIANT is still there in some places, but a LOT fewer now 
than before.
