Be aware that fdisk will fake up a partition table if the volume has no table. Try setting sysctl kern.geom.debugflags=16 before running fdisk. This stops GEOM protecting the drive/partition and allows fdisk to open it. I think fdisk and bsdlabel have been taught about GEOM in 6-current, but I very might well be wrong.
