upgrade from 3.5 stable to 4.0 stable

2001-07-04 Thread Alex Lee

I finally decided to upgrade the server from 3.5 stable to 4.0. I tried to
following the procedure in UPDATING. But when I do make buildworld
-DNOPERL, I got the following messages:

Any help is great appreciated.

 Any help is great appreciated.

You need to install gcc295 port, and execute make like this
CC=gcc295 CXX=gcc295 CPP=g++295 make buildworld -DNOPERL
and may be you need to modify PATH in Makefile,
to include /usr/local/{bin,sbin}

At least this works for me, when I do 3.4-R - 4.3-S...
YMMV.

This sounds easier than multiple buildworlds. Wanna do a quick
writeup. This is the first I've heard of it.

I thought my way is obvious ;) and everyone do it that way...

I'd just check out fresh -STABLE /usr/src and /usr/ports, install gcc295 from
fresh (!) ports, and then try to buildworld, but forgot to read
/usr/src/UPGRADING about -DNOPERL, then community kindly helps me with that,
and buildworld completed sucessfully. Than I rewrite kernel config, because of
syntax changes. And I skip some steps from /usr/src/UPDATING about texinfo:

in single user[6]
cd /usr/src
cd gnu/usr.bin/texinfo/install-info
make install
cd ../../../..
ldconfig -R /usr/obj/usr/src/lib/libc
I simply forgot ;) but installworld was done sucessfully...

However, I didn't run mergemaster yet, and not all installed packages up
to date...

But it works:

solikus@ACC$ uptime
 8:57up 2 days, 14:55, 3 users, load averages: 0.03, 0.03, 0.00
solikus@ACC$ uname -a

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/ACC0  i386
