[Freeciv-Dev] [bug #21272] "freeciv-gtk2.exe caused an Access Violation" while looking inside city

2013-11-30 Thread anonymous
Follow-up Comment #11, bug #21272 (project freeciv):

...especially as the call trace is inside gtk_window_present(),

maybe, maybe not. I hadn't realised the error messages I was getting were not
the same. I have 4 of them with Access Violation at location 01b76408. I now
see they are 3 different errors. Here is another one without the
gtk_window_present()

[Freeciv-Dev] [bug #21317] Empty server shows up on metaserver as Humans="Unknown"

Tiny thing that's been bothering me for ages...

I've noticed that on http://meta.freeciv.org/ sometimes server show up as
having "Human Players" = "Unknown", despite being a new enough version (post
patch #2312) that they should know about humans. This has made me not quite
trust that column at all.

Now I come to investigate, it happens when a server has no players at all
(even AI), because in this case the server sends the special "dropplrs" signal
to the metaserver and doesn't include the "humans" / "available" counts. So
the metaserver can't know that this server counts humans.

Proposed backward-compatible solution:
* In the server, always send "humans" (and maybe "available") even if there
are no players and we're sending "dropplrs". (I think old metaservers will
ignore this.)
* In the metaserver, if the incoming request from a server includes "humans"
(and maybe "available"?), honour it (or at least set "humans" to 0 rather than
-1). (Old servers will give the current behaviour.)

[Freeciv-Dev] [bug #21272] "freeciv-gtk2.exe caused an Access Violation" while looking inside city

2013-11-30 Thread Jacob Nevins
Follow-up Comment #10, bug #21272 (project freeciv):

> I wonder if it's a Gtk rather than Freeciv bug.
...especially as the call trace is inside gtk_window_present(), and reportedly
occurs for two completely different kinds of popup windows (city dialog and
unit selection).
Perhaps it's something that has a chance of happening for any popup window,
and it's just that these are the most common popups?

2013-11-30 Thread Jacob Nevins
Follow-up Comment #9, bug #21272 (project freeciv):

Given how deep in Gtk the crash is, I wonder if it's a Gtk rather than Freeciv
bug.
2.3.4 looks like it was supplied with Gtk 2.16.6. I would expect cproc to
build a Freeciv 2.3.5 release with at least Gtk 2.24.10, since that's what the
Freeciv-2.4.0 Windows package uses. So, maybe this will fix itself.

[Freeciv-Dev] [bug #21272] "freeciv-gtk2.exe caused an Access Violation" while looking inside city

2013-11-30 Thread Jacob Nevins
Follow-up Comment #8, bug #21272 (project freeciv):

I have used the reporter's delegation in LT32, but I haven't found anything
interesting.
I was not able to use a client running under valgrind as that made it too slow
and the server cut the connection (took about 4.5 minutes to get the full
ruleset and map down from the server).
I did connect with 2.3.4 not under valgrind, and clicked around pretty much
all of the player's teammates' cities to try to provoke trouble, as well as
some of the player's own cities, without running into difficulty.

Unfortunately, the LT32 server has died, precluding further investigation.

Instead, I've had a go at making sense of the reporter's original backtrace in
comment #0 by installing Ubuntu 'mingw-w64'.
Using the supplied i686-w64-mingw32-addr2line against freeciv-gtk2.exe doesn't
give any better decode than that attached here.
A crude guesswork backtrace based on "nm -n" follows:

[...gtk stuff as below...]

Which probably isn't that surprising given that this was "when looking inside
one of my own cities".
(I'd be interested to see a backtrace from when you look in a teammate's
city.)

setup_auth_server.sh for the MySQL backend no longer works out of the box.
(See referenced mailing list post for details.)

Apparently the current equivalent syntax is 'ENGINE=MyISAM', but could we just
remove this detail? Will that work on older MySQL?

Details:

Source tarball (.tar.bz2) is now available at download.gna.org (others are
still uploading).

Despite progress under task #7681, I don't think we should distribute the Gtk3
client in the usual place yet -- the outstanding problems are too serious.
Up to you whether you upload another test build to packages/windows/testing/
(I don't think much has changed in Freeciv since the last one, and there's no
new Gtk3 win32 bundle to build against).

[Freeciv-Dev] [bug #20999] Info label just black box in crosser-based build

2013-11-30 Thread Jacob Nevins
Update of bug #20999 (project freeciv):

Severity:   4 - Important => 5 - Blocker
 Planned Release: => 2.5.0,2.6.0

___

Follow-up Comment #3:

Marking as blocker for 2.5.0 since this blocks Gtk3 client as default. (Of
course if there's any easy fix within Freeciv we should consider backporting
it to S2_4 too.)

[Freeciv-Dev] [bug #21314] Gtk3 client is very sluggish on Windows

2013-11-30 Thread Jacob Nevins

Summary: Gtk3 client is very sluggish on Windows

Severity: 5 - Blocker

 Open/Closed: Open
 Release: 2.4.0+
 Discussion Lock: Any
Operating System: Microsoft Windows
 Planned Release: 2.5.0,2.6.0

___

Details:

As noted in task #7681, on my Windows 7 32-bit installation at least, the
first experimental Gtk3 installer that cproc built

is incredibly sluggish for some reason, and eats lots of CPU (much more than
the Gtk2 client, or Gtk3 on the same machine under Linux).

Don't know how we can progress this; creating ticket to gather more data /
ideas.
Marking as blocker for 2.5.0 since IMO this blocks Gtk3 as default client. (Of
course if we find an easy fix in Freeciv we'll probably backport it to 2.4.0
as well.)

(Is it possible that the Windows Gtk3 Cairo implementation is not well
optimised, or something?)

[Freeciv-Dev] Some serious suggestions for Freeciv

2013-11-30 Thread neilanna2
First of all:

I can't find the section on the wiki page for a forum that
specifically looks at suggestions. Hence this email.

Secondly:

Many of these suggestions have come about after playing solo freeciv
for over 10 years. They are also less to do with game rules and more
to do with improvements to the gui and commands.

Finally:

Here are SOME suggestions (I have more but I'll only mail the less
radical ones).

1. "Return to home city" command.

This is similar to the "return to nearest city" command, but instead
the unit heads for its HOME city rather than the nearest one.

2. City Genocide option.

Flagged as part of the military game settings, this option would
result in the total destruction of a city once it has been captured. I
find that sometimes as a solo player I really don't want to capture
enemy cities, so I go into the editing menu to destroy the newly
captured city. Having this option flagged would certainly change how
the game is played, for both players and AI. It's also based on the
notion that other countries could be incompatible species.

3. Gold reserve.

This would prevent the player from actively lowering gold past a
certain arbitrary point (eg 20 gold). It wouldn't affect a passive
lowering (ie from having negative gold per turn) but would prevent the
player from buying improvements or units or upgrading units past a
certain point in the gold reserve. The reason: I often find that when
I have a low amount of gold (eg 5 gold) that I oftentimes lose an
improvement at the end of a turn... even when gold income is positive.
A reserve amount would prevent this from happening.

4. "Give all inventions" flag in game editor

When editing the game I sometimes wish to add all inventions to a
country or countries. I have to manually click on all 87. Having the
ability to flag all inventions at once would speed up this process.

5. City Governor presets should be moved up or down.

When in the city governor screen, all presets, including default and
player created, should be able to be moved up or down according to the
player's needs. If I've created some governor presets I sometimes wish
to move them up and down in order to make it easier for me to choose.

6. Country creator

As part of the "Pick Nation -> What Nation will you be?" screen, the
player should be able to create a country and a series of cities and a
flag and so on. This would then be added to the relevant files. Having
this would be better and easier for players to create their own
countries (eg the banned Tolkien ones) rather than fiddling around
with the actual files (and messing them up)

I have more, but these are the ones I believe will be taken more
seriously than, say, introducing an armoured balloon unit!

Regards,

Neil Cameron. Solo Freeciv addict.
