Follow-up Comment #5:

The attached patch simply removes all fallbacks for the specific sprites.

After this patch:

The path sprites are optional, and simply won't be drawn if absent. The
numbers for intermediate steps will always be drawn though (if anyone really
didn't want that for some reason, they could simply set them to blank
sprites).

The waypoint sprite is mandatory.
