just implement LeanFS or ext2 for xxDOS, and you'll see why that's no
option

If something ever were to come up to restrict FreeDOS support for FAT,
it would always be possible to implement another filesystem, such as
LeanFS or ext2.

Re: [Freedos-devel] FAT patents and freedos?

2006-01-11 Thread Jim Hall

I started looking more into the patents in question, and I'm not really
concerned with respect to FreeDOS. The 3 patents listed on
 are:

* U.S. Patent #5,579,517
 Common name space for long and short filenames

* U.S. Patent #5,758,352
 Common name space for long and short filenames

* U.S. Patent #6,286,013
 Method and system for providing a common name space for long and short
file names in an operating system

The abstracts for each look identical:

"An operating system provides a common name space for both long
filenames and short filenames. In this common namespace, a long filename
and a short filename are provided for each file. Each file has a short
filename directory entry and may have at least one long filename
directory entry associated with it. The number of long filename
directory entries that are associated with a file depends on the number
of characters in the long filename of the file. The long filename
directory entries are configured to minimize compatibility problems with
existing installed program bases."

None of these are directly related to FAT, per se. They are more
directly related to VFAT & LFN support. IANAL, but this doesn't look
very applicable to FreeDOS sans LFN.

Right, the page you linked to:

Many thanks, Blair. I had it on my todo list but couldn't cope with it.
Also thinking of the future of this bunch of info after FreeDOS 1.0.

BTW, I also agree with the XCDROM stuff, now that Jeremy (=mainainer of
ATAPICD) agrees too. I assume the license of XCDROM is "good enough", right?

Hi Blair,

Have you received my last mail about correcting some messages before
translating?

Blair Campbell escreveu:

Umm. No one contacted me about the translation, but one day it
appeared on the wiki (apparently edited by Carlos, the fd-doc guy
afair) incomplete, so I think it should be safe to finish personally.
Maybe he even simply missed the 0.x messages.

I don't like to give my email address to login in a site. I wouldn't in

Well banning IPs wouldn't help with the current crop of wiki spam as
currently all that drug cr** is added at the same time from multiple
machines (with dynamic IPs). From the looks it is a synchronized
distributed action, where they start at one wiki page and pass the links
to computers at other IP addresses and all of the edits are done at
roughly the same time.

Since I have very limited access at the moment I simply blocked usage of
the names they try to use (the wiki requires a name [any will do] but the
ones spamming the fdos wiki seem to reuse the same set).
